Chapter 27

When you are waiting for something, time really flows at a slower pace.

That was how I was feeling now with Sargam's head leaning on my shoulder waiting for the doctor to come and say something. And after a few minutes, the doctor in his white coat covered by tiny specks of blood and a mask covering his face appeared outside. His demeanour appeared calm while ours was fully scared to know the unknown. We all stood up to get the news with a cloud of nervousness surrounding us. I could see Sargam shaking with the fear of his assumptions being true. I entwined my hand with squeezing in assurance when the doctor started speaking."Your wife is surely a lucky woman." He said it with a smile to Sargam's dad. He continued with a dramatic pause,"She has major injuries in her head resulting into concussions. Otherwise her hand is fractured which had pieces of glass which have been removed and she is out of any danger. She will wake up within the next 24 hours." And with a nod acknowledging our presence, he left us with relief that can't be described in mere words.

Sargam slumped in his place with my hands still entwined making me sit again as well. Another nurse left the room and said"She is allowed to take visitors. Two at a time." Sargam still hadn't left my hand which meant that he wanted his dad to go first. His dad went inside with restlessness visible in his eyes. I immediately informed our friends about the situation. They were going to be here in the next ten minutes. That's what they'd said. I knew that Sargam needed more support than just me for waiting until the next 24 hours.

His bright blue eyes, once again dull, were void of emotions for the time being. I can feel that he's too stressed. Soon, his father left the room and I went inside along with Sargam. As we entered the room, he tightened the hold on my hand as if I was going to disappear at any moment. I squeezed his hand once again to reassure that I was there with him. He slowly sat by the side of his mom and said with tears glistening his eyes,"Mom, I'd told you that I'd run any errands for you. But you left the house still and then this happened. I'm sorry...I'm sorry for not being there for you like grandpa." He once again broke down into sobs and my heart clenched. I kept my hands on his shoulder as a gesture to comfort him and he continued saying,"Mom I don't want you to leave me like grandpa. So please... please wake up soon." After sitting there silently for a few moments, we left the room.

When we were outside, we found our friends waiting for us bombarding with questions, the biggest one,"why didn't you inform us earlier?" to which both of us had just shrugged not having a reply. At last, they visited aunty as well and left after lending some support. It was already midnight by then and I asked Sargam and his dad to leave as they looked weary. Sargam had said nothing but his father replied,"Both of you can leave. You both have to go to college tomorrow." Realisation dawned upon me and we both left. We first decided to go to Sargam's house as it was my car. He asked me to come inside and told me to sit on his bed. Something was going on in his mind. He asked,"Can you stay here for the night? I don't want to be alone at the moment." I understood his situation and called my mum for permission which she granted immediately. I was once again sitting on the bed cross legged when Sargam slept in my lap. His eyes were closed deeply exhausted with a creased forehead. I ran my hands through his hair giving a bit of massage to ease his tension and the creases on his forehead started reducing. I felt relieved. And just in a few minutes with a pillow supporting my backside, I was in my dreamland.
