Chapter 24 Break Down and Stand Tall
Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega
A few seconds later, we finally break apart. I'm panting. Luka's significantly less puffed than I am.
"Wow. That... was... amazing." Luka looks me in the eye, and sees that I want more. As I slowly lean in towards him, he stops me. "Wait, Sophie. I'm not ready to be marked yet, so we'll have to take this slow, okay?"
I just smile at him and gently push him onto his back.
"I love slow."

Luka's P.O.V.
Sophie and I are in the meadow, working on my skills. Right now, we're concentrating on wolf control training.
It's hard. I'm scared about letting my wolf take control, because I don't know what he'll do once he takes over, and the last thing that I want is for Sophie to get hurt. Secondly, I've never fully done it before.
But I don't give up and keep trying, just like Sophie tells me to.
I take in another deep breath and focus. I feel my wolf start to rise up, and my human emotions start to retreat to the back of my mind, taking me with them. But just as I'm about to lose control, I stop.
I look towards Sophie. "It's just no use, Sophie. I just can't do it."
"It'll take time, Luka. Tell you what, you've worked hard, let's just call it quits for today." Sophie sits down on the ground next to me.
I turn away. Then I start to think about something, something I haven't told anyone yet, not Sophie, and especially not Elliot. If I did, he might think I'm crazy.
"Can I tell you something?"
"Sure you can, baby, what's going on?"
"Okay. This might sound a bit crazy, but I feel a pull towards Elliot, not a mate pull, more like a brotherly pull, with something mixed in with it, but I can't tell what it is."
"Oh, is that all?" She smiles.
"Yes. I've felt it since the first day I met Elliot. That's why I easily trusted him. Please don't tell him. At least not until I've figured out what this pull is."
"No worries, I won't." She looks up towards the sky. "It'll be dusk soon, so we'd best be getting home."
She stands up, walks over to me and holds out her hands. I grab hold of them, and she gently pulls me to my feet.
"Hey, Sophie, would you mind if I took the long way home?" I ask, as she lets go of my hands.
"By yourself?" Sophie asks, slightly stunned.
"Yes, what's the harm in that?" I ask her.
"It's almost night."
"Judging by how fast I can run, I can make it back home before nightfall, besides I've got everything under control."
"Alright, just be careful, okay?"
"No worries, Sophie, I will."
Sophie gently presses her lips to mine, but as quickly as we begin, we stop. We break apart, but as she's walking away, I smirk.
"Hey, Sophie," I call out. She stops, turns around, and looks back at me.
"Bet I can get home before you can."
"Oh no, Luka. Please tell me you did not just challenge me to a race."
"Hmm... You know what Sophie Jane, I think I just did."
"Oh, this is so on," Sophie replies, as she shifts and takes off towards home. I smile a little as I turn around towards the tree line, shift myself, and take off into the surrounding forest.
I run in my normal speed because I'm in no rush to get home. I start to think about the kisses we had last night. The first kiss felt amazing, like I had wanted to do it since the moment I first met her. The sparks went all over and throughout my entire body, as if someone had just poured liquid fire and ice through my veins, just like it did when I shifted the last full moon, but a lot more powerful. The second one that Sophie gave me lasted a bit longer, more of a soft, soothing, gentle kiss across the lips. They were both great.
I've put on weight. A few mornings ago, I walked into the bathroom to change into clean clothes, and as I did this I noticed that my ribs were no longer visible. I walked back into our bedroom to grab a shirt, and Sophie was still lying in bed. When her eyes landed on my chest, her face lit up so brightly that I was sure she would've blasted off to the moon if she could.
A scent snaps me out of my thoughts. It smells like meat. I take in another sniff. Smells like chicken, I think to myself. How can I be smelling chicken? Sophie can't be home already, could she? No, I can't even get home that fast, even while using my wolf speed. I decide to follow the scent to see what's going on. The scent gets stronger and stronger. I slow to a walk.
There, lying under a bush, is a whole raw chicken, the kind that you would find in a store. How did it get there? Someone must have dropped it.
I take a look over my shoulder.
I look back down at the chicken. Well, no sense in letting it go to waste. It's mine now, I think to myself as I bend down and pull the chicken out from under the bush.
As I always do, I sniff it to make sure it's safe. It smells fine, so I take my first bite. The flavor of the chicken bursts inside my mouth.
By the fourth bite, my legs start to shake slightly and my mind starts to go fuzzy. Why am I starting to feel sleepy?
My eyes go wide. It's then I realize that I've felt this before, right before entering that three-year nightmare. I'm being drugged, I think to myself.
Alright, just stay calm, I tell myself. I could just take off and run away, but at this point I feel so groggy that I'm not even sure I could make it a few feet. My legs are trying to give out from underneath me.
I may only have a few moments left. I need to get in contact with Sophie and tell her what's going on, but at this point my mind is so fuzzy that I can't even use the mind link. Then a thought comes to me. Back on the night that Sophie burned the belt and we all howled, Sophie said, 'Your howl will come when you need it most,' and now I need it the most. I take in a deep breath, my legs getting weaker and weaker by the second.
Alright. I've only got one shot at this, better make it work, I tell myself. I raise my head and let out a very long, high pitched howl, then I fall to the ground and the world goes black.

Sophie's P.O.V.
I'm in front of the pack hospital, talking to my aunt on her break. Right now, I've just told her about the kisses Luka and I had last night.
"Really, you two did, for how long?" my aunt asks me, sounding shocked, her eyes wide.
"The first one lasted around sixty seconds, but Luka and I must have enjoyed the second one, so much that we lost track of time."
"How did you like it? How did it feel?" she asks, grinning from ear to ear.
"I liked it very much, and it just felt...magical," I reply, with a dreamy look in my eye.
"Who made the first moves?" my aunt asks, still slightly in shock.
"Well, the second one was started by me, but the first one was all started by..."
I get cut off by a very long, high-pitched sounding howl ripping through the trees.
The howl sounds like music to my ears. Whoever that is, he or she must have a nice set of pipes. Then my eyes go wide. There's only one wolf whose howl would sound like music to my ears.
I look the other way towards the woods. My Alpha senses activate. It's my eyes again, they quickly travel to the middle of the forest, were I see two male shirtless guys. One of them picks up what looks to be Luka's unconscious wolf form, and tosses him over his shoulder like a rag doll.
My eyes then return to normal. With my heart now frantically beating inside my chest I turn back towards my aunt. "Luka," I say, worried.
My aunt then gives me a shocked, but funny look, not realizing what I've just seen. "Luka made the very first move. Wow, way to step up to the plate."
"No, Aunt Sherry. Luka's in danger, two wolves are trying to kidnap him." I'm starting to sound frantic. My aunt's face changes in an instant. "Hurry. Go. I'll tell your uncle, now hurry! Go!"
I shift and take off. I don't even feel myself shift. It just happens, and I'm on four paws before I even know it.
I run into the forest so fast and hard that any small trees that I come into contact with are instantly trampled under my feet. I can barely feel my paws hit the ground as I run. My surroundings go by in a blur. I just have one thing on my mind, saving Luka.
I catch the scents of the rival wolves, I run even faster, much harder. I then see what looks like two little dots in my vision in front of me.
The dots materialize into figures. Two boys, one older than the other.
"You're both on Emerald Stone Pack grounds! Stop now!" I snarl deeply.
They don't stop. I pick up the pace and run faster, now only my toes hit the ground as I run. I'm running so fast now that I can see that I'm kicking up a trail of dirt behind me, it's now that I can smell that the wolves belong the Ruby Stone Pack. Ace sent them, I think to myself.
I start to fall back. My legs are getting tired, but I can see Luka's body draped over the bigger wolf's shoulder, so I know I can't just give up. I know now what it is I have to do, let my wolf take full control. I focus and imagine my human face shifting into my wolf's face. Almost instantly, I feel myself go to the back of my mind and my wolf take control, she lets out a loud growl as her pace picks back up.
As I watch the scene play out in slow motion in front of me, I now realize where they're trying to take Luka. The Citrine River. If they manage to get Luka over the border, I wouldn't be able to go after him. Even though I would want to, Ace's pack is twice the size of my own. I don't want any bloodshed.
My wolf looks up ahead of us and we both see the opening in the trees that leads to the meadow. This is my last chance, I think to myself.
We run across the meadow as if we're on fire. My heart aches. The older boy with Luka crosses the river first, but my wolf grabs hold of the younger boy in mid jump and tugs him back by his foot, forcing the older boy to turn back and look. The metallic taste of blood enters my wolf's mouth as she rips into the boy's leg, growling and snarling as she does, and she's just about to rip it off when the boy rolls over and kicks my wolf in the mouth, sending her flying off of him and onto her back.
"Come on!" I hear the other boy call from across the river. The other boy gets up, hobbles over the river, leaving my wolf lying on her back.
A second later, I regain control. I walk over to the river, just in time to see a last glimpse of my mate, before he disappears into the thick trees. I look down slowly and see my reflection in the water, the wolf staring back isn't the strong, confident, brave alpha that everyone sees in me, but a small, lost, and lonely she-wolf that just lost her mate.
I turn away from the river and let out a low, depressing howl. I start to make my way towards the meeting valley. As I take my time running through the woods, I feel all the pack members link up to me. Now they will all know what has happened, and that means they'll be looking to me to decide our next move. I can't handle this now, I think to myself.
When I come out into the meeting valley I'm surprised when the first wolf I see is not my uncle but Cody Grim, sprinting in from the other side, and by the looks of it he urgently wants to tell me something. but then he stops right in the center of the valley. A moment later I see the rest of my pack charge out of the trees, Cody's wolf disappearing behind them. It takes less than a second before I'm surrounded.
"Is it true about what happened to Luka, Sophie?" Elliot gets to me first. I don't have time to respond before they're all around me.
"We need a plan. Ace made his move, now let's make ours."
"We have to move quickly."
"Sophie, what's our next move?"
"Sophie, it's up to you, what are we going to do.'
"Sophie, you're the boss, what do you want us to do?"
"What do you want us to do?"
"You're the boss, what are we going to do?"
With every question, every word, and every sound I feel like I'm being ripped apart. I can't take it.
I snap.
"I don't know, alright? This is all my fault anyway. I didn't have enough wolves on look out and on patrol to catch them. The reality is, Luka's gone and since I don't have a big enough pack to take on Ruby Stone, he's probably going to die and there's nothing I can do about it."
Outburst over, I take off running again, this time towards home.
I take a look back behind me to see if I'm being followed. Art starts to make a move, but my uncle steps in front of him. "No. Let her grieve," I hear him snarl. I keep on running.
I shift back into my human form as I come up to the house. I unlock the door and step inside. You can hear a pin drop from across the room. I don't make lunch when I come in. Why bother? I leave the door wide open and head straight up the stairs. If my pack wants to come after me, let them come.
As soon as I walk into our room all of my walls start to crumble down, like an old building that just got hit with a wrecking ball. I walk over, get on to Luka's side of the bed, and lay down on my stomach, breathing in his scent and sobbing into the mattress as I do so.
I'm sorry, Luka, I think to myself as I quietly sob. I broke my promise to you, I told you I would keep you safe and I failed. I have failed as a mate, a soul mate, and a friend. If I had more guards on look out around and on the border and out on patrol this wouldn't have happened. Now whatever happens to you, or whatever they decide to do to you, will be because of me. I'm sorry, Luka. I'm so very sorry.
A soft knock snaps me out of my thoughts. I hear the muted creak of my bedroom door opening, and the sound of footsteps as they come into the room. I can't help but think it's the rest of my pack, coming to corner me so that they can get their answers.
"Sophie," a soft voice says. I stop sobbing, but I'm still sniffling slightly. Even though I've heard my name countless times, I never imagined that I'd hear it said by that voice again.
I lift my head and look over my shoulder. There, standing a few feet from the doorway, are my Aunt Sherry and Shelby. I calmly sit up on the side of the bed, as they both walk over and sit down beside me on the bed. "We heard about what happened to Luka." My aunt starts caressing my blond hair.
"Who hasn't by now?" I clear my throat.
"Sophie, you do know that you can't hide the fact that you've been crying from us, right?" my aunt asks playfully, as she gently holds my head against her shoulder, as if I were still a newborn.
"Well, it's a good thing I know now, otherwise I would be trying so hard to keep from breaking down right about now." I sniffle a little more.
"Okay, Sophie, please tell us, why are you crying?" my aunt asks me, as I sit back up.
"You know why. You heard me when I was in the meeting valley." I lower my head. They just nod their heads in sympathy. "This is all my fault, if I had only..."
My aunt cuts me off.
"Stop it, Sophie. I can't stand to see you beat yourself up over this. I know you think that if you had put more wolves on guard duty this wouldn't have happened, but we were stretched to our limits. We're what, thirty members strong counting the pups?" I nod my head in agreement. "Okay then. Why don't we put a rescue plan together, knock on Ace's door, and get Luka back?"
"Ace's pack is twice the size of ours, and I don't want anybody to get hurt," I reply. "Rescuing Luka would be like me jumping into a pool full of hungry piranhas by myself."
Shelby, who's been quiet all this time, speaks up. "Sophie, I just want to let you know you won't be jumping into that pool alone. You'll have us behind you, and you'll have your whole pack behind you as well. Because let me tell you something, Sophie. You're not the only one who's worried sick about Luka, he was also a good friend to your aunt, uncle, and I, not to mention a brother to Elliot. And even though some of the others might not want to admit it, when that boy turns eighteen he will become the Alpha..." Shelby pauses to clear her throat for a second. "Look, Sophie. All I'm trying to tell you is this. You don't have to worry about facing Ace alone. Your aunt and I are with you. And anyway, piranhas don't attack unless they sense blood."
I feel all my pack members starting to connect with me again, but this time it's different.
"I'm with you," I hear someone say on the other end.
"Same here, I'm with you loud and clear, Sophie."
"You should know, you're the best alpha in the whole world, Sophie. Whatever you decide to do, I'm with you."
Gradually, the entire pack links up to me. Even some of the pups join in. In fact, the only two voices I don't hear are Keith and Cody's. Go figure, I think to myself.
Then I hear my uncle and Elliot get on the line. "I'll fight until my last breath to keep you and Luka safe. Whatever you decide to do, Little Sophie, I'm going to be right by your side, every step of the way," says my uncle.
Hearing this brings a smile to my face. "And what about you, Elliot? what do you want me to do?"
"I want you to cross that border, give Alpha Ace a butt whooping, and save my brother, but that's just me. Oh, and just so you know, if you do give him a butt whooping, I'm going to be watching with a large bag of popcorn and an ice cold Coke and cheering you on all throughout the whole thing."
I let out a laugh. That's Elliot for you, always able to make me or anyone else laugh even when they're feeling down.
My aunt stands up. "It's up to you, Sophie. What do you want to do?"
I only need a second to answer. "Let's make a rescue plan."
