Chapter 2, Invisible Threats.

"Can you tell us what you saw?" A cop who was interrogating Hilda asked. "Did you see the killer? Can you describe him?"

"Well I don't think it was a man really." Hilda replied.

"A woman?"

"No more like a creature." Hilda said. "And it was invisible."

"Like a ghost?"

"No, I don't think it was a ghost." Hilda explained. "I suppose it could have been a ghost. I think it was a bit more um... evil than a ghost. It killed that man and stalked me and my friends. It was like some sort of invisible predator."

"A predator?"

"Yeah, like an animal that kills other animals for food." Hilda said

"And you think it ate this man?"

"Well his skin was gone, and I think some of his flesh too. I don't know what else he would have done with it." Hilda explained.

Another officer, a sketch artist was drawing a picture of the suspect based on Hilda's description.

"Is this the man, or creature you saw?" The sketch artist held up a blank piece of paper, so Hilda can see it.

"Yes, that's him." Hilda said looking at the blank paper. "Maybe even a tad more invisible."

Then Hilda let out a rasping cough.

"You alright kid?" one of the officers said.

"Yeah just a cough." Hilda said. "It's been going on for about a week now."

"Maybe you should see a doctor about that."

"I have an appointment for next week." Hilda replied.

Meanwhile David was being interviewed in the next room.

David looked at the officer before him. David was sweating like mad, his body tensed up at his own nervousness.

"ALRIGHT I ADMIT IT!" David blurted out. "I DON'T BRUSH MY TEETH BEFOR BED! I DON'T DO MY HOMEWORK! I DON'T LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFOR CROSSING THE STREETS! I EAT THE CANDY BARS I'M SUPPOSED TO SELL FOR SCOUTS! I'M THE ONE WHO FARTED JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO, BUT I BLAMED IT ON THE DOG!!!!!!"

"Uh kid I just got here." The officer said. "I haven't even asked you anything yet. And we don't even have a dog here, we have a cat."

"Oh. Carry on then."

...

Police cars swarmed the area where the skinned man was seen.

"Man, someone really didn't like this guy." Said one of the officers.

"The girl said she saw something invisible." Another officer pointed out.

"How can you see something invisible"

"How should I know."

The body was hauled away, and any clues found were taken to police headquarters.

As the last officer was about to get in his car, he heard a voice from the trees.

"Man, someone really didn't like this guy."

...

"Hilda you're going to be late for School!" Hilda's mother Johanna, as she walked to Hilda's room.

Johanna slowly opened the door to Hilda's room.

"Hilda, sweetie are you OK?"

"I don't feel so good." Hilda moaned.

"HILDA!!!" Johanna jumped at the site of her daughter's condition.

Her skin was pale, and she had dark circles under her eyes. Johanna put her hand to Hilda's forehead.

"You're burning up sweetie." Johanna said. "I'll call the doctor to see if we can move your appointment up. We need to get you looked at as soon as we can."

...

Naturally Hilda stayed home sick from school.

Later that evening the doorbell rang, and Johanna answered it.

"David?" Johanna said. "What are you doing here?"

"Hilda wasn't in school today and I just wanted to make sure she was alright." David said.

"Oh, that is very sweet of you David." Johanna said. "But Hilda is feeling a bit under the weather today. I don't know that she is in any condition to being seeing anyone right now."

"Mum who's at the door?" Hilda walked up from behind her mother.

"Wow you do look sick." David said.

Hilda coughed into her hand. "It's just a cold I'm sure."

Meanwhile the invisible creature watched them from a distance. Sensing their body heat.

"Are you sure it's not something more serious?" David asked.

"I just need some rest I'll be better soon." Hilda assured him. "I really would love to hang out with you today, but I really don't feel well, plus I don't want you to get sick."

As David walked home from Hilda's he heard something. At first, he thought I was in his head, but it was definitely coming from somewhere.

It has Hilda's voice. "Plus, I don't want you to get sick." It was repeated a couple times then stopped.

"Hilda? Was that you?" David asked.

"Man, someone really didn't like this guy." A man's voice came from the blue.

David got scared and ran off.

...

Johanna was able to get Hilda into the doctor's the next day.

The doctor took some tests, Hilda and her mom sat in the doctor's office feeling very nervous.

"Don't worry mum." Hilda said. "I'm sure it's nothing."

Hilda started to cough, and Johanna gave her daughter a hug.

The doctor came in with a sorrowful look on his face.

He was a younger doctor, with brown hair and a handsome face.

"Hi Hilda, my name is Doctor Nusbaum." The doctor said.

"Hello." Hilda said.

"I have some bad news." Doctor Nusbaum said. "Hilda is really sick."

"Well we know that." Hilda interrupted. "Why am I sick?"

"Well we don't know yet." The doctor said. "But your white blood cell count is through the roof. We will need to keep Hilda over night to run some tests."

"Overnight?!?!" Hilda said.

"It's alright Hilda, I'll stay with you the whole night." Johanna said.

"That is a good idea." The doctor said. "What's best is for Hilda to be calm and relaxed. We don't need her body to be under any more stress."

Just then a nurse came in.

"Doctor we need you, it's an emergency." The nurse said.

"I'll be write back." The doctor said.

The doctor left the room.

"Someone came in, it looks like they've been mauled by a bear, or a troll or something." The nurse said. (Trolls being a common thing in this world.) "He seems delirious or something, he keeps going on about, well, you'll see"

A man was brought in on a stretcher, he had huge gashes in his chest and on his neck. He was losing a lot of blood.

"What happened?" The doctor asked.

"It was not of this world." The man said. "It came from nowhere, and everywhere."

"What?"

"Beware the echoes!" The man said. "Beware the echoes!" Then he died.

...

The Librarian, a young woman with short black hair (with purple highlights) a grey shirt with white sleeves, grey leggings, a grey skirt, and a black poncho. Was working late in the library.

She was the only one in the library, she was just about to close up for the night when she heard the clicking.

Ttttdtdddddddddddd.

"Hello." She said in her French accent. "Is anyone there?"

"Is anyone there?" A voice repeated what she had said, sounding oddly like her own voice.

"The Library is closed, you cannot be here!" The librarian warned. She wondered the library to see who was skulking about.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU!?!?" a voice, a man's voice this time.

"I am the librarian, and I am getting pretty mad." The librarian said. Then she saw something truly haunting.

A book on one of the tables opened itself. The pages turned as if something unseen was reading it.

The pages turned faster and faster. Then the book shut itself violently. The librarian could feel something staring at her, studying her.

More clicking.

The librarian looked at the books on the desk. They were all books on the various creatures and legends of Trollburg. She took a couple steps back, then bolted for the exit.

"Huhahahahaha!" she heard the insidious laughter just as she left the building.

...

Doctor Nussbaum came into Hilda's hospital room.

It was late, and Hilda was sleeping. Her mother sat on the chair next to her.

"Did the tests come back?" Johanna said.

"Yes, they did." The doctor said. "And we found something a bit odd. Has Hilda been around any tide mice?"

Hilda woke up. "What's going on?"

"Yes actually." Joanna replied. "There was an incident with some tide mice a while back, why?"

"Well we think Hilda has something we call Tide Mouse disease." Doctor Nussbaum said. "Well at least that's the street name. The real scientific name is really long and complicated. As most diseases are."

"Tide mouse disease? What's that?" Hilda said.

"Well." The doctor said. "Tide mice carry a certain parasite. It's harmless to the mouse, but if it moves to a human, it can be quite fatal. It's very rare, and we understand very little about it."

"FATAL!" Joanna gasped.

"So, what? Are you going to do surgery to get the parasite out?" Hilda asked.

"Well it's not just one parasite." The doctor informed her. "It's millions of really tiny parasites, almost microscopic. Buy now they would be all over your body. We can't get them out with surgery, and they're resistant to any medicine we have."

"So, Am I going to die?" Hilda asked.

"I'm sorry." The doctor said. "But when patients of this start showing symptoms, they usually only have a few weeks left to live."

(Doctor Nussbaum was from an episode of Drake and Josh where Drake impersonated a doctor named Doctor Nussbaum. So basically, he's Drake Bell as a doctor.)
