Hastinapura
"I swear, Drau if you want to stay happily ever after you come with me", the raven haired maiden whispered sighing, as if speaking those few words were the most difficult task of her life.
Draupadi sighed aloud and turned to her, grabbing her shoulder and shaking her, "Dharmaa we, as in you and I, are married and we now have to face the consequences, alright? Don't be a drama queen and behave", she scolded, pointing her index finger right at the other woman's face before turning away to sit straight and fold her hands under her chest.
"By the way, I have always wondered how Hastinapur would look. Is it big? Like will we get lost in the palace? It's bigger than Panchal's palace??" Dharmini bombarded her sister with questions looking at her with her big brown eyes, fluttering her eyelashes.
"I don't know. I am going for the first time too, you know" The other woman sighed for a millionth time before looking outside the curtain of the chariot they were currently in, heading off to their in-laws.
"Drau-" " Woman, would you please not speak anymore?!" The dark haired girl snapped, glaring at the younger woman, "Narayan this girl—". She sighed, yet again dazing off for the nth time of the morning. She was nervous, in fact they both were but the fact that Draupadi's marriage was not so normal, she was worried, worried about the reaction of her other in-laws.
"Narayan Narayan" The younger woman chimed lost in her own world. Well maybe for the world she was, but in fact she was as nervous as her elder sister and worried for her, it's just her coping mechanism is a lot different than others.
She definitely knew what was to come and that made her even more worried—not because she was not ready to face any of it but because she was unknown of the real deal—the real story, the real problem.
"We're here" The girls heard the announcement, a chill going down their spine. Both of them looked at each other bracing themselves for the future to come. Dharmini plastered a smile on her face and so did Draupadi, heaving a deep sigh, both the sisters stepped out of the chariot they were in.
"Draupadi" The younger one called, looking up at her sister who nodded in response acknowledging her. "I'll follow suit" Dharmini spoke, her heart racing.
"But-" "No, no buts, please. I swear, I will not run away" Dharmini interjected, pinching her neck a little—a regular gesture she did. The older woman opened her mouth to say something but stopped, her mouth opening and closing like a fish.
Suddenly, the ladies heard a deep voice, calling for Draupadi which belonged to none other than her own husband, Arjun. She sighed, walking away from her younger sister, towards the—not so many staircases. As she walked up the stairs, a plate of flowers were placed under each of her feet right before they landed on the hard ground underneath.
Arjun introduced her to everyone. Draupadi bent down, touching Gandhari— the Rajmata as well as her elder mother in law's feet as a sign of respect.
"Pranipaat, Rajmata" She spoke, her voice filled with respect and a pleasant smile on her face.
Gandhari blessed her and helped her stand straight before holding her hand out in an attempt to touch her face, the eye mask she wore, not quite helping her in the situation. To which, Draupadi held her hand and brought it to her face, the warm smile on the rather older woman's face helped her be a little less nervous.
"Despite the fact that I wouldn't be able to look at your face, I am sure you are as elegant as my dear Arjun's glory, my child" Gandhari's pleasant smile grew wider as she continued, "Arjun, come forward my child. The newlyweds are to be welcomed together."
Draupadi's smile faltered, a small frown forming on her face realizing the real welcome is yet to be done. Arjun stepped forward, a frown on his face as well.
The elders' smiles faded and a confused expression etched on their faces as the other four brothers joined Arjun. Their mother, Kunti, takes a deep breath, bracing herself for the upcoming drama to be unfolded in front of her.
"Welcome all the five of us, mata. All of us are married" Arjun spoke making the others even more confused. The eldest of them all—Bhishma chirped in, a huge grin on his face. "Where are the other four daughters, then?" He asked, looking around for the non-existent four daughters in question.
"There are none, pitamah. The five of us married Draupadi herself", Yudhisthir spoke.
Shock washed over the others' face as the words of their eldest, never lying one's words shinked in.
Gandhari, who was holding an auspicious plate meant to be used for their welcoming, shook. The plate in her hand was about to fall when two soft hands rested over her own old ones and held the thali—plate, her grip firm.
"Pooja ki thali hai mata, ghirni nahi cahiye" Came a soft voice, which definitely did not belong to Draupadi. All the attention shifted to the owner of the soft but confident voice belonging to—Dharmini.
"Pranipaat, matashree. I'm Dharmini, Draupadi's sister and prince Yudhisthir's second wife" She introduced herself, a confident smile adoring her beautiful face.
