Heartbroken

---Dream's POV----

I glanced at the clock and frowned. Nightmare should be back by now...

He had suddenly left earlier saying he wanted to check on something, he's been gone for ages. Much longer than he should have been gone for. Almost two hours.

I looked down at my book and tried to continue reading, but I just ended up looking at the clock again and worrying. The sun had begun to set and it was beginning to get dark.

Nightmare isn't afraid of the dark or anything. In fact he loves the night time more than the day. I swear if he had the choice he'd be nocturnal. So I'm not worried about him being out in the dark, its more me I'm worried about. Sounds selfish I know, but whenever I'm left alone in a big house like this I start to freak out.

The smallest noises make me jump and go tense, even a shadow can put me on edge when I'm home alone. But at night...at night everything's so much worse.

Things are creepier and sounds seem louder. Even stupid stuff like the wind making the branch of a tree tap the window pane makes me terrified, thinking there's someone outside trying to get in.

I sat there tensely, thinking of anything that could be turned threatening in this house. So far I had come up with about thirty things, and I'm sure that there are many more things I can think of.

I would hide upstairs, but then I'd have to go up the stairs. I shivered. At night, those were the worst part of the house, excluding the cold stone passageway down to the basement. That place made me so scared that I'll literally faint if someone tries to take me down. Nightmare found that out the hard way.

Plus if I go upstairs I might have to go right back down again to let Nightmare back in. I can't remember if he took the keys or not.

So I sat there, in the middle of the living room, flinching at the slightest noise or movement. I went completely tense at the sound of something creaking upstairs. I whimpered and tried to block the sounds out by humming quietly, but that just made it worse.

I practically fainted when I heard steps walking down the driveway. I prayed it was Nightmare, but my mind was making me think different things. It could be anyone. A stranger. A kidnapper. A robber.

They stopped at the door and I practically curled up on the carpet on the floor, clutching my book to my chest. I was prepared to throw it at someone if I had to.

Even though I heard the key turn in the lock I was still tense. What if someone had attacked Nightmare on his way home, stolen his keys and forced him to say where he lives?

The door opened and I sat up, the book at my side, ready to be thrown at whoever walked into the living room. I heard them shuffle around by the door, taking their time, clearly not in a rush. Sounds like the actions of a kidnapper. (Or just your brother °-°)

I really wished I hadn't left the living room door open. Now I'd only have a small warning before whoever was out there walked in. I saw a shadow brush past a crack in the door and immediately chucked the book at the door, hitting the person that walked in square in the face.

"HOLY SHI- DREAM WHAT THE HELL!?!?"

I sprang up and latched onto Nightmare. "Sorry." I mumbled. "I thought you were a kidnapper or something."

He huffed and patted my head. "You should have known its just me."

I sighed and looked down. "I know..."

Nightmare pushed me off him and walked off into the kitchen, where he stayed for a bit before coming back in with a plate of toast. I felt my mouth water and I looked up at him pleading, he just shook his head at me.

I crossed my arms over my chest and grumbled to myself, walking into the kitchen to make myself some toast.

"NIGHTMARE YOU USED ALL THE BREAD!!"

"What a shame."

I scrambled back to him and glared at him. He only smirked at me in response, then he frowned, like he'd suddenly remembered something bad.

I sat next to him and whined. He muttered something under his breath and passed me a piece of toast. I hummed happily and nibbled on it, now content.

Nightmare seemed to want to and not want to tell me something right now. He kept looking like he was going to tell me something important but then he'd stop himself and glare at nothing.

"Dream..." Nightmare muttered.

"Yes?" I looked up at him expectantly.

He looked at me with a pained expression and pulled out his phone. "Well you know I left saying I wanted to check on something? Basically I had seen Ink walking past and I was curious as to where he was going so I followed him."

I jumped. "You stalked my best friend!? That's creepy!"

Nightmare sighed. "Let's get past that bit. Anyway, he went to see Error..."

I froze but smiled. "Good for him."

Nightmare clearly sensed how forced that was and frowned. "Anyway, they went to the park together, and I still followed, curious about something. Then they went to this really secluded area I've never been to before..."

He stopped and I sniffed, already sensing where this was going. Nightmare passed me his phone and I looked down to see a picture he'd taken.

As I looked at it my heart shattered. Ink and Error were kissing. And they looked so happy. I tried to smile and say what I'm supposed to to be a good friend. 'I'm so happy for them' and 'they look so cute together'.

Instead I burst into tears and clutched Nightmare tightly. He didn't say anything, but he didn't push me away, letting me grip him tightly.

"I should have known." I muttered. "Ever since he joined our school Inks been in love with him. I saw it, I just chose to ignore it and hope..."

Nightmare sighed and patted my head softly, his tentacles curling around me in a hug. I sniffed and curled up, the tentacles acting like a blanket of some sorts.

And with that I drifted off into an agitated and restless sleep.

---Ink's POV----

I sighed, leaning against Error, looking out as the stars started properly emerging, sparkling into life and lighting up the sky. Error hummed quietly next to me and I smiled, loving this moment we were sharing.

I haven't felt this happy in ages. Its like Errors re-sparked something in me. Something good.

If I'm honest, I really wasn't thinking about how my actions could hurt anyone else I was close to.

Besides, what they don't know can't hurt them...

Right?
