Experiment 2: Egghead's Finest? The Punks!
Last time Astro arrived on Egghead Island and met with one of his grandfather's students and reunited with his grandfather proper. Now on Egghead, Astro must learn to adapt to his new home for the foreseeable future. However who else will he cross. Paths with.
A new had begun on Egghead Island as the sun began to rise. Within the laboratory on top of the giant cloud over the island was one of the ten bedrooms in the laboratory. Everything within it was outfitted with technology that far surpassed anything any country had access to.
Sleeping within the bed in the center of the room was Astro whose chest gently rose and fell in his sleep. The wall behind the bed then displayed the time being seven-thirty in the morning as the numbers then combined into a sun as a peaceful jingle began playing. Astro's eyes opened as he sat up in bed, letting out a gentle yawn before he looked around the room. "Still can't believe I'm actually here." Astro mumbled to himself as he stretched. Astro then threw his legs over the side of the bed before he stood up and walked over to a pair of double doors.
Astro walked up to the doors as they automatically slid open and Astro stepped into the small cylindrical room. The doors shut behind him as mechanical arms ejected from the walls, each one holding an article of clothing. In a matter of seconds the arms changed Astro out of his lounge wear and into more proper clothing, a lab coat being the last piece of clothing placed on his body.
"This should do rather nicely for lab work, hopefully I won't disturb the natural flow of research here." Astro mumbled to himself as he adjusted the white gloves adorning his hands. Astro's rambling was interrupted by a knock on the door to his bedroom. "That must be grandpa coming to make sure a woke up." Astro mumbled to himself as he walked over to the door to his bedroom. Astro pressed his hand against the fingerprint scanner as the door slid open. Astro turned his attention towards the doorway, only for his eyes to widen in surprise when he found it was not his grandfather waiting for him on the other side of the door.
Standing in the hallway was a rather tall man, he wore a large dark blue hooded jacket, with yellow lines going down it. He wore a pair of black DOM Shoes, the strange boots that his grandfather and everyone on the island wore. However the most notable feature was the helmet the figure wore, a large "01" printed on the front of it.
"Good morning Astro Vegapunk, it is a pleasure to finally meet you." The man said as he offered his hand to Astro who took it before shaking it. "The pleasure is mine, I'm assuming you are another one of my grandfather's students?" Astro asked as he gave the man a curious look. The man in the helmet nodded his head before he released Astro's hand. "Right you are, my name is Shaka, I am designated as Punk 01, I suppose I was the first of your grandfather's students." Shaka explained as Astro nodded his head in understanding. Astro stepped out into the hallway as the door to his room closed behind him automatically.
"I surmise that you expected your grandfather to come and fetch you yes? Dr. Vegapunk had business to attend to on the lower sector of the island, known as the Fabriophase. He was rather distraught he could not greet you himself." Shaka explained as he and Astro began walking down the hallway towards the kitchen. Astro however merely rolled his eyes at Shaka's words, not surprised at all that his grandfather was upset his plans were disrupted. "Being the lead scientist on the most advanced island in the world must be a demanding job I imagine. I appreciate that you and the other Punks are here to help grandpa, if only a little bit." Astro said as he directed an appreciative smile at Shaka. Shaka for his part merely let out a good natured chuckle at Astro's words.
"You give us to much credit, working under your grandfather is a thrilling experience, there is no creative restrictions with him." Shaka explained with respect evident in his tone for the legendary scientist. Astro let out a gentle chuckle at that, it certainly sounded like his grandfather's mentality towards the scientific world. "That aside I would like to apologize on Lilith's behalf. My fellow Punk is rather aggressive in her pursuit of science. I detest her shakedown attempts on passing vessels, to think she would've taken your money if you had not identified yourself." Shaka said in an apologetic and frustrated tone over Lilith's antics. Astro however cocked his head to the side in confusion at Shaka's words.
"There's no need to apologize, Lilith has been rather friendly to me, if not a bit forward. She seems like a nice enough person." Astro said in a dismissive tone as Shaka turned to look at him in surprise underneath his helmet. Before Shaka could respond however, footsteps approaching the duo from behind could be heard. "At least someone appreciates my natural Charisma! You could learn a thing or two from him Shaka!" Lilith said as she wrapped her arm around Astro's shoulder, shooting him a teasing wink. Astro's face heated up in embarrassment while Shaka merely let out a frustrated sigh at his colleague's antics. "You constantly terrorize any passing by vessels in your attempts to secure further funding, have you no conscious?" Shaka asked in an annoyed tone as he shot a glare at the female scientist under his helmet.
Lilith for her part shot a glare right back at her fellow Punk. "You could stand to get that stick outta your ass Captain Killjoy! If you looked up the definition of Boy Scout in the dictionary there would be a picture of you next to it!" Lilith fired back, venom clearly evident in her tone of voice. Shaka clenched his fists, but merely let out a resigned sigh, he had no intentions of getting caught in a childish argument with his fellow student. Astro for his part watched the two Punks bicker, he could tell these two obviously shared very different views on how to operate as scientists. "You both make valid points, Lilith, blatantly threatening people does not reflect well on the research you perform. Shaka, Lilith through her unorthodox methods prevent anyone who wishes to steal grandpa's research from setting foot on this island." Astro said calmly as he hoped to get the duo to stop arguing.
Lilith and Shaka looked at Astro, then at each other before letting out a defeated sigh. "I suppose you are correct, everyone approaches science differently." Shaka said in resignation at Astro's statement. The trio continued walking, but once again heard footsteps approaching their location. A rather short figure in a rabbit themed helmet quickly scurried up to them.
"Shaka, Lilith we have an unforeseen issue! Atlas is throwing a temper tantrum! It's impossible to get any work done with her incessant yelling!" The short figure said in an urgent tone as he stopped in front of the trio. Astro studied the short figure closely, not sure if he was human or machine. The short figure then took notice of Astro, who quickly approached. "Where are my manors? My name is Edison! I am one of two robots built by Dr. Vegapunk to assist in his research, I am designated as Punk 03! It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance Astro Vegapunk!" Edison said in an enthusiastic tone as he offered his hand to Astro.
Astro took Edison's hand, feeling the familiar cool touch of metal as he shook hands with the short robot. "Edison, you mentioned Atlas was throwing another tantrum? Where is she located?" Shaka asked in a serious tone as he waited for the short robot to give him an answer. Edison quickly whipped around to face Shaka, his eyes once again taking on a more serious nature to them. "Atlas is currently in the kitchen, one of the food dispensing machines is malfunctioning. It has Atlas rather distressed." Edison explained as both Shaka and Lilith let out a frustrated groan at that information. Lilith then turned to look at Astro, a concerned look evident in her eyes. "You should probably wait here, Atlas is a real danger when she's throwing a temper tantrum." Lilith explained the concern seeping into her words.
Astro look at Lilith before simply shaking his head, refusing to simply wait. "It would be easier if all of us went. The more people present, the easier finding a solution will be." Astro reasoned as all three Punks looked at the teen's logic. Lilith however walked up to him, a stern expression on her face. "What happens if you get caught up in Atlas's temper tantrum?" Lilith asked in a serious tone, she leveled a glare at Astro as he spoke. A gentle smile spread across Astro's face as locked eyes with Lilith. "I'm sure you'll be able to keep me safe." Astro said with confidence as he continued to smile at Lilith. The female scientist's eyes widened in surprise before her lips quirked up into a smirk. "Fine, guess I'm babysitting you then." Lilith said before they all ran off to the kitchen to calm Atlas down.
Kitchen
Much like the rest of the laboratory, the kitchen was technologically advanced, however Astro was not focused on this. No his attention was firmly on the source of all the issues in the kitchen. She appeared to be a young girl with floppy downward animal ears, her short curly hair was white on the left side and pink on the right side, she had big blue eyes, and an animal tail that matched her ears. She wore a pink dress with white sleeves, pink DOM Shoes, and what appeared to be a jetpack on her back. However what made her different then a standard child, was the fact she was massive in size, Astro guesstimating he only reached her knees.
"So that's Atlas? Why is she so big?" Astro asked curiously as he looked to Shaka for answers.
Shaka let out a sigh before he turned to face Astro. "Atlas and another one of our colleagues were working on a growth serum. Atlas accidentally consumed the untested prototype, this led to her growing to a massive size. Since animal DNA was a main component, her ears changed and she grew a tail." Shaka explained as Astro looked at him in slight concern, while the results of the serum were certainly impressive, it was unfortunate Atlas became an unknowing test subject. "DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!" Astro and Shaka turned to look at Atlas, who had hot tears welling up in her eyes, Lilith standing in front of her, an annoyed expression on her face. "Listen here you little brat, you can't go around throwing a temper tantrum because your favorite food dispenser is busted! You're a scientist, try and act like it!" Lilith barked as she shot a glare at the oversized scientist.
The tears began running down Atlas's face as she punches the wall next to her, leaving a large dent in it. "SHUT UP! YOU CAN'T BOSS ME AROUND! LEAVE ME ALONE!" Atlas shouted as she began breathing heavily, her tear filled eyes narrowing as she glared down at Lilith. Shaka however let out a frustrated groan at Lilith's actions. "As usual zero tact from her. I best intervene before she makes the situation worse." Shaka grumbled in frustration at his colleague's brash nature. Before Shaka or Edison could move to diffuse the situation however, Astro stepped towards Lilith and Atlas. "Should we prevent Astro from approaching Atlas? It would not be good if he were injured on our watch." Edison said nervously as he turned to look at Shaka.
Shaka however raised his hand to stop Edison's rambling, he was curious to see what Vegapunk's grandson had in mind. Astro walked up to Lilith before gently pushing her behind me. "The hell are you doing?" Lilith snarled as she glared at Astro, however it was not out of anger, but concern. Astro merely smiled at her over his shoulder before turning his attention towards Atlas who still had tears welling up in her eyes. "Hello Atlas, having a rough morning are we?" Astro said in a gentle tone as he held eye contact with the large girl. Atlas sniffled before her eyes narrowed slightly as she studied Astro. "Who are you?" Atlas grumbled, still emotionally out of sorts from her tantrum. Astro remained calm despite facing down someone much bigger than himself.
"My name is Astro Vegapunk, you seemed upset and I was concerned as to why." Astro spoke in a soothing tone as Atlas's eyes widened a bit in surprise, but they quickly became downcast once again. "T-The waffle dispenser is broken." Atlas whimpered in a mixture of embarrassment and sadness as she looked down at her feet. Astro let a smile spread across his face before he walked up to Atlas and rested a hand on the side of one of her DOM Shoes. "I can understand why that'd be upsetting. Would it make you feel better if I sat with you until it's fixed?" Astro offered as he gently patted Atlas's DOM Shoe. Atlas looked at Astro in surprise before quickly scooping him up into her hands and pressing him against the side of her face in what Astro assumed was her version of a hug.
"Thank you Astro, I would like that." Atlas said gently as she continued to cradle Astro in her hands. Shaka, Lilith, and Edison stood there stunned as no one but Dr. Vegapunk himself could calm Atlas down that fast. "How the hell did you pull that off?!" Lilith asked completely dumbfounded over the current developments. Astro merely smiled at the trio as he found the solution rather simple. "So problems require a more emotional solution rather than a scientific solution. I simply wanted to make sure Atlas was okay." Astro explained as Shaka, Lilith, and Edison's eyes all widened in realization. The solution was rather simple, but they all looked at it logically instead of emotionally.
The group was broken out of their revelation however by the sound of footsteps approaching their location. Everyone turned to see another robot. This one was red and tan in color, had a jetpack on its back, and wore red DOM Shoes.
"Crisis averted everyone, I was able to fix the waffle dispenser." The robot said calmly as Atlas's eyes lit up before she gently set Astro down on the ground before making her way over to the dispenser. The robot turned to look at Astro, both of them studying one another before the robot approached Astro and offered his hand to the teenager. "Greetings Astro Vegapunk, I am Pythagoras, a robot built by your grandfather. I am designated as Punk 04, a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Pythagoras said in a calm manner as Astro took hold of the robot's hand before shaking it.
"The pleasure is mine Pythagoras, thank you for fixing the dispenser for Atlas." Astro said as he gave the robot an appreciative smile. Pythagoras gently patted Astro on the shoulder in an appreciative manner. "Thank you for keeping her calm while I repaired it. She has torn entire rooms apart during some of her outbursts." Pythagoras admitted as he was relieved to see the kitchen still mostly in a presentable state of being. Their conversation however was interrupted by a loud yawn and the sound of footsteps. Lilith let out an annoyed groan as a frustrated expression spread across her face. Astro turned towards the sounds of the footsteps and was once again taken aback. A girl that stood at sixteen feet tall entered the kitchen she had long blonde hair done up in twin tails and lazy blue eyes. She wore a purple crop top, purple bikini bottoms, and orange jacket and matching orange DOM Shoes.
Astro turned towards Shaka as he was starting to put the pieces together. "I'm assuming she is the colleague that worked with Atlas on the Growth Serum?" Astro asked in a deadpan tone as he received a nod of confirmation from the male scientist. The tall woman lazily looked around the room before her gaze landed on Astro, a smirk spreading across her face. The woman walked up to Astro before squatting down so she was more eye level with him. "So you must be Dr. Vegapunk's grandson? My name is York, I'm designated as Punk 06, or whatever. Nice to meet ya." York said as she offered her hand to Astro. Astro took the tall girl's hand before shaking it, however as they shook hands York's head leaned forward as she dozed off.
"She feel asleep mid conversation?" Astro said to himself in disbelief at the sight of the tall woman passing out while squatting down in front of him. "Get used to that, York's the laziest person on this damn island. I still don't know how someone so lazy can be as smart as she is." Lilith growled in frustration as she shot a glare at the taller girl. Astro only found himself more confused over the whole situation, but decided to merely accept it for the moment. A snort was heard as Astro turned and saw that York had woken up from her little nap. "Oops, dozed off for a second there. Sorry about that!" York said as she gave Astro a wink while sticking her tongue out of the side of her mouth. Astro gave a half smile in response, still unsure of how to react to this strange girl.
"Hey I gotta question for you. Don't you think scientists should sell their inventions? I mean science requires funding, what better way to secure that funding than to sell completed projects? Better than letting them sit around and collect dust right?" York said in a lazy tone as she tilted her head to the side a curious look on her face. Before Astro could respond however Shaka stepped forward. "York, Dr. Vegapunk has made it explicitly clear that all inventions we make are not to be distributed. The potential abuse of their functions could prove disastrous." Shaka reasoned calmly as York shot him an annoyed glare. Astro quickly got the impression that this was a frequently argued topic between the Punks.
"Oh cut the holier then thou crap Shaka! Dr. Vegapunk constantly lectures us on the importance of science helping people. But then at the same time he refuses to distribute any of the things we invent! Not the mention it makes our funding lack luster half the time." York grumbled in annoyance, clearly fed up with this debate. Astro for his part heard both sides of this argument and could at the very least understand where both of them were coming from. "If I may speak truthfully, you both make valid points. Science should be used to help people, therefore inventions should be distributed in order to improve people's lives." Astro stated as a rather smug smirk spread across York's face at Astro's words.
"See someone agrees with me!" York said smugly as she stuck her tongue out at Shaka. Astro however coughed, once again grabbing everyone's attention. "However science can also hurt people, so it is paramount that you do not simply distribute inventions to the highest bidder, but to those who are of good moral compass. What is the point of creating something to help humanity if it ends up being used to cause harm to humanity?" Astro followed up his first statement as York deflated at his second message. The other Punks however were more surprised, despite being a teenager, Astro had a surprisingly mature viewpoint on science as a whole. "Yup definitely Dr. Vegapunk's grandson, welp I'm hungry. Let's eat breakfast!" York said before she made her way over to the food dispensers. Astro watched the other Punks join her, he couldn't help but find his grandpa's students to be quite the eccentric bunch. However that only made him more excited to work with each of them.
So Astro has met all of the Punks, his grandfather's students as he now sets his sights on beginning his research and development of new technology. However his Grandfather still has to reveal what secret Kuoh Town holds to his grandson. As always please leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments! What awaits Astro as he continues to adapt to his new life on Egghead Island? What secrets will his grandfather reveal to him? How is his friend Issei holding up back in Kuoh?
