*Chapter One* {Bringing Out the Dead}
For the first time, in nearly a thousand years, the dagger that has been embedded in Finn Mikaelson's chest is removed. Only when the greyish tent to his skin has vanished does his eyes open. He sits up noticing that his siblings, save for Klaus, are in the room as well. His younger sister, Rebekah, is climbing out of a coffin of her own and Kol, his younger brother, is satisfying his thirst.
Upon seeing Kol drink blood from a bag, Finn feels his own thirst burning in his throat. The pain is practically unbearable but he has lived with it for centuries. He's forgotten what it's like to not have the burning sensation. Nonetheless, he's relieved when his brother, Elijah, hands him a bag of blood. Wordlessly, Finn accepts it and drains every drop. It's not nearly enough to satisfying him but it's enough to get him moving.
"What year is it?" Kol asks their noble brother.
"2010," Elijah answered. Finn's heart drops like stone in water. He knew he had been in the coffin for a long time but he could hardly believe that they left him in there for as long as they had. However, he knew Elijah spoke the truth for he had no reason to lie.
"Well, at least I haven't missed much," Rebekah sighs feeling some relief that she hadn't been daggered for years but mere weeks, perhaps months.
"Our father is dead," Elijah informs them. Finn looks at him in disbelief. The man who had haunted them for so long is dead?
"And what of Niklaus?" Kol asks. The disbelief in Finn washes away and is filled with anger towards his bastard brother. He quickly flashes out of his coffin, eager to inflict some sort of revenge for being abandoned for so many years.
"Upstairs," Elijah motions to the staircase. "Follow me," He leads his siblings out of the basement and up to the main room. Finn is momentarily taken back by how updated everything is.
"Elijah... Why haven't you left?" Klaus asks apprehensively.
"Where are your manners, brother? We forgot dessert" Elijah says uncovering the two silver daggers, the third clutched in their sister's hand.
"What have you done?" Klaus whispers.
"What have you done?" Elijah retorted. "You see, I've learned not to trust your vulgar promises, Klaus. We're doing this on my terms now,"
"Kol," Klaus breathes as he's the first to enter the room.
"Long time, brother" Kol smirks enjoying the fear clearly displayed in not only Klaus's eyes but in his expression as well. Finn steps into the room and is quick to grab a dagger.
"Finn, don't!" Klaus pleads but it falls in deaf ears. The eldest brother races forwards and stabs him through the hand. Klaus tries to escape but ends up being blocked by Rebekah. She stabs him with her dagger dedicating it to their mother.
"You're free to go, this is family business" Elijah tells the two vampires that are also in the room. Finn spares them a glance but doesn't think much of it as he turns his attention back to his hybrid brother.
"I like what you've done with the new place, Nik" Rebekah says walking around. She picks up a vase and smashes it into a painting.
"I wanted it to be for all of us," Klaus painfully confesses. "A place we could all call home. A place we could all be a family. None of us would ever have to be alone again," Finn could help but to snarl at the audacity of his brother. How dare he consider them all family when they all left him to suffer in immobile silence for centuries on end.
"Well, you're right, none of us will be" Elijah agrees with him.
"You're staying behind," Finn tells him.
"We're leaving you, Nik. Right after I kill that doppelganger wench, then you will be alone. Always and forever" Rebekah taunts.
"If you run, I will hunt all of you down" Klaus snapped.
"Then you'll become everything you hate," Elijah tells him. "Out father"
"I'm the hybrid! I can't be killed! I have nothing to fear from any of you!" He snarls.
"You will when we have that coffin" Elijah tells him. A moment later, the front door opens. They all turn only to find their mother standing in the doorway. All of them are shocked into silence.
"Mother?" Rebekah whimpers.
"Look at me," Esther demands as she comes to a stop in front of Klaus. He eventually obeys. "Do you know why I'm here?"
"You're here to kill me," He assumes.
"Niklaus, you are my son and I am here to forgive you. I want us to be a family again." She corrects him. He looks at her in disbelief. Esther smiles caressing his cheek lightly before lowering her hand. She looks at all of her children with a content smile on her face. "Get some rest, all of you" She demands gently. "For tomorrow, we celebrate our reunion" She declares.
After the initial shocks of seeing their mother in front of them, they're all lead to their rooms. Finn looks around finding obvious and subtle differences in this room compared to the ones from before he was daggered.
Falling onto his fairly cushioned bed, Finn tries to get over the shock. Everything's changed. It's been over 900 years since he was up and walking around. It's been over 900 years since he lived his life. He knew he and his siblings never got along, he knew none of them cared for him like they cared for each other but he would have never thought they cared so little for him. Did they truly despise him so much that they left him to suffer for so long? Apparently.
Then his thoughts take a dramatic turn. Her name leaves his lips in a soft whisper, Sage. The beautiful and fair redhead he had fallen in love with so long ago. She consumed his thoughts but then reality sunk in. It's been centuries, if his only siblings can damn him for that long, then why would she wait? Surely she has moved on by now, moved on to someone better. He wouldn't blame her, who would wait for him for so long? Who could love him for so long? His siblings obviously didn't.
"Finn," His head snaps to the threshold of the room. He smiles seeing his mother walking towards him. He stands and flashes in front of her. He takes her into his arms, holding her tightly. She holds him back just as fiercely and for a moment, it's just silence. "Oh, my poor child" She whispers rubbing the back of his head. "Life has been so unfair for you," He holds back a whimper and holds her even tighter. "It's alright, my dear, it's alright" She comforts.
"How is this possible?" He asks pulling from her. "How are you here?" He asks tears brimming in his eyes. "Why did you leave me?"
"I didn't want to, darling," She whispers caressing his cheek. "I'm so sorry," She tells him. "I'm sorry for the pain you've experienced, I'm sorry that I'm the cause of all of it,"
"You're not," Finn shakes his head. "You may have turned us into this monstrosity but you didn't damn lock me away and forget about me,"
"I could never forget about you, my child" She tells him with a tender smile. "So much pain," She whispers seeing the emotion clearly in his eyes. "What if I told you that I could take it all away?" She whispers.
"What?" He asks frowning his eyebrows.
"Your pain, I can take it away," She tells him taking a step back. "I can help you get the revenge you crave so deeply towards the others."
"How?" Finn growls clenching his fists.
"I have a plan," She tells him. "And you, my dear boy, will play a very crucial part" She says closing the door behind her.
"What is it?" He asks her.
"When I turned you all into vampires, I never would have thought that so much death and destruction would follow," Esther sighs. "The ancestors allowed me to come back to try and fix my mistake. As much as I love all of you, I should have let you all die a thousand years ago. I should have never went against nature and so many have paid the price for my selfishness,"
"What are you talking about?" He asks slowly.
"This isn't easy for me to tell you," Esther admits. "But I have a plan to rid the world of vampires," Finn tilts his head and motions for her to continue. "All vampires are connected to you and your siblings. The sire lines. If one of you dies, then everyone you've turned, everyone in your sire line will die with you. Should you all die..."
"Vampires cease to exist" Finn realizes. Esther slowly nods. "What's your plan?" He asks her.
"At the ball tomorrow I'm going to use the blood of the doppelganger to link you and your siblings together. Then, I'm going to draw power from the Bennett blood line to turn you human. Once you're human... I'll kill you," She whispers ashamed for saying it out loud. "And with your death..."
"Comes the death of my siblings therefore ending the vampire species" Finn concludes. Esther hesitates but slowly nods.
"It's you're choice but I need you in order for this plan to work," Esther says. "You share my values, I know you do. You believe vampirism to be a curse to this world, help me cure it. Help me take your burden, your pain away"
Finn felt tempted to agree. He even opened his mouth but the words got stuck in his throat, he hesitated. Stepping back, he turns from her. His mind is swarmed once more with visions of Sage and the love he holds for her despite the fact that it is a love that is most likely not reciprocated any longer.
"You think of the woman you turned, the woman you love, even after all this time," Esther whispers. Finn's head turns towards her. "I watched you from the Other Side. Despite all that happened, I felt happy that you finally found a piece of happiness."
"She was all I had in a dark time," Finn whispers.
"She makes you hesitate," Esther states. Finn looks away ashamed. "It's not shameful to want to protect those you love, Finn" She says gently turning his head towards her. "Would it ease your mind if I told you she has already passed?" Esther asks.
"What?" Finn whispers, his shoulders sagging.
"Oh, love" Esther whispers. "Vampires may have been cursed with immortality but that does not make them invincible."
"What happened?" Finn asks eagerly. "What happened to her?"
"She got into a fight she could not win," Esther lies effortlessly. Finn, not seeing any reason to not believe her, falls to his knees. It was one thing to realize that she may no longer love him and quite another to learn that she's no longer living. "It wasn't painful," Esther says kneeling in front of him wishing to ease at least some of his pain. "She's found peace," She continues hoping that with his believe of his lovers demise, he would not hesitate to help her with her plan.
"Ok," Finn whispers. Esther slowly raises his head with her finger under his chin. "I'll do it," He tells her. "Whatever you need, I'll do it... Just take this pain away," He pleads.
"I will, my love," Esther promises hugging Finn tightly. "You'll know peace soon enough,"
Despite wanting to stay in his mothers comforting embrace for the rest of the night, he lets her go to start preparing for tomorrow. Once the door closes, signaling her exit, Finn falls apart. His body hunches over as the pain becomes nearly unbearable. He sobs, tears soaking his face.
He cries for Sage. He bawls out of guilt for having left her alone for so long feeling as if he had abandoned her. He weeps for the guilt of having turned her, perhaps she could have had a better life if he left her as a human. He cries for the memories they had shared together and the memories they could have created. He sobs for the pain and torment of being daggered and stuck in the coffin for so long. He wallows at the obvious hatred his siblings have for him. He cries for the normal, human life he could have had.

"I was in love once... I damned her to hell for my own selfish needs. I will not subject you to that same hell, you should get away from me while you can."
