The Road Not Taken

After a long drive to the drive-in, they managed to get lost. Cas asked, "Where are we?"

"Shit, I think I took a wrong turn. Check the GPS on your phone to where we are."

Cas tried to check, "I have no service."

"Are you fucking kidding me," Dean pulled over to the side of the road and checked his phone. No service either. Cas suggested, "Let's drive until we reach a motel or restaurant or something where we can figure out where we are."

Dean agreed and continued down the road with no other cars in sight. They drove for a little while until reaching a burger joint. They got out of the car and walked in together holding hands. Cas whispered, "I hope we aren't in one of those southern homophobic towns."

"You and me both."

They walked up to the counter. Dean said, "Hello ma'am. Do you mind telling us where we are? We're a little lost."

She looked at us up and down, "Where were you heading?"

"A drive-in in a little town called Rosen."

She smiled, showing various missing teeth, "Well you've got the right town, hun. When you go to pull out, take a right and continue down that road. It'll take awhile, but you're sure to come across the big sign that reads, 'Rosen's Drive-in.' Can I get you anything else?"

Dean looked up at the menu, "Can I get two bacon cheeseburgers with fries and two cokes to go with?"

She winked, "You got it, sweetheart."

They sat down at a booth, waiting for their food to be done. The place looked deserted. They didn't see anyone inside of there except an old man, coming out of the bathroom and leaving.

The food came out in about 10 minutes. Dean stared outside at the darkened sky. There was no doubt in his mind they had missed one of the movies or at least half of one. The lady handed them their food in boxes. She said, "Drive safe now, ya hear."

As soon as they walked out Cas said, "Don't you think the place was a little unsettling? How could you buy food from there?"

Dean shrugged, "A burger is a burger."

They drove for a little bit. Cas said, "Maybe you should pull over so we can eat because the food is probably getting cold."

Dean nodded and pulled off to the side and got out. Cas said, "Why are you getting out?"

"We're eating on the hood of my car."

Dean turned up the radio slightly, so they could hear it from outside. Cas tensed up, since they were in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by woods and nothing, but a road leading to god knows what.

Dean climbed onto the hood of the car and took Cas' hand to pull him up too. Dean's touch calmed Cas for a second. They started eating with Dust In The Wind by Kansas playing in the backround.

Dean stopped eating, "I love Kansas, man."

Cas laughed, "You seem to like a lot of music from the 70s and 80s."

"Some of the best decades!"

"Where did the time go," Cas said looking at the time on his phone.

"Right! I wish it was the 70s again."

"No, I meant it's already late. We left at about 1-ish and now it's already nine."

"Oh, yeah. We were driving for a good 8 hours. Got gas once, probably will need to stop again on the way home."

"Why are you always driving? That's a shit ton of money being spent on gas."

"I happen to like long car rides and I saved up money working at my Uncle Bobby's Auto Shop in South Dakota. I used to go there during the summers. He's another one of those people I miss and haven't seen in awhile."

Cas thought that soon his name would be added onto the list as well.

Dean finished his burger and crumpled up the wrapper. He leaned against the windshield and looked to Cas. He looked at every feature of Cas and all he could think about was one thing, "You know, I'm never okay. I have never been okay. This passed week has been one of the best weeks of my entire life. It's hard to explain, but you make me okay. Because of you I no longer fear living. You saved me from this monster I was forced to live with. You're my hero, Castiel."

Cas chuckled a little, "No need to get all deep. I was just doing what anyone would've done and that was to get help."

"No, you don't get it. There have been a lot of people in my life and they all knew what was going on, but none of them have done anything to end what John had been doing. Bobby would've killed him, if he had the guts, but a part of him couldn't do it. You're one of the greatest people I've ever met, Cas. You saved me."

Cas didn't know what to say and Dean leaned over to him. Dean pressed his lips to Cas' neck and whispered into his ear, "Thank you."

Cas stared at him, lips parted in shock. Dean made him feel some sort of way he's never felt before. It was a good feeling. One that made his cheeks burn with a pinkish color, that made his insides feel like they were floating and would jump out of his body at anytime, he couldn't form words to speak, and most of all, he could physically feel the blood drain from his body anytime Dean would touch him.

Dean held Cas' hand and stared up at the bright gems covering the sky. Dean whispered, "You don't have to speak. You definitely don't have to tell me you love me. Too soon. You don't even have to tell me you like me. I just don't want you to leave me. Even miles apart, I'll still need you and want you. I'll visit as often as I can and talk to you every possible minute I can of everyday. We're going to make it work. We just have to wait until June for us to be together all the time, if we last that long. I hope to god we do. We have eight months, darling. We could make that work."

Cas nodded, "I hope so."

Dean sighed, wanting to believe his own words, but unsure if he could. Cas was in a band and could surely replace him while Dean is away. Dean is a pretty attractive human being in general along with Cas. They both could easily find someone new. It wouldn't be that hard. Staying together without distancing would be the biggest struggle. They both knew that. Even with a beautiful view in front of them, they couldn't take their minds off the subject. Cas felt it in the pit of his stomach and so did Dean.

A few seconds later they realized it wasn't the same feeling when they leaned over the side of the impala and puked up anything they had eaten that day. Cas whispered, "A burger is a burger, my ass. That was totally food poisoning, Dick Pancake."

Dean continued vommitting until he was done, "I'll take your advice next time, Mr. Sassypants. Now do you got a mint?"

Cas looked at him, "Does it look like I'm the kind of person to carry a mint?"

"Someone doesn't seem too happy about getting food poisoning," Dean said in a baby tone and laughing at himself. Cas rolled his eyes at him and smiled. Dean slid off the car and walked to the trunk with his keys, avoiding the vomit. He rummaged through the back until he found the little kit he kept in his car just in case of emergency. There was a handful of mints inside of it and he pulled out two. He also grabbed his coke from the car to rinse his mouth out.

"I don't think that's very healthy, Dean."

Dean puckered his lips and pretended as if to spit the coke onto Cas. Cas covered his face, preparing for impact. Dean laughed and threw the mint at Cas, lightly. After popping the mint into his mouth, Cas suggested, "We should probably head home. We're going to be driving all night."

Dean nodded and got back into the car. The ride was mostly silent besides the radio station playing. It was as if they had nothing to say to each other. Cas was, in a way, mad at Dean for leaving and they both just kept thinking about how it would all work out. Cas ended up falling asleep. Dean thought maybe he should pull over and check into a motel, but he didn't have the heart to wake up Cas who was snuggled into the passenger's seat with Dean's blanket over his body. Their hands were still attached, never leaving each other's hold, not even when Dean shifted gears on the automatic transmission.
