Chapter 36 - Zane

"Yo Zane, come look at this!" Ryker yells at me. I quickly make my way over to the boys, who are standing around one of the drug traps we set a few days ago.

We are currently in the middle of a large stretch of neutral forest very close to many werewolf packs and a few human cities.

I look down at the trap. It's been triggered.

"Blood," Jack says, staring at the trap. A grin spreads across my face as I pick up the remains of the trap, studying it carefully.

"Is this the only one?" I ask them calmly.

"We think so. We checked all the ones we remember setting but we set so many that it's hard to know whether we got them all " Ryker replies, watching me carefully.

"God, you guys are useless."

"Hey! In our defence, you set up a decent portion of the traps and it's not like you've been looking particularly hard."

I roll my eyes at him and sniff the trap.

It's hard to know whether it smells like Acacia, due to the fact that the air around these parts of the forest reek of her.

She's definitely still alive, that's for sure.

"Okay, let's go back to the base and analyse the blood and see if we have our girl" I reply smugly before running off as Ryker and Jack let out groans.

Eventually, we make our way into my office, exhausted from the hours of running back to the base.

Ryker and Jack go to flop down on the couch but I growl at them to stand back up.

"But we are tired, Zane" Ryker whines.

"And you don't think I'm not?" I glare at him.

"Well-"

"Well, nothing. You can rest when we are done. Now come on."

I turn and head through the door leading down the stairs and into the cells, the boys trailing sluggishly behind me.

I walk towards the cell where I kept Acacia, her scent faint now. Scratch marks and dried blood line the walls and floor, like an old painting of her failed escapes. I watch happily as Jack begins to scrape some of her dried blood off the ground and put it into a jar.

Eventually, he finishes and we exit the cell and head down the corridor into the lab. I set the bloody remains of the trap down on the counter and Jack places the jar next to it.

"Right, you two need to find out whether they match and then report back to me."

"What? Why us?"

"Because you guys are actually good at this type of stuff, unlike the rest of the mutts."

Ryker and Jack look at each other for a moment before looking back at me.

"And where are you going?" Ryker asks, raising an eyebrow at me.

"To sort out the stupid men of mine and see how Rhys is doing. Bloody rogues, I swear to god" I reply coldly before heading out of the room.

"Zane?" Jack asks, a hint of nerves in his tone. Annoyed, I look up from my paperwork to find them standing awkwardly in the doorway.

"Yes?" I ask bluntly.

"They don't match" Ryker mumbles quietly.

"What?!" I roar, standing up and throwing my pen across the room. We all watch as it hits the wall and shatters, leaving a small dent where the tip made contact.

I storm out of the room and down to the lab where they have the testing station set up. I study the results for a moment and realise that they weren't lying.

Shit.

Growling, I swipe everything onto the floor in annoyance. I watch as everything breaks and shatters and I spin around to face them. They stare at me in shock.

"Bro..." Ryker gawks, running his hand through his hair.

"What?!"

"That shit was bloody expensive."

"So?! We can get new ones, can't we?"

"I guess so..."

"So whose blood was it then?" I growl, glaring at them.

"We're not sure."

"What do you mean you're not sure?"

"Well, we think it could be someone from Alpha Hays pack as they are the closest pack to where the trap was..."

"But?!"

"But it could just be a stupid human because it was only five minutes away from a human city" Jack replies nervously.

I growl and slam my fists on the countertop.

I think for a moment before a smile spreads across my face.

"There's no way to know who's blood it is without getting a sample from every person in the area which is super unlikely..." he continues to ramble.

"Shut up Jack" I spit, rolling my eyes.

He looks at me for a moment before narrowing his eyes on me and raising an eyebrow.

He knows I have a plan.

"I say it's time you two pay a visit to our dear friend Alpha Hays and his stupid Scarlet Moon pack," I smirk before leaving the room, the boys in tow.
