Chapter 29

"Miss (L/N)..." You looked up, your tearstained eyes stinging in the bright light.
        "Y-yes?"
        "Your father-" He paused. "He, didn't make it... I'm so sorry."
        You let out a mournful wail, sinking to your knees.
        "D-dad!" Tears blinded your vision, and Hiro rushed to your side, helping you to your feet. He had tears in his eyes as well, and his voice cracked at he spoke.
        "(Y/N), I'm... so sorry." You yanked your arm from his grasp, and staggered over to the doctor.
        "Can... I see him? Just one last time?"
        "Of course."
        He led you back into the room, and closed the door behind you. There, he lay, icily still on his bed. You walked slowly over to him, and took his hand in your own.
        "Dad!" his hand was cold, and you held it to your chest. Though you his eyes were closed, his chest was still. You noticed he was fully wrapped up in bandages.
        "He was bleeding internally." The doctor told you quietly. "From his bullet wound. By the time we found out... it was too late.." You let out another sob, suddenly being overwhelmed by nausea. You lept up, and ran into the bathroom, throwing up in the toilet.
        You sat there a while, until you'd emptied your stomach and even then, you continued to choke and sob on the floor. The man who'd brought you in set a hand on your shoulder. "You should go. Your family's' waiting for you outside. Get yourself cleaned up first." You couldn't speak, but you shakily got to your feet, and went over to the sink, splashing cold water over your face. Then, you walked out, not looking back at the bed holding your father. What were you going to do without him?

                                                                                                                      ~~~
        "(Y/N)! Hiro! Let's go! We're going to be late!"
        You slipped on your black shirt, smoothing out the wrinkles, before following Hiro downstairs. Today was the day of your father's funeral, and you were already fighting back tears. That had begun to happen. Anytime you thought of him, you'd start to cry. It hadn't even hurt this much when you lost your mother- though that was so long ago you barely remembered.
        "Come on sweetie." Aunt Cass set a hand on your shoulder and led you outside to the car. Hiro, wearing a black suit and tie, got in next to you without a word. For the past few days since you returned home, you stayed in bed constantly, ignoring Hiro when he tried to talk to you. You hardly ate, and now you wearily accepted his silence. He had a right to be mad at you, but you didn't take much time to worry about that now.
        The drive was long, and it was a relief when you finally pulled up at the beach where the funeral would be taking place.
        People were already beginning to gather, talking quietly amongst themselves. But, when they saw you walk up and take your place near the pile of your father's things and photographs set out, they fell silent. Then, one by one, people began to stand up, and speak something about your father. Memories, and poems, and the entire time, you sat there with a piece of tissue, sobbing uncontrollably. Even Asia came back, though this surprised you since she practically hated his guts. But, you supposed she took some of the blame for his death because he got shot protecting her.
        You felt a hand on your shoulder, an looked up to see Hiro smile sadly at you, and take a spot next to you. He wasn't crying, but his face was solemn, and he looked straight ahead, keeping a hand on your shoulder the whole time.
        When everyone was done speaking, they walked down to the water's edge, and threw little, yellow flowers into the foaming surf, and watching as the waves slowly pulled them father and father out into the sea.
        You turned to Hiro and pulled him into a hug. For the first time in days, you longed for his comfort, and whished he'd say something, but he only hugged you tighter.
        "I miss him Hiro," you choked out, lifting your gaze back to the water.
        "I know (Y/N), I know."
