Chapter 4 Breaking Old Bonds

Previously, on His alpha her omega.

I shiver at what I have to ask next. "Hey Shelby," I start. She turns towards me. I pause for a moment to take a deep breath before speaking. "Can you unlock the door to the conference room?"

'Sure I can, but why?" Shelby asks me curiously. I let out a deep sigh. "Oh," she says softly. She must have been reading my mind because now, she knows what I'm thinking. She knows I'm about to do what no teenage girl wants to do when she has a boyfriend. Shelby knows that I'm about to break up with Ace Summers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I stand in the Conference Room, my back end resting against the table. I take a deep breath.

"Come on, Sophie. You can do this, I know you can," I tell myself.

I take in another deep breath, and mind link Ace.

"Hey, honey. Wow, you must really be missing me for you to mind link me back that quickly. Are you sure you don't want me to come over there instead?" he asks.

"No, Ace. I'm not at my house anymore," I say.

"Well. If you're not at your house anymore, then where are you?" Ace asks, confused.

I bite my lip. "the Hospital."

"Are you hurt? Did someone hurt you? Oh, they're going to pay!" He says in a tone that makes me flinch.

"No. Ace, I'm not hurt. I just need you to come down here and talk to me for a minute."

"Sophie, are you playing with me?" Ace asks, a joking tone to his voice.

"No, I'm not, Ace. Alpha's orders!" I say in my Alpha tone.

"Alright Babe. I'm on my way, can I ask what this is about?" He asks curiously.

"Just get here as fast as you can," I say, though in a way I kind of wish he wouldn't.

I disconnect the mind link.

I rub my sweaty hands on my dress. That's the fifth time I've done that since I came into this room. I let out a sigh. This time, though, it's not about what I'm going to do in the next few minutes, but it's about Luka. I want to believe he's going to be fine, but I just can't help but think the worst. What if his injuries are minor? What if they're severe? And what if they're so severe that he has to be put down for real this time?

I then shake my head. No. It won't end like that. No matter how severe his injuries are, I'd take him in a wheelchair over him being dead any day. Luka's strong, so I know he can get through this, and I'll help him get through this.

A buzzing sensation in the back of my head snaps me out of my thoughts. "Alright. I'm at the Hospital, where are you?" Ace asks me, as I connect the mind link.

"In the Conference Room," I reply to him.

"Oh. This is either going to be really good, or really bad. Alright, Babe. See you in a few minutes."

Ace disconnects the mind link.

I take another deep breath, wipe my hands on my dress and get up to start pacing, the nervousness becoming too much for me to take.

After a few minutes I hear a firm knock at the door. Pulling myself together, I stand up straight.

"Come in," I say, trying to sound calm.

The door open slowly, and in pops Ace Summers. His short, raven-black hair is smoothed down neatly, close to his scalp. His blue eyes are sharp and deep set. His look is topped off with a muscular build that would make any unmated She-Wolf stop and drool, and like all Alpha males, he has an ego to match.

"Hi, Honey, how's it going?" He closes the door behind him. His mouth drops when his eyes land on me. "Wow, you look awful," he adds, walking over towards me.

He's got me there. The neat braid that I had my hair in is now disheveled. My yellow sundress now has patches of dried dirt all over it. So he's right. I do look awful, but it was worth it because I found my mate.

Then as Ace is starting to put his arms around my waist to hold me close, I stiffen. I don't feel the connection I had with him this afternoon before I found Luka. Ace then pulls away from me.

"Sophie, are you alright? You're stiffening up. What's going on?" he asks quietly and calmly. I look down for a moment, avoiding eye contact with him.

I let out a sigh. "Ace, I found something today, and I'm not sure how you're going to take it," I reply, as calmly as I can, lifting my head back up to look at him.

"And that would be what?" he says to me. I bite down on my lip. "Come on, Soph, you can tell me anything."

I swallow hard. "I found my mate today," I say softly, and prepare for the worst.

Ace takes me by surprise when he smiles warmly at me. "That's great, Sophie. Who is he? What's his name?" There is a joyful tone to his voice.

I clear my throat nervously before speaking. "It's..." I pause and let out a deep sigh. "It's Omega Luka. He's my mate."

The smile on Ace's face vanishes in a split second.

"Wait, your mate's that little runt? Well then, reject him so that we can get on with our lives." He tries to hold me close again, but he fails. I shake him off of me before he can get his arms fully around me.

"I can't, Ace. I gave Luka my word, and that means I will not reject him, and I am not going back on my word. Not now, not ever." I say with my nervousness quickly turning into anger, and my body tensing.

"Sophie, please?" Ace asks, teeth gritting.

"No Ace, I'm putting my foot down on this one!" I yell in my Alpha tone, stomping my right foot down and cross my arms.

"So, what you're telling me is, you're dumping me for an Omega," he says, a stoic tone to his voice, trying to calm down, at least slightly.

"Yes. I am," I say, nodding my head, uncrossing my arms and putting them back at my sides.

"This can't be happening! Why would you pick him when you can have me?!?"

"He's my mate! I will always pick him. I'm sorry, but we're done," I yell back. I'm going a little red in my face, getting on my last nerve.

"I'm leaving! You'll regret the day you left me for a pathetic omega."

"All members of the Ruby Stone Pack that came along. Follow me, we're going back home!" Ace yells out through his pack mind link, turning around and starting to walk over towards the door.

"You do know, Ace, that most of your pack members that came here with you won't be going back with you?" I ask him.

Ace stops. "What do you mean by that?" He asks.

"Most of your pack members have already found their mates here, and the mates don't want to leave my pack. So that means that at least half of your pack will be staying here with me" I reply.

"How many are left, Sophie?" Ace asks me firmly.

"About five males," I reply to him with a slight smirk on my face.

Ace then starts walking towards the door, but just as he is about to open it, I stop him. "Oh, and Ace. That little runt is going to become the most powerful Alpha in the world, and if I were you, I would be watching my back," I say, glaring slightly.

Ace turns around, looking at me over his shoulder.

"Well. I'll remind you to put that on his tombstone, if me and my pack ever run across him," He says, glaring. Then he walks out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

A few moments afterwards, the buzzing sensation returns. I connect the mind link, without knowing who it is.

"Mark my words, Sophie. I will have you as my Luna one way or another," Ace says firmly through the mind link. "Until then, your pack and my pack are enemies." He disconnects the mind link.

The last thing I hear of Ace Summers is a loud and long howl that quickly fades into the distance.

A moment later Shelby opens the door, and walks in.

"Alpha," She says.

"Yes," I say, as I perk up at the sound of my name.

"Luka's X-rays are finished and your Aunt wants you to see them," she says.

I walk out of the Conference Room calmly, but inside I'm a jumble of nerves. Okay, it must be ten times as bad as I thought it was, because if it wasn't, my aunt wouldn't be wanting me to take a look at them. I then push those thoughts as far back into my mind as I can.

"How bad is it, Shelby?" I ask her.

"Well, Alpha, your aunt and I are wondering how he's still alive," Shelby replies to me. The thought sends a chill down my spine as we walk further down the hallway.

When we walk into the X-ray room, my aunt is standing there with the X-rays against the light, and looking stunned. I walk over, and stand on her left side.

"Hey, how bad is it?" I ask her.

"Okay. First off, like Shelby told you a moment ago, I don't see how this boy's still alive," she replies.

I swallow slightly, but then I compose myself. "So what do we have?" I ask.

"Okay, first off, I found out why Luka has trouble healing. When our kind gets wounded slightly it heals quickly, but if we break a bone, scar tissue forms over the break like a bandage. Now the scar tissue is not permanent, it should only last for about half an hour. In Luka's case, he doesn't get the chance to heal, because he's always getting injured and the scar tissue builds up, so therefor-"

I cut her off. "It blocks the healing process."

My Aunt Sherry gives me a slight nod, and then she continues. "That's also why he has a clubbed foot. Sometime in his past, Luka received a break to his leg joint. The scar tissue built up, and as Luka grew his leg grew crooked."

"Okay, that's not so bad. You can fix it. Right?"

"I'm not done yet. There's something else you need to see, and it's much worse," she says, as she looks towards me.

"What is it?" I ask.

Aunt Sherry then points to Luka's chest on the X-ray.

"Look closely, Sophie, and see if you can figure it out."

I lean in closer towards the X-ray, then my jaw drops and I gasp. the thing that's got me in disbelief and the thing my aunt was referring to was a fractured fourth rib. I look over towards my aunt, stunned.

"He's got a fractured rib," I say.

"Yes. But that's not what has me concerned. The way that the rib is fractured, if Luka moves that rib the slightest bit, he could puncture that lung," my Aunt explains.

"How long do you think he's had that fractured rib?" I ask, puzzled.

"It could've happened months ago."

"Okay. Well, what's our best bet?" I ask, looking away from Luka's X-ray.

"We have only one option, and you're probably not going to like it," she replies, as she turns her head slowly over towards me.

My eyes go wide. I know what word she's talking about, and I don't like it. "Oh. No. No. No. Not the S-word," I say, partly whimpering.

She nods, as she spreads her arms out, waiting for an embrace. My aunt doesn't have to wait long I walk over into her arms, and wrap my arms around her neck.

After a few moments, I speak up. "Are you sure that surgery's the right thing?" I ask her, as we pull apart slightly.

"Yes, I'm sure. I'll get a closer look at that rib," my aunt replies, as she looks at me, "and I'll get to remove all of the scar tissue."

"I don't know, surgery is pretty risky," I say softly to her.

"Sophie, don't do this for yourself, do it for Luka. Think about it. After he recovers, he will be comfortable, happy, and healthy."

She tells me to think about it, and I do. I don't like the idea of Luka going under, I just don't. Anesthesia is one of my biggest fears, and after everything that Luka's been through, the last thing I want to do is put him under. My fear for him is not that they'll give him too little, but that they'll give him too much. What kind of a mate would I be if they give Luka too much, and he dies? But on the other hand, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let Luka live on like he is now. This conversation with myself is like trying to decide the best way to rip off a bandage. Do I just rip it off as fast as I can, or rip it off slowly? I then stop myself for a moment.

My Aunt told me to do this for Luka, so I start looking at this the other way around. What kind of quality of life would Luka have if I don't let him get this surgery? Not a good one. I can tell you that much, and let's not forget he still has that fractured rib. Luka and I could be in the middle of a battle somewhere when he moves and punctures that lung, but if he has surgery that risk would be gone. Also. If he were to have the surgery, he will be more comfortable, happy, and healthy. Like my Aunt had just told me only a moment ago, I want him to have that quality of life. Comfortable, happy, healthy, and free from pain.

I have made up my mind. If surgery's our only option, then so be it.

I then look up at my Aunt. "Okay. Let's do it for Luka," I say

My aunt then gets a smile on her face. "Oh, and speaking of your mate," she pauses, as she reaches inside of her pocket and pulls something out. "This was around his neck. We had to take it off before he could get the X-ray." She hands whatever it is to me.

I take it, and look at it. "That pendant is the symbol of the Topaz stone pack," My aunt says, as I take a closer look at the pendant.

"So now we know that they're not a legend anymore," I say. I am about to keep on speaking to my aunt, when Shelby walks back through the X-ray room door. We were so focused on Luka's X-ray that we didn't even notice that Shelby had left the room.

"Doctor Sherry, Alpha," She says, as she comes in.

"What is it, Shelby?" My aunt asks, as she turns towards her.

"It's about Luka. He-" She pauses.

"Oh no," I say, turning around and starting to panic.

My aunt puts her hand on my shoulder. "Get control of yourself, Sophie. Come on, Shelby, tell us what happened."

"Luka shifted back to his human form, and he's waiting for you," Shelby says, referring to me.
