Chapter 30 Assurance, Trust, and Breaking away

A/N Hi guy's this chapter is going to be a little change of pace for us. Instead of this Chapter being told in Luka's or Sophie point of view it's going to be told mostly in Cody's, but I'm not sure how i'm going to do but we hope you enjoy the chapter anyway.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega

"Understood, Alpha. Don't worry Sophie, we'll take care of him," Keith says.

I then look down towards Luka, "Alright Luka. Stay safe, and I'll see you again soon," I say softly as I plant a kiss in between his eyes.

I shift. "Chris, Uncle Liam, let's finish this battle."

Just before we run off to join the fight, I turn back towards Luka.

"Take good care, my love."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cody's P.O.V.

I try to move quietly, but the leaf litter on the ground is so brittle and crumbly that it's pretty much impossible. I'm also carrying the future Alpha in my arms, and from the amount of injuries that I can see on his body, every step I take could put him in more pain, the last thing I want to do.

My big brother and I just came back into the woods surrounding the torture house. Alpha Luka is still laying close to my chest. I can feel his body shaking all the way through my arms, I don't think it's from pain, though. I think it's from fear. Well, why wouldn't it be right? I mean my brother and I have put him through hell the past few years, but that should be water under the bridge by now.

"Or, maybe we could take him all the way to Blood Stone Canyon and leave him there." Keith is just a few feet behind me. I tune him out and concentrate on moving as silently as possible.

I wish there was a way for me to tell him how sorry we are. Well, at least I'm sorry for what I did. I don't know about Keith, but I do wish there was an easy way to tell him that we didn't mean to do any of the things we did.

Suddenly, Luka's eyes open and he looks at me. His face turns to a pale shade of green. Something he heard Keith say must have made his stomach start to churn.

I turn around to face my brother. "Do you mind?"

Keith gives me a puzzled look. "Cody, what's with you? We have the runt. Let's get rid of him so that you can come back home."

I then give my brother a firm, questioning look. "Is this why they sent you to go out with me on this task, because they thought you could convince me into coming back home?"

My brother then shakes his head slightly and gives me an honest look, "No, not at all, they just thought..." I cut him off, my face slightly angered.

"They thought what, Keith? That after a few days, I would get homesick and come crawling back? I left on my own free will, and that's something I haven't had in years. I left because I didn't want them controlling me, and I also wanted to do the right thing, which was to help Luka get out of a mess they started."

"Why are you acting like this towards me? I'm your big brother, why don't you dump the runt somewhere far away? Then everything will be over."

"No," I say firmly. "I accept him as my Alpha. I will defend him until our last breaths to protect him, and if you want to challenge that, we can fight this out right now."

"Okay, bro. Calm down, I won't try to hurt the runt again, so just chill." Keith holds up his hands in surrender.

"Okay, good. Oh and one other thing, he's got a name. It's Luka, not Runt."

"Thanks for telling me. I'll try to remember that."

"So how are you doing, Luka?" I ask as I look back down at him.

"I'm fine, just getting a little hot."

Keith raises his eyebrows, like he always does when he has his thinking cap on. "Why would you be getting hot, you're bare to the bone. Oh I know why, my brother..."

I cut him off. "It's something much more serious, Keith."

"What do you mean?"

"Okay, how much do you know about silver burns, Keith?" I ask him.

He gives me a confused look. "I know they hurt."

I shake my head. "You're hopeless sometimes. Alright. I'll do a quick rundown. When you get burned with silver, the wound will heat up. Now a first degree silver burn can be treated just like a normal burn. But when you have second or third degree burns as bad as Luka's scattered all over the body, the extent of the inflammation causes the body to heat up on the inside out."

"So what do we do?" Keith asks.

"Well, the most logical solution would be to get him to the pack hospital and get him under expert care as quickly as possible, but that will take too long. We need to cool him down as soon as possible. So I reckon getting him to the river is our best bet right now..." I trail off, hearing something in the distance.

"What's our best bet?" Keith asks me with a questionable look on his face.

"Just be quiet, Keith."

He shakes his head, "No, I want to hear what you were about to say."

"No, seriously bro, shut up."

The penny finally drops. "What is it?" He asks.

We both squint our eyes. Slowly we make out three dark brown shadows, growling and snarling as they emerge from the thick trees in front of us. "This isn't good."

We take off running, with the three wolves hot on our heels.

If this was just a normal werewolf chase, my brother and I would simply shift, turn around the other way, and fight, but today, with the future Alpha in my arms, that's just not an option for me. I then hear Keith shift. I turn to him and he gives me a look. "Just because you can't shift doesn't mean I can't."

I smile at him. Show off.

I look back down at Luka and notice that his eyes are changing color. My pace quickens. This is bad, I think to myself. If Luka lets his wolf take control now when he's this weak, the stress could be too much on his body and end up killing him.

I shake my head. "No, Luka. You can't let your wolf take control, you might die."

"But I'm hurting so much," he manages to croak.

I take in a deep breath, "I know, Luka, just stay in control for me. And for Sophie."

"I'll try."

I hear a popping sound from over my shoulder. One of the dark brown wolves got too close to Keith's side, and now he's sprawled on the forest floor, lifeless, as the remaining two try to catch up to us. "Keith, that was pretty smooth," I say as he runs back up alongside me and Luka.

"Thanks."

As we round the corner, my eyes go wide. Sitting in between us, Luka, and home, is a large log that stretches from one side of the trail to the other. Before, when we charged through here, I was able to bound over it without a hitch with the others, but that was when I was in my wolf form and my paws were free. Now I'm in my human form and my hands are full. Can I really jump over this log?

Well, it's not like I have much of a choice. After all, I can't turn around and fight. "Hold on," I say to Luka, who grabs my shirt and pulls it slightly towards him.

At the last minute, I leap. It now feels like I'm going over the log in slow motion then in a fraction of a second I land on my feet with a thud, Keith then soars over the same log a few seconds later followed by the two remaining dark brown wolves. I look ahead and see the river and the boundary, I look back down at Luka. His eyes are changing colors back and forth as he struggles to stay in control. "Hold on, Luka, we're almost home, hang in there."

Keith stops by the riverbank and signals for me to go through. "You go first. I'll cover while you cross."

While I cross with Luka, Keith has his back turned, growling loudly, showing all of his canines. "Go home!"

The two wolves slowly turn around and head back into the dense forest.

Once I'm across, my first priority is to cool Luka down. I put my hand to Luka's forehead. His skin is hot to the touch, but it's not from fever. I find a calm pool near the bank of the river and gently place him down in the cool water. I get down myself so that I can hold his head above the water. The sound that follows sounds like a morning egg in a hot skillet. Luka is gritting his teeth from the pain. "Luka, the pain only lasts a second. Hold on there."

A moment later, Luka sighs in relief.

I look at my brother who's still standing on the bank. "So now what?" Keith asks, looking back at me.

I sigh. "Well, I don't think he's strong enough for the trip to the hospital right now. So better make yourself comfortable, we're going to be here until he cools down and regains enough strength."

"Fine." Keith sits down.

I look back down at Luka who's been in the water now for a least a few minutes. I can see that he has goosebumps on his arms and his teeth are chattering, I gently take him out of the water, walk out of the river, and sit down on the ground with Luka in my arms.

"Cody? What are you doing?"

"Warming him up a little. That's the thing with cooling down in water, it's really hard to get the temperature right."

"Hey, can you do me a favor, can you pull out one of my water bottles?"

"Sure" He replies with a nod. "Here." He reaches over and hands me the bottle.

"Thanks," I say, gently taking the bottle from him. I open it, and give Luka a bit of water, which he seems fairly grateful for. His eyes light up, but then he leans back against my chest and his eyes begin to slide shut.

"No, Luka. Look. I know you're tired, and I know you don't want to, but you've got to stay awake."

"Okay."

Now that Luka's out of the water, I can see the full extent of his injuries. I'm shocked. How can he still be alive? He's pretty much running on sheer willpower at this point.

I feel Luka's forehead again. He's heating back up. I pick him up and put him back down in the water.

I try to think of a way to pass the time, because if I were Luka, I would be bored out of my mind right now. "Did you know I use to babysit Sophie when she was little?"

Luka looks at me, wide-eyed. "You're kidding."

I shake my head, "Am not. She was ten and I was fourteen. On days or nights when no one was around to watch her, I'd be tasked with looking after her."

"What was Sophie like when she was little?" Luka asks.

"Let me think about it for a moment. Well, she was like a living, breathing ball of energy. When we'd go to the park up around the main part of the territory, I'd look away from her for a split second, and she'd be gone, but then I would look up a nearby tree and there she'd be, just looking down at me, smiling." That brings an even bigger smile to his face.

Once I've got Luka and myself out of the water and back on dry land again, a thought strikes me. "Hey, bro, can you open my fanny pack and pull out that bag of fresh fruit for me please?" I ask Keith. He nods, pulls the bag out of my pack, and hands it to me.

"Thanks." I gently take the bag from him and open it. "Sure, no problem at all," Keith replies.

I open the bag and find pieces of sliced kiwifruit, my favorite. Luka looks at the bag and then at me. It's a look which needs no translation. I pull out a piece. "Now, if this starts to hurt the inside of your mouth, you just spit it out." He nods.

"Okay then, here you go," I say, as I pop the slice of Kiwi into Luka's open mouth. Luka chews it up right away.

"You like that, do you?" Luka nods.

"If you think you're happy now, Luka, wait till we get you to the hospital and you get jacked up on painkillers," Keith says, chuckling to himself. I'm shocked, that's the first time I've ever heard Keith actually call him by his real name.

"Can you please not mention painkillers to me at a time like this? I'm dying over here."

Then we hear rustling coming from amongst the trees on the other side of the river, "Cody, be still," Keith growls, as he shifts, and stands in front of me and Luka. The fur on the back of Keith's neck stands up on end, but then he takes a sniff and he instantly relaxes.

"It's Sophie."

Sophie's P.O.V.

I cross the river in human form. The first thing I see is Keith, with his dark gray fur standing up on end. He huffs and moves aside, revealing Cody, who is holding Luka in his arms.

"Luka" I say softly. I take him in my arms and gently hold him close. Luka actually looks a little better now. I know he probably doesn't feel that way, but the dried blood on his head and his knees has all washed away.

"I didn't think he'd be able to take the trip to the pack hospital. So we've tried to keep him cool here," Cody says.

"Well, I didn't think I'd be saying this again, but good job you two, you've done good."

"Thanks," Cody says softly.

"Sophie," someone howls. I turn my head and see Chris coming across the river with one dark blond wolf, and two light blond wolves at his sides.

"Chris," I say, as he crosses to the other side.

"This is my mate and lovely wife, Rosa, and my beautiful twin girls Anastasia and Aaliyah." Chris introduces his family. "It's a pleasure to meet you all," I reply.

"Alpha," they say in unison, bowing their heads.

"Sophie, what's going on?" Keith asks.

"Ace's pack is with him on the far side of his territory, but in a few days he'll move back to the main part." I reply.

"Was anyone killed?"

I shake my head, "No, thankfully, but some were wounded."

"What about the enemy's side, how many deaths and how many injured?" Cody asks.

"Over ten injured, and four dead," I reply.

"Make that five, Keith took one out while we were being pursued." Cody adds.

I look at him slightly stunned, "Well, good work, Keith," I say with a slight smile on my face.

"Thank you, Ma'am," Keith says, smiling as well.

"Luka!" I hear someone call. I turn to see Elliot and the rest of the Alpha and Omega groups come back across the river. Elliot trots over and bends his head down slightly. "Oh, Luka, look at what that monster did to you. I should've killed him when I had my chance."

Luka suddenly grits his teeth. "What's wrong with him?" Elliot yelps.

"The pain is starting to get too much for him to take and he's heating up. We have got to get him to the pack hospital ASAP," I say, in an urgent tone.

"Get on my back and I'll take you there" Elliot yelps.

"Elliot, you've fought, and you're fatigued. You wouldn't be able to carry both of us. I'm sorry."

"Should we mind link with hospital staff for an ambulance?" Elliot suggests.

"No," I reply. "It would be nice, but there are no roads here."

Elliot whimpers and flattens his ears. Then Cody's silver wolf comes running up to us, so fast that Elliot has to get out of the way to avoid getting hit.

"You two get on my back, I'll take you there. I can take the weight, and I've been dying to have a good run in my wolf form," Cody grumbles, from deep inside his chest.

"Are you sure, man? You haven't slept in four days" I overhear Keith say quietly, but I pretend I didn't hear it.

I don't want to, but I don't have much choice on the matter. I look towards my uncle. He shifts back. "Can you hold him for me until I get on Cody's back?" I ask him. He nods and carefully takes Luka from me. I pull myself up and swing my leg around to the other side, kind of like getting on a horse. "Okay, now, gently does it."

"You got him?" My uncle asks, as he lets go of Luka's body.

"I've got him. Okay, guys, let's go."

Cody moves off, and the rest of the pack follow his lead. I look down and make eye contact with Luka. I smile it him. "Well here you are again, back home."
