Chapter 8
I don't think he's our guy...
"What?" Namjoon frowns at Yoongi, who is staring at him, a multitude of emotions flashing across his face.
He's just a cult child... hold on it's taking a moment to download.
"What are you, a computer?" Namjoon asks sarcastically, letting go of Yoongi and stepping back. He still has the necklace in his hands.
Put the necklace down... Z mutters, sounding pained. Namjoon places the necklace on the table, looking at a dumbfounded Yoongi.
"Who... who are you talking to?" Yoongi asks.
Tell him the truth, I'm going to need a minute to pull apart his life story.
"Fine," Namjoon gestures for Yoongi to sit down again, returning to his seat. Yoongi numbly does as he is told.
"Okay... what's going on Namjoon?" Yoongi asks, his eyes wide with fear.
"It's... a long story..." Namjoon starts, unsure if he should actually be telling Yoongi about Z.
He was raised by cult members... Do you remember that cult?
"Ahh, that cult," Namjoon starts to realise what has happened.
There is a cult that follows the Xanthus belief system, the religion Z is an entity of. When Namjoon first researched what Z could possibly be, Z directed him to a very old, large book that explained the Xanthus. They are an old Celtic-based religion from an old civilisation, the Xanthus people. The Xanthus people followed and believed in 12 gods, 6 gods and 6 goddesses. These gods each had a role, such as agriculture, sun, moon, etc. All Namjoon knows is Z is either one of the 6 gods or an entity under these gods. Z refuses to talk about his pantheon, but he has immense power, so Namjoon has assumed he is one of the gods rather than a simple earth-based spirit.
"Alright, so you know of the Xanthus religion?" Yoongi starts. He is shaking slightly as if he is trying to hold onto his sanity a little longer.
"Yes, one of the Xanthus gods speaks to me," Namjoon explains. Yoongi sits back and groans.
"Oh my god, you're one of those nut jobs," He brushes a stray hair from his face, his dark eyes darting.
"I'm not crazy," Namjoon grumbles, "All I know is he is from that religion, but I call him Z,"
"Have you been tested for schizophrenia?" Yoongi asks.
"Yes," Namjoon says simply, "Z knows things I couldn't possibly guess,"
"Oh yeah?" Yoongi scoffs, "Tell me something you couldn't possibly know,"
"Z?"
Min Yoongi is bisexual.
Oh?
"Z tells me you are bisexual," Namjoon says, giving Yoongi a smug look. Yoongi goes pale and begins stuttering.
"H-H-How do you know that? I haven't told anyone that..." Yoongi mutters.
"Exactly. The only way I could know that is if an omniscient being told me," Namjoon explains, moving closer to Yoongi.
"I mean... you could have guessed that" Yoongi starts explaining, trying to convince himself that Namjoon is wrong.
"Anything else Z?"
His first boy crush was in elementary school, Z chuckles, His crush had a twin sister, which Yoongi also liked. That's when he realised that he is bisexual.
Namjoon explains what Z has said. Yoongi goes even paler, looking like he is going to faint.
"Okay... that's harder to... how could you possibly...?"
"Because, again, an omniscient being told me," Namjoon snaps, "Do you think I want this? I wish nothing more than to be normal,"
"Okay... okay..." Yoongi points to Namjoon, "Let's say you do have a Xanthus god talking to you... what does that have to do with me?"
He's definitely not our guy, Z confirms, He was raised by cult members. He moved out at 16 because he couldn't deal with it any longer. He is a firm atheist.
"Okay, Z tells me you moved out at 16 to get away from your family?" Namjoon asks. Yoongi nods, his shoulders slumped forward, as if the weight of all this information is dragging him down.
"They... they were hurting people," Yoongi explains, "I couldn't deal with it anymore. I only wear that stupid necklace because it looks cool. My father gave it to me when I was 6. He said that it will protect me from all demons,"
Tell him that it doesn't protect him from demons. It protects him from every single possible entity on the planet.
Namjoon repeats what Z told him, watching Yoongi warily. He is starting to worry that this revelation is too much for Yoongi.
Just like my mother.
"Right... wait... every single entity?" Yoongi's eyes go wide, "What other creatures are there?"
"Every single known belief system is real," Namjoon explains, "Every god, spirit, demon, and pantheon known to man exists,"
"Oh," Yoongi slides down in his chair, staring off into the distance, "Right,"
"Not everything humans say is true, but we have been interacting with divinity since the beginning of our time on earth,"
Namjoon pauses, allowing Yoongi to take this information in. He understands this must be hard, especially after watching his family disown him and his elementary school friends wanting to end him.
After a very long time, Yoongi takes a very deep breath in before letting it out slowly. He closes his eyes and breathes for a moment. Then, he opens his eyes and sits up in his chair, looking at Namjoon.
"I guess it isn't that crazy, huh?" Yoongi chuckles.
Namjoon lets out the breath he didn't realise he was holding. Relief and happiness flood his body, making him feel slightly dizzy with contentment. Finally, there is someone who believes him. Someone he can talk to about all this. Someone he can trust.
"It's still pretty weird," Namjoon chuckles.
"I guess," Yoongi shrugs, "But I still don't understand... why does any of this have anything to do with me?"
Namjoon explains to Yoongi everything Z has told him about Hana and protecting her. It doesn't take him long, considering Z refuses to tell him anything about her.
"Wait, Z is omniscient, right?" Yoongi frowns, "Shouldn't he know who is going to hurt her?"
"That's a good question..." Namjoon mutters, waiting for Z's response.
I know everything that has happened and is happening. To make it easier to know these things, I only take on the information I need. The future though? That is always changing. Have you never heard of the butterfly effect?
"He says that the future is harder to predict," Namjoon summarises, "I guess because of the butterfly effect?"
Every time you move, every single decision, conscious or not, that you make changes your future. And then, on top of that, every single decision that every other being on this planet makes also affects your future. That's just your possible future. The possibilities are infinite, literally.
"Sorry, he's going on a rant about the future," Namjoon mutters, rolling his eyes. Yoongi smirks and chuckles at Namjoon's discomfort.
"He's not wrong," Yoongi shrugs, "I guess fate is not a possibility, right?"
Oh no. Everyone has something they are fated to do. The universe ensures that each individual is dealt the cards they need to reach that destiny. Some people live the life they were destined to, some don't.
"Nope, fate is real," Namjoon responds, "Just some people don't follow their destiny,"
For example, Namjoon you were fated to be the being I would inhabit to do what needs to be done. But there were many timelines where I don't inhabit you.
"I'm sorry, inhabit me?" Namjoon's eyes go wide, "You are inside me?!"
Why else do you think only you can hear me?
"Z is inside you?" Yoongi looks Namjoon up and down, "Shouldn't you be stronger or something?"
Namjoon flexes his fingers, looking at them with fascination.
"Am I...?" Namjoon asks.
No. This isn't a superhero movie. I'm just possessing you without controlling you.
"Possessing me?!" Namjoon stands up, "What the fuck..."
"Namjoon, you are 20 years old now... you never thought to ask these questions?" Yoongi smirks.
"I mean, I did at one point..." Namjoon thinks back to when he was a child, sitting in his room asking Z a million and one questions.
Can we get back to this cult? Z mutters, sounding uncomfortable, I don't know much about them because they wear those stupid pendants.
"Oh, right," Namjoon sits down, "He wants to know more about the cult,"
"Okay," Yoongi nods, "Well, the one I was raised in believes and follows Xedysus, the father of the gods,"
"Xedysus?" Namjoon asks.
"Yeah, he is like the Zeus of the Xanthus pantheon," Yoongi chuckles.
Don't compare me to Zeus... he's crazy.
Namjoon jumps to his feet, startling Yoongi again.
"What do you mean, 'Me'?" Namjoon asks loudly.
Oh...
"What did he say?" Yoongi asks.
"He said 'Don't compare me to Zeus'" Namjoon repeats, "I think Z is Xedysus,"
Listen...
"You are possessed by Xedysus?" Yoongi mutters, in complete awe, "Wow, no wonder you're smart,"
"I got you now!" Namjoon cheers, jumping as he becomes excited, "I finally know who you are, Xedysus,"
Damn it...
"What is he saying?" Yoongi asks curiously, looking just as excited as Namjoon.
"Nothing, really," Namjoon responds, "He's just saying, 'Oh no' and 'Listen'" Namjoon laughs.
Yoongi snickers at Namjoon's words.
Okay, yeah... I am Xedysus... but just call me Z, please.
"Okay, I'll call you Z," Namjoon nods, feeling confident as he sits down and addresses Yoongi, "Dude, I'm so glad I met you. I'm learning so much today,"
Yoongi continues laughing lightly.
"Wait, if he is Xedysus surely he can move out of your body at will,"
I can... but returning will be hard.
"He says returning will be hard," Namjoon explains.
"I see... anyway!" Yoongi claps his hands enthusiastically, "The cult,"
"Oh, yes! What do you know?" Namjoon asks.
"Well, I didn't really pay attention to a lot of it," Yoongi explains, "All I remember is the night I walked in on them murdering this young girl... she would have been the same age as me at the time," Yoongi gulps, his eyes shining as he recalls the incident, "They were doing some sort of banishing ritual as if trying to send her back to hell or something. I don't really know,"
Namjoon nods, contemplating.
That's their plan for Hana, Z says.
"Z said that's their plan for Hana," Namjoon mutters, fear building inside of him.
"But... why Hana?" Yoongi asks, "I don't know why they chose that girl... she attended school near here,"
"Maybe they're trying to find Hana?" Namjoon suggests, "Maybe there is something about Hana that makes them think she's a demon or something,"
"Or they could be looking for girls that look a certain way," Yoongi suggests, "The girl back then looked very similar to Hana,"
"What do you think Z?" Namjoon asks.
Z doesn't respond.
"What did he say?" Yoongi asks quickly. He has accepted this whole thing quite quickly and comfortably. Which makes sense considering the things he saw growing up.
"He didn't respond," Namjoon groans with frustration, "Come on, Z, you have to give me something,"
You don't need to know.
"What?" Namjoon snaps, feeling frustrated.
"What? What is it?" Yoongi asks again.
"He says we don't need to know," Namjoon shakes his head, "How do you expect us to help her if we don't know what to help her with?"
You don't need to know anything else. You know her history, and you know that the cult is looking for her. That's all you need to know.
"That's not fair!" Namjoon yells, "Why do you even care about humans? You're a god! She is a random human girl. Why do you care so much about her specifically?"
Yoongi watches on, picking up on what Z is saying just by Namjoon's responses.
Fine.
Namjoon sits up straight, waiting for him to explain.
All you need to understand is that she's important to me.
"She is important to you?" Namjoon groans, "How? Why?"
"She is important to him?" Yoongi repeats, "I don't understand,"
Z doesn't say anything else, going completely silent.
"Z?"
He doesn't respond.
"Okay..." Yoongi sighs, figuring Z isn't going to continue, "So we know you are possessed by a Xanthus god, more specifically Xedysus. We know the Xedysus cult is after Hana, but we don't know why. We know Hana is important to Z, but we don't know why. And we know that the cult uses the protection sigil to hide from Z," Yoongi summarises.
"Pretty much," Namjoon grumbles.
Yoongi contemplates this for a moment, leaving them to sit in silence. The only thing that is going through Namjoon's head is Z's words.
All you need to understand is that she's important to me.
Why is a very normal human girl important to an immortal, omniscient god? It doesn't make sense. She has both of her parents, she has never been bullied, she is not religious, and she has lived a good life. She is neither rich nor poor, she is not crazy smart, nor stupid. Just... average.
"Honestly, Namjoon," Yoongi sighs, "I don't know where to go from here,"
Namjoon sighs, all these facts going around and around his mind.
"Me neither,"
