Chapter 1:
Off Into the City
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Imagine a pre-teen adolescent living a somewhat normal life-- well; the definition of normal could have many different meanings. Now, getting back on track here. Imagine being that adolescent and suddenly get thrown into a world of craziness. Becoming the hero, the villain, whatever, right? We all know those stories too much and most of the time the protagonist accepts their role and sometimes they don't.
For someone in the likes of I?
I'm more aware of certain things as my role as.... Whoever I want to be in certain situations.
Me; being an adolescent AND having special abilities.
No, no. None of that super strength or super speed, ect. It can be simple most days and a bit complex on most. As far as I can remember, my abilities are the normal psychic type. Reading people, seeing a small glimpse of danger in the near future, energy/spiritual healing, ya know, a stronger gut feeling.
Most importantly, I can see things that other people can't see. Is this boring you? Sorry. Let's just cut to the chase.
The beats drum smoothly through my earbuds and I gently nod my head to the music. Each word skims across the screen as my thumb lightly glides across the screen of my phone. Most of the time, I read or write. Mainly fanfiction.
"Hey, (Y/n)!"
There's a soft nudge to my shoulder and I glance up to see the Golden Gate Bridge come into view. The giant red structure sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the new place that we're moving to.
Welcome to San Fransokyo....I guess.
In the driver seat of the sports car sat my guardian, Kenji Daisuke. More of an older foster brother? No idea, but he still acts like an older brother. There had been a feeling I've been getting ever since I heard we were moving.
A journey awaits as our car mixes into the busy streets of the city and the moving truck close behind. Kenny gets paid a lot as a doctor and he is getting paid more to work here in San Fransokyo. It's great that he helps people, he's his own superhero during the day and night at the hospital. While I happen to help the unseen.
"Now where was the Skyline Complex again?" Kenji removes his hands from the wheel and pulls out his phone.
My eyes widen and I immediately grab the wheel while slightly panicking, "KENNY! Keep both hands on the wheel next time?"
He waves a hand in dismal and grins, pushing up his glasses. "Over yonder, My Dearest Sis!" He points to the road that led to the complex. Seriously? Kenny laughs and takes the wheel, "I'm joking!"
We take a turn into the garage of the fancy building and the Krei Tech logo is noticeable when the gate moves away.
"Wow. I guess being a personal doctor of Alistar Krei has its perks. Well, whenever he needs it." He parks the car and we step out of the vehicle. I fix the bag on me while putting away my music.
"I guess. Although....I have a feeling things will get interesting in the city." I say subconsciously. Anyone would know that right? Being new in a big city. The cliché type of the new person scenario. "One thing I'm glad about is that Freddie lives here." I couldn't wait to visit my brother's best friend.
"Yep! With him around, you will never be tossed to boredom." Kenny casually slips on a doctor's coat and buttoning it half way.
A frown makes its way to my face, "You're leaving to work already?"
He sighs and smiles warmly, "Duty Calls. So I expect you to see the penthouse then just do whatever you want. Maybe even visit Fred, yeah?"
I take the penthouse key card and sigh, "Okay." I'm pulled into his embrace and I hug back happily.
"Just don't get into trouble."
I snicker and walk backwards toward the elevators, "Since when did I ever get into trouble? Trouble finds me, if I can avoid it."
Kenji rolls his eyes and waves while getting back into the car.
With a sigh, I examine the key card and shrug. "Living in a high tech city could have its perks, especially since my brother has certain access to Krei Tech facilities." I tap my chin while taking the elevator up to the penthouse. "Or I can pronounce myself Intern-In-Training. Yeah, good thinking, (Y/n)."
There were a lot of things to go through when the moving guys brought in our stuff. Mainly just boxes of things we collected over the years.
Maybe this move will be something new and great. I throw open the balcony doors and step to the city view. "Wow." This place is every fanfiction-fantic's dream, sure, but I always feel at home when I'm with my brother, no matter where we go. My eyes trail over everything.
The sounds of busy streets and people everywhere faintly reached my ears as I fixed my satchel. It faded out once I put on my earbuds, ya know, to make my stroll a bit more.....eh, cinematic.
An opening to the next chapter in my life.
Music drowned out the city noises as I thought about Kenji because lately......he wasn't around that often. The hospital is always calling him into work more and more. Now, I'm okay with it since he's helping people, but.....what about me?
Suddenly, I feel myself bump into someone, causing me to catch my falling earbuds. "Sorry!" I said quickly before speed walking away to avoid embarrassment. I can't believe I didn't see that coming.
A bell rang as a trolley stopped a few feet in front of me. An excited smile grew on my face, "Cool!" I got on and took a seat that gave more of a view to the outside scenery.
The trolley started to move and I began to get lost in thought. It started to get a little lonely, until there's a tap on my shoulder which made me turn to see a guy. The thing that stood out most was the forest green cardigan.
He smiled warmly, "Hey, sorry to disturb you, but this fell out of your bag." He held up the key card to the apartment and I blushed in embarrassment.
"Thanks." I take it and put it away.
"No problem. Are you new to San Fransokyo?"
I smile shyly, not really the one to socialize, but I end up answering him. "Yeah, my foster brother and I moved here today."
It felt like I could trust him as he smiled. "That's great. It seems like this is your first time exploring the city."
I raised a brow and chuckle, "Is it that easy to tell?"
"Well, considering you've just missed all the stops." He gestures to the area outside the trolley.
That's when I notice we were almost on the last stop. "I didn't really notice, guess I started daydreaming again." A sad sigh escaped my lips, then a hand gently placed itself on my shoulder.
"You alright there?" His brown eyes held worry, reminding of Kenji.
I shook my head, "Yeah. I'm fine." He had that look that he didn't believe my answer, but smiled softly.
"I know you're not telling the truth. How's about we make a deal? I'll hang around for awhile and show you some places around San Fransokyo, then you tell me what's up?"
I was really surprised that someone would be so nice to take their time showing me around. "Really?" My arms cross while I stare at him suspiciously. "Should I pull the Stranger Danger card?"
His eyes widen with shock and his face turns red with an embarrassed smile, "No,no! I promise that I'm not some Danger Stranger— I mean a dangerous stranger." He facepalms himself.
I couldn't help it and laugh at him.
He laughed sheepishly, "I'm Tadashi, by the way. Tadashi Hamada. Also the person you bumped into by the Lucky Cat Cafe."
Confused, my mind went back to the person I bumped into and I blush again in embarrassment. "I'm really sorry about that. Guess I was too in thought. I didn't even realize I walked by a cafe." I shrug it off and I smile warmly, shaking his hand. "(Y/n) (L/n)."
The trolley stopped and we both got up to get off. "So why did you want to show me around?"
Tadashi shrugged his shoulders. "I like to help everyone when I can and you kinda remind me of my little brother."
"Oh really?" I said cheekily, which Tadashi ruffled my hair.
"Hey!" I move away and cross my arms in a pouting demeanor.
He laughed. "Yep. Definitely like my little bro." His voice seemed to trail off and I watch Tadashi's eyes glaze over like he was recalling a memory. He shook his head, then smiled down at me. "Ready for the tour?"
I nod.
*•°•°○》*◇*《○°•°•*
Soon, we went past many buildings, streets, and shops as Tadashi talked about himself. This gave me a strong feeling of how kind and brotherly his personality was.
Just like us all, he felt sadness. Most from the loss of his parents, but there had been something else that brought him sadness and guilt. For someone like Tadashi, I decided to try to help him a little at ease by giving short replies.
There were a few people who walked by with the look I was too familiar, but I shrugged it off. "Okay now, taking a break from myself. The best place to get hang around -in my opinion- is the Lucky Cat Café."
I took that in consideration to look there later. "Sounds cozy by the name." His smile grew faint in the most caring way, almost longing. "Is it like your favorite place to go or something?"
"Lets just say, a certain person who's giving you a tour, lives there and his Aunt owns that cafe." Tadashi hums happily.
"Has it been awhile since you've seen them?" I asked and grin shyly, "Do you maybe want go there with me—"
"—No!" Tadashi yelled in worry and I raised a brow at him as he quickly composed himself. "I can't exactly go there because...." It took a minute or two before he answered. "Because....I....was going to surprise my brother and Aunt Cass. Sorry I didn't tell you before, I barely came back from a Robotics Exchange Program that I signed up for."
With a slow nod and the suspicious hint in my guy, I smile reassuringly, "I'm guessing they all don't know you're back?"
Tadashi looks away with a dispiriting sigh, "Yeah, so if you see any of my friends or family, please don't tell them I'm here yet."
For some odd reason, a chill went up my spine and this meant that someone is lying or a spirit/ghost is around. I glance around, not seeing anything, so I shrug it off as nothing.
"Okay." There was something Tadashi wasn't telling me.
"Thanks (Y/n)."
It had gotten a little awkward after that conversation, but the view of the city in the setting sun washed over me in a sense of peace. The time where people are starting to head home from a long day at work and giving enough space for the night owls to come out. Unfortunately, Kenji is mostly a 24 hour guy.
My eyes casted down to stare at the sidewalk and I slipped my hands in my pockets. Sadness began to creep up, until a hand placed itself on my shoulder, but I pulled away slightly.
"Everything alright?" Tadashi asked with worry as we stopped walking.
I take a deep breath, "No....and I'm not fully comfortable telling anyone yet."
The sign near us turned on as the light blue glow spelt out the words; "San Fransokyo Institute of Technology." Of course, the japanese architecture of the buildings still fascinated me.
"Hiro goes here."
My gaze shifted toward Tadashi and he had this hazed expression. A tear fell and he wiped it with a proud smile, while the previous look vanished. "I'm still proud of him, even though I can't tell him myself."
Something seemed iffy. The way he spoke was quite.....odd. I'm probably just overthinking things. 'Maybe that's what Dad says when he hasn't come to visit me.... He's scared.... Yeah!' I thought with a smile because there was nothing to worry about. "Since you're back from the Exchange Program, I'm sure you'll be able to tell him yourself."
A flash of pain crossed his face only for him to cover it up with a tiny smile. "Yeah and I'll find a way to tell him."
That chill went up my spine again and I caught myself scanning around the area, feeling extremely anxious.
Tadashi began to say something, but an obnoxious honk of a car horn immediately grabbed our attention. A sports car, which happens to be your favorite color, parked right next to you two. Slowly, the window rolled down to reveal....A Stupid-Head. (aka. Your Brother) Kenji.
"Get in, Loser, we're having takeout tonight! Your pick!"
My face heats up with embarrassment, "Kenny!!!! How did you even find me?"
"With a bag like yours, I can spot you miles away!"
I huff with offense and look down at my favorite bag, "What's wrong with it?!"
"Nothing, other than my tracker on it." He pushes up his glasses with his tongue sticking out with a dopey look, then turns up the volume on the stereo.
"Sorry, Tadashi. Maybe we can meet up again sometime soon—"
"—Hey, Little Bumblebee!!! I know what you want from me!!! Dubi-Dubi-Du Dah Dah!!! Dubi-Dubi-Du Dah Dah!!!"
"KENNY! Bye, Tadashi!" I rush into my brother's car and roll up the window and wave at Tadashi before the tinted windows shut. "Seriously?" I turn down the music and stare as Kenji just shakes his shoulders with the music.
He grins and mouths the lyrics. "Come on, (Y/n)! You know you wanna join. I start to cry when you walk out the door! You go bye, bye, bye! I say why, why, why?!"
The night began to cover the city and every building lights turned on to make it all glimmer beautifully. We picked up my favorite carry out food as we made our way back home. I'm honestly glad Kenji found me because I did not want to walk back or take a taxi. As we slowed to a stop sign, my attention went to the home/café next to us.
Wait....was that Tadashi?
Yeah.
He stood beside the window of the café and stared inside at the slightly busy place, but mainly at a group of friends? His hand reaches out to touch the glass in longing.
That's all I saw before we drove away.
"That place has really good coffee." Kenji says and nods down at his empty cup.
"The Lucky Cat Café."
