Eve of Family
Abigail groaned silently as she watched the clock tick on the wall. She had two minutes of school left, and all she wanted was to go racing with her best friend.
She sighed and placed her head in her desk, imagining the beautiful purple and black car that she was ready to drive. She glanced back up at the clock and smiled when she saw there was one minute left. She started packing up her stuff, ignoring the teacher as he drawled on.
As soon as the bell rang, Abigail was out the door and rushing to the front doors of the school were she waited for her best friend. She grinned when she saw the short stature of her twelve year old friend.
"Raf, come on!", she cried, causing the young boy to move faster. She looked down at him, and ruffled his spiky hair, to which the boy slapped at her hands.
"Abby", he whined. "Don't do that!"
Abigail laughed. "Come on, Raf. Let's go test out those new wheels of yours!"
Raf laughed and they raced to their street before going to the old drain pipe where they both immediately pulled out a car from their own backpacks, as well as a controller.
They set up a small racing arena and placed their cars in the racetrack once they turned their cars on.
"Three", Abigail grins.
"Two", Raf continues.
"One!" Abigial says, and they start racing. They laugh as they play, Abigail winning some of their races, and Raf winning the ones Abigail let him win. Eventually, they just drove the cars around randomly, only pausing once Raf's phone rang.
"Five more minutes?" Abigial heard Raf ask his mother, allowing her to answer before flipping the phone shut. He grinned at her.
"Just have five more minutes before I have to go home", Raf says. Abigail nods, and quickly speeds past him, only to stop as she heard surprised yelling coming from above them. She looked up in time to see a blue and pink motorcycle fly over them and onto the pavement. A black haired boy sat on top of it.
"Woah", Raf says as he stands. The boy shakes his head at Raf as he groans.
"You have no idea", he says as he gets off the motorcycle. Now that Abigail could see him slightly better, she recognized him as a junior she had shared a couple elective classes with. She also knew that he worked at K.O. Drive In with her, though they had never really talked. 'What was his name? John? Jake? Jack? Yes, that's it.'
She was startled out of her thoughts when Jack and Raf ran back towards her, moving away from the now transforming motorcycle and... two robots. She hadn't even realized that Raf had moved away from her, or that more vehicles had arrived.
"This ends here, Cons!" the now blue and pink motorcycle yelled as she- Abigail was assuming it was a female- ran forward to attack them.
"What are they?" Raf asked, his eyes wide with awe.
"Talking cars that turn into robots", Jack says, fear lacing his voice. "Or the other way around."
"I think it's the other way around, Jack", Abigial says calmly as she watches the blue and pink robot punch one of the other robots.
On one hand, Abigail thought it would be best to leave now before they got dragged into the fight. On the other hand, she wanted to stay and see what happened, especially when the blue and pink robot got blasted in the stomach. Abigail fought back the urge to make sure she was alright, even as the twin robots advanced toward the blue one.
She looked up at the sound of tires screeching, and saw a yellow and black car leap off the highway, and transform midair, landing on one of the twin robots, and punching the other one. The new robot pushed the face of the purple robot he stepped on into the ground, before backing up and stepping on Raf's toy car. It was then that Abigail immediately drove hers back to her, and placed it in her backpack which she then closed, and put on her back.
"Leave him alone!" she heard Raf shout, and immediately looked up to see that the twin robots had their guns pointed at her and her companions. She immediately grabbed Raf's hand and started dragging him away, even as one of the robots started moving towards them. She dragged him to a smaller drain pipe that led into the large one, and helped him up before climbing up herself. She looked back and found that Jack had followed them.
Abigail pushed Jack in front of her, and started running before turning to see that a hand was following them. Taking a look behind her, she noticed that Jack and Raf were still running. That was all it took for two metal tentacles to appear from her back and shock the hand that was following them. It fell limp, but was soon pulled away. In an instant, Abigail's tentacles were hidden, and she was looking into the friendly face of the yellow robot.
:Are you guys okay?: the robot asks as in a weird series of beeps and whirls. His round eyes watched Abigail intensely, as if he was curious about something, though he wouldn't ask.
Abigail nodded as Raf spoke. "Thank you."
:It's no problem: the robot responds before moving away. Abigail stared after him for a while, before turning to her companions.
"What did we just see?" Raf asks Abigail, though it was Jack who answered.
"No idea, and I'm not sure I want to find out", he said, before moving Raf forward. Abigail followed shortly after, glancing once more behind them. She was sure the yellow robot suspected something about one of them since he didn't have to attack that purple one.
Abigail turned back to the others only when Raf called her name. She took a deep breath, and continued forward, walking with them in the dark until they came across a ladder that would lead them out. Abigail went up first to push the sewer lid out of the way, and to help Raf out. She moved quickly and efficiently, and helped Jack and Raf back out. She turned to Jack.
"I trust you can get home safely?" she asks. Jack nods, and Abigail turns away from him with Raf's hand in hers. He seemed a bit shaken, and she continued to walk with his hand in hers as they arrived at their street. She walked with him to their street where his mother was watching for him angrily.
"Rafael Jorge Gonzales Esquival!" she shouted. "Where have you been?!"
Rafael was about to speak, but Abigail cut him off. "Sorry, Mrs. Esquival. I lost track of time, and ended up distracting Raf as a result. It's my fault he's home this late."
Raf's mother relaxes before sighing. "Come eat your dinner, m'hijo. You look really pale. Some food will help."
Raf nods shakily, and gives Abigail a quick hug before hurrying inside. His mother followed after once she gave her goodbyes to Abigail. Abigail then started on her way home, which wasn't that far. Just down the street, in fact. She opened the front door, and instantly ducked, dodging her adoptive brother's punch. She pushed past him and hurried upstairs, going to her room and locking it. She smiled at the sight of the bunk bed whose top bed held her adoptive sister who immediately swung down the ladder into Abigail's arms.
"Is he in a mood again?" Abigail whispered to her sister.
"Mmhmm", her sister whimpers. Abigail sighs and holds her close.
"C'mere, you little goober. Cuddle close." Her sister did so, and Abigail began to sing softly.
"Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee
Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff oh."
"Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee."
Now that her sister was not as frightened, Abigail let her go play with her dolls in the corner, and started working on her homework. She was glad she didn't have to work today as she was kinda worn out from the robots she encountered today.
Abigail frowned as she thought of those robots. They had seemed familiar in a way, and yet she had never seen them before. She was curious as to what it was, and wanted to know more. Sighing, Abigail ran a hand through her black hair.
"Abby", her sister said as she stood in front of her. "Can you tell me a story using the tentacles?"
Abigail smiled softly. Her little sister was the only one who knew of her extra metal limbs. She had also managed to keep a secret, which was surprising for a five year old.
"What story do you want me to tell you, Kadia?" she asked with a small smile on her face.
"The one about how you got the tentacles!!" Kadia whisper shouted.
Abigail laughed, and immediately launched into her tale.
"So there I was, just minding my own business, when out of nowhere, these high beams blind me! When I was finally able to see again, I was surprised to find that I was no longer on the planet Earth, but on a large metal planet, millions and millions of miles away", Abigail started dramatically, immediately catching Kadia's attention. She smiled softly and continued with her story.
"After a few moments of looking around, something picked me up. It had long slender metal fingers, and it carried me gently. When I tried to find it's face, I only discovered that it had no face!" Abigail covered her own face at that point, causing Kadia to squeal.
"However, the fact that it had no face did not scare me", Abigail said as she uncovered her face. "Instead, I smiled up at the metal titan that held. And in return for not screaming in fright at the metal titan, it gifted me with my tentacles."
Kadia clapped loudly at the story, and Abigail smiled. "Do you want another story, or can I go back to my homework?"
"Another one!" Kadia grinned at her sister. Abigail laughed, and told her many stories until Kadia finally fell asleep. Once Abigail had put Kadia to bed, she went back to her homework, staying up late to finish it.
