Chapter Eleven
Hera stared at the unlikely pair before her. "You've certainly done a lot together, haven't you?"
Hestia nodded, a small smile on her face as she glanced up at Din.
"We have. And I wouldn't have wanted to spend the last few months with anyone else", she said with a smile. Hera smirked as she picked up on the underlying meaning behind her sister's words.
"Hestia, can I have a word with you? In private", Hera said. Hestia looked over the green twi'lek and nodded, handing the small green child over to Din, who watched as the two left the room to another part of the ship.
Hestia waited for Hera to speak once they reached the cockpit. She sat in the copilot seat, smiling as she looked at the familiar controls she used to use.
"So... tell me... what's going on between you and that mandalorian", Hera teased. Hestia instantly blushed, looking away from her sister, and out the window.
"Nothing's going on... not yet anyway", Hestia mumbled. "I've been dropping little hints here and there, but I'm not sure he's picking up on them."
Hera sighed. "Maybe you should be more forward, then. Believe me, guys can be idiots."
"You mean like Kanan?" Hestia said, a small smile reaching her lips as she looked over at her sister. Hera let out a quiet chuckle.
"Yeah... like Kanan", she said, staring up at the sky through the window. Hestia frowned.
"Where is he, anyway? I thought he'd be here to help raise Jacen. He is the father, isn't he?"
Hera smiled sadly. "He is the father. And believe me, he would be here if he could, but... he died protecting the crew."
Hestia froze, her eyes widening as tears filled her eyes. "...Shand was telling the truth then..."
Hera looked over at her, but doesn't question the words. "I'll leave you to grieve in peace", she says softly, brushing a hand across her sister's arm before leaving the cockpit.
Hestia let out a choked sob as she curled up in her seat. Her Master, one of the first people she had finally began to trust after Order 66 was dead. Tears streamed down her face as she stared out at the sky.
"Kanan, you idiot. Why did you have to be such a hero?" she whispered before letting her head fall down on her knees. She heard a quiet knock on the back wall, and turned to see Din. She gave him a weak smile, to which he used as a signal to come closer.
"Hera told me what she told you. She also explained how close you were to him", he murmured. "Do you want to talk about him?"
At those words, Hestia shook her head, but slowly reached her arms out. Din didn't hesitate to pull her into his arms, hugging her tightly. She cried quietly, until finally her sobs slowly turned into sniffles.
"He was one of the few people I trusted after I lost my friends at the temple", Hestia whispered, still pressed up against Din's chest. "He taught me almost everything I know about the force, and how to use it. Same with my lightsaber."
Din was quiet for a moment before he spoke. "He sounds like he was great man."
Hestia chuckled. "One of the best. But no one could compare to you."
Din's breath hitched in his throat at what she said, and he pulled away slightly to press his forehead against hers. She smiled softly. "You know I didn't believe you when you said that it was an act of thanks, right?"
Din chuckled. "And you know that I know that your kiss on Tatooine wasn't you wishing me luck?"
Hestia blushed, before pulling away completely. "Fair enough."
There was a few moments of awkward silence as the two just stared at each other. Hestia toyed with asking a question, and eventually decided to ask it.
"Hey, Din", she said quietly. "I've got a question for you."
"What is it?" he asked. Hestia paused for a moment to find the right words.
"What was your greatest bounty?"
Din paused for a moment as he processed the question. A small smile appeared on his face as he answered.
"My greatest bounty was you", he murmured. Hestia's breath caught in her throat as she stared wide eyed at him. When she didn't say anything, Din started to backpedal.
"I mean, you and the kid. Turning you guys in was what allowed me to get this better armor", he mumbled, silently smacking himself. Still Hestia said nothing, and he watched her fearfully. He wasn't sure what she was thinking, and it scared him.
Finally she slowly reached her hands toward his helmet.
"May I?" she whispered as she gently placed her hands on either side of it.
This time his breath caught in his throat. He stared at her as his own hands wrapped around her wrists. She patiently waited.
"If you don't want me to, I won't", she whispered. Din hesitated.
"I do want you to", he whispered. "But... I don't think I'm ready for you to see my face just yet."
Hestia gave him a gentle smile as she pulled her hands away. "Okay."
Din stared at her, and slowly intertwined his fingers with her own. She smiled, and brought one of his hands up to her cheek and pressed it there, gently closing her eyes. They were quiet for a moment until a cooing from down at their feet made them move away from each other. Hestia looked down and smiled as she saw the child.
"How'd you get up here?" she asked him playfully. "Wasn't Hera watching over you?"
Hera poked her head up and saw the child in Hestia's arms. "I was, but I turned around for one second and he had disappeared. That bugger is fast."
Hestia laughed. "He is when he wants to be."
"Anyway, I've got some food downstairs you guys are hungry", Hera said. Hestia smiled but hesitated as she looked at Din.
"Do you want us to set you up with something in a different room?" she asked softly. Din looked down at her and gave her a soft smile, even though she couldn't see it.
"I'll be okay", he said. "I want to spend as much time with you and your family as possible."
A bigger smile crossed Hestia's face at those words, and she hugged him tightly. He returned the hug, a soft look in his eyes. His heart was fluttering from how close he had come to letting her take off his helmet.
"Come on, D- Mando!" Hestia said, pulling him out of the cockpit. Din felt a wave of sadness as he realized that he wouldn't be able to hear her say his name while they were with her family.
Soon, they were all gathered in the kitchen, talking and eating.
"So, let me get this straight... Agent Kallus, the guy we all hated from the Empire, was actually Fulcrum, and after the Empire fell, he went with Zeb to a planet filled with Lasats?" Hestia asked, staring at Hera. The green twi'lek laughed and nodded. Hestia let out a deep breath.
"Okay... so what happened with Ezra and Sabine? They ever get together?" Hera went quiet at the question.
"Ezra sacrificed himself to get rid of bigger enemy, someone named Thrawn. Sabine has reason to believe that he's still alive and she went looking for him with Ahsoka."
Hestia stared at her sister. "I missed all the fun stuff, didn't I?"
Hera laughed, but shook her head. "I think you've had plenty of fun just by being with Mando here."
Hestia grinned. "Yeah, that's probably true."
They were quiet for a moment, which allowed them all to hear a quiet beeping noise. One that Hestia and Din instantly recognized. They both stood up, and looked at Hera.
"Watch the kid", Din ordered. Hestia grabbed her lightsaber hilt as she walked towards the cargo bay. She peered over the edge and saw a bounty hunter. She silently leapt down behind him and activated her lightsaber in front of his neck.
"Looking for something?" she hissed. He said something to her in an alien language, something she didn't understand. She saw Din approaching, and let him go, knowing that Din would take care of the bounty hunter.
She nodded up to the kitchen, to which Din nodded and she hurried to it. She gave a sad smile to Hera.
"Unfortunately, we still have bounty hunters after us. So as much as this was nice, being able to spend time with you and being able to meet my nephew, we gotta go."
Hera nodded and stood, giving her sister a hug. Hestia returned the hug, and smiled softly.
"I'll return as soon as it's safe for me again", she whispered. Hera nodded and Hestia pulled away, grabbing the kid, and turning to Jacen.
"It was nice meeting you Jacen. Sorry we couldn't talk more", she said with a smile.
Jacen gave her a wide grin. "That's okay Aunt Tia! You'll be back soon enough!"
Hestia chuckled. "Are you sure of that?"
Jacen nodded excitedly, and Hestia laughed, ruffling his hair. "See you around, kid. Don't get into too much trouble. Though if you're anything like your father, trouble will find you."
Hera groaned. "Trust me, he's very much like his father."
Hestia laughed, giving Hera one last hug before she left. She hurried out of the ship, where she saw Din waiting by the unconscious body of the bounty hunter. She smiled and they hurried to their ship. It didn't take long before they had left Lothal and were in hyperspace.
Hestia only relaxed then. "Well, that was interesting."
Din chuckled. "You certainly have an interesting family."
"Just wait until you meet my father", she said. "He's the one you'll need to be careful around."
Din was quiet, but a small smile was on his face. He turned towards Hestia, who was sitting on her seat, holding the child. He gently took the child from her and placed him in his own seat before grabbing her hands and pulling her up to be standing with him. She blinked and tilted her head at him, confused.
He gently rested his forehead on her own, and she smiled. "Are you ever going to tell me what this is?" she whispered. Din was quiet for a moment.
"Probably not", he finally replied. Hestia laughed quietly, before yawning.
"I think I'm going to get some sleep. Let me know when you decide where we're going."
Din nodded, and she looked over at the child who was wide awake. She chuckled, and left the cockpit, going to the cot and laying down. Her eyes fluttered shut and soon, she was in her own mind.
