Chapter 20 What To Do
Previously, on His Alpha Her Omega
"So Aunt Sherry, what do you think we should use to calm him down?" I ask, looking towards her as we go up.
"Well, let's see..." She pauses to think about it for a second, "How about a bubble bath?"
"I bet that'll work," I say.
As we step out of the bunker, Luka looks around. I can't help but think that he's happy to be out of the darkness once again and back into the light.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I spent the next hour and a half with my aunt and Luka in the bathroom. My aunt wouldn't let me inside until Luka was fully submerged in bubbles, which I could understand. Once inside the bathroom, I told him about the belt I had found. He started to freak out slightly, but once I told him that I wasn't going to use it on him and that I had it tucked away, he relaxed.
No sooner had Luka got out of the bath, and started to put on his new clothes, there was a knock at the door. It was Debby. She was carrying a big bowl of gummy-bears and a carton of chocolate milk for Luka.
I swear his eyes nearly popped out of his head.
Greg has prepared a special feast, like he always does the night before the full moon, as a way to show our thanks to whatever God or Goddess is up there. It's like we have Thanksgiving every month of the year.
Suddenly I'm snapped out of my thoughts. "Sophie," my aunt calls.
"Ma'am?" I ask as I look towards her.
"Debby was talking to you and you didn't answer."
"Oh I'm sorry, what Debby?" I ask, turning towards her.
"Oh, I was just wondering what you and Luka were going to do for the full moon," she replies.
"Well, we haven't decided yet," I say. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Luka clean off his mouth with his napkin.
"Well, I can tell you one thing," he says, "I'm not going to spend it with the rest of the pack. I've been used as a real life punching bag once in my life and I don't ever want to go back there again, ever."
"I understand your concern. Don't worry, we won't be with the pack if you don't want to be." I reach out to hold his hand. He gently takes it.
My uncle speaks up. "I would suggest they spend the full moon in the bunker. There's enough room for them to play around in and not to mention it'll be safer."
My aunt responds by taking her face out of her chicken leg and looking at him, "I don't think that's wise, dear. Did you see how Luka reacted after being in there for only a few minutes. I don't want to think about what he'd do if he was down there for a whole night." She sounds concerned.
"Well, they may have no other choice on the matter," says my uncle, scowling at her.
"Yea, well, I know that Sophie won't have Luka in a situation that scares him," says Aunt Sherry as she scowls back at him, only harder. Knowing this will take a while, I start to zone out.
I try to think of somewhere that Luka and I can shift that has wide open spaces to play around in, stuff to do, and things to see, so we don't get bored, but also is close enough to the pack so that I can go to them if trouble arises.
When it finally comes to me, I'm stunned. Why didn't I think of it before? Why didn't they think of it before? It's the perfect place to shift. I come out of my thoughts. By this point my aunt and uncle are arguing back and forth with each other, and Luka's giving me the 'Help me' look.
I try to get their attention, "Hey, hello... Uh, guys?" I call out, but they don't respond. Finally, I take a deep breath, let my wolf take semi control, and let out a quick, loud howl. They both turn towards me. "Thank you. Okay, first of all, you two are scaring Luka and secondly, I think I know the perfect place to shift, the northern shore, and it's perfect," I say to the both of them.
"Yea, I think that'll work." My uncle gives Aunt Sherry an apologetic look, and she smiles at him in forgiveness.
The hour ticks by and pretty soon the meal starts winding down, when suddenly my uncle speaks up from the silence, "Luka, since you're going to be the Alpha of the pack, there's something I need to discuss with you."
"What is it?" Asks Luka.
"It's about Alpha training."
"What's Alpha training?" Luka asks him.
"It's when an instructor from the pack in question will take the young Alpha for a two-year hike to gain the strength and the skills they need to take their place as Alpha when they turn eighteen. The place, well for us at least, is Bloodstone Canyon. It's in between the Ruby Stone pack grounds and our own.
"Oh, and Luka, before you say yes to this, there's a catch. I must tell you, if you agree to this, during those next two years you will not have any contact with your mate or your pack, that is the only catch. So what'll it be, Luka? Are you willing to take the plunge?"
Luka's about to reply when my aunt hastily cuts him off. "He can't dear. Alpha training is for born Alphas only, I've checked and he isn't no Alpha." She turns toward Luka. "No offence," she adds, sounding slightly apologetic.
"None taken, I've been called worse," he mumbles.
Hearing this comment and knowing what it means, I let out a light growl. Luka turns back towards my uncle. "Thanks for the offer, Sir, but I don't think I'm strong enough, besides I can't leave Sophie now. I just met her." This last bit makes my heart skip a beat.
"I understand perfectly, son," my uncle replies.
Before we know it, we're cleaning up the kitchen. As I'm putting my plate in the sink, I suddenly feel heavy. This house feels cold and still now. In my mind's eye, I can see the belt in our bedroom, the one that my father used to whip, burn, and scar Luka, possibly for life. I can see the bunker that he kept Luka in when he was finished.
I wish there was some way I could get this feeling to go away.
A thought comes to me. I put my dishes down and race upstairs.
I walk back into our room and head straight for my closet, There's no question about it, I have to wear this once I find it. I dig, dig, and dig until I've found it, my Alpha uniform. I take it out of my closet and look at it. It's a fancy looking black jacket with sixteen 14-karat gold buttons. I slip it on and button it up, and put on my white cotton gloves.
This is not the one my dad or my brothers would've used, by the way. When I became Alpha, I had to get one of my own. The one my dad had was just too big, but I don't care, I like mine anyway. Then I walk over to my dresser and put my blond hair into a neat bun.
I open the drawer and pull out the belt for the last time, the last thing I do is pull out a sage scented candle and place it on my bedside table. All set, I think to myself, as I walk out of our room.
When I come walking down the staircase, all eyes are on me. They know that when I'm dressed like this, that I mean business.
"Sophie, what is it?" My uncle asks me, since he's my right hand wolf, well, besides Luka.
"If y'all want to, won't you please join me for a burning and cleansing ceremony?" I ask them.
"On what?" My aunt asked me.
"The belt, the bunker, and our room," I reply to her.
"Alright, count us in. I'll go get the wood for the fire. Debby, Elliot, Luka, stay here until we're ready." My uncle heads for the back door.
"And I'll put a sage scented candle in the bunker while he's doing that," my aunt quips, as she walks towards the staircase that leads up to our room.
"Wait a minute. I thought sage was bad for us," Luka says, as he looks towards me.
I let out a chuckle before responding, "Luka, that's only in the movies. In the movies, werewolves are created by witches, potions, and black magic. In real life, since the power is in our blood, and not cursed by magic, most of the movie weaknesses are a myth. Pretty much the only things that affect us are wolfsbane and silver."
We all stand there for a while, until my uncle walks back in and tells us everything is ready. My aunt joins us. I let everyone walk out into the backyard before me. I turn back towards Luka. "Are you ready?" I ask him.
"Ready when you are," Luka replies. After a few moments of preparation, we step out together. The night air is warm and still. Everyone's gathered around the fire, waiting for me. I stare at the flames for a moment, the orange-red flames that seem to reach up into the darkness of night.
I shake my head, remove the belt from its plastic bag, and begin.
"Darkness has fallen on this land, our home," I start to say, as I step forward towards the fire. Luka follows. The cotton gloves protect my hands from the silver's fierce burn. "So we ask for your help, God or Goddess, take the darkness and badness from this belt and turn it into light and all things that are good."
I walk up, pause for a moment, then toss the belt into the fire. I take a step back from the searing heat of the flames.
The night comes alive with a loud chorus of snaps and crackles. I look towards Luka. His face is lit orange by the fire, and his eyes are looking straight ahead at the dancing flames.
Once the fire has calmed down, I speak up. "Alright. There's one last thing we need to do, a final blessing."
All of my friends and loved ones circle around the fire, and we all hold hands, I hold onto Luka's hand. He looks at me, a bit unsure. I smile at him, 'Don't worry, you'll know what to do,' I mouth to him. He turns back and we all howl in sync, then we stop. Luka's howl sounds like a mixture of a bark and a yelp.
"Well, that was embarrassing," my uncle says playfully. Luka looks at me, embarrassed, and I smile at him.
"Don't worry, my mate, your howl will come when you need it the most," I tell him. Luka smiles back at me and continues his howl, as do we all.
After a while, all of us walk back inside, leaving the fire to burn out on its own. We make a beeline for the staircase, but I stop and turn around as I reach the first step. "With all due respect, everyone, I would like to do the last two by myself," I say, as I open the bunker. I'm about to step in, when I hear Luka's voice from behind me.
"Sophie, you don't have to do this by yourself. I'm coming down with you."
Luka and I walk back down the stairs, where we find a small brown table with a sage scented candle and a lighter waiting for the both of us.
"Come on, let's do this." I lead Luka over to the table. I hold the lighter above the candle and begin to speak. "Dear God or Goddess, please cleanse the space where we've placed this sage scented candle."
I fire up the lighter, then I take in and hold in a breath as I light the wick, and then I let it out when I put the lighter down. "Come on, let's go," I say to Luka as I turn around, taking the lighter with me.
"Okay, the last candle is in our room, so I think it's time for me and Luka to hit the hay," I say, as Luka and I step out of the bunker. We say goodnight to each other, then Luka and I head upstairs for the night.
As soon as we enter, Luka lays down on his side of the bed, I walk over to my bedside table and do the same thing. "Dear God or Goddess, please cleanse the space where we've placed this sage scented candle," I repeat.
I take my Alpha uniform off and slip into bed with him. "Goodnight, Luka."
"Goodnight...Sophie." Luka responds with a yawn, then we both fall asleep as the crisp scent of sage starts to fill the air.
