[09-I] Please Come Back For Me
Three sharp knocks cut through the room as their heads swiveled to the metal door.
A young man, about her age, emerged from the door, wearing an oversized lab coat and blond, almost white hair drooping over his left eye.
"Sir," he nodded formally at doctor Henderson. He shocked Sally by nodding at her as well.
Henderson leaned back, facing the young doctor who looked like the younger version of him. "Well, what is it that you'd like to say?"
"Batch three, they have finally regained their sight," he stated, spine rigid and eyes distant before immediately adding, "sir."
As if a band snapped in her head, a realization came to her, or perhaps, a realization God told her in that very moment. The reason why the guards could not chase them down fast enough...was not because they were simply non-athletic guards, the Lord has blinded them.
'Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.' She remembered it now, the Lord told her, His voice clear in her head.
So she resisted him, the doubts, the questions, the temptations.
'I need to get out of here.'
Again, there it was, the same seven words rotating at the back of her head.
Henderson's fist dropped on the mahogany desk, creating a loud noise, it shook the letter opener and fell to the ground with a clang. He glanced at the shaking young man at the doorway, jaw clenched. "Say again?"
Sally's attention snapped back to the two men discussing in front of her. Only now, there were three. A short but composed woman stood beside the boy, looking past Henderson and in a practiced voice, she said, "an intruder has entered the gates sir."
"Not that, the other one," Henderson grumbled, rolling his eyes in an annoyed manner.
"I'm afraid we forgot the third party in this conversation sir," her eyes narrowed at Sally, who was clearly listening in on their conversation before looking back at Henderson and clearing her throat. "With all due respect, sir."
"Let's take this outside," he stated firmly, glaring at them before he headed out the door followed by the two.
Sally waited. And contemplated. Thought. How will she get out of here? She has nothing, no one. The others might be coming for her, but it might be too late before they can even breach the entrance of the building.
That's right, Sally thought. All she have to do now is lean unto God. 'The same God who hasn't set you free even until now?' Her eyebrows furrowed, clearly, the enemy is trying her faith.
But she wouldn't cower, no. Instead, she bowed her head and closed her eyes tightly.
Apparently, all the other things that had happened was a sick show, an evil illusion, the apprentice's magic.
So she prayed, she prayed for the banishment of her doubts, she prayed for her and the others' safety. But most importantly, she prayed for a way out of there, she prayed for help.
Her heart filled up with the Holy Spirit, uttering prayers--no, not prayers, she wasn't talking in any form of language known to man. She was praying in tongues, afire for the Lord. But she couldn't bother with the otherwise weird occurrence, somehow, she knew she was speaking to the Lord. And He's listening.
Sally didn't know how no one was yet to open her door after she had prayed, not a single distraction was made until her prayer's very last word. Her eyes glossed with tears, desperate tears, tears of admiration and desperation.
She shakily stood up from the chair. Heart singing, pushing her mouth to sing with it. Songs of praise. But she couldn't right now, she needed to get out of there.
A sharp clang echoed throughout the room. Her attention snapped to the sharp letter opener that had fallen on the floor. The sliver of an idea popped up in her mind.
Before she could retrieve the letter opener however, the metal door burst wide open. Doctor Henderson stood in the way, the harsh lighting from the hallway contrasted with the room's dim ones, making him a silhouette of bright white light. But he didn't look anything like an angel of light. At that moment, Sally realized that the monster is back, it has never left.
"Your silly little friend comes to play," he cooed, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him before chuckling. "As if she'd have the chance to come out alive, let alone save you."
Sally's eyes widened in shock. 'Layana's here. She's going to save me. She didn't forget me.' But Henderson's right, she might be in grave danger if she even tried to breach the gate. She's setting herself up for a death trap!
"In no time, you'd both be pleading for mercy at my feet," he grinned devilishly, advancing towards Sally. She looked around, trying to form a plan. Any kind of plan. Her eyes caught the glinting letter opener on the ground. Swallowing, Sally turned her eyes away, she had to have a plan, no matter how risky. She needed to send Layana a message. A message only best friends can solve.
"Enough prep talk," Henderson sneered. "Let's get this over with."
But before he could do anything, Sally rolled away, quickly grabbing the letter opener on the floor. Crouched, sharp letter opener pointed at Henderson, she formulated her plan.
Henderson's grin never ceased, creating a huge crease in her forehead. 'This wouldn't work out well,' she thought.
"You think you can outsmart me? Well, here's your answer Sally..." He grinned, "you can't."
"Oh, but I know someone who can," she nodded before adding with a grin. "And will."
