Chapter Nine

Hestia groaned as she woke up, her cheek sore from resting against something hard. She lifted her head to discover that she was leaning against Mando's shoulder. Her face flushed and she turned away from him, looking towards Toro instead, who was starting get up. She watched as he made his way over to the duo.

"Suns are down. Time to ride, Mando", Toro said. When Mando doesn't reply, she looks over at him again. She pokes his helmet, and he doesn't respond. She frowns, before a devious grin appears on her face. She goes to poke his side, but a hand grab onto her wrist before she can get very far. She pouts when she realizes it was Mando's hand.

"So you were awake", she said, still pouting. Mando merely chuckled, before releasing her wrist so he could stand. She followed suit, and the trio stared around across the desert towards the ridge they knew Fennec Shand would be at.

"So, what's the plan?" Toro asked. Hestia looked over at Mando, who was pulling something out of his bag.

"Get on your bike", Mando said as he tossed him a flash charge.

"But she'll snipe us right off the bikes", Toro protested. Hestia couldn't help but agree with him, but she knew Mando always had a plan.

"It's a flash charge. We alternate shots. It blind any scope temporarily. Combine that with our speed and we got a chance."

Hestia nodded in approval. She and Mando got on one bike while Toro got on the other. "Get ready", Mando said. They both took off, and Hestia closed her eyes to keep sand from getting into them once again. She could hear the flash charges going off, as well as the blaster bolts that were randomly aimed, in hopes of hitting something.

Hestia briefly opened her eyes to see that Toro had misfired, and that instead of going into the air, it went across the ground. In the next few seconds, everything became a blur as the world became a spinning mess as she was knocked from the speeder, her grip on Mando failing. She flew through the air, and thudded against the sand, rolling to a stop. She groaned as she got up, and barely saw Mando get shot in his chest plate. She yelled his name, and ran towards him, letting out a breath of relief when he got up. She hurried with him to the ridge, where they found Toro stuck in a chokehold. Hestia couldn't help but snicker.

"Nice distraction" Mando said, causing Fennec to let go of him, and surrender. "Why don't you go find your blaster?"

"A mandalorian", Shand spoke, her voice soft, but dangerous. "It's been a long time since I've seen one of your kind. Ever been to Nevarro. I hear things didn't go so well, but it looks like you got off easy."

Hestia saw Mando tense and moved closer to him, gently grabbing his hand and giving it a squeeze. This brought Shand's attention to her and Hestia instinctively went to grab her lightsaber.

"A Jedi. I haven't seen many of those in years. The last time I heard of one was during the Rebellion. There were a few helping out. I think one of them died on Lothal."

Hestia froze at the sound of the planet she knew her sister was on. She only knew of two Jedi on Lothal. Kanan and Ezra. Her breath hitched in her throat as she thought of her Jedi Master and her fellow padawan learner. She prayed that neither of them were dead.

As Toro came back from retrieving his blaster, he spoke loudly. Mando gently squeezed Hestia's hand in the distraction, and she looked at him, her eyes shining in the moonlight. He tossed a pair of cuffs at Shand, and glared at her through the helmet.

"Cuff yourself", she did as he said and the led her back down the ridge to where the only remaining speeder was.

"Uh oh, looks like two of us are going to have to walk", Shand says.

Mando turned toward Toro. "I need you to go find that dewback we saw."

"And leave you here with my bounty and my ride?" Toro asked. "Yeah, I don't think so."

Hestia sighed. "I'll go. I need to clear my mind anyway. A walk will do me some good."

She started walking away and she heard Mando give some instructions to Toro before jogging to catch up with her.

"I'm coming with you", he stated. Hestia shrugged.

"Okay, but don't expect me to talk much."

Mando nodded and they walked side by side. Hestia got lost in thought as she thought about what Fennec had told her. She couldn't help but worry about the friends she had made in her short time with the ghost crew.

She remembered the pranks she would pull with Ezra. She remembered piloting with her sister, just talking about nothing. She remembered training with Kanan. Him teaching her what little he remembered learning from the Jedi Order. He had only been a few years older than she had when Order 66 happened. He's the one who taught her how to cope with her pain. She remembered Zeb, and all the playful arguments they got into. She remembered Chopper, the droid that very much had a personality. She remembered Sabine, who she had fun painting with.

"I just realized", Hestia spoke softly. "You're not the first mandalorian I've ever met."

Mando turned to look at her. She could feel his curiosity fall off him in waves.

"Her name was Sabine. She was born on Mandalore. She wasn't like you. She took off her helmet. But she was a true mandalorian, both heart and soul. Much like you are", Hestia whispered.

Mando was quiet. "There are other mandalorians who take off their helmets?"

Hestia nodded. "From what I learned from Sabine, yes. They're not as secretive as you've been led to believe, I think. But I know that your way means a lot to you."

Mando nodded, his eyes scanning over the terrain as he thought about the new information he'd been given. He was curious about this Sabine that Hestia told him about.

"What was Sabine like?" he asked. Hestia laughed as she thought about her old friend.

"She was spunky. Had a thing for art. Her room on the ship was filled with spray paint art that she did herself. Her armor was spray painted with many colors and she changed it up every so often. She has figured out a way to make her explosions colorful. It was very cool to be honest."

Mando hummed softly. Hestia looked towards him, a cheeky smile spread across her face. "You know, I bet you'd be able to meet her when we go to Lothal. I doubt she's left. The crew was like family when I like. I'm sure it still is."

Mando nodded. "There's the dewback." He pointed up ahead. Hestia glanced and sure enough, there it was. As they approached, the twi'lek glanced over at the mandalorian.

"Thanks for listening to me ramble about my old crewmate. I haven't talked to anyone about any of them since I left", Hestia mumbled. Mando smiled softly.

"Of course, Hestia", he said. "I'd listen to you ramble any day."

Hestia grinned at him. "Really?"

Mando chuckled. "Really. Now... do you want help getting on the dewback, or can you do it yourself."

Hestia looked at the tall animal, before smirking at Mando. I can get up myself. I could even help you up if I really wanted."

Mando glanced at her. "I doubt that."

"Is that a challenge", she asked, her smirk growing bigger. Mando smirked back, though she couldn't see it.

"Maybe it is."

Hestia chuckled, before closing her eyes and reaching out with the force. She used it to lift him and place him on the dewback. It took some effort since she wasn't used to doing that, but she was able to.

"Told you I could do it", she said. Mando just stared down at her. She leaped up, using the force to help her. And landed on the dewbacks back. She settled behind Mando, who was looking behind him at her. She laughed.

"What?" she asked.

"I honestly didn't realize that the force was powerful enough to lift me", he said quietly. Hestia let out a quiet laugh.

"The force is strong enough to lift anything. It is the will of the force wielders mind that limits how big a thing they can lift."

Mando started guiding the dewback toward where they left Toro and Shand. Hestia leaned against him, resting her head against his back, arms wrapped around his waist.

"Hey, Mando?" she called, deciding to ask the question she had been pondering for the past few days. "Do you think I'll ever be able to see your face?"

Mando's breath hitched in his throat. Hestia noticed the unnatural pause before he answered, and immediately backpedaled. "Sorry. Forget I asked that."

Mando took a few moments to find his voice. "I-I hope that you'll be able to see my face one day."

Hestia blinked at the stutter in his voice, but his words made her heart soar. She smiled and tightened her grip every slightly around him. Mando noticed this and couldn't help smiling himself.

Not not after the suns had risen, they arrived at the place where they left Shand and Toro, only to discover that Toro was gone and Shand was left for dead. Hestia groaned.

"Well, this is not going as planned", she muttered.

"When do things ever go as planned?" Mando asked drily. Hestia bit back at laugh at that.

"True, true."

The duo slowly made their way back to the city of Mos Eisley, occasionally talking, but for the most part remaining silent. They arrived back at the hangar by the time the suns had set once more. They walked into the hangar, cautiously moving about.

"Bout time, Mando", Toro called from inside their ship. Hestia tensed when she saw Peli held at gunpoint in front of him, and the child in his arms. She went to grab her lightsaber, but Toro caught the movement.

"Don't touch that lightsaber, or else I'll shoot this mechanic here", he threatened. Hestia growled, feeling her anger seep inside her. In an instant, she had a hand out, and was using the force to choke him. He dropped the gun and almost dropped the child, but Peli had quick reflexes and caught him.

As soon as Peli moved to safety, Hestia released him from her grasp, and he stumbled forward, gasping for breath. Hestia took a deep breath and let her anger flow away before turning to look at Mando, who was watching her.

She looked back at Toro to discover him grabbing hold of his blaster and aiming towards both Peli and the child. Before he could even touch the trigger, Mando shot him and he fell off the side of the landing ramp.

"Is he dead?" Peli called. Hestia didn't hesitate to walk over to the woman and take the child from her, hugging him tightly.

"I am never letting you out of my sights again", she whispered. Peli walked over to the mandalorian.

"So I take it you didn't get paid?" she asked. Mando poured several credits into her hand.

"That cover me?" he asked. Peli stared at the credits before nodding.

"Yeah, yeah, that covers you."

Without a word, Mando walked back up into the ship. Hestia followed him, but not before saying goodbye to Peli. She closed the hatch and then hurried over to the ladder into the cockpit, struggling to climb it with one hand occupied. She saw Mando at the controls, and smiled. Placing the small child into his seat, she moved over to where Mando was and stood behind him.

"So... where to now?" she asked. Mando glanced back at her.

"I was thinking we could stop by Lothal."

Hestia's eyes opened wide, and a large grin appears on her face.

"Really?"

Mando chuckled, his heart leaping at the sound of the excitement in her voice. "Really."

"Thank you so much, Mando", she said as she pulled him into a hug.

Without a moment's hesitation, Mando spoke a single word.

"Din."
