Prologue: A Confession & Farewell

Let us begin this story of Devils & Angels, Fallen Angels & Yokai, Humans & The Supernatural, and Devil Fruits & Science by meeting the young man who is the grandson of the world's smartest man! What is his life like in the small town of Kuoh? How will it change drastically?

In Japan was the quaint town of Kuoh, a seemingly unassuming town like any other in any other part of the world. However Kuoh held a rather unique secret unbeknownst to the majority of humanity. Kuoh was a town inhabited by the Supernatural. Demon, Angels, and Fallen Angels all existed in this quaint little town, a shaky peace between the three factions. All of this completely unknown to humanity. Despite the nature of these supernatural beings they firmly tried to stay out of human affairs as much as possible as to not disrupt the lives of civilians. However there are humans aware of the existence of these beings and are preparing countermeasures to defend humanity in case any of these powerful individuals decide to bring harm to humanity.

Rooftop
On the roof of Kuoh Academy stood a young man who appeared to be around eighteen years of age. He had short brown hair and curious green eyes that scanned the sky above him. He had a pair of goggles resting on his forehead and he was dressed head to toe in the uniform of Kuoh Academy.

(A/N: Left image appearance, right uniform.)

This young man was Astro Vegapunk, however when at school he went by the last name Quinn. Astro stared up at the sky above, watching the clouds lazily float through the air. "To think, my last day in Kuoh is upon me tomorrow, I have everything I need packed up for the trip. However I still need to inform Issei once I am finished with my other objective." Astro thought to himself as he continued to stare up at the sky above. Classes had ended twenty minutes ago, Astro would usually already be on his way home at this point, but there was a matter he had to take care of before he left Kuoh for an unforeseen amount of time.

Astro let out a tired sigh, a minor look of frustration spread across his face. "Mother and father simply think they can accept a promotion to another country and drop me on grandpa as if it was changing the batteries in a remote. I swear I must be an inconvenience to them." Astro thought to himself bitterly as he continued to gaze at the clouds floating by. Astro's relationship with his parents was far from ideal, both opting to focus more on their careers rather than taking care of their son. "At least grandpa seemed excited about me staying with him. I imagine it grows lonely sometimes without your family anywhere near you, I know that all too well." Astro thought to himself bitterly as he let another frustrated sigh escape his lips.

Astro's sulking was interrupted by the sound of the door to the rooftop opening behind him causing the teen to turn around. When Astro's eyes landed on the person who stepped foot onto the roof, his breath hitched. Standing before him was a beautiful girl with long black hair pulled back into a long ponytail, she had sultry violet eyes and was dressed in the Kuoh Academy uniform.

This young lady was Akeno Himejima, one of the two most beautiful girls in Kuoh Academy and Astro's crush. "Astro, Issei said you wished to speak to me on the roof." Akeno said in a gentle tone, a friendly smile spreading across her face, which caused Astro's face to heat up. Astro opened his mouth to speak only to quickly close it once again, his nerves spiking all of a sudden. Akeno's smile was replaced by a look of concern as she took a few steps closer to her classmate.

"Calm yourself Astro! Just say your piece and let her answer you truthfully, it is far from Rocket Science!" Astro thought to himself in an attempt to calm his own nerves, however it was having varying results of success. Akeno stopped in front of Astro before tilting her head so she could look him in the eyes. "Astro, is everything okay?" Akeno asked, worry evident in her tone, the concern showing in her eyes. Astro flinched and stood up straight upon locking eyes with Akeno, however he quickly took a deep breath before locking eyes with her once again. "A-A-Akeno Himejima, I have had a crush on you for months now. Would you do me the honor of going on a d-d-date with me?" Astro stuttered out his face turning as red as a tomato after admitting his feelings.

Akeno's widened in surprise for a moment before a flattered smile spread across her face. "Astro, I'm flattered you feel that way about me, but I am afraid I must turn you down." Akeno said in an apologetic tone as Astro deflated at her rejection, but let out a sigh of acceptance. Astro took another deep breath before he once again stood up straight and looked Akeno in the eye with an understanding expression. "That was the outcome I suspected of this plan. I suppose you are rather high above me on the societal ladder." Astro said in acceptance of his rejection despite it still stinging his pride ever so slightly. Akeno's eyes widened at Astro's response, a look of panic spreading across her face immediately. "That's not the reason at all Astro! It's for personal reasons." Akeno said in a slightly panicked tone as she waved her arms in front of her.

Astro looked at her once again, this time a look of slight confusion in his eyes. "It was very sweet of you to admit your feelings for me, but I avoid dating. I'm worried if people get too involved with me, they might end up getting hurt." Akeno explained in a gentle tone as she gave Astro an apologetic smile. Astro for his part was only confused further by this reasoning, yet he could tell Akeno was being honest. "There's clearly more to that statement, but I shouldn't pry into her personal affairs." Astro thought to himself as let out another sigh, but let a small smirk spread across his face. "I suppose I cannot be that upset if this is strictly due to personal reasons. Thank you for being honest with me Akeno." Astro said calmly as his body finally relaxing after being tense the entire time.

A relieved smile spread across Akeno's face as she relaxed as well. "Astro, you are incredibly smart and a respectful young man. I'm sure one day a wonderful girl will stumble into your life." Akeno said in reassuring tone as she flashed Astro another smile. A blush creeped ever so slightly across Astro's face at Akeno's words, causing the girl to let out a teasing giggle. "T-Thank you Akeno, I appreciate the vote of confidence. However, friends at the very least?" Astro asked as he offered his hand to the black haired beauty. Akeno once again flashed Astro a smile before taking his hand and shaking it. "Friends, Astro." Akeno said before she let Astro's hand go. Akeno then looked up at the sky, her eyes widening in realization.

"I apologize Astro, I must be going. Club activities are starting soon!" Akeno said before she made her way back to the door to the roof, waving goodbye to Astro who waved back at her. Once she was gone from the roof Astro let out a defeated sigh, once again looking out at the sky above. "At the very least, I asked, I worked up the confidence to confess and that in itself is a victory regardless of the results of said confession." Astro thought to himself as he let a small smile spread across Astro's face. Astro turned on his heel before he began walking towards the door to the roof of the academy. He wasn't done after all, he had to speak to his best friend before he could return home for what will probably be the last time.

Academy Gate
Astro exited the school grounds, his school bag slung over his shoulder as he walked through the gate. "Yo Astro! How did it go with Akeno?" A male voice asked as Astro turned to look at a boy leaning against the gate. He was around his age, had messy brown hair and light brown eyes, he wore a Kuoh Academy uniform.

This was Issei Hyoudou, Kuoh Academy's resident pervert and Astro's best friend since childhood. "Mission failed I'm afraid Issei." Astro said with a shrug of his shoulders. Issei immediately deflated at his friend's words, a look of defeat on his face. "I'm sorry man, I thought she'd say yes. Guess I really screwed the pooch on this one." Issei said scratching the back of his head in slight frustration with himself. Astro however merely waved his friend's concern off, it was over and he had moved on. "On the contrary, I appreciate you for setting up the meeting. Her being in the same club as you made it possible. I am just relieved I was able to get it off my chest." Astro admitted as he shot his friend a smirk, which Issei returned with a smirk of his own.

"Man you take rejection better than most guys do, guess that whole smart guy mentality helps with that. By the way, what finally motivated you to work up the nerve to finally try and ask Akeno out?" Issei asked a curious look in his eyes. Astro stiffened at the question, this was the part he was dreading, Issei was one of the few who knew what his parents were like. Astro let out a defeated sigh before playing with the goggles on his forehead nervously. "I am leaving Kuoh tomorrow to stay with my grandfather for the foreseeable future. My parents are moving to a different country for business and decided to drop me on my grandfather instead of taking me with them." Astro explained nervously as he studied his best friend, trying to gauge his reaction.

A blank expression spread across Issei's face, the teen obviously taking a moment to process what he had just been told. However that blank expression quickly contorted into a face of barely restrained rage. "Are they freaking for real?! They just screw off to some other country and drop you on your grandpa?! Seriously they could at least pretend like they're parents for once!" Issei ranted as he punched the gate in his anger. Astro simply remained silent, knowing it was best to let his friend get his rage out of his system rather than try and talk him down. After another five minutes of ranting, Issei finally calmed down and let out a defeated groan. "Man this sucks! We were supposed to graduate, I was supposed to become the Harem King and you were supposed to become the Science King! Guess we gotta accomplish those goals on our own now." Issei groaned in defeat as he kicked a nearby stone in a dejected manner.

Astro despite his negative feelings towards the whole situation couldn't help but let out a snicker at his best friend's antics. "What's done is done Issei, I just have to accept it at this point. It's not all terrible however, I get to see my grandpa again. The last time I saw him I was only seven years old." Astro said as an excited smirk spread across his face, despite his nonexistent relationship with his parents, he's always been close with his grandpa. Issei let a smirk spread across his face as well, he was also one of the few people who knew Quinn was in fact not his real last name. "I mean getting to go the private island of the World's Smartest Man sounds like one hell of a vacation! Bet you'll get to create all kinds of awesome stuff there!" Issei said enthusiastically as his mood quickly sifted back to his usual upbeat self.

Astro simply let a content smile rest on his face as he leaned against the wall next to Issei. "I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited, I have never set foot on my grandpa's island before. I can only wonder what scientific marvels await me there." Astro said in a wistful tone as he once again looked up at the sky above. A smirk spread across Issei's face before he slapped Astro on the back. "Right, it's settled then! Tonight we're throwing you a going away party! Dinner at my place tonight!" Issei said in an enthusiastic tone as he stood up straight and stretched ever so slightly. Astro on the other hand was completely taken aback by Issei's offer as he should be starting his club activities around this time of the day.

"Don't you have club activities to attend to?" Astro asked as Issei simply grabbed him by his left arm and began dragging him away from Kuoh Academy. "It's fine, I'll give the Prez a call and tell her you're leaving tomorrow and I wanna send you off properly! Now come on we have a party to start!" Issei said in an upbeat tone as he continued to drag Astro towards his house. The timid genius couldn't help but let an appreciative smile spread across his face. While most people only saw Issei as a pervert, Astro knew the truth about his friend, he was a good person at his core. "I suppose there is no talking you out of this, very well, let the festivities begin!" Astro said surrendering himself to his friend's scheme. Issei cheered before wrapping his arm around Astro's shoulders as they continued their trip to the Hyoudou residence.

Hyoudou Residence
After a half hour of walking, Astro and Issei finally found themselves inside Issei's home. "Mom, dad I'm back!" Issei called out as the duo walked through the front door, Issei kicking his sneakers off while Astro untied his and neatly set them by the door. The two teens walked down the hall before turning into the living room where they found Issei's parents seated on the couch.

"Oh! Astro, I didn't know Issei had invited you over. Issei, don't you have club activities? Don't tell me you're already shirking those responsibilities!" Miki, Issei's mother said shooting her son a glare. Issei let out a frustrated groan as he should've known his mother would react this way. "No mom, I skipped because we need to have an emergency party for Astro." Issei said in a slightly annoyed tone, still not happy he was being accused of being a bum. Miki and Issei's father both looked at their son and his best friend in confusion.

"Did we forget his birthday?" Gorou, Issei's father asked shooting the duo a confused look. Astro let out a gentle laugh, he always appreciated how much concern Issei's parents showed him, it was nice considering how his own parents were with him. "No Mr. Hyoudou, I am merely leaving Kuoh Town tomorrow to live my grandfather on his island for the foreseeable future. My parents are moving to another country for business, this was their solution in regard to me." Astro explained as both Gorou and Miki's eyes widened in shock before their expressions turned rather grim. Astro and Issei both grimaced knowing what was about to transpire next. Miki grit her teeth as she quickly stood up from the couch, a deadly glare plastered across her face.

"Of all the stunts they've pulled this one has to be the worst! I told you we should've informed the authorities about those two neglecting Astro!" Miki shouted as she turned to her husband, rage evident on her face. Gorou let out a sigh as he leaned back into the couch. "You act like I don't want to see those two get some kind of repercussion for effectively abandoning their kid for most of the year, but you know they'll lawyer up with the best money they can buy." Gorou reasoned as Miki deflated at her husband's words, knowing he was correct. Before the two adults could continue their discussion however, Issei let out a cough, once again grabbing their attention. "Mom, dad, kind of not the reason I brought Astro here." Issei said in a flat tone as both his parents then turned their attention back to Astro, who had an expression the screamed embarrassed on his face.

"Oh Astro I'm sorry. Please join us for dinner. Gorou and I can even see you off to the boat tomorrow if that would help." Miki said in a concerned tone, looking at her son's best friend in worry. Astro scratched the back of his head in slight embarrassment as at all the fuss being made over him. "If it is not too much trouble Mrs. Hyoudou, it would be greatly appreciated." Astro said before he quickly bowed to his best friend's parents. Gorou for his part let out a chuckle at Astro's formal behavior. "It's no trouble Astro, we've known you since you were in elementary school! Now come on take a seat!" Gorou said as he gestured for his son and Astro to take a seat in the living room. Astro and Issei both sat down while Miki returned to the kitchen to check on dinner.

"So you are finally going to that mysterious island your grandfather owns. Are you nervous?" Gorou asked as he shot Astro a curious look. A small embarrassed blush spread across Astro's face as he scratched the back of his head. "Truthfully I'm excited, I have dreamed of visiting Egghead Island for quite some time now, while the circumstances of my first visit are less than ideal, it is still thrilling regardless." Astro admitted truthfully as he looked down at his lap somewhat meekly. Gorou and Issei both chuckled at Astro's expense. Astro simply rolled his eyes, knowing all too well he'd earn a few laughs for his confession. "It's understandable you would be excited, I imagine the island is a scientist's paradise. You should make the most of the experience Astro." Miki said as she poked her head out of the kitchen briefly.

Astro let a small smirk spread across his face, alongside Issei himself, Mr. and Mrs. Hyoudou were the only people in Kuoh that knew his grandfather was Dr. Vegapunk, the smartest man in the world. Astro usually didn't share this information with anyone, considering how everyone in the world wanted to get close to Vegapunk, meaning he would be a target if his family was public knowledge. "It's gonna suck not having you around anymore. Seriously I was hoping to see you sweep the Science Fair!" Issei said dejectedly, hiding the fact he would miss his friend by sounding disappointed he wouldn't be at the school science fair. "Is that why you're mad or are you just upset he won't be here to help you with your homework?" Miki quipped as she once again poked her head out from the kitchen.

"I'm not that petty mom!" Issei barked as he shot up from his chair shooting a glare at his mother, who just giggled in response before disappearing back into the kitchen. Astro finally felt himself relax as he allowed himself to let out a chuckle at his friend's antics. Astro then grabbed the goggles that rested on his forehead before taking them off and looking at them. "Issei, catch." Astro said calmly as he tossed his goggles to Issei, who clumsily caught them. Issei looked at the goggles before looking at Astro in confusion. "Why are you giving me your goggles?" Issei asked in complete confusion, not at all understanding the gesture Astro was trying to make. Astro merely smirked as he leaned back in his chair, a smile on his face.

"Consider it a promise of sorts. I leave those goggles with you and in return when I set foot back in Kuoh, I expect them to not have a scratch on them, understand?" Astro said in a casual tone, the smirk never leaving his face. Issei's eyes widened in realization before a smirk of his own spread across his face. Issei put the goggles on, letting them dangle around his neck. "You got yourself a deal Astro!" Issei said confidently as he walked up to Astro before giving him a high five. Gorou smiled as he knew nothing would break up Astro and Issei's friendship, not even being on completely different landmasses. "Alright you three, help me set the table! Dinner is almost ready!" Miki called from the kitchen as the three men got up from their seats and made their way to the kitchen to help set the table. Astro let a smile spread across his face, it was nice to have people who were willing to send him off on his next big adventure.

So Astro decided to work up the nerve to confess to his crush before he left Kuoh Town to live on his grandfather's island. He also was given a farewell dinner by his best friend and his family. Of course Astro has a big journey ahead of him as he arrives at Egghead Island. As always leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments! What awaits Astro on Egghead Island?
