Chapter Four

Rayne Pov

We are sitting around the table talking and enjoying dinner. Uncle Frank is talking to Lucas's father about a business deal.

I turn to Dante and help him grab his cup of milk. We are having chicken parmesan with Caesar salad on the side. Everyone is drinking red wine. Well, I'm drinking some Mountain Dew.

"Rayne, how was job searching?" Aunt Tina asks, taking a drink of her red wine.

"Why does she need to look for a job when she has a trust fund?" Stefan asks.

"Well, if you must know, Mr. Morello, I'm job searching because I don't plan on touching the money my parents left me. I plan to give it to Dante, and if I have more kids, I will split it between them for college. And the money I make from working will be used for finding my son and me a house, plus whatever else he needs. Any money left from each paycheck will be put in with the money my parents left me." I respond, taking a drink of my soda.

"Luck, why did you take my eyes?" Dante asks, and I spit my soda out and start coughing.

"Well, buddy, that's because..." Lucas starts, but I slam my hands on the table to stop him from speaking.

"Outside now," I say through my clenched teeth, and I get up and stomp outside, slamming the door shut.

"I don't understand what the problem is with him knowing who I am, Rayne," Lucas says as he follows me off the porch.

"Well, you see, I understand it's not your fault you didn't know about him. I understand you had to leave to go home to Italy. But I'm doing this to protect Dante. I don't want him to get hurt or attached. You will be leaving in a couple of weeks. And I will be back to raising my son on my own, just as I have been for the past three years." I say.

I look away, crossing my arms, not wanting to look at him. I don't want him to see that I'm hanging on by a thread with my emotions. It's been hard raising Dante and juggling school and work to make sure Dante has what he needs.

"Rayne I'm not leaving; I'm staying here in West Virginia, but my house is in Charleston, so I will be an hour away. I bought it today after I found out about Dante, which, by the way, I found out from Caleb. Which is not a good way to find out you have a kid. Caleb is my best friend, and now he wants to kill me, by the way." He says.

"Lucas, I'm not ready to tell him about you. You know nothing about Dante. Like his birthday, his favorite color, or his allergies, etc." I say as we walk back into the house.

"Ok, so tell me about him," Lucas says as the window explodes behind me. Before I even have a chance to react, he pushes me to the ground and covers my body.

"Dante!" I scream, trying to get up to get to my baby, who is under the dining room table. Lucas gets up without a moment's hesitation and runs outside with a gun in his hand that somehow, miraculously, he pulls out of nowhere.

I crawl over to the table as the vase explodes from being shot at. "Get the women to the safe room now, Korey." Uncle Frank yells.

Korey pulls a gun out from under his jacket and stands up. He covers us with a few other men who rush in as I see Lucas run back in and whisper something to his father and my uncle. They all rush outside. I grab Dante and follow Korey. We get to the hallway, and Korey shoves us into this small room and locks it behind us.

"What in the hell is going on, Aunt Tina?" I ask while my voice shakes in fear, and Dante is crying

"Sweetie I will have your uncle explain everything once we are safe. Just please sit down and calm Dante down." She says, I put Dante in Mel's arms and stood up.

"No, I will not calm down. Someone was just shooting the house up, and my son was in harm's way. What the fuck are you guys keeping from me?" I yelled at her.

As I was yelling, I never noticed the door open, and Caleb stepped into the room.

"Rayne, calm down. You guys can come out; it's safe now." Caleb says. I grabbed Dante from Melaine and stormed upstairs to Dante's room. I slam the door and go to the closet, grab a bag, and start packing his clothes.

As I am packing his clothes, I hear the door open, and then Dante speaks. "Hi, Lucky," he says, trying to say Lukey.

"Hey, buddy, are you okay?" Lucas says. I turn to see them, and Lucas is down on his knees, hugging Dante with a look of relief across his face.

I turn back to finish packing. After a few minutes of putting clothes in the bag, I feel Lucas's arms wrap around my waist.

"Amor, what are you doing?" Lucas asks me. I shove his hands off me, take the bag to my room, and start packing my clothes up.

"Rayne, what are you doing packing?" Lucas questions me; his features are heavy with concern.

"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm taking my son and going back to Michigan. I'm not staying here; people are shooting up my aunt and uncle's house. 'Everyone is hiding stuff from me, and I refuse to put my son's life at risk, and that is what will happen if I stay here." I say this as I finish packing.

I'm so scared; it feels like my heart is in my throat. I started to feel nauseous as I put the bag down and ran to my bathroom. I lift the lid to the toilet and fall to my knees. My throat starts to burn as the acid starts working its way up my throat. Lucas comes up behind me, holds my hair back, and rubs my back as I finish emptying my stomach in the toilet. I wait a few minutes before I flush the toilet and stand up.

I walk over to the sink and grab my toothbrush and mouthwash. I brush my teeth and rinse my mouth out, then wash my face and hands. I turn to Lucas and see that he is now leaning against the door frame of the bathroom.

"Lucas I'm sorry, but I can't stay here. Uncle Frank and Aunt Tina are hiding something. I have a feeling all of you are hiding something from me." I said, looking at him.

"Rayne, come to the office. Dad wants to talk to you." I hear Korey say it from the other side of my bedroom door. I look at Lucas one more time before I walk past him and head to the office.

I look in on Dante and see he is playing with his toys on his bed with Jasmine as Caleb walks out of the room. I follow him to the office with Lucas behind me.

"Rayne, how are you? I'm so sorry about what just happened." Uncle Frank starts to say, but I stop him by raising my hand.

"Uncle Frank I'm going back to Michigan. I'm sorry, but I've had a feeling since I've been here that you guys are hiding something with all these guards, and now that people are shooting your house, I cannot and will not have my son at risk." I say as I sit down across from him.

Stefan and Lucas walk in as I am telling Uncle Frank that I'm leaving, and the look on Stefan's face shows he is pissed.

"You are not leaving. I'm sorry, Rayne, but I will stop you from taking my grandson away from Lucas." Stefan says.

This makes my blood boil. How dare he tell me what I can and cannot do with my child?

I turn to Stefan and get in his face.

"You will not tell me what I can and cannot do with my child. Your son will not tell me what to do either. His name is not on the birth certificate, so legally, you all have no say. I have been raising my child on my own, and I know what is best. And so, help me, God; if any of you try to stop me, I will gut you like a fish and leave you with your insides on the outside." I growled at all of them, my eyes flashing dangerously.

"Rayne, dear, please rethink this. What if we tell you what is going on?" Aunt Tina questions.

I look at both of them before I turn to look at Lucas, and he shakes his head. I sigh while sitting down and wave for them to tell me what is going on.

Uncle Frank takes a deep breath and then releases it before he speaks. "Sister, I'm so sorry," I hear him whisper as he looks up at the ceiling.

"Rayne, I am the leader of the Bonanno Crime family from the Italian-American Mafia, and Stefan is the head of the Morello Crime family in Italy. In other words, he is one of the heads of the Italian mafia." Uncle Frank says.

I looked at them dumbfounded at first and then burst out laughing. "Seriously, you're telling me that you are the American Mafia and they are the Italian Mafia," I say, pointing to Lucas and Stefan. I was laughing so hard that my stomach started to hurt, and tears were starting to leak from my eyes.

I stopped laughing once I noticed that they were not laughing and that they seemed serious. I jump up from my seat and look at everyone, and that's when it dawns on me that they aren't lying. It explains the guards and guns all over the safe room.

I look at Korey, and he looks at me, shaking his head and confirming everything. "I can't; I'm sorry," I say, and I rush out of the room. As I'm heading to my son's room, tears start falling down my face. I grab Dante, rush into my room, and grab our bags. I leave my room, head down the stairs, and head to the door to the garage.

I grab random keys and press the unlock button, and I see I grabbed Aunt Tina's keys to her SUV. I open the back seat door and see that Dante's car seat is still there, so I put him in it. Buckling him up, I rush to the driver's door, throw the bags in the passenger seat, climb in, and start the vehicle.

I back out of the garage and head towards the gate. The gate opens, and I leave, not knowing where I'm going, but I just drive. I have been driving for a couple of hours, and I have no idea where I'm going. I shut my phone off about an hour ago because I got tired of them calling. Tina called about twenty times, and Melaine called a few dozen times also. I pulled over twice to let myself cry and to fill up at a gas station I came across, and I also pulled out a couple hundred off my ATM card. If they are in the Maifa, like they say, I know they will be able to track me, and I don't want that. I just want to be left alone.

I came across a cheap motel, so I decided to pull off here and get some sleep. I grab Dante and the bags and check in for a room.

After I got us to the room, I laid Dante down on the bed and turned my phone back on. I wrote down Korey and Mel's numbers and then shut my phone off again before I took the SIM card out and flushed it. I will get a new phone in a couple of days after I get to where I'm going.
