Chapter 51
After dinner, Saskia immediately went back to her room. She would now need all her strength to write this mail, actually she didn't want it at all. But she found no other solution to the dilemma. Sia couldn't and didn't want to talk to Lionel anymore, everything had been said between them.
She took out her notebook and turned it on. She wrote the fateful text that would change her future for good. She sent the e-mail to the personnel department and took a deep breath in and out.
Now there was no turning back.
Saskia switched her phone back on. Immediately it showed her several messages and missed calls. The number of her flatmate was also there, how appropriate, she thought to herself, and called her right back. She picked up immediately and actually wanted to tell her that someone was looking for her in their shared apartment.
But Saskia was so in her element that she didn't let her speak and just wanted to get rid of her own message: "I wanted to inform you that you have to look for a new flatmate. As I'm sure you've noticed, I haven't been around for a while. I will get my things these days and as of next month, someone new could already take over my room."
On the other end of the line it was silent for a moment, on this shock the roommate completely forgot to tell her what she actually would have wanted from her. "Okay, I'll find someone right away," she said stressed. The conversation was over and Saskia hung up.
Nervously she stroked her hair. These changes in her life were happening a bit too fast for her now, but what else could she do? She was far too proud of herself, she certainly wouldn't run after Lionel! Saskia still looked through the messages and remaining calls, but there was nothing special there.
Lionel had already been working all morning, he kept looking at his watch, or at his phone. That stubborn woman! What was he going to do with Sassy? He was torn, actually this would be a clean cut now, wasn't that what he had actually wanted? Since he couldn't and wouldn't give her the future she deserved anyway?
He didn't know.
For the first time he felt at a loss, he wanted her, but somehow he didn't either. He rubbed his face several times until he stood up, annoyed, and paced restlessly in his office. He wanted to see her at least once more, even if it led nowhere. He picked up his phone and called Mihai to drive up in the Rolls-Royce.
Lionel ran his fingers restlessly through his silvery hair and walked quickly through the corridors and down the few steps until he reached the outside. He got into his limousine and said curtly to his chauffeur, "Take me to Saskia's apartment, I need to talk to her."
Mihai bit his lips, knowing that driving there was pretty much a waste of time. Saskia was certainly not back from her relatives. But he had sworn to himself that he would only let his boss know if he explicitly asked him about it. Thus, without saying anything, he drove towards London.
Lionel did not like the situation at all, because actually he did not run after anybody. He tried to blame it on the cooperation with her and not to go into the private. Even though he was aware himself that he was lying to himself, he was not that naive.
When they arrived in front of the run-down building, Lionel got out and wrinkled his nose. He held a small piece of paper in his hand that had the floor and apartment number on it. At least there was something positive about the fact that he had found out the exact apartment address through Human Resources.
As he stepped into the building, he saw that he would have to walk up the steps, since this building didn't have an elevator. "What a fucked up apartment complex," he muttered to himself in a bad mood until he reached the right floor.
Undeterred, he knocked on the worn apartment door, hoping someone was home. When the door was pulled open, he froze for a moment as a man stood in front of him, much younger than he was.
Lionel had to pull himself together to keep his composure, what was this all about?
"Is Saskia present?" he spoke, trying not to let his uncertainty show.
The muscular man just looked at him quizzically and then turned into the apartment and called inside, "Baby, will you come here, there's a man in a suit at the door, are you expecting someone?"
Lionel's jealousy shot up to unimagined heights when he heard the man speak like that. But when it wasn't Saskia who came around the corner, but a woman he didn't know, he expelled the held air in relief.
"Hello, Saskia doesn't live here anymore, at least not currently," the young woman said as she stepped closer to the entrance and looked Mister Shahbandar up and down.
"Do you know where she is currently?", Lionel asked the woman.
"No, I'm afraid I don't," she replied.
To that he just nodded and left, leaving the couple standing at the door.
Lionel knew right away that it was a complete nonsense to look for her. How could he be so stupid as to think that she would be waiting for him somewhere, and that she might even be happy to see him?
He still felt the jealousy, even if this had not been Saskia's partner. So it could well be that she was with another man. Although he did not estimate Saskia in such a way, these thoughts nevertheless did not want to disappear. Annoyed, he got into the limousine and ordered Mihai to drive on to the company.
Concentrating, Shahbandar had been working in his company for hours without interruption when there was a knock on his glass door. Astonished, he looked up and waved for the person to enter.
"What's important?" he immediately inquired.
"I just wanted to inform you that your assistant had quit by mail earlier," the employee anxiously replied.
"Excuse me?!" he exclaimed loudly, unable to believe what he had just heard.
"Y-yes, a mail came earlier, I can send it to you if you like," said the woman, thus hoping to disappear quickly. For she was incredibly afraid of her domineering boss.
"Send me the mail, now!" he shouted angrily.
The employee ran away and was glad to get out of his office.
