Chapter 39 Oatmeal Kisses

Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega

"Really, you love me so much that you would let me go for training for two years because you know it will make me happy. Does my happiness mean that much to you, Sophie?" Luka asks, his voice tinged with sadness.

"Of course it does, Luka. No matter where you are, or where you go, you'll always be my mate and that's for always. And as you told my uncle beforehand, two years is a pretty short period of time. We'll be back together again before you even know it."

Luka lets out a slight huff. "Thanks, Sophie Jane."

I get up from the bed, turn around and hug Luka gently. "Oh, and Luka, just because I'm your mate and I'm going to agree with whatever you decide to go with, it doesn't mean I want you doing anything illegal, and if you do something anything illegal, you're so on your own."

Luka breaks into laughter. It feels so go to hear my mate laugh again.

Sophie

By late afternoon, Luka's burns have healed up further. Some of the bad ones, like the ones on his legs, shoulders, and arms, still have a thin layer of dried blood on top, while the smaller ones have turned a shade of light pink. The wounds on his knees have scarred over.

As of now, it's just dusk, with the last raise of orange sunlight streaming through the hospital room window. Suddenly, I hear the sound of footsteps, followed by Cody's shirtless form.

"Cody, do you really have to come in here shirtless with my mate lying in the bed beside me, watching you?"

"I know. This will only take a sec, but I thought you two might want to see what Heather and I got up to last night." He slowly turns around. "Bang!" He reveals a fresh black mate mark on his right shoulder.

"Wow, Cody, did you and Heather really mark each other last night?" Cody nods. I throw my arms around him in a warm embrace.

I hear a low growl coming from Luka. It's his Alpha tone. We instantly break apart. "Congrats! So, tell me what happened."

"Well I'll cut out the naughty bits, since you're only sixteen. After Heather and I left the hospital last night, she took me back to Den House to take a shower..." He starts, but is cut off when we hear a slight whimper from Luka.

"Anyway, please continue," I say.

"Heather walked in on me as I was getting out of the shower. Seeing her standing there, I felt a spark of passion that I hadn't felt before when I locked eyes with her. In that single second, I realized that I had never wanted anyone as badly as my mate. Both of our eyes then slowly shifted over to the empty white bathtub next to us."

Cody's cut off again by another one of Luka's whimpers, this time sharper and full of longing. "Go on," I say, gesturing for him to continue.

"Well, I filled the bathtub, then we both got in and I just went in for it." Cody tells me.

"Did you two go all the way or...?" I ask him, trailing off at the end.

Cody shakes his head slightly. "No. We just did the mark itself. After we were done, Heather became sleepy, so I just picked her up out of the bathtub and placed her in her bed."

Luka whimpers again. I put two and two together. He only whimpers on hearing the words 'shower' or 'bath'.

I smile at him. "Luka, listen to me. B.A.T.H." He whines in distress.

Suddenly, Luka lets out a painful scream. My heart aching, I run over to Luka's bedside. "Luka. What's going on? Are you okay?" I gently hold his hand. The sparks shoot all the way up my arm and across my shoulder.

"My back's burning," he mumbles, in pain. A moment later, my aunt and Shelby walk in the room, quickly slipping on some gloves as they do so.

"Sophie, you better glove up. We need to roll him over," my aunt says, handing me a clean pair of gloves.

"Thanks. Cody, would you mind stepping outside for me, please?" I ask him, as I put the gloves on.

"Will do, ma'am," Cody replies, turning around and closing the door behind him.

"Okay, Shelby, could you go over to the other side of the bed and hold the sheet down for us?" I gently pull the covers off Luka.

Shelby spreads her palms as wide as possible, and places them down onto the bedsheet. My Aunt and I then grab the corners of the sheet on the other side of Luka.

My aunt looks at me. "Okay Sophie, you ready?" I nod.

"Okay. On the count of three. Luka, get ready. Three. Two. One." We gently lift up our end of the sheet, and Luka slowly rolls over onto his stomach.

"Perfect." Shelby picks up the sheet, which is now on top of Luka, and takes it away.

"Hey, that was fun. Can I do it again?" Luka is smiling, but I can see the pain in his eyes.

"Maybe in a little while, Luka. Now, let's see why your back's burning."

Luka's back is a bright pinkish red, like a bad case of sunburn. The old skin is starting to peel off to make way for the new skin. It's not as bad as I first thought, I think to myself.

"I see, Luka. The skin on your back is peeling. Shelby, could you go and get him some more painkillers, please?"

Shelby nods, but just as she begins to walk out of the room, I stop her.

"What is it, Sophie?"

"There's got to be a better way to do this then just pumping Luka full of painkillers, and then trying to pick the peeling skin off his back by hand."

A thought pops into my head. "Hang on. I think I know of a better way to do this."

"Go ahead and tell us what you have in mind," my aunt replies.

"Okay. Aunt Sherry, do you happen to know if this hospital has a bathtub anywhere?"

"Yes, of course. In the obstetrics ward, but what does that have to do with...?" She trails off. "Oh no, Sophie. You're not thinking-"

I nod.

"A bath is not the best idea at this time, Sophie," she explains firmly. "The soap will irritate the burns and cause him more pain. Moving him around in the tub to wash him off is going to make him hurt as well."

"I'm not talking about washing him off and getting him clean. I'm talking about making him an oatmeal bath so that he can soak and relax."

"Like your mother used to do at night if you were too hyper before bed?"

"Yes, exactly."

"Sophie, I still don't think it's a good idea. The water and the oatmeal could still hurt him."

I walk over to the bedside table and pick up the bottle of Stella gel. "I can make it as painless as possible for Luka. Trust me."

"I'm sure you can, but how can you be sure that's what Luka really wants?"

"Luka? Do you want a bath?" Luka just nods and whimpers.

My Aunt shakes her head. "I won't argue with that. After all, you do know this boy far better than we do. Do what your instincts tell you, and we'll support you all the way."

I then let out a sigh. "Thanks you guys." A smile spreads across my face.

"So Sophie, what do you need us to do?" Shelby asks.

"Shelby," I instruct. "Go over to the house, get a few handfuls of whole oats from the pantry, put them in one of my mother's homemade cheesecloth pouches, and then bring it up to Obstetrics." She nods and leaves the room.

I turn to my aunt. "Okay, Aunt Sherry. I need you to take Luka up there for me, please."

"No problem at all." She unlocks the brakes on the bed and rolls it towards the elevator.

The obstetrics ward is on the sixth floor. Sometimes, when I was young, my mother would take me up there to see the newborn babies or pups in her spare time. My father always told us that my brother and I came out looking perfect, while all the other babies came out looking like lizards. I always smiled at that.

"Sophie, I'm not going to have to use a stranger's bathroom, will I?" Luka asks, as the elevator doors open.

"Luka, you're such a little princess sometimes," I tease him playfully. "Don't worry. I have my own private labor and delivery room. "

"What for?"

"For that time in the future, when you and Sophie decide to have pups," my aunt informs Luka.

"Oh right," Luka says, feeling a bit embarrassed, as we move down the hall towards the room.

My aunt and I walk into the bathroom. I turn on the light, and shut the door behind me. "Okay, Aunt Sherry. Let's take Luka off the bed."

My aunt lifts him off and holds him in her arms. She reaches to take off Luka's cap, but he stops her. "Oh, no. Not this again."

This happens almost every time someone tries to take Luka's cap off his head. He's still ashamed of his bald head, and afraid of people laughing at him.

"Here, let me try." I reach for the cap. Luka stops me but his grip is slightly loosened on the cap. He shakes his head.

I look him in the eye. I can see sparks of worry in his dark brown eyes. "Luka. It's just me and my Aunt Sherry here. We love you and we would never hurt you. You're going to be fine."

After a long pause, Luka slowly lowers his arms, and allows me to gently remove the cap. The entire surface of Luka's head is totally bare. My aunt said it could take months for his hair to grow back. She was talking about hair follicle transplants. The silver branding iron Ace used on him certainly left its mark. The angry looking scars are starting to peel. Luka's head must be itching badly, I think to myself.

"It looks bad, doesn't it?" Luka's voice snaps me out of my thoughts.

I shake my head. "Luka, what have I always told you? It's fine. It'll take time."

"You know, Sophie, his head could do with a good wash. If only we had the right type of shampoo here..." My aunt looks down at Luka.

"Looking for this?" Shelby walks in, holding the oats in one hand and a large bottle of shampoo in the other.

"Shelby, how do you do that? I mean, how do you know what I need without me having to tell you?" My aunt asks, stunned.

"Gut instinct, I guess." Shelby places the bottle of shampoo on the side of the tub.

"Okay, I'll start the bath water while you two start stripping him down." I turn on the water but keep the drain open, to get rid of the cold water at the start. I put my hand under the slowly warming water. Once the water is at the right temperature, I close the drain and let the water get up to a few inches, and put a drop of Stella gel into the water. "Is he ready?"

"Yes, he is."

I take a step back to let my Aunt gently lower Luka into the tub. Luka moans when his body first makes contact with the water. "It feels good. Thanks, Sophie."

"You're welcome, hon." I turn towards Shelby. "Can you please hand me the oats?"

"Sure. Oh Sophie, I forgot a few things. Hold on." She hands the bag over and darts out of the room.

I then turn back around towards the bathtub. I hold the bundle of oats under the running faucet and let the oats start to slowly dissolve into the water. I try to keep my eyes away from Luka and on the dissolving oats.

Slowly but surely, the water starts to turn a milky white color. Once the water looks good enough to me, I drop the remaining oats down into the water.

Luka is now up to his shoulders in water. The water is an opaque milky white, so it's okay for me to look his way.

"How you doing over there, Luka?" I ask him, smiling.

"Wonderful," Luka says, in a tone that sounds like he's about to fall asleep.

Shelby pops back in the bathroom, holding a chair in one hand and few containers of some kind in the other. I turn the bath water off. Shelby places the chair between the tub itself and the wall. "Please sit."

"Shelby? What have you come up with?"

"No, nothing, it's just that you need somewhere to sit while you do this." Shelby places three candles on the bathroom counter. "Now, did someone order some lavender and jasmine candles? Because I know I did."

I shake my head. "Oh no, Shelby. You didn't really need to do that, I mean..."

She cuts me off. "Nonsense. You need it to be nice and calm in here, and candles are one of the best ways to do that." She pulls out a box of matches and lights the candles.

"There, that ought to do it. Call us if you need anything else, Sophie." Shelby blows out the match.

"Okay Shelby. Will do, thanks." I say. Shelby dims the lights and leaves, shutting the door behind her. I grab the shampoo bottle.

"So Luka, how are the pain killers working out for you?" I start to gently wet the top of Luka's head, using just my hand.

"They're a double-edged sword. I love that they take away my pain and all that, but I really hate that drugged feeling they leave me with afterwards."

"Same here, love."

Then Luka goes silent for a moment. "I still can't believe you did that."

"Did what, Luka?" I finish wetting his head down.

"I still can't believe you risked the safety of yourself, your family, and your entire pack to save me. You could've left me there to die, but you didn't."

"Oh Luka, honey..." I start to speak, but trail off when I feel something catch in my throat. I get a little bit of shampoo and start lathering up Luka's head before I continue. "Luka, honey, my heart wouldn't allow me to let you die. I didn't eat, go home, or even bathe until I got you home. I would go all the way down to the center of the earth to bring you home. No, actually, scratch that. I would go into the mantle of the earth to find you and bring you back home, that's how strong my bond is towards you. I love you, Luka."

I then hear Luka lifts his head up. "I'm so fortunate to have you as my mate, Sophie, thank you for saving me and bringing me back home." He gives me a confused look. "Well, go on, kiss me."

My heartbeat quickens as our mouths meet and lock together. I savor the warmth of his lips against mine.

As we break apart, heart still thumping, I suddenly come to the realization that the water now smells like oatmeal. Not only that, the shampoo smells like oatmeal as well.

"Hey Luka, guess what? You get to smell like a batch of oatmeal cookies for the next few days."

"Oh, well. I guess I'm just going to have to stay away from Den House for a little while. Otherwise, those little ankle biters will rip me to shreds." Luka grins so widely that I can see is back row of teeth.

"I'm sure they would, Luka. I'm sure they would." We kiss again.
