Leaving Everything
Dean sat in the hospital waiting room. He held a Polaroid picture of him and Cas between his fingers. He carried it around with him in his wallet everywhere he went. His foot tap anxiously against the floor. It's been about twelve hours and he hasn't been given any word on Cas whatsoever. All he could do was blame himself. This is all my fault, he thought to himself. Cas wouldn't be here if it wasn't for me. He hated himself. Cas couldn't love him after this or at least he wouldn't want him to...
A nurse came into the waiting room. She had a pretty face and a nice smile. She tried to seem as cheerful as possible delivering news to Dean. "Hi! My name is Jo. I'm one of the nurses who has been taking care of your friend."
Dean corrected, "My boyfriend."
She continued, "Ah, yes. Your boyfriend. He's not in the best condition. Broken leg and completely beaten up with a little damage hear and there. The good news is that he finally woke up. He has been out cold ever since they brought him in, but he's wide awake and can now breathe on his own which is great news. He's also been asking for you. His other immediate family is already in there-I think his sister."
Dean quickly scrambled to his feet and asked eagerly, "What room is he in?"
She flicked her head to the right, "Down the hall, room 307."
Dean nodded, "Thank you."
He sprinted down the hall, brushing past other nurses and possible doctors. He hesitated in opening the door. He didn't want to see Cas like this...all his fault. Everything happened so quickly and Dean couldn't stop it. He should've known his stalker from last week had been his dreadful sinister father. He was just too indulged in Cas to even give a damn....look at where it got him.
He had already explained to the police what happened and they were searching for John, but no such luck. It was like he dropped off the face of the earth. Dean slowly pushed the door open and immediately saw Charlie leaning over Cas. She turned around and glared at Dean. It was obvious she was blaming Dean too. Who could blame her? Cas whispered something to Charlie and Charlie took Hannah and exited the room while purposely bumping shoulders with Dean as she left. The slam of the door that made Dean jump.
One side of Dean's mouth tugged into a half smile. He managed to say, "How you doing, buddy?"
Cas was smiling, but his brows furrowed. He echoed, "Buddy? Get over here, Dick Pancake, and let me love you."
Dean shook his head, "I don't think that's a good idea. I need to keep my distance..."
Cas tilted his head, "What? Why? What's going on, Dean?"
Dean sighed, "This is my fault-all of this. You shouldn't be here... It should be me, not you."
Cas disagreed, "You couldn't have prevented this. Don't you dare blame yourself."
"Even Charlie is blaming me. This is definitely my fault. I shouldn't have let you come with me."
"You couldn't have stopped me even if you tried, Dean."
Dean sat down on a chair that was on the complete opposite side of the room, far away from Cas. He massaged his temples and spoke, "Cas, I could've done something. I could've pushed you out of the way. I should've put your safety before mine."
"I would jump in front of a car for you any day, darling..."
"You could've died, Cas. Don't you get that?! I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing I could've prevented it. You aren't taking this very seriously. You almost didn't wake up too..."
Cas shook his head with tears welling, "And I thought you were dead a couple of weeks ago!"
"Maybe all these bad things happening to us is a sign..."
"A sign of what," Cas yelled, trying not to strain himself too much as tears ran down his reddened face.
"A sign that we shouldn't be together," Dean stated.
"You don't mean that! I fucking love you, Dean! Don't you fucking dare do this to me!"
"I love you too, but I'm not good for you... I refuse to come even the slightest bit near you while my father is still out there somewhere. I will not put you in danger again," Dean stood up. "I'm breaking up with you, Cas. I'm leaving town. It's for the best. You need to stay safe and my mother needs to stay safe. I'm going to live with my uncle for awhile until they find John..."
Dean began walking out the door as Cas screamed his name over and over. Nurses came rushing in to restrain Cas and calm him. Dean walked down the hallway, but fell to his knees at the end. His face buried into his palms and he cried harder than he ever had before.
He ran in a sprint down the stairwell and out the exit to the impala. His hands shook as he put the key in ignition. He drove back to Cas' house to retrieve all of his things, throwing them into sacks and then into the impala. Dean might have taken a few of Cas' shirts too only because they reminded him of old memories.. By the end of it, it was as if no one had been there at all besides Cas.
It hurt.
Everything hurt.
The pain in his chest killed, but not as much as it hurt to leave Cas. To just end everything just like that. He hated himself. He hurt himself because he felt like he needed to. Because he deserved to be hurt. He was just a waste of space. Nothing. He was worth nothing to everyone. It wasn't easy leaving Cas. The hardest thing he ever had to do. He loved him. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with him. But it was all just over in a matter of a second. His whole world was just over.
All of this had been so excruciatingly painful. He thought about it all. Everything that conspired. He intended to come back for Cas, but he needed everyone to believe he didn't care. That way John wouldn't hurt him because if he did it would have no affect on Dean. That's all that mattered. That Cas was safe now...
Dean had called his mother and told her everything. She was the only person he could talk to. She was freaking out due to the whole John dilemma, but she genuinely cared that Dean's heart was now shattered and he didn't know what to do. Dean told her about staying with Bobby... Maybe it would just be best to stay away for everyone's safety. Leaving town was his best option. He'd be safe, his mother would be safe, and although he worried about Cas' safety...he would be safe in moderation considering they were no longer together.
Dean believed that it was best for Cas to actually be able to live a life without him. Maybe this was the best thing for Cas right now....
