This chapter, the story in general talks about death, fire, and drinking.
I knew the truth. It scared me that I knew the truth. For now, I'd keep it to myself. We woke up the following morning. I felt sick to my stomach, understanding who he was. I played it cool. I acted normal, not to set him off. He started getting ready for work while I sat on the bed. I felt sick, mentally and physically.
"What's wrong?" He asked me. He walked into the room wearing different clothes. "I don't feel good. I'm thinking about taking the day off, "I explained. "Okay, do you need anything before I go?" He asked. "No, I'm good," I replied. "I love you. I hope you feel better," He said. He leaned down and kissed me.
Bradley left, and I called out of work. I planned to go to the laundry mat to get our laundry done. Most of my clothes were dirty, but Bradley barely had any dirty clothes. I got ready for the day and put the laundry in the car. I drove to the laundry mat, and there was hardly anyone there.
I walked inside the laundry mat carrying two baskets full. I left the two baskets of clothes on the floor near a washer and went outside to grab the last basket. I brought the last basket inside. I placed all the clothes into washers and started it. I wanted to wait until our clothes were done so nobody would steal them or take our clothes out of the washer.
I waited on the bench for our clothes to be done. I sat there on the bench, watching people come in the laundry mat. I sat there thinking about Bradley. Mila texted me and wanted to hang out. I texted Mila throughout my time waiting there. I sat there for about two hours, waiting for our clothes to be done.
When the clothes were done, I put them into the baskets and loaded them into the car. I drove home and put the laundry inside. I folded all of our laundries and put it away. After I finished the laundry, I sat on the bed still thinking about him. I couldn't get it off my mind. I thought about what he told me about his family. A house fire happened and killed his family.
I pulled out my phone and decide I would search for it to know more about it. I first looked up "house fire in Seattle, Washington" and found two results. I then looked up Bradley's real full name. The results brought me to tears.
I sat there, on the end of the bed, staring at the screen. I clicked on a website, and it showed a mug shot of Bradley. I website said he killed his family in a house fire and fled to Washington. I felt chills all over my body. I sat there for hours, looking up more about the case. Once I was doing my research, I deleted my history.
I didn't know what to do. I should've called the police then and there, but I didn't. My phone was going dead, and Mila texted me. She wanted to hang out at her place, and I agreed. It started to get dark outside, and he would be coming home soon.
I knew tonight was the night to leave. I packed a bag including a few sets of scrubs, regular clothes, hygiene items, a phone charger, pajamas, and undergarments. I left my apartment, bringing the bag full of my stuff. I drove to Mila and Henry's place.
Henry opened the door and welcomed me inside. I saw Mila in the kitchen. She walked up toward me with a worried expression on her face. "Are you okay?" She asked, placing her left hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, why?" I asked her. "You looked worked up. What did he do?" She asked. "Nothing," I lied. "I don't feel well," I said.
"What's wrong?" She asked. There was a long silence, and she brought me over to the couch. I sat on the couch, and they sat across from me. "I've been feeling sick," I said. "How? Tell me," she said. "I've been throwing up," Before I could get another word out, she gasped. "What?" Henry asked, putting down his phone.
I was confused. Why did she gasp? "When was your last period?" She asked. Then I realized what she meant. I didn't think about me being pregnant. We all sat there in silence, staring at each other. "I don't remember," I spat out. "Heather," she said. "I didn't think about that," I said.
"I'll be back." She said. She walked to the bathroom and started digging through the drawer, and pulled something. She left the bathroom and walked back to the living room with something in her hand. She sat down and gave me a pregnancy test.
I looked at her. She seemed worried as I held it. "Everything will be okay, Heather." She told me. I walked to the bathroom to take the test. I took the test and washed my hands as I waited. Mila walked to the bathroom and took the test of the counter. She looked at it and gasped. "What?" I asked. "You're pregnant," She spoke. Henry turned around and looked at us.
I was shocked we stood there in silence. "Heather?" She asked. I took the test out of her hand and left the bathroom. I then walked toward the door to leave. "Heather, wait!" She yelled. "Where are you going?" She asked. "To tell Bradley," I replied. I walked out the door and saw Mila standing by the door of her apartment.
I drove home thinking about would could I do. I thought about a plan and came up with one. I got home and saw Bradley's car in the apartment complex's parking lot. I felt nervous walking inside. Knowing who he was. I wanted him to know before he went to prison.
I got out of my car and walked up the steps. He greeted me at the door. I quickly grabbed my chest and sighed. It scared me because I didn't expect him there. His facial expression looked normal. He didn't feel that anything was wrong. "You scared me!" I exclaimed. "Sorry," he laughed. We walked inside and I went to the bedroom. "You okay? Where were you?" He asked. I
"I was with Mila and Herny. I didn't tell you because I thought you knew, and I thought I'd been home sooner." I explained. "Okay," he said. "You got all the laundry done?" He asked. "Yeah, It's all clean," I replied. He started walking up the hall toward the kitchen. I knew I had to tell him. I didn't know how he was going to react.
"We need to talk," I nervously said. He paused and stood in the hallway with his back facing me. I couldn't see his facial expression. "About what?" He asked, turning around and facing me. "I'm pregnant," I said calmly. He paused for a moment and looked shocked. "What?" He asked with a deep tone in his voice. "I'm pregnant," I repeated. "I heard what you said! Are you seriously pregnant? I can't have another child, Heather!" He yelled.
"Don't get upset! This was not planned!" I yelled back. "I can't believe this!" He yelled. He walked into the bedroom, past me, and put on his shoes and coat. "No! Don't leave!" I yelled. He walked out of the bedroom, past me, and started walking toward the front door to leave.
"Please don't leave! I'm sorry!" I yelled. "I can't have another kid! I already lost my first family, and now this?" He asked. "Don't leave!" I said. I needed him to stay so the police could find him. "I thought you were on birth control! He yelled. "I was! It doesn't always work!" I yelled. "Are you going to keep it?" He asked. The truth was, I didn't know. My dream was to always become a mother and now, I didn't know what to do.
"I don't know. Let's talk about this tomorrow." I said. I hugged him, and we walked back to our bedroom. We got ready for bed and went to sleep. But I never went to sleep. I lay there while he was asleep. This was my plan. I lay there for around two hours, making sure he was asleep. I heard him snoring and knew he was sleeping. I carefully slipped out of bed and grabbed my phone.
I sipped on my shoes, grabbed my phone off the charger, and grabbed my keys. I walked quietly down the hallway. Once I made it into the living room, I quickly opened the front door and started running down the steps. I clicked the unlock button on my keys and hopped in my car. I started my car and drove as fast as I could out of the parking lot and got on the road.
I got to Mila and Henry's apartment and started knocking on the door. They answered the door and looked confused about why I was there. "Why are you here?" She asked. I walked inside, and they stared at me. I didn't know what to say or what to tell them. I hugged him and sobbed into their arms.
"He's not Bradley! His name is David, and he fled to Seattle after killing his family in a house fire!" I explained. "What? I don't understand," She said. "Call them, Mila!" Henry raised his voice. "Call who?" She asked. "The police," He said. Mila called the police and explained the situation the best she could. They came to my apartment to arrest him and came to Mila and Herny's apartment to question me.
