Chapter 17 Gummy-bears and Yip-nip
Previously, on His alpha her omega
"Oh, this is Keith and Cody Grim, and they'll be working here for a while along with Elliot Deleon Vizzuno," I reply, pointing back to the three boys standing behind me.
"Of course you can. Come on in." Debby opens the door wider and we all step inside.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the boys enter the corridor, Debby pulls me aside. "You're here for something else, right?
"Well, your senses are not lying," I reply. "My mate spent part of his childhood here, and I would like to see if I can find his records here so that I can find out as much about him, if I can, please."
"Heather, Heather!" She calls out as we walk into the living room/receptionist area. "Ma'am," a voice responds as a young lady with long straight brown hair, silver eyes, and a ruddy complexion walks into the room. Cody's dark brown eyes go wide.
"I found her," he says as he strides across the room to the girl called Heather. "Hi. I'm Cody Grim, and it's very nice to meet you," Cody says to Heather.
"I'm Heather Steal, and it's very nice to meet you as well." She holds her hand out and Cody shakes it.
"Heather. Why don't you take your new mate, Keith, and Elliot to get ready for work, while I'm tending to the Alpha?" Debby says to Heather.
"Can do. Come on boys, let's go," she says, motioning the three boys to follow her down a long hallway. A few seconds later, I hear Keith ask, "So do you have a sister?" followed by an "Ouch", meaning Cody must've slapped him on the head, hard. I smile a little.
"Alpha, over here," Debby calls to me sitting down at her desk. I walk over, motioning Luka to follow me, and like always, he does.
"Debby, just before you start I just want to let you know, we don't know his last name, we only know his first, is that okay?" I ask her as the two of us walk over to her desk.
"That's okay, Alpha, we only go by first names here anyway." She pauses for a second to type on her computer. "Alright, what's his name?" She asks.
"It's Luka," Luka says. Debbie's face turns as white as a sheet.
She gasps. "What did you just say?" Debby asks with the look of both shock and amazement clearly written on her face.
"His name is Luka. I don't know anything else about him," I reply.
"I..." She pauses to take in a shallow breath. "We need to go to my office. We can talk there, and I'll explain everything," Debby says calmly, getting up from her leather office chair.
This is either really good or really bad. Debby only pulls me to her office when she wants to talk to me about one of the kids, good or bad, but it's almost always bad. I turn towards Luka. "Did you do something wrong while you were here?" I ask, slightly arching one of my eyebrows.
Luka turns his head towards me. "Not that I know of," he replies in a whisper, sounding a bit worried.
Debby leads us down the long, dimly lit hallway just to the left of her desk, instead of to the right, were Elliot, Keith, Cody, and Heather went. A long silence takes hold of us as we continue to walk down the hallway. It's then that I notice something strange. Every few seconds Debby looks over her shoulder towards Luka, like she's scared that he's going to disappear any second. When we're down far enough, she unlocks the office door and we all step in.
Once I'm inside, I look around. Not much has changed since the last time I was in here, if anything at all. The cream colored walls are alive with hand drawn and hand painted pieces of artwork, some brightly colored and some that are... not so much. The bookshelves along the two walls on either side of us are just loaded upon loaded with books, some of them or new releases and some of them are classics. I make a mental note to get Debby a new bookcase for Christmas.
When I hear Debby close the door, I open my mouth to speak, but close it when she does another strange thing. She walks over to Luka, gets down on her knees and holds him close and then begins to nuzzle his face, neck and cheek. I should growl at her, but I can't find the urge to do so, it's then that I realize that I've seen the same motions before. They're the same motions that a mother wolf will use to comfort her pups in both human, and wolf form. After a few more seconds of this, Debby pulls away from Luka, but just slightly so she still has her hands on both of his shoulders. "Honey, the next morning after your party when you didn't come down for breakfast, I went to check on you and you were gone, what happened?" she asks him, as she gently sweeps a strand of Luka's hair out of his face and behind his ear.
"Someone took me, mamma," Luka replies with a sadness in his voice.
"We know, or at least that was what we thought, honey," Debby says as she taps Luka's nose with her ring finger.
As Debby stands back up, I give her and Luka a confused look. "Are you his mother, Debby?"
She shakes her head. "No, I'm not, but I almost was, I was Luka's full time caretaker while he was here at Den House." Debby motions for us to sit down at her dark brown desk, and like obedient kids, we do so.
"So. What have you been up to in the past six years that you've been gone, Lukie?" Debby asks him, sitting down across the desk from us.
I cover my hand over my mouth, trying hard to keep from laughing. "Lukie?" I ask him playfully as I turn towards him.
"Mom," Luka whines like a little kid, then he turns towards me. "Sophie, Lukie was my old nickname around here."
"I think it's cute," I say.
"Well, mom. I spent the first three years in what I considered to be a living nightmare, and then I have spent the last three years of my life in freedom, but as the Omega, the pack's own real life punching bag. Then just a few days ago I met Sophie," Luka replies.
"Oh, Luka. I'm so sorry, I wish I could've been there for you when you needed me the most..." Debby says, with a look of sadness on her face.
I speak up, trying to lighten up the mood. "Anyways, Debby, what was Luka like as a kid?" .
"I'll gladly tell you in a second, but first, let me pull up and print out his records for you to look over." Debby opens up the black laptop in between us.
As Debby starts typing away on her laptop, I turn towards Luka, and it's then I realize that for the first time in a good while, his body is completely and totally relaxed. The sound of the printer doing its thing snaps me out of my thoughts and as I turn back towards Debby, two pieces of paper gently slide out of the mouth of the machine. Debby picks them up and is about to hand them over to me when her hand stops, leaving me hanging. "What is it?" I ask her.
"I can't give you these until you close your eyes first." Debby replies.
"Why?" I ask.
"Just do it, trust me Sophie, you'll see why when you reopen them again," she replies. I do as she says and close my eyes. I can feel her put the papers in my hand then she waits a few seconds before speaking.
"Okay... Now."
I take in another shallow breath before I slowly open my eyes. I put my hand over my mouth again.
If America was having a cutest baby picture contest with over a billion entries, and the baby picture I'm looking at right now was registered, I'm pretty sure Luka's would win hands down. The picture mostly consists of a baby Luka, his thick head of brown hair covered by a baby blue baby cap. His whitish toned baby skin which looks so soft, I just want to touch it. His little mouth is formed into a big smile, revealing an empty mouth of just gums and a bit of saliva, but the thing that stands out at me from anywhere else, Luka's eyes. Those mouth-watering dark brown eyes that look so full of happiness, so full of joy. Those eyes that seem to look through the paper and into my soul, I almost don't want to look away.
"Aww" I say, finally breaking out of my trance.
"Yeah, I know. Luka was so cute as a baby. When he was a new-born, he was a bottomless pit for food, he would eat and eat and eat until I had to pull the bottle away eventually so that he didn't burst his already full stomach, then afterwards, he would fall back to sleep. Luka ended up becoming the most lovable, the most caring, and the most helpful child at Den House. He was, I think, six by this point. When a smaller kid needed something off a higher shelf or needed help getting their breakfast, Luka would find a way to help in the best way that he could. Even when it came to changing a baby's diaper, if I needed help for anything he be at my side in a second, he was such a good..." Debby trails off as I'm looking over the pieces of paper in my hand, out of the corner of my eye I see Luka rub his eyes a bit.
"You sleepy, Luka?" I ask, turning back towards him yet again.
"Just a... bit." Luka replies back with a yawn.
"Oh, and speaking of being sleepy. Hey Luka come with me, there's something I want to show you. Sophie, you come too," says Debby, getting up from her chair.
Luka and I both get up from our chairs and follow her out of the Office. We walk up to the elevator and we all board, the doors then close.
"Going up," Luka says as we start to feel the floor vibrate underneath us," I just look at him and smile... The doors then open and we step out onto the second floor, Debby then turns and leads us up the long hallway of endless bedrooms.
When we come to room 219 Debby stops and turns towards Luka, "Go on Luka. You open the door."
Luka walks towards the door. Hung on the door is a little wooden plank with what looks to be two little green bushes painted on the top of it one on each side, and in the middle of it painted in dark green letters are the words 'Luka's room'. Luka gasps and takes a hold of the silver handle and opens the green bedroom door.
Luka steps inside the room and holds the bedroom door open for us. When we step inside the room, my mouth flies open when I realize what the theme of Luka's bedroom is. The theme is Gummy-bears; the plain white walls are covered in Gummy-bear posters, he has Gummy-bear pencils, and even a Gummy-bear lamp on the small desk on the right side of his room. Tons and tons of other Gummy-bear themed stuff are scattered about, and on the other end of his white bedside table, the side pointing away from his bed, guess what he's got, a large glass bowl filled to the brim with, that's right, Gummy-bears.
Luka walks over towards the bowl, but as he's about to grab a bear, he hesitates. "It's okay, Luka, they're fresh. We've changed them out every week now ever since you were taken, just in case you did come back," says Debby, still standing in the doorway. Luka takes a handful of the tiny, colorful, cute bears, sits down on his bed and pops one of the bears into his mouth, then he pats the space right beside him. "Well. I'll leave you two alone for a while, holler or mind link me if you need anything." Debby gently closes the door.
"We will, thanks, Debby," I say as I look towards the door. I grab a handful of Gummy-bears myself and sit down right beside him, I look towards Luka, he seems to have that look that all guys have when they're thinking, I smile. "What?" I ask him.
"What, what?" He asks back to me.
"What are you thinking about?" I ask Luka.
"Oh, that," he trails off, taking in a shallow breath before continuing, "I was just thinking back to that night six years ago. I was sitting in this same spot, my hot chocolate was on my table. I took a huge gulp thinking that it was going to be like any other normal night, it ended up becoming my own personal Hades," He replies.
A light bulb goes off in my head. "Luka, can I ask you something about the hot chocolate you had on that night?" I ask, turning my head towards him.
"Oh. Sure, Sophie, what is it?" Luka asks.
"When you first told us about your past a few nights ago,you said you remembered it smelling a lot sweeter, what did you mean by that? Did you mean that someone added an extra spoon full of sugar, or was it something else?" I ask him.
Luka shakes his head no, "No, it wasn't a little extra sugar. It was sickly sweet, almost as if I was drinking straight nectar, but there was another taste mixed in with it. It was very faint, but it tasted like..." I cut him off.
"Fresh lemons?" I ask.
"Yes, that's...right," Luka replies, yawning again.
"You know, Luka, you should really take a nap."
"No. No, Sophie, I'm fine."
"No, Luka, I'm being serious about this, you've been yawning all morning, and while we were in Debby's office. Now, I have a meeting at home and I don't want you to be bored out of your mind. Besides, this is your childhood bed. Deep down, you probably want to go to sleep on it, and don't worry, you're safe." I say.
"You think so?" Luka asks.
"I know so. Here, stand up for a second," I reply as I stand up myself. He does so, and I lift up the covers and set them off to the side. "Alright, Luka, sit back down." Luka nods and sits back down. I lift his legs up and put them in the bed, then pull the covers back on him, he then starts to sniff them.
"Smells like Lysol," he says.
"Breathe in that scent slowly," I tell him. He does so, and in no time it all, He's fast asleep. I turn around and start to head towards the door. I grab another handful of Gummy-bears for the road. I walk out, shutting the door quietly behind me.
The sickly sweet smell, the sickly sweet taste, mixed with the taste of fresh lemons. Luka's description of the drug repeats in my head.
There is but one plant that fits that profile. Yip-nip.
I run until I find the elevator and step inside, the doors close. Once I'm out in the hallway, I break into a sprint.
Yip-nip is this little yellow flower that's similar in appearance to a buttercup, but it has properties that are more in line with chloroform and wolfsbane and cat-nip (to a certain degree). Yip-nip can be used in three ways. You can just pick the flower off the stem and just sniff it, you will get a little buzz. Pups like to do this at the club in the main part of the territory. Unlike human street drugs, Yip-nip is totally legal, you can even buy it on store shelves. If you want to take it up a notch, some people eat the brightly yellow colored petals that will get you a stronger buzz that some people say is better than getting drunk, and you wake up without the hangover. The last way that Yip-Nip is used is more of a doubled edged sword, the nectar of Yip-nip can be used as a tranquilizer and painkiller that is ten times more powerful than morphine. That's good news for doctors, but, it's also good news for any bad guys looking to kidnap someone, if you get what I mean.
The doors open and I fly out, heading towards Debby's office. I knock a few times. "Come in," Debby says from the other side of the door. I open the door and step in, "Hello again, Sophie, what can I do for you?" Debby asks, sitting at her desk. "Wait. Where's Luka?"
"First of all, he's in his room taking a nap, and secondly, I think I know what Luka was drugged with," I reply.
"Wait hold on Sophie, how do you know he was drugged?" she asks me.
"It will be easier if I just showed you instead of telling you, look into my eyes," I say as I sit down in the chair. She does so. I take in a deep breath. My eyes turn yellow. I show her the memories of what Luka told me a few nights ago. The entire picture show only lasts for about ten seconds.
"Oh, that explains it," Debby says, breaking eye contact with me.
"What, Debby?" I ask.
"Look, Sophie, don't tell any of the kids this..." She pauses, typing on her laptop for a second before continuing on, "But we have the whole house under CCTV. We have cameras inside each one of the rooms, no one gets in or out without us (meaning the other staff members) knowing about it."
"And your point is?" I ask her, raising an eyebrow.
Debby then picks the laptop up and walks around to my side of the desk, then she sets it back down. "This is the video feed from Luka's room just before he was taken."
I look at the screen, and for a few seconds nothing happens, then a tall man wearing a black hoodie steps through the open window and into Luka's bedroom. I then watch horrified as the tall man picks up my soul mate, turns around and carries him back out the window, Debby then stops the footage, it takes all the will power I have not to scream out in a sheer panic.
Debby looks at me. "Even though we didn't catch the guy who kidnapped Luka, we did catch his figure."
"Do you have any clues about who could've pulled this off?" I ask.
"Actually, yes," Debby says, nodding her head, then she pauses for another moment to type on her laptop some more. "This is the shot of the back door just a few minutes before he was taken," she says as she starts to roll the footage A few seconds go by and a man, the same one I just saw carry Luka out his bedroom window, enters the hallway carrying a mug of what I'm guessing is hot chocolate. After the shadowy figure moves out of camera view Debby stops the footage.
After I take in another deep breath, I compose myself, then a light bulb goes off in my head. "Who had access to that back door, Debby?" I ask her firmly.
My tone takes her slightly aback. "There were only two people who had the key. Myself, or sometimes I would let one of my staff have it, but they would always bring it back when they were done," Debby replies.
"So, it was one of your staff members then," I say.
Debby shakes her head slightly, "Let me finish. There was one other person I gave a key to, but I don't think you want to know who it was."
I then look Debby straight in the eye. "Tell me who it was, Debby," I say.
She sighs. "The Alpha before you... Your father."
This leaves me puzzled, what would my father want with Luka, or rather, why would he want to kidnap him? Then, another light bulb goes off in my head.
"Debby, did you pull Luka's records off the pack members network, or the Den House's?" I ask her.
"The Den House's, why are you asking?" She asks back, arching one of her eyebrows.
"Can I access the Den House's records through my home computer?" I ask, an urgent tone to my voice as I stand up from my chair.
"Yes, you can, but not without the access code." Debby replies.
"What's the access code?" I ask her, sounding urgent.
"33198. Why?" She asks.
"No time to explain. I've got to run home for a while, take care of Luka while I'm gone!" I yell as I run out of Debby's office, run up the hallway, out of Den House, and towards my own house.
