Chapter Seventeen
Hestia didn't even flinch at the loud explosion from behind them. She stopped walking when everyone else did, but didn't look towards the footsteps that moved toward them. However, when she heard sighs of relief, she glanced up and was greeted with the sight of her favorite mandalorian.
She blinked, and watched as IG-11 transferred the weight of the heavy bounty hunter over to Cara. Hestia wanted to go over and talk to him, but she knew now was not the time. As the other three discussed plans, they continued walking. Hestia didn't listen to them, merely just following behind.
She thought she would be happier to see Din alive, but she just felt numb. Nothing felt right anymore. After a moment, they paused and Din stood by himself.
"The bafta infusion is working", IG-11 said. Hestia gave a soft smile, but other than that, there was no sign of any emotion from her.
As they continued moving through the tunnels, Din walked with more confidence. Hestia realized he was beginning to recognize this part of a sewer. They turned a corner and were greeted by a sight Hestia knew would break Din's heart.
A pile of mandalorian armor sat in the center of the hallway. Din walked forward and picked up a helmet, letting out a shuddering breath. Hestia reached out to comfort him, but then paused as he turned toward Karga.
"Did you do this?" he asked, his voice holding a dangerous tone.
"No", Karga started to defend but Din cut him off. He forced the man against the wall.
"Did you do this?" he thundered. Karga shook his head, and again tried to defend himself, but Din didn't give him a chance to.
"It was not his fault", a new voice spoke. Hestia looked over to see a mandalorian with gold armor, fur lining parts of it.
The mandalorian led them to another room, one that reminded Hestia of a blacksmith. She watched as the mandalorian and Din talked. She glanced at the necklace in her hand, studying it. It reminded of something, but she didn't know what.
"Its species can move things with its mind", Din explained. The mandalorian responded as she moved about the room, working on melting down the metal from the armor.
"I know of such things", she said. "The songs of eons past tell of battles between Mandalore the Great and an order of sorcerers called Jedi that fought with such powers."
"It is an enemy?" Din asked. Hestia wanted to smack him.
"No", the mandalorian said. "Its kind were enemies, but this individual is not. Nor is the one who wields the lightsaber."
"What is it?" Din asked. The mandalorian spoke as she worked with the metal.
"It is a foundling", she said. "By creed, it is in your care."
The child gurgled as the female mandalorian looked over at him. Hestia smiled softly.
"You must reunite it with its own kind", the mandalorian stated. Hestia's eyes widened.
"You want me to return it to a race of enemy sorcerers?" Din asked.
"This is the way", the mandalorian said. Din repeated the phrase, and the mandalorian turned to him.
The sound of footsteps nearby cause them all to tense.
"We need to go", Cara spoke, glancing at the doorway.
"You guys go. I need to help her, and heal", Din said. Hestia glared at him, and opened her mouth to speak, but someone else beat her to it.
"IG-11, please stand guard", the mandalorian said. With very few words, the droid dropped the child into Cara's arms who almost immediately protested.
"You have a foundling in your care. By creed, until it is of age, or reunited with its own kind, you are as its father."
Hestia's eyes widened before she smirked slightly. So now Din really was a father.
"You have earned your signet. You are now a clan of two", the mandalorian said as she welded something onto Din's pauldron. A couple gunshots sounded outside and IG-11 came back inside.
"You are protected."
"That was a scouting party. More will be coming. Restock your ammunitions." That was all that needed to be said for everyone but Hestia to grab what they thought they would need.
"IG-11, carry this for Din Djarin until he is well enough to wear it", the mandalorian said, holding a jet pack. Hestia's eyes widened and she smirked when she remembered Din's words at the start of their journey together.
Din tried one last time to get the mandalorian to come with them. But she refused. Hestia gently placed a hand on Din's shoulder, and smiled at him. He nodded once before turning back to the mandalorian.
"This is the way", the female mandalorian said. Once again, Din repeated the phrase before turning leading the group outside. They followed the mandalorian's directions to the lava river, where they found a boat melted to the walkway. Hestia groaned, before using her lightsaber to cut through the metal. As they all quickly clambered into the boat, IG-11 spoke, almost humorously.
"Be careful. It's molten lava", he said. Hestia snorted as they started floating down river. Her nose crinkled as the stink finally hit her nose.
A sudden beeping noise made her turn around, lightsaber at the ready. She relaxed when she realized it was only the ferry droid. It beeped again and she smiled.
"Down river please, to the lava flats", she asked politely. It beeped in acknowledgement and she turned back to the group, who were all staring at her.
"What?" she asked.
"You speak droid?" Cara asked. Hestia nodded.
"My sister owns a droid. He's one of the most annoying ones out there because he's got quite the personality, but he's a true friend", Hestia said with a smile. "I can't wait to see him when this is all over."
Din spoke, his voice quiet. "So you're still planning on going back to Lothal?"
Hestia looked over at him, a sad look in her eyes. "Yeah. I need a break from all this craziness. No matter where we go, there's always an adventure. And I don't think I'd be able to handle that in this state of mind."
Din was quiet, as was the rest of the crew. No one spoke until the end of the tunnel was seen.
"We're almost there!" Karga shouted. Din looked toward the tunnel, and Hestia instantly knew something was wrong.
"No, we're not. There's a stormtroopers lining the mouth of the cave. We'll be dead before we can take even one out."
As they all try to figure out ways to survive past the stormtroopers, Hestia meditates. She reaches out with the force, and listens for something, anything to help them. She hears nothing, except IG-11's voice saying "Manufacturers protocol dictates that I cannot be capture. I must self destruct."
She opened her eyes in a flash, and looked to IG-11.
"IG", she said quietly. "You know how to save us."
The droid looked at her, before giving a single word. "Yes."
As the other members of the crew bickered, IG-11 cut in and told them what has to happen. They all immediately protested, but IG shut down all their arguments.
"Sadly, there is no scenario where I survive, in which the child is saved", he explained. Din started to weakly protest as IG placed the child in Hestia's arms. She held him gently as she watched the conversation.
"But you'll be destroyed", he said sadly.
"But you will live, and I will have served my purpose", the droid stated, standing up.
"No. We need you", Din said. Hestia could hear how hard it was for him to keep his voice from cracking.
"There is nothing to be sad about", IG-11 said. "I have never been alive."
"I'm not sad", Din weakly defended.
"I'm a nurse droid. I have analyzed your voice", IG-11 said before climbing out of the boat and walking towards the sunlight that streamed through the mouth of the cave.
Hestia watched as an explosion rang outward, and she smiled softly. "Thank you, IG", she whispered as they passed through the tunnel. All the stormtroopers were dead or knocked out.
Unfortunately, they forgot to count for one person.
Moff Gideon.
A tie fighter flew over them, firing at them. He missed, but they knew it wouldn't last long. Hestia froze when she saw Din put the jetpack on his back.
"Din, wait! She cried. "You don't even know how to use that thing!"
Din glanced at her, and nodded once before leaping up. Hestia watched as he tumbled through the air, trying to make his way to the tie fighter. They went out of sight for a moment, which gave the group time to leave the boat and move onto the rock. Soon Hestia saw the tie fighter again, with Din hanging onto one of wings.
She let out a small yelp when a small explosion went off somewhere behind the tie fighter. She watched as Din let go of the tie fighter, making his way back toward the group, landing on the rock beside them.
Hestia looked at the trail of smoke that led to where the tie fighter had crashed and she wanted to see if Gideon had survived, but she had more pressing matters.
As the others spoke, she looked toward Din. The child gurgled and she looked down at him to see his little arms stretched out toward the mandalorian. She smiled softly, and set him down, letting him waddle over to Din. The beskar clad individual looked over at Hestia but picked the kid up regardless.
He held onto the kid and Hestia turned to Cara. The woman walked a short distance away, and looked back toward the group.
"He's gonna miss you, you know", Cara said. "They both are."
Hestia smiled sadly. "I know. But I need to do this."
Cara nodded. "Well, if you ever need some advice or some time away from your family, I'll be here in Nevarro, helping clean up."
Hestia smiled. "I'll come visit, I promise."
Cara nodded, and the two walked back over to the men. Hestia shook hands with Karga.
"You aren't so bad any more. But first things first", she said. "The bounty is off my head, yes? I don't need or want to put my sister and my nephew in danger."
Karga nodded. "You don't need to worry about bounty hunters any more, Hestia. Neither does the kid."
Hestia nodded and turned toward Din, who was watching her.
"Shall we get going?" she asked. He nodded and held out an arm for her. She frowned.
"Aren't we walking?" she asked. He shook his head.
"Flying will be faster", he said. Hestia hesitated, but agreed nonetheless. He wrapped an arm around her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. They took off toward the ship and Hestia squealed with fright. Her eyes squeezed shut as the wind whipped past her face.
When they landed, Hestia stumbled away from Din, breathing heavily.
"I thought you liked flying?" he teased. Hestia shot a glare at him.
"Yeah, when I know for a fact that I'm not going to fall. Your jet pack flying is crazy and I don't like it when the only thing solid is someone else's body."
Din chuckled before leading the way onto the ship. Hestia was about to follow, but paused when she noticed the blurrg only about a hundred feet away. She spotted a second body near it.
"Hestia, are you coming?" Din called. She looked into the ship, before looking back at the body.
"Yeah, give me a few moments", she called back as she approached the body. It was Kuiil. She sighed and tilted her head down as she silently grieved for the old man. She didn't know him very well, but he was kind. She started collecting rocks and placed them around his body. Din eventually joined her and they slowly but surely built up a grave. Din placed the ugnaughts helmet on top, and they stood side by side as they looked at the grave.
"He seemed like he was a good person", Hestia murmured quietly. Din didn't say anything, instead turning back to the ship. The twi'lek sighed and followed him. Soon, they were up in the stars again, and it was deathly quiet. Hestia was looking out the window when Din suddenly spoke.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay?" he asked quietly. Hestia looked over at him, and saw him looking at her.
"I am", she replied just as quiet. They stared at each other for what seemed a lifetime before Hestia finally looked away. The silence overtook them again as they made the jump into hyperspace.
"What was she like?" Din asked. Hestia glanced over at him, confused.
"Who?"
"Your daughter, Layla", he clarified. Hestia's eyes closed as he said her name. She sighed softly as she pulled up memories of her long lost daughter.
"She was... kind. Almost everybody loved her. Everyone treated her with the respect she deserved", Hestia whispered.
"What did she look like?" Din asked. Hestia forced a smile as she spoke bitterly.
"I was hoping you wouldn't ask that", she muttered. "Imagine a smaller me, but purple."
Din was quiet. "You aren't saying that..."
Hestia chuckled darkly. "I am. Qin was the father."
Din didn't say anything, instead just turning away. Hestia opened her mouth, but she knew nothing she would say would get him to talk to her. So she just let it be, looking out the window as they made their way to Lothal.
