Chapter 25 A Wolf On the Inside

Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega

My aunt stands up. "It's up to you, Sophie. What do you want to do?"

I only need a second to answer. "Let's make a rescue plan."

Luka's P.O.V.

I awake in a dimly lit room. It's dark, but I can tell I'm not at home with Sophie. I try to move my hands. A sharp, burning pain rips through my wrists. I look down and I can just barely see that my wrists are bounded by something, but I can't tell what because of the lighting.

Suddenly all the memories - the bet that I made with my love, the chicken I found, my howling for Sophie to help me, right before I passed out - flood back into my mind. I'm being held captive against my will. I'm back in my worst nightmare, but this time I can't wake up from it.

I have to try to get out of here, I think to myself. The sharp, burning pain in my wrists intensifies as I struggle against the shackles around my wrists. After a few seconds of struggling, I stop and breathe in deeply.

Then, with no warning, the lights above turn on, bathing the room in bright white light. I look down and see that my wrists are bounded by two silver cuffs that are attached to the arms of a little wooden chair that I'm sitting in.

A voice snaps me out of my thoughts. A deep, strong male voice. "So, Luka, you're finally awake." I look up to see a tall wolf with greased jet black hair, slightly tanned complexion, and turquoise blue eyes.

"Who are you?" I ask him simply.

"My name is Ace Summers, Alpha of the Ruby stone Pack." He replies to me, almost stoically.

"You're Sophie's former boyfriend."

"I am, and I want her back"

"Well you can't have her back, she's my mate and that means..." I trail off when I see another wolf walk in, carrying an object with an iron handle and something round and silver on the end of it.

The nameless wolf hands it to Alpha Ace. "Tell me, do you know what this is, Luka?" he asks me with a smirk. I shake my head.

"This is a little toy that I got just for you." He moves the object towards the bottom of my leg near the top of my foot.

As soon as those words leave his mouth, my blood turns to ice. My heart starts to race, and my entire body flinches. The object halts momentarily. Ace looks up at me. "Try not to move too much. It'll make this go a lot easier if you don't."

He touches the object to my leg. I let out a bloodcurdling scream.

Sophie's P.O.V.

"What do you mean, you don't know?"

The rest of the group is sitting around the meeting table. Three days have passed since Luka was kidnapped and ever since then we've gone through countless rescue plans. But we still haven't been able to produce a map of the Ruby Stone Pack grounds, which has hindered our progress somewhat.

"I'm sorry, Alpha Sophie. We've been here for so long now that the memories of our old home are rather hazy." Susie is a snowflake gray wolf with jade eyes who came with the breakaway group from Ace's pack.

"It's okay, Susie. I'm the one who should be sorry. This is all still hard on me." I say, lowering my head.

"It's okay, Alpha, we understand." She moves some of her long dirty blond hair out of her face with a deft flick of her hand. I let out a slight sigh.

For three days now I've been in the doldrums. I haven't eaten at all. When my aunt tries to give me something, I turn her away. I also haven't taken a shower. I'm starting to smell a bit, but I no longer care, not until we get Luka back home. I haven't even gone home. Nobody has, in fact. Most of the adult members have stayed with me in the meeting room to help me with planning the rescue; the only non-participants are Keith, Cody, and their parents. At night, we all get our sleeping bags out of the closet and spread them out across the meeting room. My uncle sleeps against the wall near the door, so he can keep watch. Most of the members sleep around the meeting table, and I sleep with Elliot at the spot where he and Luka first met. It's the only place in the room where we can actually get a good night's sleep.

"Well, we're back at square one again." My uncle is sitting to the left of me.

I don't feel like raising my head, until we hear an alert howl from Quinn. I raise my head, "Quinn. What's going on?"

"A Ruby Stone wolf has just come over the main border."

"Do you need help?" I ask him.

"No, Ma'am. We don't believe he's an enemy."

"Okay, Quinn. My Uncle and I will be there ASAP." I hang up.

I then turn towards my uncle. "So, I take it you heard that?"

"Yep, let's go. This could be important," my uncle responds.

"Well, come on then, let's go." I get up from my chair, head towards the open window, and jump out. I shift in mid-air and land on my paws as I hit the ground with a thud. My uncle's dark brown-and-white wolf follows.

We race to the main border, a few miles away from the park where Luka lived before he met me. As we get closer I start to wonder to myself, who could it be? When Quinn comes into view I see the wolf in question next to him. He's a tall, russet-brown wolf with bright hazel eyes.

I bare my teeth. "Who are you?"

"Chris Young, Alpha Sophie."

I look over towards Quinn, being sure to keep one eye on Chris at all times. "Sophie, this is Beta Chris, my adoptive father."

"I don't care if he is your adoptive father or not. The fact remains, two of his pack members took my mate from me." I turn back towards Chris.

"I can help you," he whimpers, flattening his ears.

"I think your pack have helped me quite enough over the past few days."

"I promise I'm not a threat, and I really do want to help get Luka back to you. I'm going to shift back to get something out of my pocket. Please don't kill me or anything." Chris grumbles while being in a crouched position. Then his wolf shifts back, revealing a tall guy with auburn hair and brown eyes. He reaches into his jeans pocket, pulls out a map and hands it out to me.

My uncle shifts back, takes the map from him, and looks at it.

"That's a map of the two territories, plus the surrounding lands. I can help you make a plan and get Luka back home safe and sound, all you've got to do is trust me."

I flatten my ears slightly, unsure of what to do next.

Chris senses my hesitation. He slowly gets down on his knees, "Fine. If you will not trust me, Alpha, then please kill me now!" He chokes back tears.

"Dad! Don't-" Quinn yelps.

I'm taken aback. "Why snoop so low, Chris? Why betray your own side?"

"Because I can't stand to see that boy suffer any more." The tears stream down his cheeks.

A thought comes to me. "How much family have you left behind in the Ruby Stone Pack?"

"I have two daughters. Twins." Chris reaches into his other back pocket, pulls out a picture, and shows it to me. It's Quinn with a pair of twin girls. Both have long red hair that goes past their shoulders, a normal complexion and blue eyes.

Chris is putting his daughters' lives on the line to do this. There's no doubt about it. I shift back and hold out my hands towards him. "Come on, on your feet. We're allies now." I say as I help Chris to his feet.

A few minutes later, Chris, my uncle, and I are back in the meeting room sitting around the table. Quinn had to go back to work. "Okay, Chris. First off, how do you know that Luka's suffering?"

Chris is sitting across the table from me. He lets out a deep sigh. "I'm one of the wolves supposed to be guarding him. But I've actually been secretly taking care of him for the past few nights."

'Why did you decide to go against Ace?"

"I was stationed outside the place where Luka was being kept. I was on lookout, while Alpha Ace did whatever he wanted to do. Suddenly, a blood curdling scream rang out. About half an hour after that, Ace and the others left, leaving Luka in there sobbing in pain. A little while after that, Luka was still in pain, only by this point he was moaning. I got tired of hearing it, so I walked inside. Now originally I was going inside just to tell him to be quiet, but as I was walking towards him Luka opened his eyes and looked at me. When I looked into his eyes I saw... no, no, I can't relive it..." Chris breaks down once again.

"What did you see when you looked into Luka's eyes, Chris?" I take care to soften my voice.

"My kids are Luka's age, and when I looked into his eyes, I thought of my girls." I thought to myself, "What if it was one of my daughters who was cuffed in that chair instead of him, and what would that be like for me?' Anyway, I told Luka that no matter what happens to me, I would get him out or at least ease his suffering, one way or another. Period."

"Okay. Next question. Where is Luka being kept at?"

He then turns to my uncle. "The map. Please."

My uncle pulls out the map in question from his pocket, and hands it back to Chris, who spreads it across the table. "Alpha Sophie, pen please. We need to move fast."

I nod, and grab a pen from one of the drawers on my desk. "Thanks, Alpha. Now in the lower left hand corner of the map, that's Citrine River and a little bit of your meadow. Then after you get through the thick trees, you come into the Ruby stone pack grounds themselves, do you follow me so far?" Chris asks, as he points things out with the tip of the pen.

"Yes. Now go on, please," I reply politely.

"Okay. The Beta House is in the center, to the right hand side, and the Alpha House is to the left."

"Okay, this is all very nice, but get to the point. Where is Luka being held?" I arch one of my eyebrows.

"See the square-shaped building just on the other side of the trees? That's the torture house. That's where Luka's being held at."

I swallow hard.

"Are there any guards around the torture house and if so, how many are there?" Art asks.

"Good question, Art. Of course there are guards. Two wolves in the front, two wolves in the back, four in total."

"Okay. Now, the big question is, how to we all get over there with minimal collateral damage?"

"I haven't really figured that part out yet," Chris replies.

The meeting is suddenly interrupted by a frantic knock at the door, and the sound of a little girl screaming. I get up and open the door.

On the other side of the door stand Amanda, Greg, and a very angry-looking Victoria, who's yelling, screaming, and flailing her arms and legs around all over the place.

Amanda gives me the look of a puppy when it knows it's done something wrong. "I'm sorry for the sudden interruption, Alpha, but this has been going on non-stop for the past three days ever since what happened to Luka. If you have time, can you please help us try to figure out what's got her so upset?"

"Sure, Amanda, come on in and put her down. Let's see if we can figure this thing out." I shut the door behind them. Amanda puts Victoria down on the floor. She's still yelling and screaming.

I get down on my knees. "What's wrong, little one?"

Victoria looks up at me then speaks, "Two t's," she simply replies.

I arch one eyebrow in confusion. "Can you say that again please, honey?"

"Two t's," she repeats.

I then look up towards both Amanda and Greg. "What's she saying?"

"We don't know, so far that's her response every time we ask her what the problem is," Greg replies.

I think about it. "Alright, hold on a second guys. Let's approach this from a different angle. Now then, let's see if she can show us what she means by what she's saying."

I get down on my knees again. "Victoria, sweetie. We don't know what two t's mean, would you please show us?" I ask her as I then get up.

Victoria trots over to the table and pulls the map down carrying the pen down with it, as soon as the map and pen land on the floor she gets right to work. Her parents start to panic. "No, Victoria. Honey, that's not a coloring book," Amanda says.

"I'll get her," Greg says, but as he reaches over to grab her I put my hand firmly on his shoulder. "Alpha, what's wrong?" Greg asks me, confused.

"Let her do what she has to do," I reply calmly. I then start to walk over to her myself.

Amanda said she started crying right after Luka was kidnapped. Maybe Victoria has already figured out a rescue plan. I know it seems highly unlikely, but at this point this is pretty much the closest thing we have to a breakthrough.

I bend down, hoping to see what she's drawing on the map, but no dice. I just have to sit down and wait for her to finish.

After about two minutes Victoria puts the pen down and brings the map over so that I can see what she's done. "Two t's" Victoria says, pointing to her handiwork as she hands it to me.

I look closely at the map. Victoria has drawn two black arrows, one longer than the other, one going to the left of the trees and one going to the right. "Okay. I see the two arrows, but what does that have to do with..."

I trail off, as I start to think to myself. Two t's definitely means something, but I'm not sure what. It can't be two arrows. That would be two a's. Two trees? No. Two teeth? No. Two teas? That doesn't even make any sense.

I sure do wish thinking was a team sport. Come on, Sophie. Think.

Hang on. I think back. A team sport.

"Two teams." I say in a whisper.

Victoria nods. I stare at the map, ideas taking shape in my mind.

"What is it?" My uncle looks at me quizzically.

"We've got the start of a plan. Victoria wants us all to split into two groups, one going to the left and one going to the right."

"Sophie, you're the boss. Do you think we can trust a plan started by an eight-year-old?" Andrew looks towards me.

"Andrew, you take orders from a sixteen-year-old. I'm still just a kid myself," I reply with a smirk. Victoria is standing there giving me a look that says, 'Go on, you've got this.'

I turn back towards the pack members sitting around the table. "Well, this is by far the best plan we have so far," I say. "So I say we run with it, and tweak it as we go."

I pull out my wallet from my pocket, and pull out a twenty-dollar bill, which I hand to Greg and Amanda. "Ice cream is on me today," I say as I give it to them. I hold my hand up. "Don't try to deny it, it's my treat in my way of saying thanks."

Greg picks Victoria up. "Well, okay then. Thanks, Alpha. Come on, Victoria. Let's go get some ice cream, you've earned it."

"Wait for me, you guys. Thanks, Alpha Sophie. See you later." Amanda leaves the room with them.

"No problem, anytime, guys, any time," I wave to them as they walk out the door.

Chris checks his watch. "I've got to go back to Ruby stone."

"Wait, I thought you were working for us."

"I am. But look. Ace doesn't know I'm here. He still thinks I'm on an early morning run." Chris checks his watch again. "Well, I better get back before the rest of the pack wakes up." He starts to get up from his chair, but just before he leaves the table, I stop him.

"Hold on, I have one more question for you. What are they doing to Luka?"

"Alpha Sophie, I don't think you want to know the answer to that."

I let out a growl, my eyes slowly turning from green to yellow. I do my best to control myself, clenching my teeth. "Chris, either you tell me everything you know or the alliance is over."

Chris sighs before speaking again. "Alpha Sophie, how long do you think it will take you to come up with the rest of that plan?"

"Three, four, five days, something like that," I reply in a deep breath, starting to calm down. "I don't want to rush this. This is my mate. I don't want a cockup."

"I'm sorry to tell you this, Alpha, but time is running out. I rather doubt that Luka has less than half that time to live. You need to act soon."

"Why? What's Ace doing to him?"

Chris grimaces, then looks at me. "It'll be easier if you just look into my eyes. A lot easier."

As I look into Chris's eyes, they turn from his human's brown to his wolf's bright hazel ones. I see Luka sitting in a little wooden chair, his hands bounded by silver cuffs. I watch in horror as Ace, who's standing in front of him, places what looks like a silver branding iron to Luka's skin and then slowly brings it up the rest of his leg.

I look away from Chris's eyes and the images stop. My legs are shaking.

"Ace said he'd do that on a new part of Luka's body every day until you come to get Luka, or reconcile with him. One of the two."

I walk over towards the window for some fresh air, my legs still shaking slightly from what I've just seen. My mind is already going into overdrive, racing through strategies of attack. "Chris, go. I'm sure that Luka will need you later tonight."

"Is there anything you want me to tell Luka once I get back?" he asks, getting up from his chair.

"Just tell him I love him, and that'll see him soon," I reply, trying hard not to break down and cry.

"Great. Thanks again, for letting me help you guys. I won't let you down. Promise." Chris sprints forward and leaps out of the window. I walk over and look out the open window, as Chris, in wolf form, makes a run for Ruby Stone.

I hope Luka can hold on for just a little while longer, I think to myself.
