Chapter 37 The Choice
Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega
"Call me for what?" We all turn our heads to see my uncle standing in the doorway.
"Good morning, Uncle. How did you get here so fast?"
"Aunt Sherry told me beforehand."
"Can you close the door for me, please?" I ask him.
"Sure." My uncle shuts the door behind him. "Now what's this about, Sophie?"
The time has come. I look my mate in the eye. "Luka. My Aunt found the Alpha gene while she was testing your blood last night. You're a pure Alpha."
I hold my breath and wait to see his reaction.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After I make my announcement, the room stays silent for what seems like ten minutes. Both Elliot and Luka gasp and look at each other incredulously. "He's what?" "I'm a what?" they both ask me in unison. "I'm...what? Am I really...an Alp...?"
I nod.
"Here, Luka, eat your muffin, before I do." Elliot hands Luka's muffin over to him. This time, Luka takes it and begins to nibble on it. "There you go, eat it all."
"Okay, Luka, after you finish, Shelby and I are going to take you into the operating room so that we can clean the wounds on your knees," my aunt announces. "Speaking of that, we need to get that room ready urgently. Come on, Shelby." She motions for Shelby to follow her.
I look around the room. Elliot, my Uncle, Luka and I are now the only ones left in this room. Keith left us during the long few minutes after the big announcement, as he heard an emergency call from his parents over the mind link. Cody wanted to listen in to find out what was going on, so he went as well. I wonder what the emergency could be, I think to myself.
I'm snapped out of my train of thought by a new scent in the room. Standing in the doorway is a senior man with a kind face, medium skin tone, green eyes like mine, a light, yet still strong frame, and silver, gray hair combed back over his head. As I'm about to greet him, Luka beats me to it. "It's you."
I'm stunned. How can Luka know this man if he's never seen him before? I must be missing some crucial pieces of information. "Luka, how do you know him?"
"That's the teacher that used to let me use his hose pipe as a shower." Luka gives me a curious look. "Do you know him as well, Sophie?"
I smile at Luka. "I should know him. After all, we're closely related."
"How?"
Just as I'm about to tell him, the old man clears his throat and speaks.
"Good morning, my sweet little granddaughter," he says sweetly, as he walks slowly over towards the bed.
"Good morning to you as well, grandpa." I smile as I wrap my arms around him. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, it took me a while, but I've finally gotten around to seeing your mate. Where is he?" asks my Grandpa.
"He's right here." I gesture to Luka.
My grandpa's eyes widen. "Well I'll be...when word got around to me that my beloved granddaughter had found her mate, never once did I imagine that it would be you." my grandpa says, recognizing Luka.
"He's your grandfather?" asks Luka.
"Yes he is. Luka, meet Smith Peterson. Grandpa, this is my mate, Luka" I say.
"So I finally get to know your name, after all these years." Grandpa Smith smiles.
I look towards Luka. Tears are streaming from his eyes. "I've always wanted to thank you for what you did for me, sir."
"You're very welcome, Luka. I couldn't just leave you out there with no way of cleaning yourself off, as filthy as you were. What I did might not have been much, but it was the best that I could do."
"Yes sir, it was better than nothing."
"Now it makes sense. I just figured that you were hurt or killed. Never once did I think you had moved up," my grandfather remarks.
"Yes it was quite a shock in the beginning, when I first found out." Luka chuckles.
"Yea, I bet. Hey, being in a tub full of warm water feels a lot better than having a cold stream of water going down your back, doesn't it?" Grandpa asks him, chuckling slightly.
Luka nods his head vigorously.
"Hey, Elliot, I think I know someone who would dearly like to meet you," I call.
Elliot who had been looking out of the window on the far side of the room, trots over. "Grandpa, this is Elliot. He's the closest thing to a brother that Luka has."
"It's nice to meet you, sir." They greet each other and shake hands.
"Alright the room's ready, Luka, it's time to get those wounds cleaned!" Aunt Sherry and Shelby walk back into the room. "Oh hi, Dad. I would love to stay and talk with you but..." She trails off as I stand up from the bed.
"I know. You're on duty. I know," Grandpa says, stepping away from the bed a little.
"Aunt Sherry. After you've rinsed the wounds out and before you wrap the wounds in gauze, I want you to bring him back in here, I'll do the rest" I tell her.
"Alright, Sophie, will do." my aunt nods.
"Luka. You be good, okay? I'll see you in just a little bit." Elliot hugs Luka gently.
"Be brave, my Alpha. I'll see you in just a little bit as well." I give Luka a peck on the lips, just before Shelby rolls Luka's bed out of the room.
"Well, I think I'm going to go home and eat some breakfast. I'll see you guys later." my uncle stands up and leaves. "Cody, what's going on?" I hear my uncle ask outside, as I hear the sound of footsteps.
Cody's head pops into the doorway only a moment later. There's an urgent tone in his voice. "Sophie, my brother and I need to talk with you."
I decide not to push him for questions. "Grandpa, Elliot. You two stay here." I follow Cody out of the room.
I follow Cody back into the conference room, to find Keith pacing up and down its length. "Okay, you two. What's up?"
"I'll try to keep it short, Alpha, but basically, our parents have realized that Cody ratted them out," Keith replies.
"What do you mean, Keith?"
"The morning after Cody fled the house, our parents gave me three days to try and bring him back home. When Heather came to get his clothes, they questioned her. She refused to comment and left, and they knew that something was up."
Good on her, I think to myself.
"Get ready, Alpha. They're coming for Luka and for Cody." Keith states bluntly.
"How long do we have?" I ask him.
"Till sundown, at most," Keith replies.
I start to think about it for a moment. "Not if we strike first."
Cody and Keith's heads both turn towards me. "What's your plan?"
"We'll go in quietly, and hopefully they won't put up too much of a fight."
"Great. Well, we need to leave as soon as possible." Cody is ready to take off.
"I also don't want anyone getting hurt. Let me get my uncle and Chris, and then we'll pay your parents a visit."
Cody nods. They step aside so that I can use the mind link.
"Uncle, Uncle," I call out.
"Sophie, I've just got home, what do you need?"
"I need you to listen in on something. I'm going to send it to you over the mind link."
"Alright then."
I replay what the Betas just told me in my mind.
"Well... we need to intercept them as quickly as possible," my uncle states, matter-of-factly.
"Pass that on to Chris. Meet the rest of us at the Grim household."
"Okay, Sophie, I'm on it." The link disconnects.
I turn back towards Keith and Cody, who are now just staring at me with curious looks on their faces. "Alright. Let's go." The three of us run out of the main hospital entrance, shifting into our wolves as we hit the pavement of the main road.
***
As we come up to the house, I turn towards Keith and Cody. "Let's split up. I'll go around the right side of the house and cut them off, while you two go around the left side of the house."
They both nod.
My paws slow to a crawl as I sneak around the back of the house. There are still piles of dried, cracked leaves on the ground from last fall. I take care to be as silent as possible.
When I'm almost to the other side of the house, I silently stand up and peek my head slightly around the corner. Dan is walking down the long driveway, coming back from taking the trash out for the morning. My ears twitch as I lean back, ready to spring.
When Dan is almost out in front of me, I break into a run, sending him flying through the air across the driveway with a loud thud. At the last moment he shifts and lands on his paws.
"What the heck, Alpha?"
"Traitor!" I growl loudly, standing up and showing all of my canines.
"What are you talking about?" Dan whimpers, trying to play the fool, but I know better.
"You tell me."
I can promise you, Alpha, we're not doing anything wrong."
"Really, dad, do you really think an Alpha is stupid enough to believe that?" Cody steps forward.
"Cody, you've come back," Dan yelps, but I can hear the forced happiness in his tone. I step up and block him from getting to Cody.
"Cody, you've come back to us," I hear Emily say, as she leaps off the front porch, shifting landing on her paws as she hits the ground. Her smooth-coated dark silver gray wolf begins to prance over towards him, but I stop her path as well.
"Why are you not letting us near our son, Alpha?" Emily whimpers, flattening her ears.
"I don't know, why do you think, mother?" Keith replies, leaping down from the roof.
"Keith, son. Thank goodness, maybe you can help us shed some light on the situation." Dan yelps. Keith trots over and stops on my far right hand side.
"He doesn't have to. It should become crystal clear to the both of you in a few moments," snarls my uncle, as he and Chris arrive. "Your dark, sick and twisted family secret is out. We know about everything."
"What secret, what are you all talking about?" Both Dan and Emily whimper together.
"We know everything. We know about my dad telling the boys to do all those horrible things to my Luka. We know about how you two took hold of the reins after my father's death and took it to a whole other level. We know about the videotaping, the video tapes, and the orders you forced your own kids to carry out. We know about the bath house prank."
I huff softly before speaking again. "We know about Cody running away from home the night before Luka's kidnapping. We know you two helped Ace plot out the whole thing. We know that you sent Keith after Cody to try to bring him back, and that you marked him as a traitor to your family. And just a bit ago we found out about the plot to kill Luka and your youngest son."
"We did no such things. Alpha, these are our pups, our babies," Emily whimpers.
"Funny. If I was one of your so called 'babies,' then why did you let Dad force me to look at that photo Keith took of Luka in the bath house every time he thought I was stepping out of line?" It's Cody who speaks.
"Alpha, you have no proof that we did any of that stuff." Dan shakes his wolf's head.
I let out a long sigh. "Alright. We hoped we could settle this quickly and without fuss. I don't want to do this, but you leave us no choice. Circle and mind link, everybody."
We form a circle around them, mentally playing through everything the boys have confessed to me over the past two days, growling and snapping our jaws as we do so.
"Enough!" Dan snaps, tackling my uncle to the ground. "This is slander!"
The sound of snapping jaws and clashing teeth cuts through the peaceful late morning air. My uncle starts to grunt, a sign that Dan is gaining the upper hand.
Snarling, I tackle Emily to the ground. The sound of Emily whimpering causes Dan to lift his head up. "If you kill him, I'll kill her," I growl at him. This buys my uncle enough time to shake Dan's wolf off and get back onto his feet.
"Now, if that wasn't a guilty lash out, I don't know what is," I grumble. Dan and Emily's wolves whine, with their tails between their legs, and their heads lowered and their ears flattened in surrender.
"We have evidence, in the form of the tapes." Dan pleads desperately. "If you want us to, we can give you Ace's head on a platter."
"I think I'll leave that honor to myself, thanks," I say.
I continue. "Moving on. As you should know, treason in this pack is punishable by death or exile. Now, it would usually be Luka's job to decide your fate, however since he's absent due to medical reasons, I'm leaving the choice solely up to Cody."
I turn towards him. "Cody. Do they leave the pack or die?"
Cody and Chris both look at each other, then nod in agreement. Cody charges at his parents, with Chris right behind him. Dan and Emily take off towards the main pack border, with Chris and Cody hot on their heels.
"Killing them would be too easy. They deserve to live with their actions, just like I'm going to have to live with mine," Cody explains, breathing heavily over the mind link.
I turn towards my uncle. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Little Sophie, that was nothing this old wolf couldn't handle," he chuckles, with a wolfie grin. "Well. I think I should go with them. That way, it'll be three on two if something goes wrong."
"Go for it," I yelp.
"Thanks, Little Sophie, I'll be back in a little bit." My uncle runs off to join the others, while Keith and I turn around and head back towards the hospital.
