Chapter 1 Dry and High
Luka's P.O.V.
A sharp shiver ripples through my body, rapidly dissipating into the early morning air. My dark brown eyes open, and I wake up in a cold sweat. I grip firmly onto my good luck charm, a small pentagram-shaped pendant I keep around my neck. My mom gave me this, before running off into the darkness of the night, and leaving me here. It wasn't her fault. She was a Rogue, after all. She had no choice but to leave me here, which probably explains why I'm the Omega in the first place.
The name's Luka by the way. I'm the lowest ranking member of the Emerald Stone Pack, and to say I am treated as such would be an understatement. Feeling the pangs of hunger and then hearing the loud growl of my stomach, I roll over onto my belly, and slide out from underneath the brown park bench I've called home for three years now. I know it isn't much, but it's the only shelter I've got.
Once I'm on my feet, I glance over my right shoulder to spot if anyone's stalking me, before I walk over to the silver trash can on the street curb for some breakfast, assuming that there is something to eat. Once I'm sure it's safe, I slowly step towards the shiny steel container, careful not to jostle my legs too much.
Every part of my body hurts. Injuries from past beatings and punishments have made me barely able to move, not that I'd want to. If I said it once, I've said it a thousand times. It stinks to be me.
I walk over to the trash can, almost tiptoeing, trying to avoid the pain that rips through my entire body. I undo the black bungee cord on the top of the can and open it. Inside, I find a goldmine. Someone has thrown away a basket of fries with two and a half fries still inside. That may not sound like much, but for me it's a thin slice of nirvana.
"Heaven thank the person who gave me this meal," I mumble under my breath, as I take one of the fries and stick it in my mouth. "This is more than I've had to eat in a whole week."
Once that's done, I close the lid, and reattach the bungee cord. I then rub the chill bumps off of my arms, with a slight shiver myself. It's freezing this morning. That's unusual for springtime. I detest cold weather. Firstly, there's the fact that I'm outside all the time during the cold, and then there's the fact that my paper-thin rags don't help matters much. I shiver again, but this time it's not because of the cold, but rather the thought that just ran through my mind. Well, it's been a week since the last one. It's time for my weekly 'Shower.'
The only place I'm allowed to take a 'Shower' is all the way across the pack territory, so the only chance I have to make it there before the rest of the pack wakes up is to shift.
I get down on all fours and relax my whole body, my bones begin to crack. Unlike most wolves, where it stops hurting a while after your first shift, my shift didn't. It still hurts, even though it has been six years (NO, our clothes they don't rip, and NO, don't ask me where they go!).
Once I'm on four paws, I start running towards my destination. Running in this form is also very painful, but I shake it off, grit my teeth, and keep on running. That's not the only thing my injuries have stopped me from doing normally. I've also lost the ability to heal quickly. Because of my injuries, on average it takes my body weeks, or months to heal a simple break, instead of hours, if I did get that much time to recover.
Something strange also happens when I shift. Everything I have on me disappears when I shift, everything that is, except the pendant I keep around my neck. It and the dark green piece of thin wire that it's attached to seem to morph with me, it's as if I'm wearing a collar.
When I'm close to my destination, I shift back and slow down in front of the School building. About two years ago, I was walking around the front of the School looking for something to eat, when one of the teachers came out. I think he originally intended to tell me to get lost, but when he saw how dirty I was, I think he took pity on me, as a result he gave me permission to use his hosepipe. I think he wanted to help me more, but he couldn't. It's against the law of this pack to take in an Omega unless they get a mate that's of a higher ranking.
I walk around to the back of the School, where I'm sure no one can see me, and strip down. I turn on the water, hold the hose over my head, and begin to rinse myself off. The cold water hits my back like a kick in the gut, and I shiver, but I don't care. I'm used to it by now, although I can only do this for a couple of minutes before my body temperature drops too low. Once my couple of minutes are up, I turn the water off, and put my rags back on.
Later on in the day, after hitting up a few more trash cans, I decide to swing back by my 'Home.' From the moment I came around that final turn that leads to the park, I could smell that there was to be trouble there waiting for me ahead. And what do ya know, I was right.
Standing in front of my 'Home' are the two Betas, Keith and Cody. They punish me more than all the other members.
"Hey runt, you're late for the party," Keith chuckles, as he gets off my 'Home' and shifts.
"Yeah, and you're the entertainment," Cody says, as he shifts, and walks slowly towards me.
I curl my lip back in a snarl, but it's useless, no one ever takes my small wolf seriously. As they come closer, I try to think of the one thing that always fills me with joy before the pain begins, my mate. Heat radiates throughout my chest as I start to think about my one and only. How wonderful it would be to find her today, but then, I stop myself, a bit of doubt replaces the hopefulness that had been there only a moment before, and the heat in my chest vanishes, leaving a cold empty space behind. My ears then flatten and I whimper. How can I be sure that I even have one, and even if I did, could she accept me for who I am? Well of course she couldn't. After all, who could ever learn to love me for who I am? Who can ever learn to love an Omega?
The pain starts.

Sophie's P.O.V.
Like a large stone being thrown in the water, I collapse down into my tub. I let out a soothing sigh as the warm water surrounds me. "Another long day being Alpha," I say to myself. I'm Sophie Petersen by the way, Alpha of the Emerald Stone Pack. I am one of only a few Alpha females in existence. I've been the Alpha female for two years now, ever since my father, Ronald, and my two brothers, Daniel and Michael, were all killed in a Rogue attack. Since no other pack members had the Alpha gene but me, I got the job. My mother Kimberly was also killed by rogues, but it happened one year before.
At first the older males didn't take me seriously, they would all look at me and laugh. Until I started punishing them and laying down the law. I didn't punish them too badly, just enough to say, I'm boss now, back off. It took months, but finally, I gained their respect, and they earned mine in return. That's what being an Alpha's all about, well for me at least. Not punishing and bossing everybody around, but rather gaining respect from your followers, and giving it back in return.
I feel a buzzing sensation in the back of my head, meaning someone wants to use the mind link. I know immediately who it is. Speak of the little devil, I think to myself. "Hey babe, what's up?" I asked my boyfriend on the other end.
My boyfriend, Ace Summers, is the Alpha from a neighboring pack. After my family was killed, almost half of his pack came to support mine in our time of grieving, then we started seeing each other. I know it's wrong to have a boyfriend while my mate's still out there, but one of our laws says that when I turn eighteen I can pick whoever I want to be my lifelong partner.
"Oh, nothing much, just laying on my bed reading a book. Funny, I was just thinking about you. What about you? What are you doing, Sophie?" Ace asks me.
"Oh, just soaking in the tub after a long hard day of being Alpha."
"I can come over there," he suggests, "If you're looking for some company that is."
I think about it for a moment. "Thanks for the offer, babe, but I'd rather fly this one solo."
"Okay. Fine, but do you want to come over and jam with me tonight?" He asks, sounding hopeful.
"Ya, sure. I mean, I was thinking about going for a run after my bath, but yeah. I can come over there for the night," I tell him.
"I'm looking forward to it."
"Same here," I say, as a smile creeps its way onto my face. "Bye, babe." I disconnect the mind link, as I sink lower into the tub.
A little while later, I step out of the tub, put on a bright yellow sundress, and pull my long, light blond hair into a braided ponytail. I then walk down the stairs, two separate flights of stairs with a wooden landing in between them. Now, this may sound like something out of Harry Potter, but the landing is actually a secret door that leads to the bunker. I don't know why we would even need a bunker, but I can tell you one thing, it's totally cool, and it's totally soundproof.
I walk over to the door and open it. I step outside, get down on all fours, and I easily shift into my cream-collared wolf. My usual route is just around the neighborhood, but today I feel like running to the other end of the territory and seeing what's going on over there. I take off running. As far as wolves go, mine's pretty big, well for a female at least.
I run away from Alpha Hood. It's where the Alpha's, Beta's, and the elders live. It's just a plain street with a lot of mansions. I go past Beta Street. It's the same concept. It's just like Alpha Hood when our Betas don't want a mansion, they can live here. The houses on this street are just normal houses, and I find them quite cozy.
I make a left turn and just run for a little way until I reach the Gamma Village. This place is built like one of those African villages with the small huts, and everything. The only difference is that they have indoor plumbing. "Hi, Alpha," one of my Gammas says. I lift my head and nod to her as I go by.
I finally shift back and decide to rest on a bench in a park. It's a pretty large park. As I sit down, I start to think about him, my mate. Even though I have a boyfriend, my soulmate is never far from my mind. I think to myself: I wonder what he'll be like? Will he have black hair with striking blue eyes? What rank will he be? What if he has a low ranking, will I reject him? I shake my head. No, I'll love him no matter what rank he is, I think to myself.
Then a soft breeze blows by me, and with it comes a loud whimper. The sound makes my heart cringe, sending my Alpha senses into overdrive.
My Alpha senses are a special birthright. All Alphas have them, males and females. I activated them when I was ten, but I only started using them when I became the Alpha. When I'm using them, all of my normal senses - hearing, sight, sound, and smell - are enhanced. It's like I'm a superhero, and I have superpowers. Today, it's my site that's enhanced. My eyes quickly travel to the other end of the park, where they land on a horrible sight. I see my two head Betas, Keith and Cody Grim, throwing a much smaller wolf back and forth from one another as if he were a ball.
The much smaller wolf lands in Cody's jaws. He lets out a blood-curdling, plaintive cry for help which reverberates against my eardrum. My eyes return to normal. My wolf starts to stir inside me.
"He's our mate. He's our mate, stop them!" She howls in my head.
A gasp leaves my mouth and my muscles tense a bit, I then leap forwards and shift into my wolf again without thinking twice about it, and break into a running stride in only a few seconds. I can feel my paws hit the ground as I race to save my one and only.
My soul mate.
