Through The Flames

Sam waited for Cas to answer. He didn't answer at all. He called several more times and then, Sam had given up. He was beginning to worry about Cas. He went into Dean's room to find that he was gone. He was in a full panic mode. He didn't want Dean to do something stupid. He sat on Dean's bed waiting for him to call back after multiple calls. Sam ended up getting a call two hours later.

Cas spoke, "Hello? Who is this?"

Sam said, "Cas, it's Sam. I need to talk you out of taking a break from Dean."

Cas sighed, "Sam, I'm not going to change my mind. It's made up. I just need some time. I've been going through depression recently and I just need time alone completely."

"You can't just keep it bottled up and ignore everyone else in your life. You do realize that? It'll make it worse," Sam argued.

"I don't expect you to understand, Sam," Cas said calmly.

"Damn right I don't understand! Dean sat in his room crying for god knows how long, believing he lost you," Sam yelled.

"This is exactly what I'm talking about. He's a little attached for certain things. This is why I need a break."

"You don't get it, do you? Someone comes into your life and cares about you, but you can't possibly believe that someone could, huh? Is that it?"

Cas pressed his fingers against his temple, "No, that's not it. I gotta go. I can't deal with this right now."

Sam began yelling into the phone, "You can't deal with this?! What about Dean!"

Cas hung up. He cried into his pillow and blasted Panic! At The Disco through his earbuds. He held his father's trenchcoat and a framed photo against his chest. Charlie called Cas earlier. She reminded him what today was. It was the anniversary of their parents' death. Cas was so caught up with other things, he completely forgot.

He wiped away his tears and quickly threw on a few layers of clothing. He grabbed his keys off the kitchen counter and ran downstairs. He hobbled out the door trying to put on his boots. He ignored the snow blowing at his face at full force. His phone vibrated, but he declined the call, not knowing who it was.

He climbed into the car and started it. He turned the heat up all the way and got out of the car to brush the snow from the windows. He slid back into his car when he was done and pulled out of the driveway with great speed, driving over blankets upon blankets of heavy snow in the driveway. He drove down the freshly plowed road and all the way to the cemetery where his parents were buried.

His phone vibrated again, but he declined it, focusing on the road leading into the cemetery. He counted each row of headstones all the way to six, then took a right. All he had to remember was the headstones were directly beside a large tree. He saw the bare tree at the end of the column and slowly came to a halt.

Cas opened the door and a gust of wind nearly knocked him over. He shuffled his way to the headstones and fell to his knees. He used his hand to brush off the snow from the piece of stone. It revealed the names of his parents, whom shared a headstone. "In Loving Memory of Jimmy Novak and beloved wife, Amelia Novak. Even in death, they never left each other's side and they will eternally rest side by side, forever and always."

Cas closed his eyes, remembering that day. Amelia was in the kitchen cooking pancakes on a Tuesday, as she always did every Tuesday. Jimmy read the morning paper at the kitchen table, listening to the radio. Cas and Charlie were getting ready for school. They were packing their bookbags in the living room, when they heard screaming coming from the kitchen. Electrical wiring caused a fire from the basement to creep its way upstairs and into the kitchen. It created a wall of fire between Charlie and Cas and their parents.

Cas could still distinctively hear his parents' last words. Jimmy yelled through the flames, "Go on! Go! Take care of each other and remember we'll always be proud of you two." His mother's last words still rung in his ear, "We will always love you, my angels."

He watched as they hugged and kissed each other, just before the flames engulfed them. Cas screamed, "No," and tried to run to them. Charlie grabbed Cas and dragged him out of there. Cas squirmed and fought it, wanting to save them, but it was too late. He blamed himself. Maybe if he had the fire alarm on they would've caught it sooner and spared their lives.

Cas laid down beside the stone against the freezing snow. He whispered, "I wish both of you were still here. I need you more than ever. With everyday, it just gets less and less easy. I start losing motivation in doing certain things like breathing and living. I miss you immensely. It'd be nice to hear your voices again to tell me what to do because I'm so close to just giving up altogether. No more worries or possible disappointments, just the three of us together again. Can't I just give up?"

A voice from behind Cas said, "No, you can't."
