Chapter 21 The Moon at Its Fullest

Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega

"Okay, the last candle is in our room, so I think it's time for me and Luka to hit the hay," I say, as Luka and I step out of the bunker. We say goodnight to each other, then Luka and I head upstairs for the night.

As soon as we enter, Luka lays down on his side of the bed, I walk over to my bedside table and do the same thing. "Dear God or Goddess, please cleanse the space where we've placed this sage scented candle," I repeat.

I take my Alpha uniform off and slip into bed with him. "Goodnight, Luka."

"Goodnight...Sophie." Luka responds with a yawn, then we both fall asleep as the crisp scent of sage starts to fill the air.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wake up and my head feels fuzzy. Normally if I told someone this, they'd suspect that I was buzzed from the night before, but this time it's because the full moon is upon us tonight. I sit up on my side of the bed and rub the sleepiness from my eyes. As I do, I look towards the closed bedroom door. My nose is going in overdrive smelling all the smells around the house, in search of what my wolf wants. Red meat.

I quietly open the door, and step through the doorway. But as I do, I turn around and just stare at Luka, sleeping there, oh so peacefully. I smile. Enjoy it while you can Luka, enjoy it while you can, I think to myself, as I gently shut the door.

I run calmly down the staircase and into the big kitchen where Greg is preparing something. I waste little time and walk over to the meat freezer. When I open it up, I'm surprised to find it totally bare, not a crumb in sight. I look over my shoulder.

"Hey, Greg, are we out of meat?"

"What?" he asks, sounding stunned.

"I've just checked in the freezer and it's completely empty." I step aside so that Greg can see for himself.

Greg looks inside the freezer, "It seems as though we are."

"Don't worry, I'll go to the store and get some more," I say.

Oh, no, Sophie you don't have t..." I cut him off.

"No need to say, I'd be happy to go, and it will give me a chance to get out of the house," I assure him.

"Are you sure you want to go? it is the full moon, after all," says Greg, as I start to walk out of the kitchen.

"I've made up my mind, Greg, but thanks for asking. And when you get finished with whatever it is you're fixing, go home to your new mate, I'm sure that new little girl of yours is practically bouncing off the walls."

As I'm walking past the staircase on my way towards the front door, I hear the faint pitter patter of little feet coming down the stairs, I stop and look up. Luka's sleepy looking form comes down a moment later, still only able to hold onto the bottom of the railing. "Sophie, do you have anything for full moon sickness? My head and hands are throbbing like mad."

"Sorry, honey, we're all out of red meat. I was just on my way to the store to get some more," I say.

"Well, if you would, could you tie my shoes so that I can come with you? I don't want to be here alone."

"Well, sure I can, come over here." I motion for him to follow me over to the front door. Luka sits down by the front door and I sit down in front of him so that I can tie his shoes. Suddenly, he chuckles, "What's so funny, Luka?" I ask him.

"Oh, nothing, I was just wondering... Why do we feel this way before a full moon?"

"It's the effect that the full moon has on our blood. Even though you can't see it yet, the full moon has the power to make our blood change, slowly at first. and once it's overhead, all at once." I finish tying his shoes. Luka lets out a huff. "Come on, Sophie, do you have anything to help the throbbing?"

"Do you want to know what helps?" I reply, as I stand back up.

"Yes, tell me. I'll do anything." Luka gets up. I open up the door and we both step outside.

"Do you want to know one of the best ways to get rid of full moon sickness? Run." I take off towards the store, Luka pauses for a moment, then follows behind.

We make it to the store in record time, around ten minutes. By then the both of us are out of breath. "Better?" I ask, panting.

"Much...better," he replies, in between pants.

"Come on, Luka, let's go inside," I say, after we've caught our breath.

We head for the meat section, all the while talking about random things. Some people wave at us as we walk by. Others say hi, or come and talk to us for a minute, before going their way, and some people give us things that they've already bought for us because they saw us walk by.

When we're almost there, Luka speaks up. "I know you haven't told me, and since this is the perfect day, I thought I'd ask. Sophie, how did you first shift?"

I smile a little. "It was a few nights after my tenth birthday. I was sitting on my window sill while my window was wide open. I was looking around, while my legs dangled down outside the window, and a warm breeze blew by me. It was a warm night. I remember I was thinking about what would happen when I finally shifted, sure I could connect with my wolf from time to time but it wasn't that easy for me back then.

"Suddenly, there was a change in the wind. The wind started to howl and became colder, much faster. My body started to tremble, though I didn't know why. I got the urge to jump out, so that's what I did. As I jumped, I felt my bones shatter all at once and shift into my wolf. It didn't hurt, well for me at least. It felt like a fly landing on me.

"By the time I landed on the ground, I was on all four paws. I took off running. I got the feeling I was supposed to be looking for something, but I didn't know what. For hours, I searched through the dark night, until my parents found me."

Luka is still looking at me. "Did you ever find what you were supposed to be looking for?"

I shake my head. "No, I haven't. And I still don't know what it is."

When we get over to the meat section, it's just like my freezer at home, totally bare. "Oh darn, they're out of meat as well, we'll have to go somewhere else," Luka says, sounding a little worried.

I chuckle slightly, "Luka, if you want to know anything about me it's this, I usually always have something up my sleeve," I say, as I motion him to follow me. I walk over to the intercom, the one that's over by the doors that lead to the stock room, and press the little red button.

"Hello" a voice answers on the other end.

I smile because I already know who it is. "Yes. Hi. Code word, special delivery."

In less than a minute the doors open and a man with jet black hair and brown eyes comes out. "Morning, Alpha Sophie." He's carrying a cardboard box filled with meat.

"Morning, Sam. Has my delivery come in?" I ask him.

"Yes, this is it."

Luka looks at the box and then at us. "Not to sound rude or anything, but Sophie, this one box isn't going to fill the freezer all by itself, let alone both of our stomachs."

"Luka, he's messing with you. This is actually one box of it, isn't that right, Sam?" I ask him, playfully.

Sam chuckles slightly. "Yea, she's right, there's still a thousand pounds to come."

Luka's eyes are wide. "One. Thousand. Pounds."

"Yep. I knew we were running low, so I placed an order, and I like to buy all of my food in bulk. So, Luka, do you think we'll have enough meat now?" I ask him, playfully.

"We'll definitely have enough meat now, yes," says Luka.

'So, you're going to be the new Alpha," says Sam, as he looks towards Luka.

"He will be as soon as he turns eighteen, and as soon as we teach him how to be an Alpha," I reply.

'I bet you're excited about the full moon tonight."

"I would be if my head and hands weren't throbbing like crazy, and if our meat freezer wasn't empty," Luka replies, with his head lowered.

"Is that right? Hang on a second. I'll be right back." Sam walks back into the stock room, taking the box of meat with him. Soon he comes back with two raw, red deboned steaks with a clean wet rag draped over his left arm. "Come and get them Alpha, they're on the house." Sam offers us the steaks. We eat them ravenously.

The fuzziness and throbbing disappears almost instantly. "Hopefully, that will last you two long enough to get back to your house without having any problems," Sam says, as I take the rag from him.

"Thank you, Sam. You didn't have to do that, you know," I say, as I wipe my hands off, then hand the rag over to Luka so that he can do the same.

"No need for thanks. It was my pleasure. Now, you two, go on home and we'll deliver the rest of the meat to your house." Sam takes the rag from Luka and walks back into the stock room.

"Come on, Luka. Let's pay for this stuff and get back home," I say, as I turn the shopping cart to go back up the aisle.

"Right behind you." Luka follows behind me.

Luka got three more packets of Gummy-Bears, and two cartons of chocolate milk. I got a loaf of French bread and an assortment of many other things. As well as that, I also paid that tab that Faya and Maloney left when they bought Luka's stuff.

Now we're back it the house, chowing down on some red meat. "That was pretty brave what you did last night," I say slowly, finishing my fifty pounds of meat.

"What?" Luka looks up from his plate.

"You were afraid of the bunker. Still, you went down with me."

"I couldn't let you go down there by yourself, even if it was my worst nightmare. I thought if I had you by my side it would give me the courage to face it, and I was right. It did," Luka says.

A slight blush appears on my face just knowing that I give him courage. "It's dusk, Luka. Time to head out for the night." I look out the window and stand up.

"Are you sure we've eaten enough meat to make it through the night?" Luka asks, getting up from the table himself.

"Luka, you've just finished fifty pounds of meat yourself. Between us, we just ate a hundred pounds of meat. I think we'll be okay, and if we do get hungry during the night we can always go fishing or hunt any small animals that cross our path. Trust me, Luka, we'll be fine." I make a start for the front door.

"Okay, Sophie, if you say so."

"Let's go."

We take off. As we run up the drive way, I look a few doors up from me and see my uncle leaving his house. We stop at the top of the drive way. My uncle walks towards us. "Hey, Little Sophie, you ready?" he wraps his arms tightly around me.

"I'm always ready for this time of the month, Uncle," I reply, with a smile on my face.

"How about you, are you ready?" My uncle asks as he turns towards Luka.

"As ready as I'll ever be, Sir," Luka quips.

"Alright. Then let's do this," I say.

"Easy there, Sophie. Before we can get to the Northern Shore, we need to stop by the pack hospital," my uncle reminds me.

"Why do we need to stop by the hospital?" I ask.

"Your aunt is at work, and I told her we'd come by and see her before we headed out."

"Well, guys, what are we waiting for?" asks Luka, who is now a few feet up the road from us.

"Hey, Luka, wait for us," I say with a smile, as my uncle and I take off after him. Luka streaks down the street, with us in hot pursuit.

Luka gets to the pack hospital first, followed closely by my uncle and I. My aunt is outside the hospital, waiting for us. "Hey, Aunt Sherry, sorry we're late," I say, almost completely out of breath from running.

"Hi, you guys. Is there any particular reason you guys are out of breath?"

"Your future son in law, I guess. He's a real speed demon," replies my uncle. We all die laughing.

"Have fun on this full moon, and keep you and your new mate safe while you're at it. Can you do that, Sophie?" she asks.

I just smile at her, "I must, it's an Alpha's duty." I throw my hands around Aunt Sherry's neck in a sweet hug.

She turns to Luka, "Luka, no matter how brightly the stars shine tonight, make your personal star the brightest of all. Also, I want you and Sophie to stay safe out there, and Luka, if trouble does arise, I want you to run as fast as you can away from that beach, okay?"

"Understood, Aunt Sherry," Luka responds, with a nod.

"Good, now go have some fun on that beach." My Aunt Sherry gives my mate a sweet kiss on the cheek. She then walks over to my uncle, "No matter what happens tonight promise me you'll protect the pack, the two included."

"Don't worry, my Dear," my uncle replies.

"And make sure to stay safe yourself," says my aunt.

"Don't worry, Darling, I will." My uncle pulls my aunt in for a hug, and then gives her a kiss as they break apart. "I'll try to mind link you if I get the chance."

"That'll be great if you could. Now you three better get going. The shift will be happening soon."

"Well, you heard the lady. Let's get going," I say, with excitement in my voice. The other two nod and then we race off. In the background, I hear my Aunt say very quietly, "stay safe."

"We will! Thanks, Aunt Sherry," I yell back.

When we get to the divided part that separates the main part of the territory from the forest, we slow to a stop. "Are we running in wolf form?" Luka asks, as he gets ready to shift.

I shake my head, "No, we're just going to use wolf speed. Come on. This way." I motioning for them to follow me into the woods. Instead of going straight through like I did the other day, I hang a left as the path is clear, free from any blockages or anything of that sort. I look back behind me and see that Luka's at the back of the pack. "Luka, hold on. We're almost there."

"I'm trying Sophie, I'm trying," Luka says, breathing heavily.

We get out of the forest and we race across the meeting valley, but as we get to the thin line of trees that line the northern shore, I stop and turn around. "This is as far as you can go, uncle. Do you think you can keep the pack in the meeting valley?"

"Can do, Sophie."

"I know you can do it. Like my aunt told you before, keep the pack and yourself safe," I say, as I wrap my arms tightly around my Uncle's neck.

"Don't worry, Pumpkin, I will. Have a good shift."

"I will." I turn around.

As we walk closer and closer to the other side of the tree line, sweet memories start flooding back to me. Without thinking about it, I smile. Luka looks at me funny. "Sophie, what's with the smile?"

"Oh, it's nothing, well its ju... I'll tell you when we get on the beach."

"Sounds like a plan." We continue to walk through the trees.

When we walk onto the beach, the sound of the rocks crackling under our feet fills my body with happiness. In the middle of the beach, I take in a deep breath and begin. "This was the place where I spent my first full moon shift. It was a few weeks after my first official shift, and I didn't want to spend my shift with the rest of the pack because I was the shy type as a young girl. Between you and me, I was also a little bit self-conscious about my back-then small wolf. So I shifted in secret and ran until I found this shore. So yea, there's a lot of memories for me on this stretch of shore line."

I'm about to say more when I hear rustling in the trees followed by a voice. I look over my shoulder. "Hey, Alpha Sophie, wow that was a cool story." Elliot pops out from the other side of the trees and walks over towards us.

"Hey, Elliot," Luka says happily. "Hey, Luka," Elliot responds as he walks up to Luka, and they do their secret hand shake they've created in the past day and a half.

"Elliot! What're you doing here?" The two brothers finish their hand shake.

"Come on, Sophie, did you really think I would spend this full moon shift without my new best friend?"

"Did you follow us?" I ask Elliot.

"Yes, why are you asking Alpha?"

"It's just, wow... if you were, we didn't hear you following us. Good job."

"Thanks."

"Sophie, can Elliot stay? Please, three's better than two." Luka hugs Elliot tight.

I just smile at the both of them. "Sure, I don't see why not." All three of us look out towards the water.

It's dark now, and the moon's reflection, in all its full glory, is shining off the black water. We hold hands together. "Alright, if anyone's feeling the shift, I want you to speak up."

"I can feel it," says Luka, only a second later. He's breathing heavily, and he's got his hand balled up into a tight fist. His eyes are turning to his wolf's honey colored ones. I feel Luka let go of my hand, then I hear a light whimper. I look and see that Luka's on all four paws, just looking up at me.

I feel my shift coming on, on one side of my body it feels to me as if someone has poured liquid fire into my veins, while on the other side they've poured liquid ice in my veins, and then in my chest, at the very center of my soul, they combine as one. Calmly getting down on my hands and knees, I take a deep breath in and then let it out slowly, and in no time at all I'm on four paws myself.

As soon as I shift into my wolf, Luka gets down low and tries to lick my face. "There's no need for that, Luka. You don't have to do this anymore" I whimper as I bend down slightly and rub his nose against mine.

"I know, but I can't help it," Luka yelps.

I gently nudge Luka with my shoulder. He responds by doing the same.

"Hey guys, don't forget about me," Elliot barks. We were concentrating so hard that we didn't see Elliot shift. His brindled dark beige wolf would be the hardest to see with the naked eye, but we can see him just fine.

"Wouldn't dream of it, Elliot," I bark back.

When we're all sitting down together, I let out a loud, long howl and the night comes alive with howls and songs by our fellow pack mates, our family.

After a moment of silence, Elliot speaks up. "Okay, now that we've shifted, what do we do now, Sophie?"

"Hmmmmmmm..." I think with my head cocked to one side. "I've got it. There's something I want to show you two. Follow me." I stand up and take off, Luka and Elliot in toe. I take then to the far end of the shore, where it curls to the left slightly around the water's edge. I stop at the mouth of a large cave.

Luka flattens his ears at the first sight of it and whimpers. "What is this place, Sophie?" His ears are down.

"Welcome to Sapphire Cave, my secret spot when I was a pup." I give a slight grumble.

"I'll lead on. You stay behind me and comfort Luka." It's Elliot, behind us.

"Okay, Elliot, lead on," I commend him.

Elliot goes in and disappears into the mouth of the cave. I hear his nails click on the hard cave floor as he walks. A moment later, I turn towards Luka. "Come on, Luka, don't be scared. Elliot and I will be right there with you."

"Okay So-ph.-i.e..." whimpers Luka, visibly trembling.

I walk through the mouth of the cave, Luka clinging to my side like glue. I feel the hard stone floor hit my feet. It feels so good to be back here after a good long while, I think to myself.

"Sophie, is it bad if I see a white light in front of us?" Luka asks, cocking his head over to the side a bit.

"No. In fact, that's one of my favorite things about this cave."

As we walk to the back of the cave, Luka looks up.

"Wow." Is all he can bark as he sees the clear crystal quartz hanging from the ceiling of the cave and the clusters of amethyst and rose quarts circled all around them.

Elliot who's running around stops as we come into the circle of light, "Sophie this is amazing" Elliot slightly howls, his howl echoes off the walls of the cave.

"No kidding Elliot, this place is spectacular Sophie" Yelps Luka.

I start to walk over to one of the cave walls, "Thank you, but for me, I love this cave for more than just its inner beauty" I whimper with my head lowered staring at a dark purple piece of amethyst cluster all by itself in the wall.

"Why is that Sophie" the two boys both ask in sync as they come over and sit down in front of me.

"This is the place that I'd hide from my oldest brother Mike when we'd play hide and seek, or tag. This was our spot, the place where we would go if we wanted to talk but since he and my other brother Danny have died I've..."I trail of whimpering thinking about my two brothers. Luka then lays down and crawls on his stomach over to me.

"Hey Sophie dry those tears, when I was little and I was feeling down, you know what my playmates at Den House would tell me to do?" He whines looking straight at me.

"No, what?" I ask still whimpering.

"They would tell me to howl" Luka replies in a yelp, and not a second later Elliot let's out a long howl. Once he's done I let out a howl of my own, when I'm done I look over towards Luka and then Elliot and then a moment later we all howl in sync, well kind of, Luka did his yelp, bark, but it still counted for me at least, the cave comes alive with the sounds of three voices, three wolves, who're in perfect harmony with each other.
