Chapter 6
"Congratulations on escaping Trick Tower, everyone," the purple haired examiner spoke as he stood with a grin. "All that remain now are the fourth and final phase."
"Only two more..." someone mumbled in the small crowd of applicants.
"The fourth phase will take place right over there on Zevil Island," the examiner continued to explain as he pointed over his shoulder to the the island in the distance. "Now, let's proceed."
Hen snapped his fingers and another man wheeled over a cart with a small box on it.
"To begin with, I will need each of yout o draw lots now."
"Draw lots for what? What'll that decide?" Pokkle questioned as he looked at the box skeptically.
The examiner merely smirked at the question. "Who you hunt, and who hunts you."
The applicants all stiffened at the realization of what this meant for the next phase of the exam.
"In this box there are exactly twenty six numbered cards, which means that one of the numbered cards will correspond with your badge," the purple haired man continued to explain the next phase. "Now each of you will draw a card in the order you exited the tower. Alright? Which of you was first?"
Everyone turned their gaze to Hisoka as he walked forward to draw a number from the box. Aoifa walked up with Zepheena right behind her and they each drew their cards.
This continued until all of the applicants had drawn a card from the box.
After the last person, being Tonpa, pulled his card, the examiner cleared his throat.
"Has everyone drawn their card?" He questioned as he looked around the pool of remaining applicants. "Now if you would, please remove the sticker."
Zephi peeled the sticker off the card she had pulled out of the box. 198. She tried to rack her brain to see if she could remember who wore that badge number.
"The number you see is your target. The box has recorded the number you drew, so you may throw that card away if you wish. The objective is to steal yor target's badge."
"Oh good, so we don't have to kill each other then," one applicant spoke up and Zephi looked over, her eyes narrowing in on the badge on his shirt.
'So it's him,' Zephi though as she studied his appearance.
He was lanky with a blue turtleneck shirt and his brown nhair was mostly covered by a white and green ball cap. Beside his were what seemed to be his brothers.
'If he sticks with his brothers the whole time, this might be harder than I thought.'
"The method in which you obtain the badge is up to you. Procure it however you see fit. But if you kill yourtarget, you take their badge easily," the examiner clarified.
"That sure sounds like the fastet way to me," another of the brothers spoke with a grin.
The blue shirt brother gulped. "So that's how it's gonna be?"
"Come on, there's nothing to be cared of," The tallest of the brothers teased as he elbowed the shortest.
"Listen carefully," The examminer spoke up once more. "Your own badge is worth three points. You's target's badge is also worth three points. Any other badge is worth only one point. In order to move on to the final phase, you will need to collect six points. So during your time on Zevil island, gather enough badges to collect six points or fail the exam. Only those who do will clear the fourth phase of the hunter exam. Now, follow me to the ferry that will lead you either victory or failure."
Zephi saw Gon and Killua sitting together on the boat so she decided to sit beside them as a peppy woman spoke about the exam.
"So, who did you get?" Killua asked as he looked at her.
"I got one of those tree brothers. One ninety eight," Zepheena replied as she showed them here card.
"Hey, that's one number from mine," Killua said as he showed her his card.
"One ninety nine, huh? That's one of them for sure, but uh, I don't remember which one, sorry. I was only paying attention to my target," Zephi said with a sheepish smile.
Killua waved it off. "At least I know it's one of them. Thanks, Zephi."
She then looked at Gon who seemed deep in thought. "Who did you get?"
"He got Hisoka," Killua answered for the dark haired boy.
Zepheena's eyes went wide. "Hisoka?"
"Yep," Gon nodded sharply.
"Well, you technically only have to steal his badge, so you don't actually have to fight him, right?" Zephi suggested. "Or you could always collect three other badges."
"No. I'm going after Hisoka's badge. I just have to figure out how to do it without fighting him," Gon agreed as he gave a determined smile.
"If anyone can do it, it's you."
Gon's smile grew as he looked between two of the new friends he had made.
"Each applicant is going to disembark in the order you completed the last phase in intervals of two minutes. Let's begin!"
The applicants prepard to start the fourth phase of the exam as they waited for their turn to get onto the island.
Zephi watched Aoifa disapear onto the island. As her turn approached, she looed back to her new friends and Kurapika.
Kurapika gave her a thumbs up with a reassuring smile. Gon waved while Killus just watche her with his hands shoved in his pockets as he gave a slight nod.
"The next applicant may go."
Zephi took a breath and then hopped down the ramp onto the island, finding her way through the trees.
'Alright. I need to get high up. I don't remember when the brothers finished, but it'll take a bit. I've got seven days.'
She climbed into the trees before moving branch to branch, pushing deeper into the woods. She knew she needed to find food, and safe location for the night.
The sun began to set after only a few hours of being on the island and Zephi had thankfully not yet run across any of her fellow applicants.
She had thought about starting a fire to cook some fish, but quickly knew it would be a bad idea. She didn't want to alert someone to her location. Finding fruit would be her best bet. So that's what she did.
She found a maza tree in her travels and collected a few so she would have some for her time on the island.
Now she was prepared to track down her target. But maybe she could get some help. Two against three is better odds right?
-
Killua walked through the woods with his hands in his pockets where they usually sat, annoyed by the fact that whoever was following him had yet to make a move.
"Killua?"
He looked up and saw Zephi standing in a tree a little ways in front of him.
"Hey, Zephi," he said with a nod.
She leapt down and he walked closer to her. "I was kind of hoping I'd find you."
"Oh?"
"You do know you're being followed right?" She said a bit softer.
"Yup. I don't know why they haven't attacked me yet, but I'm a little annoyed by it. Anyway, you were hoping that we could take on the brothers together, right? That's my guess at least," Killua assumed, continuing to walk with Zepheena by his side.
She nodded quickly. "Yeah. I figured my odds would be better. I haven't had a chance to study their ability so I don't know how strong they may be and I definitely don't want to under estimate them. The red shirt one at least. The skinny one seems like a wimp, while the bigger one kinda seems strong but not skilled. I don't know about the middle one though. I get the feeling he's the most skilled of the bunch."
"I definitely got the same vibe. I guess you can tag along. I don't mind the company."
"Good."
The two then continued in silence for a while before Zephi pulled out a maza fruit from her satchel.
"Hungry?" Killua teased.
"Starving. I've got some more," she said as she took another one out for the assassin. "Have one."
"I'm alright," he denied.
Zephi grimacedand shoved the fruit into his chest. "Sir, you need to eat. We haven't eaten in almost ten hours."
"Geez, fine, mom," he grumbled, but he took the fruit without any further objections.
He took a bite and his shoulders fell as he savored the delicious fruit.
"Good, right?"
"What is this?" Killua asked as he looked at the fruit curiously. "I've never had it before."
Zephi smiled and swallowed her own bite. "It's a maza fruit. We used to grow them in my village. I found some maza trees here on the island. I'm surprised you've never had one before."
"Yeah, my parents used to be kinda strict on my diet. I used to sneak chocolate robots into my room all the time," he replied with a chuckle.
"Chocolate robots? What are those? Just like chocolate in the shape of a robot?"
Killua's jaw dropped. "You've never had a chocolate robot?! That has to be like an actual crime."
"Can't say I have. Maybe I can try it when we pass the exam," Zephi offered.
He nodded quickly. "Definitely. I can't believe you've survived this long without eating a chocolate robot."
Zepheena laughed a little and just continued to eat her fruit.
After going for a while, the dark haired girl started yawning. Killua had noticed and realized that she probably couldn't stay up for days at a time like he had been trained to do.
"Hey, do you need to rest? I'll keep watch so our stalker doesn't try anything," Killua offered as he stopped.
"Are you sure? I don't wanna slow us down," she said quickly.
He nudged her lightly. "You made me eat so now I'm gonna make you sleep. You're obviously tired. That, and I don't feel like carrying you when you pass out from exhaustion."
Zepheena gave in and followed Killua over to a tree with a small hole in the stump that was big enough for her to curl up in.
Killua sat outside the hole and laid his back against the trunk.
He looked back to the girl curled up in the little hole, snickering to himself when he realized she was already asleep.
-
"Do you have any idea where we're actually going?"
Killua frowned as he hopped over a tree root. "Nope. I'm just sick of whoever it is just following us and not doing anything about it."
Zepheena nodded with a hum.
They continued for a couple more feet before Killua groaned and turned around.
"You're wasting your time. Follow us all you want but we'll never give you a chance to attack. Come out or I'll come to you," he demanded and Zephi tilted her head.
'I guess we're just doing this then.'
"This really is a pain, you know? Chances are, you're only worth one lowsy point to both of us," Killua whined.
Zepheena walked beside him before two other applicants showed up. The brothers.
"What are you an idiot?!" One of the brothers shouted at the blue shirted one as he kicked him.
"Yikes," Zephi mocked with a light laugh.
"You can't even beat two little kids? Gimme a break!!"
"Hold on! You got it all wrong, big brother!"
"And what part do I have wrong?!"
"I didn't wanna hurt a little kid, that's all. I thought I'd just hold off and take it while they slept. But I guess you're right. Time for a beat down," blue shirt said before turning to the teens.
They watched as he walked closer to them.
"I'll handle this, Zephi," Killua mumbled, not wanting to admit that he'd been itching for a fight.
"Alright, you two. Hand over your badges and you won't get hurt," blue shirt said shakily, feignibng confidence in front of his brothers.
"Idiot," Killua mocked which made the guy angry.
Zephi watched as Killua was kicked a bit back, but she could tell that the kick wasn't all that impressive. 'This is all we're dealing with?'
"Don't go saying I didn't warn ya! You're little girlfriend's next," he threatened as he approached Zephi who just stood there relaxed.
Killua hopped to his feet and smiled.
"What the hell, bro? You go easy on the little squirt?"
"You're too nice, Imori."
Killua just pulled a badge out of his pocket. "One ninenty eight. This is the badge you were looking for, right, Zephi?"
The three brithers gasped when the saw Imori's badge in Killua's hand.
"Oh, yeah! And one of those two have one ninety nine," Zepheena confirmed with a smile.
"Cool." Killua grinned.
The three brothers than seemed to get into a formation. Surrounding the two teenagers.
"I'm taking a guess. I'll go for the red shirt. You guy big guy, yeah?"
"Works for me," Zepheena agreed.
The second the brothers began to move, Zephi and Killua made their move, disappearing from sight.
Killua appeared behind the red shirt brother and kicked the back of his knees before pressing his nails to the guy's neck.
As for Zepheena, she came down on the bigger guys neck, elbowing him hard. He grunted and fell to ground with a groan, his eyes rolled in his head. "Oops! That was a bit harder than I planned."
"Careful now," Killua warned as he held his hostage in place, stealing his badge from his pocket. "Aw, man. You're one ninety seven."
"You guessed wrong," Zephi teased as she grabbed the bage from her guy's pocket. "One ninety nine."
"Oh well. I guess we can get rid of the one we don't need," Killua said with a grin.
He quickly launched the badge far into the distance.
"Good luck! You've got three days to find it! See ya later! Come on, Zephi!"
And with that, the two kids were gone, leaving the brothers to wonder what the hell had just happened.
