Chapter 50

Chapter 50

Your POV

The gunshot went off and the music stopped again, but not for a happy reason this time. People started screaming and running away.

"Hold this. I'll be right back" I handed Ava the plate with my portion of cake and ran to the stage.

I grabbed the microphone.

"Everybody, calm down! Let's organize ourselves, okay? There has been just one gunshot so probably whoever did it is gone. Now, who was the victim?"

Some people took a step back and I could see the dead body on the floor. It was Damon.

"Um, o-okay. Someone, uh, Ava! Yes, you. Call 911 and let's all wait. They'll know what to do better than us"

Ava took out her phone and I sat on the edge of the stage.

The few people left in the room were silent as we listened to the tone of Ava's phone, which was on speaker.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"Hi, um, we are at *insert address of your megamansion* We were having a party when we all heard a gunshot and there's a dead person on the floor right now. Most of the people fled the party and I have no idea what to do now" Ava explained.

"You made the right decision on calling us. Stay put and no one moves until we get there. I've sent a team right now. They will arrive in the next five minutes. Try to keep anyone from touching the victim or any possible evidence. Thank you"

"Thank you" Ava hung up.

I stood on the stage again and grabbed the mic.

"You heard the police officer, you can either sit on the couch or grab some snacks. You! Over there!" I pointed at the person closest to the door "Lock the door so no one gets out without our noticing"

He did as I ordered and people started whispering among themselves while grabbing little snacks and sitting on stools, couches and chairs.

I neared the corpse laying on my carpet and pushed people away from it to have an empty space around Damon's lifeless body.

Not long after, I heard police sirens and I rushed to the door to open it for them. There was a steady knock on the door while I turned the key. I opened the door to find a woman in a gray suit with some officers behind her.

"I'm Detective Decker, I'll be in charge of this case. Care to tell me what happened?" She invited herself in and took out a notepad while I followed her in a hurried pace, trying to keep up with her.

"My name is y/n y/l/n and this is my house. We were having a birthday party for my girlfriend and there were a lot of people, um... We were having a good time until, well, a gun went off and most of the people ran away screaming but I managed to keep some of them in the house because they're, well, witnesses that could help you or something. This" I led her to where the victim's body was "this is who got shot, his name is- was Damon, I don't know the last name but he was my girlfriend's ex, she'll know more about him if you need help" I pointed towards Ava who had her eyes fixed on the victim.

The detective looked around the room and then back to the corpse to then turn her gaze at me.

"Do you have a guestlist?"

"I- I think so. I'll be right back" I rushed to the entrance and I found the list on a side table. I like to keep track of who is in my house, mostly when there's a party in it.

When I came back, some officers were looking for evidence, others were questioning the witnesses, a forensic scientist with a vest that had CSI written on was taking pictures of the dead body and the detective was talking to Ava.

"Here" I handed her the notebook.

"Thank you. Any unwanted guests? Surprise appearances that might not have been on the list?" she asked, while looking through it.

"Actually, yes" I remembered a few people who showed up just because they felt like it.

"Write their names and phone numbers here if you can" she gave me the notebook back along with a pen she took from one of her pockets.

I opened the last page of the list and started noting them down: Sara Dunnstock, Connor Pierce, Darla Duke, Marcus Charleston, Damon...

"Ava, you should write the rest, you know more about Damon, Dan and Simon than I do" I handed her the pen and notebook.

"Sure" she wrote their last names and checked her phone to write their numbers. She then gave the notebook back to the detective.

"Thanks"

She looked through the newly written names.

"What do you know about the victim? Is there anyone who would want to hurt him? A recent fight or argument?" she took out her notepad again.

"Well, y/n had a fight with him just a moment ago but it couldn't have been her. She was with me the whole time" Ava said.

"Anyone who hated him? Someone who would get something from his death?"

"His best friends, Dan and Simon. Damon liked to live on the edge. He did a lot of dangerous stuff so he wrote his will a few years ago just in case. His best friends have more part in it than his own family" Ava pointed out.

"Sounds like motive to me" she noted down the names "hang on a second" she gave us a nod and headed towards the CSI, who was inspecting the bullet wound.

I grabbed Ava's hand and we listened to the conversation. We both wanted to know more about this. Who would kill someone in my house at a birthday party?

"Ella" the detective called and the CSI turned around to face her "what do we have?"

"Well, the cause of death was a single bullet to the chest and by the looks of the hole it was fired by a G19 pistol, 9mm bullet, very common. The gun is nowhere to be found so the killer probably took it with them" the CSI explained.

"Usually killers leave their weapons clean of fingerprints in the place of the crime, this means our killer has no experience. Probably a first-timer" Detective Decker deducted.

"Yeah, probably"

"That could have been anyone from the party. It's not like high school teenagers have a lot of murderous experience" I said, getting a step closer.

"Are you eavesdropping?" the Detective tilted her head.

"Um, sorry. I didn't mean to. I'll step away now" I went back to Ava.

"Why would someone kill anyone under my roof? It's not like I've made anyone mad lately..." I muttered.

"Well, actually-" Ava was interrupted by the detective stepping in.

"I'm going to need to bring you two in for questioning. All witnesses gave several reasons for both of you to have anything to do with the murder" she cuffed Ava while another officer cuffed me.

Ava resisted a bit.

"Don't fight her" I told her "we didn't do it and you know it. They have no reason to arrest us. It's just for questioning. The cuffs are probably just a cautious measure. Right detective?" I tried to calm Ava down since she seemed extra nervous with the idea of being cuffed and was shaking.

"Yeah. it's protocol, sorry" she loosened Ava's cuffs a bit so they weren't too tight.

"O-okay" Ava breathed out.

They got us into the detective's car. It was weird to be behind the bars between the front and back part of the car.

Ava's knee was bouncing and she looked so pale.

"On my birthday..." she whispered.

"Ava... love..." I held her cuffed hands with mine earning a metallic sound from our cuffs hitting each other.

She turned to me with tear-filled eyes. The sight broke my heart. It was her birthday, goddamnit!

"It's going to be okay... okay?" I gave her a little kiss on her cheek for comfort.

"I-I don't know y/n... This is a murder... An actual murder..." a tear slid down her cheek.

I was going to try to comfort her but the detective beat me to it.

"Don't worry, nothing will happen to you guys. I don't know what shows or movies you've seen but this will be just some questions. If you answer them truthfully and we see that you're not dangerous, you can go back home. You're going to be alright as long as you are not the killer or an accomplice. I honestly don't think you are, there's lack of motive. No one would kill an ex-boyfriend on their own birthday, no matter how much they hate them. It will be over soon, it's just easier for us, the police, if we question you at the precinct"

"Okay..." Ava was still nervous but she was more relaxed. She took a deep breath and tightly clasped my hand.

Lizzie's POV

I woke up with a massive headache.

"It worked?! I can't believe it worked. What did you even do?" Nadine's voice was distant but it got clearer as I regained consciousness.

"It's my special hangover drink. You know it, you just don't know what it's made of. Secret of the family I'm afraid. I can't share it with anyone" Pippa's giggle at the end of the sentence was clear as I tried to open my eyes.

I slightly opened them and the bright light made me immediately close them again.

"Too bright..." I mumbled.

"Sorry" Pippa's voice went from one side to the other as I heard the curtains being closed.

At my second attempt of fully opening my eyes, two faces came into view.

"Pippa? Nadine?" My voice was hoarse and my throat hurt when talking.

"Yeah, it's us" Nadine smiled as Pippa handed me a glass of water.

"Are you okay? How do you feel?" Pippa asked.

"Tired, mostly. A bit nauseous..." I cleared my throat.

"Don't push yourself. You don't have to talk if it hurts" Pippa stroked my cheek. Her hand was warm against my cold skin.

"How long have I been out for?" I forced myself to ask even if it hurt to speak.

"Just a couple of hours" Nadine answered.

"I'm so sorry" I sighed and buried my face in my hands "You should go back to the party. I'm just- well... I'm a burden. You would be having fun right now but you stayed for literal hours watching over me... I'm a burden" I repeated.

"Lizzie, you're not. You are the most amazing person I've ever met and you deserve all the love in the world. Nadine and I just really care about you. We can't stand seeing you unwell" Pippa answered, gently making me sit up and pulling me into her in a comforting and warm hug.

"I made some tea" Nadine said "do you want some?"

"Actually, that would be nice. Thank you"

She gave me a nod and left the room to get me some tea.

"Wait" I realized something "Don't you have a show tonight? What time is it? I would hate to be the cause of you arriving late for a show night" I looked around for my phone or a clock, anything that could tell me the time.

"There's about thirty minutes left until the show starts. I can stay here for ten more and then run to the theatre. I don't mind, really" Pippa smiled, taking a good look at my face and running her soft fingers along my cheek, light as a feather.

"No, Pippa. You should get there now. I'll tell Nadine to call you if something happens but you should go do the show and rest for the next tomorrow. I'll be okay" I weakly pushed her away a bit to get her going.

"If you really want me to..." she pulled me in for a gentle kiss and she softly stroked my cheek one final time before leaving the house. It felt unreal that she was my... something. We hadn't really talked about it and our relationship had no labels yet. It was nice this way so I didn't really bring it up.

Nadine came back with the tea and sat next to me while I gave it a long sip.

"Thank you" I sighed at the feeling of warmth in my whole body.

"Of course" Nadine smiled "Well, um... If you feel okay, I should go to work. We are almost broke so I should make some money before my roommates are left without an apartment. I got a new job. Call me if you need anything. Anything at all" she gave me a kiss on the cheek and stood up.

"Yeah, sure. Good luck"

I was left alone in the apartment, just like almost everyday.

When I finished the tea, I stood up, not without effort, and put the empty cup into the dishwasher. I started overthinking, as always. What if anyone saw me take Ava's pills? What if she saw me? Oh no. What if I did something weird that I would regret if I remembered? I could almost hear my heartbeat getting faster each second. Not a panic attack now, please... It was difficult to breathe, no one was around to help me and that just made me feel smaller and vulnerable. In tears, I grabbed my phone before sliding down the wall and shrinking into myself in the corner.

I dialed the first number on my phone, Pippa.

"Sorry, Pips is on stage right now. Can I help you with something?" Jasmine said into Pippa's phone.

"N-no, it's okay"

"Lizzie? Are you crying? Are you oka-"

I cut her off by hanging up. I needed medical help. Some drugs maybe? I had nothing at home and calling an ambulance for a panic attack was too much... Oh. I know.

I clicked on the number I got for my birthday party.

"P-Pam? I-I need your help" I managed to say while tears streamed down my face.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

By the time I heard the knock on my door, the panic attack had slightly passed. I had been trying to breathe properly and focusing on my breathing took my mind off the bad thoughts for a bit. My heart was still thundering but I didn't feel the extreme tightness in my chest or overwhelming anxiety. I got up and opened the door.

"Are you okay? You didn't sound okay over the phone and you're very pale. What happened?" Pam asked.

"I just wanted to see if you knew about any... medicine that could help with anxiety? Or panic attacks?" I invited her in and closed the door behind her.

"Come here" she invited me to sit on my armchair and she put a hand on my forehead.

"Mm, you're cold" she mumbled before grabbing my wrist to feel my heartbeat "accelerated heartbeat... Could you breathe okay? Was your chest tight? Were you feeling pain around the chest area?"

"I-I could barely breathe and yes, I felt tightness in my chest and a lot of pain here" I pointed to the center of my chest.

"I know exactly what you have and it's more common than you think. Here" she took a notepad from her purse and wrote something down before ripping the page off and handing it to me.

"Propranolol. It's a beta blocker that controls the sympathetic output" she explained.

"Um... English, please?"

"It basically calms down your heart. Don't take too much though or you will lose consciousness and maybe go into a coma. You can't take more than 160 milligrams per day" she warned.

"Oh, okay. Thanks" I glanced down at the paper to see it was a prescription.

"Just take this to the pharmacy and they'll give it to you. It's not entirely legal for me to prescribe like that but I can see that you need it and I've already slept with a patient so it's not the first time I break the rules" she whispered the second sentence.

"Thank you so much. You don't know how much I appreciate it" I allowed my back to rest on the armchair completely melting into it.

"Of course, you're my friend" she smiled.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

When I felt a bit better, I got out of the house tightly clutching the prescription Pam gave me. I walked to the nearest pharmacy and put the slightly wrinkled paper on the counter. The pharmacist picked it up and read it.

"Okay, you got it" he said, looking for the pills on a shelf.

He placed a purple box with a small "40" on the side on the counter.

"Never take more than 160 milligrams in a day. I would recommend around 80 milligrams per day but you'll see if it's enough or not. $25,00"

I paid and thanked him before leaving the small pharmacy and going back to my apartment. I left Pippa a message, asking her to come over whenever she could. I didn't want to be alone but Nadine was at work and she really needed the money...

I opened the pill tablet I had just purchased and filled a glass with water.

I took two pills and downed them with big sips of water. I laid on the couch until my eyelids got too heavy and I fell asleep.

Your POV

We arrived at the police station and we went straight to the interrogation room.

"What was your connection to the victim?" the detective asked.

"I just met him. He unexpectedly showed up to the party and confronted me. He was trying to get her back" I held Ava's hand, who was taking deep calming breaths.

I gave it a soft squeeze to encourage her to speak.

"He was my- my boyfriend until half a year ago or so...um..." her voice broke sometimes. It was heartbreaking to see her like that.

"I can't believe he's dead..." a tear escaped her eyes.

"Don't cry for him Ava, he had it coming for being such an ass-" I cut myself off realizing the look on the detective's face "sorry"

"Yeah, maybe it's better if you don't do stuff like that. You're almost incriminating yourself" Detective Decker laid back on her chair.

I gulped.

"What if... what if someone wanted to frame me? Someone who had a personal grudge against me? Barely anyone in the party knew Damon. Maybe someone saw me fighting with him and decided that their way to get rid of me was to murder someone and make it look like I did it?"

"That could have happened, but whoever did it didn't take too much care. There are witnesses that saw you with Ava all along" the detective noted some things down on her document and chewed on the pen cap, thinking about it.

"But the murderer was a beginner. You said it yourself. My theory is very possible" I crossed my arms as I could with the cuffs.

"Okay, let's look at it that way. Who hates you? Give me a list of people"

"Um, Damon's friends didn't seem to like me very much. Dan and Simon. They're in the unwanted guests section in the guestlist. Uh, Darla Duke hates my guts and... I think that's it. I don't really go around looking for conflict"

"Good, that's three more suspects. You're free to go but you can't leave the country until the case is closed. We need to be able to contact you easily while the case is still active in case we need more info" she stood up and unlocked both our cuffs "thank you for the information"

"Of course" I answered.

Ava was still in shock. She had been since the gunshot went off... I put my arm around her waist and gently pushed her forward to encourage her to walk.

We took a cab and got into the house through another entrance since the police were still analyzing the hall for evidence, and got up to my room, where I tucked Ava in and laid with her until we both fell asleep. At least I did, I'm not sure if Ava slept at all that night...

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

Lizzie's POV

When I opened my eyes, I felt warm. I realized someone had put a blanket over me and tucked me in with care. A little smile crept to my face when I saw Pippa asleep on my armchair. She looked exhausted. She hadn't even bothered to take off her ponytail or makeup from the show. I wish I had a way to show her just how much I love her, how much I appreciate her just... being there for me, watching over me...

I took my blanket off me and put it around her before softly kissing her forehead and walking to the kitchen. I should cook some dinner for her. She probably hasn't eaten anything since before the show.

I decided to challenge myself and cook a hard recipe. The Johnny Vegas' fillet steak flambé. I rubbed the steaks with mixed spices and left them to marinate while I got a side salad ready and started preparing the sauce.

I was cooking the steaks when I felt a pair of hands sneak around my waist to hug me from behind. Pippa placed her head on my shoulder.

"It smells amazing" she gave me a soft and loving kiss on the neck "sorry for falling asleep"

"You're human Pippa, it's okay" I held her hand with my free hand and gave it a squeeze while I turned the steaks with the other.

"Should I set the table?" she asked.

"Oh, you don't have to. I can do it. I-"

"Lizzie, Love, I want to help" she tilted her head with a smile.

"Okay" I smiled back "The cutlery is there, plates over there and glasses are here" I pointed at drawers and cupboards.

Pippa set the table as I finished the dish. I had to admit that it turned out much better than I thought. It was a very complicated recipe and I had managed to get everything right. Maybe I should go back to Goût du Ciel... No, Lizzie. It's for the good of the restaurant. Stay away from it.

I poured the sauce over the steaks and seasoned the side salad before taking both plates to the dining room.

Pippa took the first bite.

"Wow. Oh my god. You have to teach me to cook like that. This is amazing! It-it melts in your mouth!" She took another bite.

"Thank you" I blushed "And sure, I could teach you some stuff" I smiled.

Pippa smiled back before going back to her meal. I was so glad she liked it.

"Are you going to come to tomorrow's show?" Pippa asked before getting some of her salad into her mouth.

"Actually, I could use a distraction. Yes. I'll go. Will I have the front row seat again?" I joked.

"Yeah" she apparently didn't realize that I was joking about the seat.

"Oh, wait. Really?"

"Yes. Why wouldn't you?" she smiled "Don't worry. I'll send a text to Lin after dinner, he can reserve the front row center seat for you for sure"

"Wow. Thank you. You're too kind" I blushed.

"It's not me who made dinner" she laughed " I have to pay you back somehow"

"But you're already taking such good care of me, you don't need to pay me back, I should be making it up to you" I picked at my food.

"Oh, no need for that. I'm happy to help in any way I can"

We continued our meal in comfortable silence.

She texted Lin, helped me get the dirty dishes into the dishwasher and we sat down on the couch. My head on her shoulder and her head leaning against mine while she fidgeted with my hands, just enjoying each other's warmth and closeness.

"Did something happen while I was gone? Jas told me that you called while I was performing" she ran a finger along my knuckles, tracing invisible lines on the back of my hand.

"I kind of had a little... panic attack..." I confessed, looking down to our joined hands.

"Are you okay? God, I'm so sorry I wasn't here to help you. I knew I should have stayed. I could have called my understudy to replace me but I didn't and you weren't well and- wait. Nadine left too? You were alone during a panic attack?!" I could feel the tension through her hands and her shoulder slightly shook as she got more worried by the second.

"Pippa" I gave her hand a gentle squeeze and she turned to me with tear-filled eyes "Nadine left to go to work, yes. But it's okay. I called a friend and now I have medicine to calm down. I'm okay"

A tear ran down her cheek.

"Gosh, I'm so sorry Liz... I left you alone when I shouldn't have" she sobbed while pulling me into a hug. I gently rubbed her back in circles. She was such an emotional person, it made me feel so loved.

"It's okay" I kept repeating with a smile.

She then pulled away and kissed me as if it were the last kiss we would ever share. I kissed her back with the same passion and dried her tears with my thumb.

She let out a weak chuckle.

"We should go to bed. I'm extremely tired" she sighed.

"Okay" I put an arm around her waist and led her to the bedroom.

I lent her an oversized pajamas and I changed into mine before we fell asleep, cuddling in bed.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

I was woken up by the loud ringing of my phone. I lazily rubbed my eyes and picked up quickly not to wake up Pippa, who by some miracle was still asleep after the loud ringtone.

"Miss Barnes?" a formal voice called.

"Yeah?" I let out a small yawn as my eyes got used to the light coming through the window.

"We are sorry to inform you that your mother is currently at the Lenox Hill hospital. Whom I believe were your sisters called 911 when she collapsed. She was redirected here. I would advise that you get to the hospital quickly. Your sisters have nowhere to stay now that their mom is in here"

My eyes widened, numb to the bright light coming from the window.

"I'll be there in a second. Thanks" I said, deadpan.

Was mom okay? What had happened? I rushed out of bed and quickly put on sweatpants and a plain wide shirt. Something I could throw on quickly. I put my hair in a messy bun and approached the bed to give Pippa a kiss on her forehead.

"I'll be back. I need to do something important" I whispered while tears started rolling down my cheeks.

Her eyes fluttered open when a tear fell on her cheek.

"Are you okay?" a worried look took over her face.

"Yeah, no... um- meet me at the Lenox Hill Hospital when you can. I have to go now. I'll explain better there. Bye" I gave her a kiss on the lips and rushed to the hospital, not giving her time to answer.

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

"Faster please" I pleaded to the cab driver.

"I'm going at maximum speed, lady!" he complained.

"It's an emergency!" I replied.

He didn't listen to me and went at the same speed as all the other cars.

I sank in my seat and looked through the stuff I had on me.

"Here" I handed him a bunch of $20 bills "faster"

He silently put them in his pocket and stepped on the gas, maneuvering to get between cars and advance incredibly quickly on the road. When we arrived, I handed him a fifty dollar bill and didn't look back.

I rushed through the hospital doors and hurried towards the receptionist.

"Is Christine Barnes here?" I asked, trying to keep the tears in.

"Yes, room 175. Down that corridor" she pointed the way and I thanked her before dashing down the corridor.

170, 171, 172, 173, 174... 175...

I found the room... I burst the door open to find a few doctors monitoring my mom's heartbeat and the twins, desperately crying, holding one of mom's hands each.

My heart broke in a million pieces.

"Lizzie! Is she gonna be okay?" Ashley wept.

"Yes, of course, sweetie. She's gonna be just fine..." I opened my arms for a hug but they just stared at the hands they were joining with mom, almost as if they were afraid that she would disappear if they let go...

Mom was pale, very pale. And the heartbeat that the monitor showed was slow. It was steady but slow.

"What happened?" I asked a doctor in the room.

"She had a heart attack, I'm sorry ma'am. She's stable for now but I don't know for how long she will be..."

"Well" I pushed my tears back "can' you- can't you do something? Give her some meds that will make everything okay again? A-a heart surgery? What does she need?!" I started hyperventilating.

"Ma'am-" he started warning me.

"What?! You want money? This stupid bills to make her survive?! Just- just make everything go back to normal!" I slammed a fistful of $50 bills against his chest "take my money! But please make her be okay..." I completely broke down and the money slowly fell to the floor around me.

"Ma'am, you need to calm down" he grabbed my shoulders and in an attempt to get free from his grip I caught a glimpse of the twins. They were holding on to mom like a lifeline and they had horrified expressions as they watched me panic.

I froze. I couldn't breathe. I tried to, but I couldn't. I was having a big panic attack and I didn't have my medicine.

"She can't breathe!" MK yelled with tears in her eyes.

I coughed, and took in as much air as I could but my airway was closed. I was getting dizzy.

"Lizzie!" I heard a familiar voice from the door as I collapsed into the doctor's arms.

Pippa's face came into view as she kneeled over me.

"Lizzie, follow my breathing. It's gonna be okay" she put a hand on my chest and tried to guide me through breathing exercises but my mind couldn't take being guided at this moment. I could only hear my heart beating extremely fast as Pippa's voice became distant.

"Heart rate is elevated" the doctor said after listening to my heart.

"Pro-" I tried to speak.

"What?" Pippa and the doctor got closer to my face to be able to hear me.

"Propra- Proprano- Propranolol" I managed to choke out.

"What?" the doctor hadn't heard it.

"Propranolol! That's her medicine!" Pippa said.

"Beta blockers!" the doctor shouted.

A nurse handed him a syringe with a blue liquid in it and he injected it in my arm.

I gasped, taking an immense amount of air, which made me cough but soon I was back to regular breaths. The doctor gave me my money back.

"We are doing everything we can ma'am. Keep your money. You'll need it"

"W-wait, what for?" I sat up and Pippa put her hand on my back, keeping me balanced.

"Your sisters. You're the closest family they've got and your mom can't help them now"

I could feel another panic attack coming but the medicine kept it down.

"Lizzie, don't worry. We've got this. I'll help in any way I can, okay?" Pippa rubbed circles on my back.

"Okay..." I mumbled "MK, Ash... we should go home and leave mom to rest..."

"We can't! Mom needs us and we don't want to leave her!" MK cried.

"MK..." I didn't know what to say. I understood their pain but mom needed rest and the twins too.

"Leave this to me" Pippa gave me a comforting smile and approached the twins.

She took the hands they weren't using to hold mom's and crouched to match their height. I leaned against the wall and looked down at my shoes. I couldn't even take care of myself. Who knew what kind of care I would take with the twins? What if I got them hurt?...

Questions like that haunted my mind while I half listened to the faint sound of Pippa's voice in the background, talking softly and with care.

When I came back to reality, the twins nodded, their teary eyes on Pippa, and they slowly let go of mom's hand to hug Pippa.

"You both are amazing" I heard Pippa whisper to them "Your mom and your sister are very proud of you"

.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

The twins were exhausted from crying and spending time in the hospital so we picked one of them in our arms each and they were fast asleep as we walked home in the sunny evening.

"So, what happened with your mom?" Pippa asked.

"She had a heart attack... The twins were alone with her. Thank god they knew to call the hospital..."

"We'll be alright" she said, giving me a little bump on my shoulder.

"I hope so" I sighed, looking at the street before me and realizing just how big the world was when I felt so scared and small...
