Chapter 22 Training and Instincts

Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega

"Hey Sophie, dry those tears. When I was little and I was feeling down, you know what my playmates at Den House would tell me to do?" He looks straight at me.

"No, what?" I ask, still whimpering.

"They would tell me to howl." Not a second later, Elliot lets out a long howl. Once he's done I let out a howl of my own. When I'm done, I look over towards Luka and Elliot, then a moment later we all howl in sync. The cave comes alive with the sounds of our voices in perfect harmony.

Well, a kind of perfect harmony. Luka did his yelp, bark, whatever, but it still counted for me at least.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wake up as the sunlight is streaming through the mouth of Sapphire Cave. I let out a yawn.

Suddenly, I realize that I'm back in human form, I look over and see Luka curled up, still sleeping in his wolf form right beside me. I stretch out and roll over onto my back, careful that I don't bump into him and wake him up. I sit up and rub the sleepiness from my eyes.

After we finished our grand howl, Luka, Elliot, and I spent the rest of last night playing tag, or running around in the cave. Then Luka got hungry, so we took off out of the cave to go fishing. Elliot and I were the ones that went into the water while Luka, being a non-swimmer, stood on the shore.

We ended up catching three fish, two of which I carried in my mouth. We brought them on shore and laid them down in front of Luka.

Luka had the hardest time choosing a fish to take. Eventually, though, he settled on the biggest one. We took our fish back inside the cave, where we finished them and then fell asleep.

A voice snaps me out of my thoughts. "Sophie are you guys awake, time to come home, I've got breakfast waiting." It's Aunt Sherry on the mind link.

"Alright, I'll wake the boys up and then we'll head back," I reply, still groggy.

Then I turn my head and look down slightly, "Luka, time to wake up, honey. Aunt Sherry's calling us back." I gently stroke Luka's back.

I then feel Luka shift back under my hand as I stroke him. "Gee, Sophie, I'd sure wish you would do this more often."

"I will soon, Baby. I promise."

I then look over my shoulder towards Elliot who's still asleep against one of the cave walls, "Yo, Elliot. It's pack up time. Time to head back home."

Like Luka was previously, Elliot's still in wolf form. He shifts back and looks at me. "Why does he get to wake up with a back rub and I don't?"

I smirk at him. "Luka was closer."

We walk over to the mouth of the cave, "It'll be easier to run back to the house in wolf form." All three of us shift back into our wolves and run back towards home.

When we're almost home I get someone on the mind link. "Hello, Sophie, you there?" asks the voice on the other end.

"Yes, Art, I read you loud and clear, your move," I reply, with a slight smile.

"I'm just linking you to let you know, Andrew and I just finished the training arena and it is now ready to be used."

This means one thing. Today is the day that Luka learns how to fight.

***

My uncle charges towards Luka.

Luka, with a look of shock on his face, gets down as low as he can, and starts to whimper, his ears flattening against his skull as he approaches. My uncle gives him a disappointed look. "Luka, this is the tenth time you've done this."

"I'm sorry, Sir, I don't know what's wrong with me, I just..." My uncle cuts him off.

"Never mind, let's just try again." My uncle turns around and goes back to the other side of the arena. He charges again at Luka, but instead of getting down low, he quickly runs to his side of the arena and attempts to climb up the chain link wall, trying frantically to get out. "And that's the tenth time you've done that," my uncle huffs.

While all of this is going on, Elliot and I are watching from a bench just right outside the arena. Apparently because I'm his mate, I'm not allowed to teach Luka how to fight. My uncle says that's an 'unfair advantage,' so Elliot and I have to watch from out here. After that last attempt, I look over towards Elliot. "Well, at least we know he can dodge an attack if it ever came down to it."

"Yea, but that's not what I was thinking, Sophie."

"What, Elliot?" I arch one of my eyebrows.

"It seems to me that all the years of being beaten down and being the pack chew toy have gotten Luka so mixed up that he's forgotten what a normal werewolf is supposed to do. He just needs to learn how to use his instincts."

"And may I be the one to ask, how are you going to do that?" He then mind links me in reply.

"How do you think? We'll take him on a run through the woods and to the hunting grounds."

Because I'm the Alpha, I decide when Luka's had enough. Elliot gives out a high-pitched whistle, then points at me. "Thank you, Elliot. Okay, uncle, attack training time is over. Elliot and I want to try something else," I say.

Luka's P.OV.

I'm standing outside of the woods of what I heard Sophie call Gamma Village. She is beside me, along with Elliot, and they're just standing there, letting me take in the sights and sounds of the forest. I turn towards Elliot. "How far are we running?" I ask in a slight grumble.

"About fifty miles to the hunting grounds," Elliot grumbles back.

I look straight ahead again, "Okay, in that case I hope I have my running shoes on."

"Hope so." Yelps Elliot.

"Now when we start running, Luka," Sophie tells me. "I don't want you to listen to your fear. I want you to listen to the forest around you and feel the energy from the earth underneath you. And when you do feel it, Elliot and I are going to give you a signal, and that's your cue to close your eyes." I don't know what she means by that, but I give her a nod anyway.

Suddenly, the wolves at my sides take off, and I follow behind. When we enter the forest, I catch up to Sophie. Elliot's out in front. "So what is it you want me to do?" I ask her.

"Just listen to the forest surrounding you."

I try, but all I can hear are the cruel words that I have been called over the years. I feel the pain from all my past beatings come rushing back into my body all at once. I whimper, and flatten my ears and slow my pace. Sophie falls back with me. I'm about to give up. The hurtful words and feelings are almost just too much. But then something cuts in, like static in a radio. It's the sound of a bird chirping, not just any bird, it's a bluebird chirping.

Little by little, the hurtful sounds I had been hearing only a moment before are being drowned out by the forest around me. Birds are chirping in the green tree tops above, woodpeckers tap the trees to get their lunch, and a fox scurries into a bush a few miles away. It's at this time that I notice something else, every time my paws hit the ground I feel the electric tingle of energy, of power. Maybe this is what Sophie was talking about before, I think to myself. The next time my paws hit the ground I don't just see them but I feel them as well, the feeling of them digging into the dirt as they come into contact with the earth.

I look back up towards Sophie, who gives me a nod, then I look up at Elliot, he turns and gives me a nod as well. That must be the signal.

I shut my eyes. There is nothing but darkness, but I can still hear and feel the impact of my paws hitting the ground. I am aware of another sound, faint at first, but slowly rising in cadence with each breath I take. It's my own heartbeat, in the back of my head as I run. I instinctively start to match my breathing and steps to my heart rate. First, I try to match the rhythm of my foot steps to the rhythm of my heartbeats. As I do, I start to feel the warm energy from my feet slowly start to migrate towards my legs. Then, as I match up my breathing, I feel the energy go up to my sides, my neck until, I feel it reach the top of my head.

When I'm sure that my breathing, footsteps, and my heart rate are all pulsating as one, I open my eyes and look around at my surroundings. The sunlight streaming through the tree branches looks much clearer, much brighter. Everything around me seems to be going in slow motion.

"Okay, Luka," Sophie instructs. "Time to show us just how fast you can run."

I take in another deep breath and then rocket forward. I'm not completely sure how fast I'm going because to me everything appears to be going by in slow motion, but I am aware I must be going fast, as I pass by Elliot within a few seconds. I weave in between trees and jump over logs without difficulty, even the larger logs I imagine even Alphas balk at. I see a large rock. I waste no time as I run onto it, jump down, land on the ground with a slight thud, then take off again. On the other side of the rock I see an opening in the trees, my pace quickening even more. I run through it and onto a grassy field.

I sit down and begin to pant. What just happened?

Sophie's P.O.V

I come running full speed out of the trees a full minute after Luka does.

"What was that?" Luka asks, between pants.

I smile and let out a slight chuckle. "Those were your inner instincts. All werewolves are born with them, even Omegas."

"Okay, Sophie, next time you say that, you'll have to change it to, 'Okay, Luka, just show us a fraction of how fast you can run,' or we're not going to be able to keep up with him." Elliot emerges from the trees.

"Sorry, man. Hey, do you guys know where I could get a drink?" asks Luka in a whimper.

I smile as I get up. "Follow me." I lead them over to the Citrine River, it's on the other side of the meadow, as Luka and Elliot bend down to get a drink, I stand watch. As well as this being a good source of drinking water over here, it is also the border between the Ruby Stone pack territory and our own. While I was dating Ace, I could cross the Citrine River when I wished, but now that we are enemies that's no longer the case. If Luka were to cross over to the right side of the river he'd be wolf chow if I couldn't get over there fast enough.

Once Luka's drunk enough, I shift back to my human form and speak up. "Okay. Break time's over. Luka, there are a few things that I want to teach you."

"Is it more attack training?" Luka asks, shifting back.

"No, Luka, much easier than that." We walk to the center of the meadow.

"So, what is it you want to teach me Sophie?"

I turn around to face him. "Firstly, I'm going to teach you how to use the mind link."

I move a few feet away from Luka. "Alright, now close your eyes, and imagine that you and I are standing apart from each other, kind of like we are now."

"Alright," Luka says with a slight nod, and closes his eyes.

"Okay, good. Now imagine a white line coming from your head coming out and then connecting to mine."

"I'll try, Sophie." I watch Luka strain and clinch as he tries to mentally connect the line, then I hear Luka give a frustrated sigh as he opens his eyes again. "Sophie, it's too hard, I can't do it."

I make eye contact with him and smile. "Luka, don't give up, this is only your first time, try again. I know you can do this."

Luka closes his eyes once again and starts trying to connect the ends of the line, while I cross my fingers and hope for the best. Then I feel the buzzing sensation in the back of my head again.

"Hello."

"Sophie, can you hear me?"

When I hear Luka's voice on the other end, a huge smile spreads its way across my face, and my knees tremble with joy.

"Yes, Baby, I can hear your sweet little voice loud and clear," I say with joy in my tone, "Now, Luka, I want you to disconnect the mind link. Just imagine the line disappearing."

It takes him a few minutes but eventually the link goes dead.

"Good," I say. "Now, I want to put what you've just learned to the test. Hey, Elliot, turn around. I want to see if Luka can mind link you."

Elliot turns around.

"Okay, Luka, close your eyes again." He does so with a nod.

I then turn towards Elliot, still in wolf form. "Elliot if you can hear him raise one of your paws. It doesn't matter which one."

It takes Luka a moment. "Elliot, my good buddy, can you hear me?" asks Luka.

I hold my breath. "Luka, like Sophie, I can also hear you, loud and clear." Elliot wags his tail and raises his left paw.

"Good job, Luka. Keep on practicing that, and in no time at all you'll be able to mind link someone without having to work so hard," I say.

"Okay, Sophie, I will. Now, what's next?"

"Well this one's going to be a little tougher, but I want to teach you the first step in how to let your wolf take control."

"But, Sophie, why do we need to let our wolves take control sometimes?"

"We only let them take control if we need them to, Luka. For example, if we've been fighting or running for a few hours straight, and we're getting tired, then we let our wolves take control so that our human selves can get some rest."

"Oh. I get it now. So how do I do it?" Asks Luka

"First, visualize your human face in your mind, then imagine your face slowly metamorphosing into your wolf's. Make sure you leave your eyes open when you do this."

"Sure."

"Also, don't forget to take in a deep breath," I remind him, just standing there watching as Luka starts to practice. It takes a few minutes before Luka's eye start changing from dark brown to yellow, that's as far as Luka gets before he stops and mouths 'Get down.' Elliot and I shift back into our wolves and obey.

Luka's P.O.V.

I was visualizing my human's face changing into my wolf's, like Sophie told me to, when I hear something coming towards the meadow from across the river. I tell Sophie and Elliot to get down. Almost instantly, they crouch down. Taking a quick sniff, I realize what it is and I turn towards Sophie, "Sophie, you and Elliot go back into the tree line and stay hidden. I'll take care of this. Hurry. Go."

They don't ask any questions. They just do what I say and quietly scurry back into the tree line, leaving me alone in the center of the meadow, where I crouch down into the long, thick grass and wait.

After a few minutes of waiting, my target shows himself, a middle-aged buck still in his prime, as he comes up onto the other side of the river. I lay down on my stomach trying to hide so that he doesn't see me and run off. Once he's bending down to start grazing, I get on my hands and knees and start to stalk towards it. I imagine me in my wolf form stalking up on the deer. I feel my heartbeat radiate through my body, through all of the muscles in my body, through every fiber of my being. This is what I was born to do.

Once I'm where I need to be, I sit back on my feet and wait. When I know I'm ready, I reach my arm out and rustle the grass a bit, then I stop and wait some more. The noise causes the buck to lift its head up and walk slowly over towards me.

Perfect, I think to myself.

The buck continues to walk over towards me, while I remain perfectly still and calm.

Not yet, I tell myself.

I pause, as the buck stops about a foot away from me, it's staring right at me. I take in a deep breath as I mentally prepare for what I'm about to do.

I launch myself out of the long grass. As I do, I shift into my wolf. The buck tries to turn around and run, but it's too late. I wrap my jaws tightly around the buck's neck and end its life painlessly.

When I'm sure the buck's dead, I let go of his neck and begin to pant again, and I look down at the deer I just killed. What did I just do?

***

Sophie's P.O,V.

As Luka takes down the buck, Elliot and I can only watch the scene play out. When it's all said and done, I look over towards Elliot and mind link him. "Elliot, is it just me, or did we just watch Luka take down a full-grown buck by himself?"

"I think we just did." Elliot turns and looks at me.

After a moment or two we walk out slowly from the tree line. Luka's sitting down, panting and looking at the buck as we approach him, "What did I do? Did I do something wrong?" Luka whimpers, turning his head around and looking at us.

"Oh, Luka, no, you didn't do anything wrong. It was just your hunting instincts taking control. Every werewolf has their hunting instincts deep down inside of them, and now because of you the pack will have a big feast. Thank you." I gently lick his face.

"Come on, people, let's settle down and eat some of this up." Elliot trots up to the deer.

"You don't have to tell me twice," I yelp.

I give Luka a whole deer leg, "Do my eyes deceive me, or do I have an entire deer leg to myself?" yelps Luka, wagging his tail slightly as he licks his lips.

"Yes, you do, unless I just so happen to take it from you." Elliot slowly approaches us.

"You better not!" I snarl, looking towards him.

"Whoa, whoa, Sophie, I was just kidding." Elliot whines and bows his body in respect.

"You better have been," I grumble under my breath. I let Luka enjoy his deer leg alone and walk over towards the carcass. Elliot gets up and follows. I choose to eat around the middle back of the deer, so that I can see the other side of the river, while Elliot chooses the belly.

I take one last look over to the other side of the river to start eating. As I bend down, the fur along my back stands up on end. I would've sworn I saw a gray wolf's face peering out from the green trees. I look back up, but see nothing.
