Epilogue
"There is never a moment in which I do not adore you."
Good seven years later. ((:
Saboohi
Ugghh why on earth was this noisy thing even invented!
I inwardly groaned before pinching my eyes shut tightly. My impatient fingers inched the blanket upwards towards my chest and I snuggled into the warmth of the thick fabric.
" Shut up!"
I gritted out to the blaring device that was hell bent on scaring my sleep away.
Minutes down and I stretched out my arms, curving my spine. The blanket falling down my arms and I sat up. My eyes bathing travelled to the manly figure who was still cutely snuggled with the pillow thinking it was me. I smiled before leaning over the pillow and pecking Jahan's cheek quickly. The huge sun was bathing it's sunlight through the windows and I smiled before rolling down the bed.
Kneeling down, I picked up every toy on the way to the bathroom. Getting down with my business, I brushed my teeth seeing bright butterscotch eyes look at me through the mirror. Washing away the foam, I straightened up and ran a hand through my hair. Rich brown hair, yes, I had settled over dark brown hair as Jahan liked the colour and I had shortened them till the ends of my scapulas. My cheeks were more filled now giving me that round shaped face. And my bones had gotten accustomed to more muscles now. And surely I did not fit in the petite category anymore. Leaving the bathroom, I made my way to the walk-in closet.
Swapping my nightwear with a blush pink kurta and white pants, I walked out of the walk-in closet. Reaching the vanity table, I brushed my hair and pulled them in a low bun and stared at myself a little longer.
" Aren't you glowing a little too much for a Monday morning?" I asked the reflection that stared back.
Adjusting the collar, I noticed what I had just said. And my posture turned stiff.
" Monday?" I voiced ghastly.
" Monday?" I repeated.
Whirlwind, I turned and looked at sleeping Jahan still in bed and sheets.
" Oh shit! School. The kids need to go to school."
I yelled hurrying towards my phone. The time on the display read past nine. And I groaned. Panicking inwardly I pulled the blanket off Jahan and yelled.
" Wakeup! We're late again."
The nonchalant man turned on his back. His eyes turning towards me and he croaked a smile.
" Awe Saboohi, the color looks so good on you baby."
I rolled my eyes and playfully not so playfully hit him with the pillow.
" Get up and help me. They are half an hour late all because of you."
I pointed my finger at him and scolded seeing him give me an innocent look and I narrowed my eyes.
" Saboohi!"
He fell back on the pillows as I made my side of the bed.
" Don't Saboohi me. Last night you said you'll wake me up early. And you did not!"
" Ouff."
" Get the kids I am going in the kitchen."
I hurried out of the room and down the stairs.
Three years ago, we had moved out of the Haveli. Jahan had bought a home not very far from the Haveli and was only minutes down the road. And as much as sad we were to leave the Haveli and everyone behind, we were happy to shift in our home.
This place wasn't huge like the Haveli but enough to call it our kingdom. Our dream home. The kids room and our master bedroom was upstairs and we even had a nice large terrace that looked over our backyard. We had designed it with a few chairs for tea time and a nice brunch in the sun. A nice big study and playroom for the children. The stairs were straight and led us down to the main living area. Our living room was very spacious and we had a nice sitting area. The open kitchen adjoined the living room and I loved the large marble island. We had gotten high stools for the kids and we mostly had our breakfast here. Afaaf and Zaryaab loved to stay over most weekends and for them we had turned the spare room downstairs into a nice comfy guest room.
We did not have a garden but we did have a nice backyard where the kids loved to play and we mostly had our evening barbeques there. The home was all polished in dark rich brown with off white paint. And a mirror wall for the living area. All in all, this home had our love and this was the most for our family. Jahan and I had handpicked everything and our kids were growing up in this home and we were happy and content.
Clipping the lunch boxes, I set down the blue and pink water bottles on the countertop. Reaching towards the frying pan, I dished out the scrambled eggs and got the toasts ready. Setting the long milk glasses on the counter, I huffed as my eyes momentarily shifted to the wall clock seeing it read forty five past nine.
" Rohaan, Hana." I called out from the kitchen before wiping my hands with a kitchen towel and rushing up the stairs.
Opening Hana's bedroom door, I found the room empty and quiet and so I moved to the next door. Opening the door I was greeted to the sight of my daughter, Hana.
" Mommy."
The five years old greeted with a grinning mouth and I grinned back. Leaning down I engulfed my bundle of joy into my arms. Her little arms encircling around my neck. Hana had the brightest of eyes. Amber brown and so much bright that stood out with her smile. Thick lashes set around her eyes and cute round cheeks. Thick light brown long hair that I usually braided. She had mostly inherited her features from her father. And she was the beautifullist baby girl.
" Who did your hair?" I asked surprised seeing two neat pigtails.
" Papa did." She said twiddling with the strands and I gave her forehead a quick kiss.
" Good, let's get you packed now." I said seeing my daughter already reaching for her school bag.
" Where Rohaan and Papa, Hana."
I asked curiously and Hana giggled. Her little fingers pointed to the attached bathroom and I peered looking at the duo as Jahan jelled Rohaan's hair. I gasped.
" Jahan."
His amber brown eyes fell over me and he stiffened leaving the comb to fall down on the floor.
" Mama."
Rohaan said grinning as he came towards me. I gave him a quick hug seeing his shirts button all wrong.
" Uoffou! Jahan's do you not know how to button a child's shirt?" I pointed out annoyed as my shaky fingers undid all the buttons of our sons shirt before doing them all again.
" Papa, my clip!" Hana pouted and Jahan rushed to her.
" Oh sweety, I got it."
He clipped her pink flower clip and I glared at him for wasting all the time.
" Hana pack your stuff with papa ok."
I said and helped Rohaan with his bag.
" My science project." Rohaan gasped and rushed out of the room and I huffed.
" Its all because of you that we are late yet again." I glared at Jahan as he ruthlessly tried zipping Hana's bag.
" Why?"
He gasped, acting innocent and I narrowed my eyes.
"Who told you to put on that finding fish movie for the hundredth time last night."
" It's a good movie."
He said nonchalantly and I rolled my eyes.
" We watch that movie every weekend Jahan, there's nothing nice about that movie except that our kids get late for school."
I countered back between Hana and Rohaan jumping around us for their stuff.
" Well next week we're gonna start the toy story marathon." The man grinned and I stood up from my place on the floor. Shaking my head.
" No movies on Sunday nights now."
I said in finality.
" Why? The kids love watching movies with us." Jahan whispered as we walked with the kids down the stairs.
" Right now I am only thinking about our children's school and you should do the same."
I said sweetly. Seeing the man throw me a grin before kissing my cheek. And despite the anger I felt, I still blushed.
Hana and Rohaan settled down for quick breakfast and I packed in their bags with lunch. Jahan sipped his tea and just as I lifted my cup to my lips, a crying interrupted us.
" Ruhi is up!"
Hana and Rohaan said with wide smiles and mouthful and I shook my head.
" Not now kids, have breakfast and I'll check up on her."
" Saboohi, I'll go."
Jahan said as he rested his hand over my shoulder and I smiled.
" Finish up tea, I've got this" I politely declined and made my way up the stairs.
Ruhi was our almost two year old daughter. She was the fussiest baby among our three kids. A whole drama queen even at such a young age. She was everyone's favorite.
"Oui my baby is up." I gushed as I walked over to her large crib in Hana's room.
Her chubby hands rattled around the wooden railings and she stared at me with teary eyes.
" Aw what happened princess?" I asked lifting her up in my arms.
" Oh hi princess." Jahans voice interrupted us and I looked as the man leaned over the door.
" Look papa." I said to Ruhi as she squirmed in my arms.
" The kids missed their school van now I am gonna ask Zaryaab if he could drop the kids." He shrugged and shook my head at him.
" No movies, I am telling you."
Grabbing Ruhi's favourite ducky duck, I gave it to her. All the while seeing Jahan throwing kisses at me as he dialed Zaryaab.
" Oh hey. Yeah we're good.. yeah yeah.. could you please drop the kids at school again we're late and I have the day off so..yeah."
He looked at me and shrugged. Pacing around the doorway he huffed.
" Oh yeah. Fuck man I am sorry. Yeah thanks you've got me. Thanks."
" Fuckk."
I stiffened looking down at Ruhi as she intently looked at her father.
" Bad word baby no."
I bubbled up the gasp and spoke instead. Her large eyes turned to me and she wiggled her toy enthusiastically.
" Fuckk fucckkk."
She spoke in broken words and I shook my head.
" Look, ducky duck."
I tried explaining her.
" Oh fuck yes."
Jahan's voice cut in between and Ruhi turned her eyes to her father again.
" Fuckky buck."
I gasped and placed my hand over her mouth slightly.
" No Ruhi, bad word."
My widened eyes turned to Jahan seeing him disconnect the call.
" He's coming to pick Rohaan and Hana."
" Oh thank-"
" Auckk." Ruhi wiggled in my arms and she yanked and slammed her toy against my shoulder.
" Oh shit. No Ruhi bad word."
Jahan spoke surprised as he took her from my arms. And I folded my arms against my chest.
" What did I say about swearing, Jahan. Now look she's learning from you." I hissed in a whisper and he rocked Ruhi in his arms.
" I didn't know she was gonna catch it this quickly."
He chuckled and I glared seeing the man swallow.
" Okay sorry. Ducky baby."
He said to Ruhi and I rolled my eyes before leaving the duo behind. Zaryaab was kind enough to take Hana and Rohaan to school and as the children left, I worked onto clean the kitchen while my husband looked over our daughter. Relieved, I followed Jahan up the stairs ready to start the day but the man had other plans as he walked into the bedroom with Ruhi cradled to his chest.
" Let's sleep."
He sang to Ruhi and I placed my hands over my hips looking at the two as they cuddled in bed.
" Not happening."
I sang in return. Jahan's amber brown eyes shit to me and he held out his hand for me.
" But whyy?"
I ignored his hands and instead reached for Ruhi who grinned leaping towards my arms.
" Because you said you'll go for groceries with me. And we have to go."
" But it's so early, Saboohi."
The grown man looked no less than our two years old as he whined. I chuckled and poked his arm, standing by his side.
" Please Jahan, we really have to go. We're running out of stuff."
Ruhi got distracted as she played with my collar as I lovingly glared at her father.
" I promise I'll take you for groceries but let's rest for a while. I am super lazy today."
" Tch Jahan."
I gave him my most pleading eyes and he smirked. Pulling my arm he successfully made me land in his embrace with our daughter in between us. His cheek rested against mine and he cuddled us. Making me instantly give in.
" I promise I'll take you naaa. Please please please."
I smiled and managed to shake my head.
We were nearing almost more than eight years of togetherness and each day I felt grateful for everything I had. For the love I had. And for Jahan. He still made me feel butterflies and still made me blush. And still he would let me hijack his planet unladylike. And I would still always welcome him to my planet. And each time in his warm embrace and looking into his amber brown eyes, I would fall for him all over again. And he'd fall for me all over again.
And we just loved so much.
•
" Oh you guys are finally here."
I smiled as aunty Serina wrapped her arms around me.
" You look lovely Saboohi but where are the kids."
I giggled pointing my thumbs in backward direction.
" Thankyou, they're coming with their father."
I moved ahead holding the bunch of flowers and the cookie platter in my hands. Afaaf's ever smiling face came into view and she squealed. Hugging my sister in law, I stared at her in amazement seeing that she looked so wonderful in a fuchsia pink shalwar kameez.
"Wow, this colour looks so good on you. You're glowing."
She giggled doing a half twirl.
" It's a gift from you Saboohi how would it not make me glow."
She said as we laughed together. As we entered the large hall we were greeted by Dadi Gul Jan and Khan Dada. They had gotten weak, very weak. But we were glad we still had their presence with us. In minutes, the once large silent Haveli was filled with children running along and playing, with stirring of spoons in tea cups and soft laughter. It was yet another of our evenings being spent with our loved ones.
" We should certainly go for a picnic now."
Zaryaab interjected and all eyes moved to look at him.
" Yes let's plan something."
Afaaf's hand reached mine and she quirked up making me grin.
" But this time, Mum dad and you two would have to go with us as well."
Jahan pointed to his grandparents and Dadi Gul Jan shook her head.
" We get tired with all the walking and mostly we'll only trouble you. You guys go have fun we are just fine here."
The large hall again erupted in protests and in finality we had won over Dadi Gul Jan's refusal.
I stood up to feed Ruhi some soft biscuits as she fought with Maher, snatching his toy car and throwing it again and again on the floor.
" Ruhi, no."
I said yet again as she teased Maher. Mohid being the most elder among all the children had a hard time keeping everyone under control and especially Ruhi, she was a rebel. Jahan would say Ruhi was just like me.
" Where's Hana?" I asked Mohid as he set up all the Lego on the floor.
" Er. She went outside Sabbo."
The little boy said giving me a sweet smile and I melted as always for the sweet nickname he always called me with. Yet my frown returned as I pressed my thoughts towards Hana who seemed disturbed since she had returned from school today.
" I'll go get her."
My head turned to the man as he stood up from his place not very far from where I sat with the kids on the carpet, making me wonder if he had just read my nind. My eyes trailed Jahan's figure until he went out to the open garden area.
Making sure Ruhi was fed, I left her with the boys as Zaryaab sat with the kids as well and I walked Dadi Gul Jan to her room.
" You will stay for dinner?"
The wise old lady asked as I draped the thin blanket upto her stomach, making me nod and smile softly at her. She smiled in return and closed her eyes, making it my que to leave. Upon entering the kitchen I saw Afaaf and aunty Serina checking up on the food.
" We've made your favorite pulao today."
Afaaf said and I squealed. Making aunt Serina chuckle.
" Go get Jahan and the kids and we'll have dinner set up shortly."
She added making me instantly nod.
Leaving the kids be, I slowly walked out to the garden area seeing the sun minutes away from setting down. My butterscotch eyes looked around until the spotted the two people on the swings as they talked, emersed in their own world.
My heart melted at the sight, seeing my princess dressed in a similar lilac dress as mine hold hands with her father as he sat trapped in the small swing seat, yet he didn't seem to care. Relieved, I wanted to leave the two alone but as Jahan spoke, I stopped in my tracks.
" -hm it does happen. Some people you meet are nice and some are not. But you should never treat the not-so-nice people the same way they treat you. The more humble and kind you are, the more big heart you'll have."
" But dadda, if they still treat you bad and don't.. don't wanna be friends with you?"
Hana said and my heart shuddered. She was having problem at school?
" Uhm hm! Then you can always distance yourself with people who don't want to be with you. And you should befriend people who want to stay with you, my love."
" Dadda, will I find my best friend?"
Her innocent question did something to my heart and my eyes filled with unshed tears. I didn't want her to be like Saboohi.
" Yes you will, my love. Hey-"
Jahan said as he turned towards Hana and reached for her. Effortlessly he picked her up and sat her on his lap. His hand cupping her cheek.
" If someone treats you ill, know that dadda will take care of them. And that dadda and Rohaan are always there for you. And you don't have to force friendship over someone. Just give things sometime and everything will settle down."
He kissed the crown of her head. I took the edge of my lilac long dupatta and dabbed it under my eyes, in attempts of removing the traces of tears knowing that their conversation was coming to an end.
" Okay dadda!"
She slipped down on the ground and wound her hands around her father's neck and I took a step back not wanting to interrupt their moment for even a second.
I was just so overwhelmed that my kids would never be less protected and less loved. They would never be Saboohi. Because Jahan wouldn't let them be weak. And that he would be there for them. My tears wouldn't stop.
" Can I ask you a question?" She asked when they pulled away.
" Do you have a best friend?"
I smiled in between tears, awaiting Jahan's answer.
" Yes I do have, want to know her name?"
Hana nodded.
" Her name is Saboohi."
Hana giggled.
" That's mommy."
She said and Jahan tickled her.
" Yes and she's my best friend. Do you know who's my other best friend?"
" Um no."
Jahan embraced her again and squeezed her.
" Her name is Hana. And I want to be Hana's best friend too. Would Hana make me her best friend?"
He asked softly and I watched Hana's expressions as a grin blew her features and she laughed.
" Yes dadda."
The two shared smiles. And I inhaled in a deep breath. My stilettoes hit the steps as I walked down them and gained the duos attention.
" Everyone's calling inside, come on."
Hana ran towards me, her smiling face making me squeeze her to me.
" Dadi Ma is calling you, baby."
" Aha, I had to make salad with her."
She giggled before running inside. I straightened up, seeing Jahan look at me quizzically.
" Hmm, someone was eavesdropping."
He teased with squinted eyes and I tried to brush it off but as soon as my husband caught hold of my wrist, tears started to brim my eyes.
" Hey, what happened?"
He coaxed. And I shook my head almost easily melting against his chest as he pulled my closer.
" I dont know what I did to deserve you."
I sniffed into his shirt as he rubbed my back.
" Hey shsh."
" Thankyou Jahan."
I said pulling back and looking into his amber brown beautiful eyes. He smiled softly and tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear.
" For what?"
He questioned and I shrugged.
" I dont know, for everything maybe-"
" And I love you."
He silenced me, dotting kisses over my forehead.
" I love you too."
We walked into the house hand in hand.
We had a great family and we were grateful. We had three crazily wonderful children, a nice home and a beautiful family. And we were too in love. At last Ronaq was right, love would always find its way into the heart and how could it not. She was right about everything.
As dinner was served, my eyes momentarily landed on her photo framed on the wall opposite the stairs and I looked into her round beautiful eyes. And I smiled. And my heart filled with love. Jahan's hand found my hand under the table and he gave it a squeeze making me give him a quick glance seeing him engrossed in a banter with Zaryaab. Our kids and elders all surrounding us. And my eyes landed on the photo frame again.
Thankyou Ronaq for gifting me such a precious family.
