CHAPTER 2

"Why do you still keep Safiye Sultan here?" I asked mother as we sat in her chambers which were ordinary Sultana chambers and honestly Valide Sultan didn't deserve to live in apartments like those. I knew this might have not been the most important thing but in Harem there is widely known one thing – who sleeps in Valide Sultan's chambers is the woman who has harem in her hands.

"We will eliminate Safiye Sultan, of course, but what bothers me more is Mustafa. Ahmed son, you need to do something related to him," mother said quickly changing subject to Mustafa who was her biggest fear.

We all know if janissaries united and were lead by one powerful Sultana like grandmother Safiye is, they could dethrone Ahmed easily and put Mustafa on the throne in who's name Safiye would rule very easily.

"I don't think killing Mustafa is right decision Valide, he is so young and he doesn't deserve death," Ahmed said. I totally understood him as I felt the same.

"And what will you do live in fear that they would dethrone you whenever they want and threat you with Mustafa?" Valide said and in her eyes I only saw fear, fear which constantly followed in her life and she did nothing but worried for her children, maybe little too much.

"They can't put Mustafa on the throne he is not even five years old," Ahmed said and it was clearly seen he is too young for the throne and he still looked at Mustafa like his younger brother the way I did, but here was the real treat.

"They can and then Halime will do whatever she wants," Valide said.

"Not Halime but grandmother Safiye will do whatever she wants. You think she really wants to ally with Halime who's son she killed? She would get rid of Halime by the first opportunity," I got into mother's speech to Ahmed as I knew I had to interfere here even though I didn't want to.

"Halime should be sent to the Old Palace together with Safiye, but on your place I would do nothing bad to Mustafa-" I started saying but Valide stopped me.

"Hibetullah! Do you hear yourself?" She raised her voice on me for the first time in my life which surprised both Ahmed and me.

"No Valide I am just speaking the truth. Ahmed is still a teenager and he doesn't have any heir, only possible heir to the throne is Mustafa. By killing Mustafa you can end this dynasty, nothing shouldn't happen to him until Ahmed has more healthy heirs but even then I wouldn't have heart to kill my younger brother and I guess Ahmed wouldn't have too," I said and looked at Ahmed who's look was focused just on the floor as he was thinking.

"Ahmed will have heirs soon, I choose best concubines for him and soon there will be a heir. A brother can't ascend the Sultanate!" Valide raised her voice once again which made me sad because I loved her but she didn't want to look realistically on this way.

"Valide after I saw twenty coffins of my uncles going out of the Palace only then I realised how this law is mad and there is a way to stop that. Those princes are dead just because they weren't the firstborn," I said and Ahmed stood up.

Both Valide and I stood up at the same moment as him as we didn't know what reaction can we expect from him at this moment.

"I don't want to kill Mustafa, and I don't want to hear those talks anymore. I will decide what is best to do," Ahmed said before leaving chambers obviously being kinda mad on mother and me for having a little fight or arguing in front of him.

"Don't fill his head with those ideas, Hibetullah. Ahmed is still young and he doesn't know a lot, we must do everything to protect him but you obviously stand by Mustafa's side," mother said and I didn't know what happened to her that she changed in those few months I was absent.

"Valide, do you hear yourself what are you talking? I am always by Ahmed's side, but remember six months ago how you swore fratricide law because Ahmed wasn't first born. Now when he is Sultan you don't think the same way but getting rid of that law would only help us, you don't want to see one day your grandsons killing eachother," I said.

"Gevherhan Sultan had a huge impact on you," she said ignoring everything I have said.

"Valide I don't want us to behave like this to each other, we should be support to each others not like this," I said not understanding why my mother behaved like this towards me.

"Then you will listen to me because I know what is the best for Ahmed, and by the way we should start searching you a husband which will be loyal to us, because here is too much Safiye Sultan's loyal people," Valide said starting the topic which I hated and that was my wedding.

"I don't want to marry yet Valide, please," I said almost starting to beg her but I know it wasn't able to postpone anymore.

"Your aunt Fahriye was at your age already twice married, we shouldn't wait anymore," she said and I haven't said a word just left her chambers.

As I was going to the new chambers my mother appointed to me I realised this would be really great opportunity to meet my grandmother Safiye Sultan as I wanted to find out what plans she has now.

"Safiye Sultanim," I said as I entered her chambers and kissed her hand.

"My favourite granddaughter come here," Safiye said with a smile and showed me to sit next to her. She has always loved me a lot because before she was really close with my mother but later things changed and she changed, but towards me she still behaved the same way.

"New era of your brother Ahmed started and I am honoured to stay here in palace to help him with his duties, my son's death was so unexpected that Ahmed didn't even have a time to prepare for Sultanate," she said.

"Of course you are the one here with the most knowledge and I am happy my brother as you Sultanim here on his side. No one can help him better than you because you know everything about ruling and the state," I faked my words just to make her happy with them and I didn't want my grandmother to be against me. Sometimes fake words and lies were important to keep good relationship and she was the person that I should be in good relations.

"My dear Hibetullah, I am glad you have opinion like that. But unfornatley your mother doesn't share that opinion, I am saddened by the fact she wants to get rid of Mustafa who is still a baby," she said looking sadly at another way but this sadness wasn't for Mustafa but because Mustafa was for her easy to manipulate.

"Do not worry Sultanim, nothing bad will happen to Mustafa. Dynasty doesn't have any more heirs and he is safe here," I said and she took my hand into hers.

"I am proud on you for caring for your brothers even if you don't share the same mothers. You are great example of sister and a true Sultana," she said.
