Home and Family
Once Fowler had left, Abigail stood up and climbed up the stairs so she could be at a similar height to the Autobots. The other humans followed, though she could hear them sharing confused thoughts behind her. After a while, she grew tired of it and turned to face them, leaning on the railing behind her.
"What do you guys want to know?" she asks, a stone wall on her face, allowing no emotions to be seen.
"You looked distraught when Agent Fowler showed up", Raf says, his eyes shining with worry.
Abigail sighs softly, and runs a hand down her face. "Raf, does the last name Fowler sound familiar?"
Raf thought about it for a moment. "The only Fowler's I can think of are your brother, your sister, and..."
Abigail sighs. "Agent Fowler is my adoptive father. His wife passed away soon after my sister was born."
Her human companions were staring at her in shock, and when she turned around, the Autobots were watching her curiously.
"Abigail, you know Special Agent Fowler?" Optimus asks. Abigail sighs.
"Yes. He is... my family, I guess you could say."
"What do you mean by that?" Arcee asks. Abigail sighs softly.
"I have no living family here on this Earth. Or, if I do, they didn't want me. Either way, I was found, abandoned in a field, with only a necklace around my neck. I was taken to an orphanage, where a sweet couple, by the names of Sharon and William Fowler adopted me. I've been with them ever since."
Some of the Autobots were looking at Abigail sympyhatetically, and looked away from them, muttering an excuse about going to explore. She went back down the stairs and went down a random hall, just kinda walking around, not actually exploring. She did peek into some rooms, and didn't really see anything too interesting, and just continued along.
She sighed softly, and started singing quietly to herself, fighting back tears as the song reminded her of the loving woman that had become her mother.
"I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill.
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink."
Abigail shook her head, fighting back the tears, knowing that both her adoptive mother and father wouldn't want her to cry. She fought back the tears, but they just wouldn't go away.
"Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved."
"So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home."
Abigail choked back a sob. Sharon really was an angel to her. She made her feel part of the family even after Abigail found out she was adopted.
"I fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face."
"I hope that I see the world as you did cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived."
"So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home."
"Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person that I have become
Spread your wing
And I know that when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home."
Abigail finally lost it, and started crying. It had been a few years since Sharon had died, and Abigail had to be strong for her brother and sister, and even then, her brother was losing himself. She was scared for him. She was scared that one day she would come home and he wouldn't be there anymore.
Her eyes widened at the thought of her brother. What if... Abigail instantly shot up, and ran towards the main room, wiping away her tears as she did so.
"Uh... Optimus, I hate to bug, but no bars", Abigial overheard Jack say to Optimus as she rounded the corner.
"A security precaution", Optimus explained. "The silo walls isolate all radio waves."
"Well, if I don't call my mom, like now, I'm pretty sure the cops will be out looking for me", Jack says. Optimus leaned really close to Jack, making Abigail slightly uncomfortable, even though Optimus wasn't even near her.
"Have you broken the law?" Optimus asks. Jack looks taken aback.
"Uh... curfew. It's after 10 p.m."
Abigail's eyes widen. It's been that long. William was no doubt going to be home by then.
"Earth customs", Optimus realizes. "I hadn't considered. But the issue of your safety remains. Bulkhead, accompany Miko home."
Abigail let out a soft, sad chuckle at the excited that came from the teenage girl, but Optimus continued, causing the girl's enthusiasm to go down, though just by a margin.
"Bumblebee, you'll watch over, Raf", Optimus says. "Ratchet-"
The Autobot cut him off. "Busy!"
"Arcee, you'll accompany Jack", Optimus says.
Arcee tries to get out of it, but it was no use. Optimus looks around, and spots Abigail standing by the stairs.
"Abigail, I will accompany you home", Optimus says.
Abigail frowns. "Won't Agent Fowler recognize your vehicle form?"
Optimus eyes widen in realization before he hums softly. He looks at each of the Autobots and frowns softly.
"I do not wish to make any of the Autobots travel through the town just to make sure one or the other is safe."
"Optimus, Raf and I live on the same street. Bumblebee could easily watch over both of", Abigail says. Optimus frowns.
"Even still, I would rather run the risk of Fowler recognizing my vehicular form, than leave one of our new comrades to possibly be taken by the Decepticons", Optimus says. "And if he finds out, so be it."
Abigail sighs and watches as the Autobots transform. She waits for Raf to get to Bumblebee before she goes to Optimus' alt form. The passenger door was open and waiting for her, and she climbed in, taking in the new height. She had never been this high in a vehicle before, and she rather liked it.
The seat belt slid over her, surprising her, and she watched as they exited the base. She gazed out the window at the endless desert and the night sky. She smiled as she recognized a few of the more well known constellations, though that smile soon disappeared as she found herself remembering that it was Sharon who had taught her the different constellations.
She was grateful Optimus didn't say anything, though she got the feeling that he wanted to. Soon, they had entered the small town of Jasper, Nevada, and were driving towards her house. There were a few times when Abigail had to give Optimus directions, but that was the extent of their conversation until they reached her home.
"Thanks Optimus", Abigail said as the seatbelt slid back into its original position, and the door opened for her. "And goodnight."
She hops out of the truck as Optimus replies accordingly, and the truck door slams shut behind her. She walks up to the door and enters, bit doesn't duck this time as she didn't see her brother anywhere. She could, however, hear angry cursing from upstairs. She hurried upstairs and found her father trying to get into her brothers room. She grew worried as her father banged on the door.
"Dad, stop beating on his door. He won't answer if you do that", Abigail says, before slipping into her and grabbing the key that her brother had given her. Sure, they might not get along at the best of times, but he trusted her to stop him from doing something stupid.
She walked back over to the door, and knocked quietly. "Shaun?" she says softly. "Shaun, I'm coming in."
When she received no answer, her fear from before spiked, and she quickly unlocked the door and opened it, only to gasp at the sight before her.
There, hanging from the ceiling was her brother, rope around his neck. She looked around, and saw a note laying on his desk. She frowned and was about to go grab it when she heard Kadia's voice behind her.
"Daddy... Abby... what's goin on...?" Her voice was sleepy, and when Abigail turned around, Kadia was hugging her favorite stuffed animal. Abigail turned to look at the man she now knew was an agent for the government and gently picked up her darker skinned sister, though she blocked Kadai's vision so she couldn't see what happened in her brother's room.
"It's nothing bad, Kadia", Abigail says. "Just... Shaun left us to join Mama."
Kadia moans softly as she rubs her eyes, a yawn soon escaping her mouth.
"Go to sleep, Kadia", Abigail says. "If you want, I can sing to you."
Kadia only moans in response as her little eyes close. Abigail smiles, and sings quietly, though loud enough to block out the sound of their father calling the police.
"You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know dear
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away."
Once Abigail was done singing, she went and gently laid Kadia down on the bottom bunk, even if the top bunk was technically Kadia's.
She exited the room and saw her father leaning against the wall, his eyes closed.
"Dad. Are you going to be okay?" she asks.
"Yes. No. I don't know. Today's been a stressful day. The... people I work with are... not the best at keeping things discreet. And then with your brothers suicide... Things just haven't been the same ever since your mother was killed."
Abigail smiled softly. "You never did explain how she was killed. Did she work with you?"
Fowler frowned and shook his head. "No. But she did know my... coworkers. She got along really well with them too, especially their medic."
"How did she die?" Abigail says, afraid of the answer. She knew they had never found any remains, so to speak, but she was dead.
"She... she got in the line of fire one time. The enemy... shot her", Abigail's father said. Abigail stared at him. She had never been told this story, and she knew that he was talking about the Decepticons. However, she also knew that he had no idea she knew.
Tears welled up in her eyes, and she looked down. "Mother's death really took a toll on Shaun. He wasn't the same afterward. If only I had been here this afternoon. If only I hadn't gotten distracted with the Au-"
Abigail cut herself off, and ignored any prodding from her father. She was luckily saved from the prodding when a knock sounded at the door. Abigail knew that was the police, but she suddenly grew worried about what Optimus would think. He was outside after all. Her eyes widened as she saw her father going downstairs. He would see Optimus!
She quickly rushed into her room, and peaked out the window that showed the front. She saw several police cars with their lights flashing, and across the street sat Optimus. She could almost sense his worry from here.
She turned to her door to see some police officers going past. She walked to the door and one stopped to talk to her. She was asked questions about where she was during the day, and she answered them as truthfully as she could without revealing the Autobots.
Eventually, the police got what they needed, including the body, and any evidence from her brothers room and the room was cordoned off with tape.
And then they left. By now, it was past midnight, and Abigail was exhausted, but she was going to stay up a bot longer.
Unfortunately, she couldn't escape from her father's questions.
"Abigail, why is there a semi-truck out front?"
Abigail froze before turning to look at her father with a nervous look. "Semi-truck", she tried to ask innocently, but failed. She sighed. "I'm guessing you recognize him?"
Her father only glared at her. She sighed again.
"If you come to the Autobut base tomorrow, Optimus and I will explain all", Abigail says.
"I will hold you to you word. Now... go get some sleep."
Abigail nodded and climbed up the stairs to her room where she carefully maneuvered herself around her sleeping sister. She quickly fell asleep, even with her nervous anticipation for the next day.
