CHAPTER 30 - BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

When the weekend finally came I was equal parts excited and sad. I was excited because Jake was taking me somewhere special and I could hardly wait. I was sad because I knew that after the weekend was over, I wouldn't have his arms around me every day. It was an uncomfortable balance that seemed to pull me in every direction.

When it was time to leave on our last adventure before heading off to college, Jake came out of the bedroom with a blindfold in his hand. I looked at him curiously, as if he had lost his mind.

"Awe, come on, be a good sport!" he insisted.

His sweet smile was just too irresistible and it didn't take long for me to give in to his charm. Once we were situated in the car, he leaned over and tied it around my eyes, making sure it was secure. When he was done, he gave me a quick kiss on the tip of my nose.

"Come on my little hostage, adventure awaits us," he said with a mischievous snicker.

We drove for what felt like forever, in reality is was only about and hour and a half. I felt the car pull in and finally come to a stop. He walked over to my side of the car and opened the door for me, grabbing my hand to escort me out.

"Can I take this off yet?" I whined like a child annoying her parents.

"No, Miss Impatience, not yet!"

He laughed when I let out a frustrated grunt. We walked for a few more minutes until I could feel the sun hitting my face. It was then that I felt Jake's hands reach around me and untie my blindfold.

He couldn't contain the smile on his face when he said, "Surprise."

I couldn't help but laugh at him, he looked so excited, almost childlike. Looking around, I tried to get my bearings and it only took a second. A huge smile spread across my face and I shouted at him, "We're in St. Augustine!"

"And the place where I rocked your world with my amazing kissing skills," he joked. I slapped his arm and laughed at his adorable arrogance.

With excitement in my voice, I asked, "What are we going to do?"

"A re-do," he replied as I looked at him curiously.

My head was spinning trying to figure out exactly what he meant but the sneaky grin on his face told me that I would just have to wait to find out. We strolled hand in hand and neither of us could keep the smiles off of our faces.

This was the place that it all started and I felt so happy I could burst. He had thought of the perfect ending to our summer.

Our first stop was at the street vendors before we entered the main street. He went to speak with the lady who ran the booth and came back with something behind his back.

He looked at me with a goofy grin and said, "Your wrist please?"

I rolled my eyes, and presented my wrist to him, chuckling at the cheesiness of it all. My chuckle turned into silence with my mouth dropping open when he placed it on my arm. It was a gold, flat, banded cuff with the words, "I will love you forever," engraved with his handwriting.

I didn't think I had ever seen a more beautiful bracelet. The fact that he took the time to have it personalized with his own handwriting blew me away.

It was so thoughtful and so sweet, "I LOVE IT,!" I shouted at him, exuding way too much excitement.

He kissed my cheek and whispered in my ear, "Your welcome gorgeous."

Then he grabbed my hand and we continued on our journey. I was surprised when I saw that we were heading for the old fort. We climbed straight to the top and I wondered what he had in mind.

When we reached the top overlooking the ocean, he snuggled up to me and I thought he just wanted to enjoy the view which was fine by me, it was breathtaking. After a few minutes of just breathing in the salt air and feeling the ocean breeze on our skin, Jake finally broke the silence.

"You know how we got our tattoos because birds symbolize freedom and we both wanted a way out?"

Still staring toward the ocean with my back against his chest, I moaned in agreement, not willing to give up the assault of my senses that mother nature was providing.

"Did you know that Hummingbirds also mean overcoming difficult situations?" he asked.

"No, I didn't but that is pretty cool, maybe we should have made sure they were specifically hummingbirds instead of just flying birds," I replied.

After I said that, I felt Jake release his grasp on me with one hand and a moment later he wrapped it back around me, but this time there was a tiny black box in it. I looked down at the box and turned around to face him, looking at him with surprise.

"Jake, what is this?"

"Open it," he urged me.

I took the box from his hand and when I opened it, I almost cried. In the box was the most beautiful pair of earrings. They were dainty, gold, hummingbirds.

"I wanted to make sure you always remembered how amazing you are, you have overcome everything that life has thrown at you, you never let it any of it get you down," he said. By the time he was done, I was crying.

I couldn't help but ask him, "What did I ever do to deserve you?"

His reply melted my heart, "Be the most amazing person I have ever known?"

"Okay Mister, you are quickly approaching the sweetest boyfriend on earth."

He just smiled and grabbed my hand, leading me back toward 'Visa Alley.' We strolled past every shop and I couldn't help but wonder what he was up to next.

When we passed the ice cream shop, we had to stop, neither of us could resist that sweet, creamy treat. Once we were done, we continued on and wound up in front of the Lightner Museum. I had to chuckle, Jake hated this place so whatever he had planned came at great personal sacrifice to him.

As he payed, I remained silent, eager to see what awaited me. We skipped the first floor altogether but he did stop on the second, I think just to build the suspense and make me wonder even longer.

When we reached the third floor, I saw him right away. There was a violin player waiting in the corner and I couldn't help but smile. Smooth didn't even begin to describe Jake Stephenson.

He led me over to where the man awaited us and made a motion like they did in the old days, bowing to me and extending his hand. That sight made me giggle but I took his hand anyway and he pulled me to him. Once I was safe in his embrace, the violinist started to play.

The crowd that gathered last time was nothing compared to this. They all stared and gawked, and I couldn't help but notice the little old ladies with stars in their eyes. They were wishing they could be young and free again with some guy sweeping them off of their feet. Their thoughts shown clearly in their expressions.

I also noticed a random tourist who I kept seeing at all of the other places we had stopped. She was either on the same path as us or completely obsessed with Jake, either way it did not matter. All that mattered was that I was in the arms of an amazing man that I loved with all of my heart.

The song that was playing was so romantic and Jake was dancing like he hand channeled Fred freaking Astaire. I tried to keep up and hoped he wasn't laughing too hard at my two left feet.  If he was, he never let is show.

He just held me close and whispered in my ear, "I love you Sky," sending chills all over me. Who knew that he was such a romantic?

Up on that colonnade with the music playing and Jake's arms around me, I felt like the leading lady in an old Hollywood movie. I was so sad when it was over and that amused Jake, he knew exactly what he was doing to me. He was making me fall in love with him, all over again.

When we finally left the museum, it was starting to turn dusk and a romantic feel fell over the entire city. At night, St. Augustine became magical with all of the lights and bands, it was possibly the most enchanting place on earth.

We strolled casually back down the cobblestone streets with sound from the bands spilling out from every corner. When we approached the location of our first kiss, my heart begin to pound at just the memory of it. How could I forget a moment that changed my life forever? It was my first kiss and it was mind blowing!

I supposed that we would just walk right past it, not thinking that Jake would be as laser focused on it as I was. As we walked past the alley, I felt Jake tug my hand, pulling me into it and my heart stopped. He said re-do and that was one that I would gladly take.

Just as before, he pushed me up against the wall and surrounded me, my heart was beating so fast, I was certain he could hear it. He paused to look into my eyes and we savor every lingering second.

Finally, he planted the most passionate kiss on me that I had ever received. Even after getting a thousand kisses from him, he could still make my knees weak and I knew that he always would.

Just before he pulled away, I saw a flash to my right and quickly looked to see what it was. I was shocked to see the same tourist I had been seeing all day. Jake could see the anger starting to boil inside of me.

"What is her freaking problem?"

He looked at me and let out a laugh, clearly there was a joke that he forgot to include me in.

I looked at him, tapping my foot awaiting his response, "Spill!"

He could tell from the look on my face that he better spill quickly, "Calm down there slugger, I hired her to follow us."

I looked at him as if he had lost his mind, "What? Why would you do that?"

"Because I wanted a perfect record of every moment I spent with you today, something we could both look back on and remember how in love we are right now, in this moment," he replied.

Okay, so I had to admit, that was pretty freaking adorable. My demeanor quickly shifted from agitated to smitten. Staring into his eyes, I gave him a kiss that he wouldn't soon forget and I didn't care who was photographing it.

When I was done, I could tell his head was spinning a bit as he grabbed my hand continuing on. We wound up in the same Italian Restaurant that we had eaten at the first time, in the same booth. It was funny how that worked out and I had no doubt that he had pre-arranged it. We sat down and placed our order, so content to just be there with each other.

After the waitress left Jake looked at me and said, "Do you believe in soul mates?" Not exactly sure where he was going with that question, I decided the best response was an honest one.

"Yes, I do believe in soul mates. I believe that God created the perfect woman for every man and the perfect man for every woman. How else do you explain Adam and Eve?"

When I was done, I looked at him confidently, satisfied that I had proven my point. He grabbed my hands in his and kissed them softly and then looked over to the brick wall beside us. I could tell he was searching and when he found his prize, he presented it to me.

Looking at him curiously, I unfolded the tiny piece of paper. It was the one he had written when we were there on our first date. He was finally sharing his secret with me. I feared it might actually explode when I read the words he had written.

I'm gonna marry this girl one day, J&S

A/N

Well guys, that is it, the last chapter. I hope you enjoyed it! I will write an epilogue and post it within the next couple of days so that you can see what wound up happening with Jake & Sky. I also want to go back and properly edit the book. When I read some of those earlier chapters, I cringe. But it was my first book so I have to give myself some grace and be thankful that it is finally complete. Thanks again to each of you who have stayed with me. You will never know how much your votes and comments mean to me. Days that I was so discouraged, with hardly anyone reading, it was your encouragement that helped me push on.
