Chapter Four
Flashes. That's all she caught. Flashes of what was going to happen. She could hear lots of yelling. Explosions were happening left and right. She caught a glimpse of the mandalorian running forward, yelling her name. She saw Hera holding a green haired child to her chest, staring around fearfully.
Hestia sat up in the speeder, breathing heavily. Sunlight trickled through the trees, but she didn't feel it's warmth. She felt cold instead. She was afraid. She could hear one of the Jedi master's that had trained voice a warning pound through her head. One she had heard countless times before
"Don't let fear control you, young one. You will lose yourself if you do."
Hestia took deep breaths and closed her eyes, trying to let go of her fear. She jumped when she felt a small hand on her own, and she opened her eyes to see the child staring up at her. She smiled and hugged him to her chest.
"Thanks, kid. You're the best", she murmured. He giggled, but got quickly distracted by the sounds of cheers throughout the village. She could hear the excitement in everyone's voices as they shouted.
"They're here!" several people shouted. A woman approached Cara, and the rebellion trooper followed her. Another woman approached Hestia and Mando.
"Follow me. I'll show you where you can stay", she said quietly. They followed her to a large hut, where another woman was opening the blinds on a window.
They paused at the door way, and the woman caught side of them.
"Come in", she said with a smile. "I'm sorry that all we had was the barn." Hestia shrugged, and placed the child down in a crib in the center of the room. She focused on him, and not the conversation that was happening in the room. She tilted her head at him, as he reached for her. She laughed quietly.
"Do you want me or one of my lekku?" she asked quietly, as to not disturb the conversation. She only tuned back into the conversation, when she heard sudden movement from the mandalorian, and a small yelp from outside. She turned to look and saw a young girl standing by the door, and Mando pointing a gun at her. She sighed and walked over to him, pushing the gun down.
"It's just a kid, Mando. Calm down. She won't hurt the kid."
He holstered his gun, and the young girl walked in, hiding behind the older woman. "This is my daughter, Winta", the woman said. Hestia smiled and crouched in front of Winta.
"Hi, Winta. I'm Hestia." Winta nervously smiled at the twi'lek.
"What are you?" the young girl whispered. "I've never seen anyone like you."
Hestia smiled softly. "I'm a twi'lek."
"You're very pretty", Winta said, a bigger smile adorning her face. Hestia was taken aback. She didn't get compliments very often, and she wasn't even dressed all that well. She had blood stains on her pants, and there was a hole in it too.
"Thank you", Hestia said after a moment, before rising back to her whole height, and looking at the woman.
"I don't think I caught you name", she said kindly.
"I'm Omera", the woman replied. Hestia smiled, before turning back to Mando who was quietly watching the exchange happening. Hestia smirks at him before looking back at Omera.
"This guy over here is Mando. At least that's what everyone calls him. I don't think he even has an actual name", Hestia teases.
"You don't know your own husband's name?" Omera tilted her head. Hestia's cheeks flushed as she throws her hands up into the air.
"Why does everyone on this blasted planet think that we're married?!" she cries out as she walks back over to the child, who was watching curiously.
Omera started stuttering out an apology. "Oh, I'm sorry. I just figured that since you were traveling together with a kid that you were together."
Hestia calmed herself, turning to face Omera with a tight smile. "It's okay. I get the feeling we'll be getting that a lot. But honestly, I'm really just hitching a ride until I can get back to my sister."
Omera nodded, before leading Winta out of the room. "We'll give you guys some space."
Hestia thanked her, before turning to Mando. "We really gotta figure out a way to make it not seem like we're together."
He doesn't say anything for a moment. "Your sister. Is that who you were asking Cara about back in the town? Hera?"
Hestia sighed. "Yeah. Hera's my sister. That's why it shocked me so much to find out she had a kid. I haven't seen her in a few years, so that would explain why I'm a bit out of the loop."
Mando stayed quiet again, not speaking until Omera came back with a tray of food. Winta followed close behind her. Omera placed the tray of food on a little shelf, while Winta looked toward Hestia.
"Can I feed him?" she asked. Hestia smiled, but looked over at Mando.
"It's up to him." The man in shiny armor looked over to the young village girl, and let out a quiet sigh.
"Sure." Winta excitedly moved towards the child, and gave him bits of food. She giggled as he ate it right from her hands. After feeding him for a bit, she turned to the mandalorian.
"Can I play with him?" With another sigh from Mando, he gave her an affirmative, and she grinned as Hestia pulled the child from the cradle, and allowed the young girl to take him out of the hut.
"I don't think-" Mando spoke as he watched them leave.
"They'll be fine", Omera said. Mando continued to protest, but she continued to assure him that they'd be fine. Hestia walked over to the duo.
"Don't worry, Mando. There's nothing out here, and I trust these people. Besides, I think all the kids are curious about him", she spoke, grabbing a piece of fruit, and biting into it. As the flavors burst in her mouth, her eyes widened, and she started scarfing down the rest of it.
"I haven't had this good of food in a while", she said, her mouth full as she stared at the piece of fruit. Omera chuckled.
"I'll leave you two to eat in peace, then", she said as she exited the barn. Hestia glanced toward Mando as she swallowed, and smiled softly.
"I'll leave too so you can eat", she said, trying to be considerate of his ways. As she walked toward the door, Mando caught her wrist. She looked back at him, and he hesitated.
"Stay", he whispered softly. "I enjoy your company." Hestia froze but nodded. He placed the tray of food on the ground before sitting next to it. She paused, unsure of what to do.
"Sit with your back to mine", he murmured. "And don't look behind you."
Hestia cautiously nodded, and sat behind him, worried that she wouldn't be able to stop herself from looking. She took a deep breath, and tried to calm her mind. She heard the hiss of Mando's helmet as he took it off, and she tensed.
"Relax", he said quietly. She blinked. He sounded so much different with the helmet off. She tilted her head, but her head did not turn to look behind her.
"It's kind of hard to relax, you know. I barely know you, and you seem to already trust me enough to take your helmet off, believing that I won't look", Hestia snapped, before taking a deep breath. "Sorry. I'm... Trust means a lot to me. I don't give it easily."
Mando was quiet for a moment. "Did you think you would look?"
Hestia sighed and looked up towards the ceiling. "No. Well... I was worried that I would be too tempted, still am actually. But I know what it means to you, and I respect that."
"Are you tempted to look?" he asked. Hestia took a moment to relish in the way his voice sounded softer, and less intimidating without the helmet on. She imagined he looked a lot less intimidating with off as well.
"Yes", the twi'lek replied honestly. "I like to know who I'm travelling with, so I can deem them worthy of my trust. It's hard to do that when I can't see someone's eyes. I can't... it's harder to pick up on emotion. On what you're feeling so I know what I should or shouldn't say." Hestia looked at the tray of fruit that rested beside them, one that neither one of them had touched. "You should eat. That's the reason why you took your helmet off in the first place."
She watched as he grabbed a piece of fruit, before turning her head away and looking back up to the ceiling. She sighed softly, as her mind wandered back to the place it always wandered to. Her sister. Was she safe? How old was her kid? She wondered how the rest of the ghost crew was doing. She hadn't seen much of them since she completed her training, thanks to Kanan. She remembered training along side Ezra, and competing. It helped both of them move along, though she knew none of the masters she had trained under would have approved of it.
"You're quiet", Mando commented, breaking into her train of thoughts. Hestia smiled sadly as she brought her knees closer to her chest and hugged them.
"My mind isn't", she replied softly. "A lot has happened these past few days, and it's a lot to take in."
Mando was quiet as he thought of something to say. "There has been one question on my mind", he admitted. "You made good use of that laser sword. What... what is it?"
Hestia frowned. "Have you never heard of the Jedi? I know they're not as popular as they are now, but surely you've heard stories of how they were in the Clone Wars and also during the Rebellion."
When Mando remained quiet, she sighed. "You've been living under a rock, apparently. Jedi are force wielders. They have a signature weapon called a lightsaber. That's what the laser sword is. It's my lightsaber."
She reached out with the force, and gently lifted a piece of fruit and let it float in front of Mando's face. She could feel his surprise as he grabbed it, staring at it curiously. "The kid used the same sort of power."
"When?" Hestia asked in surprise.
"On the planet where I found the kid, some Jawas stripped my ship of most of its parts. In order to get the parts back, the Jawas wanted a mudhorn egg. The mudhorn was getting the better of me, and I would've surely died if it weren't for him. He lifted the entire mudhorn off the ground, without touching it."
Hestia's eyes widened. "I knew he was strong in the force, but I didn't think he was that strong!"
"What is the force?" Mando asked, curiousity lacing his voice. Hestia smiled.
"I'll explain while you eat. You've been doing too much talking to be eating", she said. In Mando's silence, she smiled, and opened her mouth to speak when he spoke.
"Don't you need to eat too?" he asked. Hestia sighed.
"I can get some food later. Besides, that piece of fruit will abate my hunger for now. You have less chances to eat because you have less time where you're able to take off your helmet. Now. Let me explain the force."
As Hestia explained, Mando found himself hanging on every word she spoke, even if he didn't fully understand what the force was. There were times were he would forget to eat, only because of her melodious voice. He didn't understand what was happening to him, but as soon as he finished eating, he pulled his helmet back on, if only so he could see her face again. Even if it was through his visor.
When he stood, Hestia quickly finished her sentence, before asking a question. "Is your helmet back on?"
At his affirmative answer, she stood and turned to face him, trying to see through his visor, but knowing she wouldn't be able to. She let out a quiet sigh, before moving towards the door.
"I'm going to go check on the kid. Let me know if you want any help with anything."
"I will", he said, the modulator masking his true voice. Hestia paused at the door, turning to face Mando.
"I like your voice more without your helmet on", she says before quickly leaving. She could feel a heat rising up her neck and to her cheeks, as she realized what she said. She meant every word of it though.
