Chapter 32 Girl Talk and A Discovery
Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega
"Job well done, Aunt Sherry, now I'm going to be getting back to my shower. Shelby, could you keep the coconut oil cold until it's time for me to use it?" I ask, looking towards her.
"Will do."
"Okay one more thing, everyone listen up please. No one touches that bottle but me. My mom wanted me to be the only one who could apply this to a patient's body."
They all nod. I head back towards the shower.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This time there's no interruption, and I'm able to take my shower without a hitch. I walk downstairs back towards Luka's room, clean and fresh. While I was in the shower, I mind linked the rest of the pack to check up on them. No major injuries, just some minor open wounds and a lot of scrapes.
When I walk back into the room, Luka is still sleeping peacefully in his hospital bed, while Shelby gently holds his left hand. Whatever my aunt gave him before I got in the shower must've been some strong stuff because it's still doing its job.
I walk over towards Luka's free right hand, "May I?" I ask her, slowly reaching out towards my target.
"Of course. Luka's still out of it, but I'd think that he'd want you to be the one holding his hand instead of me right now."
"Yes, you're probably right." I gently take his hand.
"He is a tough little cookie, isn't he?" She asks me, with a faint smile on her face.
"Yes, at least I think so," I say softly with a slight nod. "Hey, Shelby, where's my aunt?"
"In the lab. She drew some blood from Luka while you were in the shower."
"Oh, okay," I say softly.
Shelby's eyes then shift from Luka to the bottle still sitting on the small table beside his bed, "Okay Alpha, what was that stuff you put on Luka's face?"
"It's something that mom came up with called Stella gel, or star gel, whichever you prefer," I explain. "It's designed to slow the effects, pain, and the heat of silver burns."
"Well, why was it hidden?" Shelby asks.
"Well, it all started four years ago when my mom found a mysterious group of herbs on her nightly walk. She had never seen them before, she was unsure of them and she was about to walk away, but then she looked up, and that's when it happened. She saw a shooting star shoot across the night sky, only there was no mention of a meteor shower that day. My mom then got the feeling that there might be something more to these herbs that met the eye, so she took some to my aunt to be analyzed. They found the herbs contained a compound that slowed the harmful effects of silver, so my mom started working on a formula for it to make it more effective."
"That was an interesting story, Alpha, but what does that have to do with what I just asked you?" Shelby asks, arching one of her eyebrows.
"I'm getting there. Anyway, it took my mom and I almost a year and a half, but we finally made a formula that worked. My mom let me help her because I was so good with medicine. The night of the attack that took her away from the pack, I saw her sneaking back to the lab in the middle of the fight. My guess was that she was going to hide the only bottle of Stella gel. That was the last time I ever saw my mother alive. After we discovered her body I found a note under my pillow. It simply said, 'I have hidden the Stella gel somewhere secret but safe. I can't even tell you where it's located, Sophie.' The note went on to say that if I found it no one but I could use it, because I was the only one my mom trusted with it."
"Why didn't she trust anyone else?" Shelby asks.
"She didn't want the gel to get into the wrong hands. Could you imagine if the Rogues got their hands on it? They would start cutting the packs down one wolf at a time and there would be nothing we could do to stop them" I reply to her.
"Well, you are straight with your answers" Shelby says.
"Well, what can I say, I was born to be the Alpha." That last part feels like a kick in the gut, because that was the thing that ripped me and my former best friend apart, the former best friend who's now standing across the room from me.
"Shelby. Can you close the door? I think you and I need to have a long-awaited talk."
"Sure, Alpha," She says as she gently lays Luka's hand back down by his side. She walks over to the door and closes it calmly. "So, what is it you want to talk to me about, Alpha?"
"I want to make things right between us, I want to talk to you about what happened on the day you found out I had the Alpha gene."
"What about it?" Shelby has her arms crossed.
"Okay, look. You and I were best friends during pack doctor training. We were like sisters, we told each other everything, and then..."
She cuts me off. "And then when they were about to hand you your badge, the two head Betas at the time showed up and that's when everything came out. That was the day that I learned that when someone says they are being truthful, it doesn't always mean they are being truthful at all."
"Okay, so what you're basically trying to ask me is..." I trail off.
"Why didn't you just tell me the truth instead of hiding it from me and then lie about it to my face?" She tries to keep her voice down.
"I felt like I had no choice. Shelby, only a few people knew I had the Alpha gene because it's so uncommon for a female, but that doesn't mean I didn't attract attention. Throughout my childhood I was constantly stared at. Everywhere I went, I felt like I was being watched. Then, when I decided to undertake pack doctor training, I pulled my aunt aside and asked her to keep the gene a secret because I didn't want to be treated any different. She agreed."
"I don't care what the reason is. You still hurt me, and I lost my best friend," Shelby replies.
I let out a sigh and put Luka's other hand gently back down at his side. "Look, I'm sorry, Shelby, but the fact is that I do have the Alpha gene. I can't change that, but do you forgive me for not telling you?" I ask her.
"If I didn't, who would you ask to be your maid-of-honor at your future wedding?" Shelby playfully asks, holding her arms slightly open.
"That's true, I would have no one," I say, taking a few steps before I walk into Shelby's now open arms. "I have only one condition if you want to be my maid-of-honor," I say, wrapping my arms around her.
"And what's that, Alpha?" Shelby asks quietly into my ear.
"Call me Sophie from now on instead of Alpha, alright?"
"Okay, Sophie, will do," Shelby asks right before I hear a familiar chime of the PA system.
"Alpha Sophie Peterson, please report to Laboratory 29." That's my aunt's lab. Something must be going on. Aunt Sherry doesn't call for me like that unless it's urgent.
"I have to go and see what my Aunt Sherry wants, Shelby, you watch over him and you come get me if anything happens."
"Alright," She says, with a slight nod of her head.
As I head for the lab my mind starts to wander. My aunt doesn't call me like that unless it's an emergency. I start to think the worst. What if my Luka has a bad infection somewhere in his body? What if he's got an incurable disease or maybe one that could be fatal, or even worse? What if he's got cancer? Oh God, please, don't let it be cancer.
Cancer is one of my biggest fears. My Grandmother died from it when I was eight. The memory sends a cold chill down my spine.
The elevator stops and the doors open. When I get to the lab, I knock on the door a few times before a girl I don't recognize opens the door and lets me in. As I walk through she gives me a slight nod before walking out of the room, closing the door behind her. My aunt is standing near all the microscopes holding a piece of paper.
I slowly walk over to her. "Okay, I'm ready. How bad is it? Is it serious, is it fatal-"
My aunt cuts me off. "Whoa, Little Sophie, calm down. You're about to give yourself a heart attack, okay? Relax and take a deep breath. The good news is, there's nothing wrong with Luka."
"Well if there's not anything wrong with him, why did you call me up here?"
"Hold on, I wasn't finished. I said I didn't find anything medically wrong with him, but I found something unique about him."
"What did you find?" My heart is thumping.
"Actually I don't think unique is the proper word for this, more like unbelievable, impossible, unimaginable. There's a one in a million chance of it ever happening again."
"Okay, calm down, Aunt Sherry. Now you're about to give yourself a heart attack," I say putting my hands on her shoulders to steady her.
"You're right, hold on I need a chair. Hey, Kaylee, could you bring me a chair?" She then asks the girl across the room looking over a huge stack of paperwork. Unlike the lab tech that opened the door, I do recognize Kaylee, she was one of my other classmates along with Shelby. She brings a chair over and sets it behind my aunt. "Thank you, dear" says my aunt, as she gently sits down, Kaylee returns to her office. Now we are completely alone.
"Okay, Sophie, do you remember how the gene blood rankings work?"
"Refresh my memory," I reply.
"Well, as you know, every werewolf is born with the ranking genes from the mother and the father. The rank itself is solely determined by the father. Now every pack rank as a gene code, like you have your Alpha gene, the Betas have their genes, the Gammas have their genes, etc., etc. Even the Omegas have their genes, but they're tricky. An omega happens when a wolf has a Rogue for a mother and a father who's already an Omega, that's why they are so rare."
"Right, that makes sense."
"Well, I ran Luka's blood. His mother was a Rogue, as Luka told us, but then I found something that I wasn't expecting..." She trails off handing me the piece of paper.
I take it slowly and look at it.
ROGUE 50 PERCENT
ALPHA 50 PERCENT
I cover my hand with my mouth. I look up at her in shock. "Are you sure?"
"I ran that blood through five times. Same result each time."
"You sure?" I ask again, removing my hand from my mouth.
"I'm positive. Sophie, do you know what this means?"
"It means that Luka's father was an Alpha."
"Yes, that's right," she says, with a slight nod.
"But, if Luka was born to be an Alpha like I was, why was he made the Omega in the first place?" I ask her.
"That, I don't know."
The door to the lab opens. Shelby runs up to us. "Sophie, Luka's awake."
"Aunt Sherry, I have to go back down there," I say.
"It's fine. Now hurry up, you don't want to leave that boy alone in his room for very long."
Shelby and I beat it out of the lab.
