To Love Is To Lose
December came around the corner, it was the first long continuous snowfall of the season. It quickly turned into a snowstorm inside of Ohio. Charlie and Hannah were in Hannah's hometown visiting her family. Cas was stuck at home, not able to go anywhere because of the weather conditions. He remembered Dean telling him that today was his day off. Cas called him over Skype. He waited for Dean to connect and when he did Cas said, "Hey, baby."
Dean smiled, "Hey, darling. How are you?"
"I'm good, just bored. Stuck at home. It's snowing up a storm here."
Dean questioned, "So, what you're saying is that you called me up just because you were bored?"
Cas smirked, "Maybe."
Dean joked, "Why can't you go outside? Is it because it's too cold outside for angels to fly?"
Cas rolled his eyes, smiling, "You're so cheesy."
Dean returned a smile, "How may I entertain you?"
"Tell me a joke," Cas said.
"You know what jacket society makes gays wear?"
Cas raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"Straight jackets."
Cas began laughing. Dean chuckled, "Oh come on! That wasn't even funny! Don't pity laugh at me Castiel Grace Novak!"
Cas' mouth hung open, "I told you to never use my middle name!"
Dean laughed, "It's cute."
Cas rolled his eyes, "It's a girl's name."
Dean smiled, "Don't pout, baby."
"Fine I won't, but hey I finally figured out what I'm getting you for Christmas," Cas exclaimed.
"And what would that be," Dean questioned.
"Shhh it's a surprise."
"Tell me," Dean begged.
Cas rested his chin on his hand and stared at Dean through the screen. "Only if you tell me what you got me," Cas negotiated.
Dean shook his head, "Nope, not gonna happen."
"Damn it, Dean," Cas yelled.
Dean laughed, "Nice try though."
Cas frowned and sighed, "I miss your laugh. I miss you."
Dean sighed, "I miss you too, darling. Don't worry, we'll see each other Christmas break."
Cas spoke quietly, "That's weeks from now, Dean. It's been lonely without you. I hardly even see Charlie anymore. I'm just all alone..."
"You have me."
Cas shook his head and looked down, "We talk about an hour each day and that's it. I don't know how I 'have you' if I hardly talk to you or see you."
"I want to come see you and you know that," Dean stressed.
"I know, but you can't," Cas said with tears falling down his cheeks.
Dean sighed, "Just trust me, okay?"
"I can't. I think we need a break," Cas voiced in a whisper.
Dean stared at Cas. He tried to protest, "But Cas-"
Cas ended the call just as Dean finished his sentence, "-I'm in love with you."
Sam stood at the doorway. Dean buried his face into his palms and sobbed quietly. Sam walked over to Dean and hugged him. Dean shook his head and whispered, "I have to leave to go see him."
"But you can't. You'll make it worse, Dean. Just give it some time," Sam replied.
Dean cried even harder, "But I love him."
"It's only a break-"
Dean looked up at him, "I just wish he loved me as much as I love him. I'm giving him everything I have and everything I am because I'm in love with him."
"It's going to be okay," Sam reassured.
Dean spoke between fits of sobbing, "I'd do anything to be his. I'd do anything for him to be mine. I need him. I'll die without him. If I lose him, I'll lose myself."
Sam stared at his brother, crying over his first love. He sighed and snatched Dean's phone off of his desk without Dean noticing. Sam left to go into his room. He searched for Cas in Dean's contacts. Cas was labeled as "My Fucking Cinnamon Apple." Sam dialed the number into his phone and pressed call.
