Chapter Seven- Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra
They reached Celso's car sooner than Athena had suspected them too. His car had a lot of dents in it and looked like it was ready to fall apart at any minute.
Celso leaned down and whispered in her ear. "It might look crappy, but it still works perfectly." He opened up the passenger door and motioned for her to get in. She did and waited for him to get into the driver's seat.
Derek got in the back as Celso turned the car on and they were starting down the road. Athena leaned back and watched the buildings fly by the car. Eventually, they were out of the city and on their way to Volterra. She heard Derek's camera going off every few seconds behind her.
After about two hours, they arrived in Volterra and were driving down the driveway of the Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra. Athena shivered as she remembered the driveway of the Sarton Asylum. It was almost the same. Large trees loomed overhead and the unkempt driveway was littered with leaves, weeds, and limbs laying on the ground. When they were nearing the building, they slowly drove by a single wheelchair laying on its side. It was rusty and part of its wheel was buried underneath the ground.
"Derek," Athena called to her brother as they were passing the wheelchair. "Did you get a picture of that?"
She heard a snap. "Yep."
Athena looked ahead of her and stared at the large building in front of them. This asylum was in worse condition than the Sarton Asylum. Its windows were broken and the outside walls were covered in graffiti. Vines grew up the walls and plants were dead and overgrown around the building.
They got out of the car and Derek began to walk around taking pictures. Celso stood by Athena who remained motionless where she stood.
"Is it what you expected?" Celso spoke.
Athena shrugged. "I've seen pictures of this place on the internet, but it's more surreal in person. It gives me goosebumps." She wrapped her arms around herself and shivered again. It wasn't cold outside, it was actually quite nice, but a sudden coldness passed right through her. While she was trying to figure out where the sudden chillness came from, Celso had wrapped his arms around her and was staring at her worriedly.
"Remember, I won't let anything happen to you or your brother," he whispered in her ear.
She sighed and leaned against him. She still felt cold, so she grabbed Celso's hand and dragged him along where Derek was. Strangely, the cold left her and the temperature felt normal again. She crouched beside Derek and looked at what he was taking a picture of.
It was a small rock with a name scratched into it. The name was almost unreadable as was the date underneath it.
"I'm assuming it's a tombstone," Derek mentioned thoughtfully. "There's a whole lot more down that way." He pointed towards his right and they all looked up to see a lot of tombstones placed periodically around the property. Some were tall and wide as some were small and thin. None were the same.
Athena noticed as they walked around the cemetery that the older tombstones had names scribbled across them while the newer ones had just a number.
"By the time the asylum was closed," Celso mentioned behind them. "They had more patients than they could hold. Eventually, they gave up on remembering their names and gave them numbers instead. That's how they were identified."
"That's horrible," Athena gasped as she knelt down beside a small tombstone. This one was young when he - or she - had died. She ran her hand over the numbers and shivered from another blast of cold air. She snapped her hand away from the tombstone and the normal temperature came back to her. She stood back up and walked back over to Celso. "Let's go inside now."
She let Celso lead the way into the building. Another blast a coldness came at her and made her stop in the doorway. She turned to Derek and whispered to him, "Do you feel cold?"
Derek gave her a weird look and nodded. "Yeah, I do. I feel it at certain times and then it goes back to normal."
"Do you think that that means someone's here with us?" A hand touched her back and she jumped into Derek. Derek caught her just in time and steadied themselves. Derek started laughing. "Celso!" Athena whined.
Celso had come up behind Athena as she was talking and had touched her back. He hadn't meant to scare her, but a smirk was on his face.
Athena walked by them and began to walk up the stairs. She heard Celso calling for her behind her, but she didn't stop. She had felt a sudden pull to the second floor and didn't have any power over her feet. She kept walking up the stairs. When she stepped down on one board, her foot fell through the hole. She screamed as she fell on the stairs and pulled her leg out. The pull was gone as she came to make sense of her surroundings.
Celso was the first to get to her as he took a long step over the hole and knelt down next to her. He gently grabbed her arms and helped her stand up. "Are you alright?" His eyes looked all over her with extreme worry and Athena could see a twinge of guilt mixed into his eyes.
Athena nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine." She looked up the rest of the staircase and started to walk up.
"Athena," Celso pleaded while grabbing her hand. "Are you sure you want to go up there?"
Athena nodded. "Yes. I need to go up there." She felt Celso's hand grip hers harder as she pulled him up the stairs and into the long, dark hallway. Debre littered the floor and the walls had holes in them. Graffiti was painted on the walls.
Athena walked down the hallway and ran her hands along the walls. At one point, she felt a lot of small dents in the wall. She took out a flashlight and shined it where her hand was. On the wall was a lot of tiny tick marks. It looked like someone was counting down their days until they get out of here, or died.
Celso came up behind her and felt against the tick marks. "Something's written above these." He moved her hand up until it rested on two words.
Athena moved the flashlight up to see the name, Liana Ventimiglia, scratched into the wall. The writing looked very childish. She leaned up against Celso as she took a long look at the tick marks and name.
Celso allowed her a little time to take it all in before he gently pushed her away from the wall. "Come on, I'd like to not be here when it's dark."
She let him lead her through the hallway and through many different rooms. Each room was damaged in different ways. One room, in particular, was extremely cold to Athena. In the room was a single metal chair. It was sitting upright and when Athena touched it, it was warm. A large window - more like a hole - sat on the wall behind the chair. Sunlight shone through the hole and gave the chair an even more eerie look.
"Athena," Celso started.
She turned around to look at him. He was standing at the doorway with a worried look etched into his face. He kept looking around the room and his hands were twitching.
"We need to get out of this room."
"Why?" Athena asked. She tried to move her feet but nothing happened. It was like she wasn't in control of her feet again.
Celso came up to her and tried to pry her feet away from the chair, but he couldn't get her to move either. Suddenly, he became rigid and took out a dagger.
"Celso?" Athena asked scared. "What's happening?"
Celso's eyes glazed over and for a while, he was unresponsive. Athena reached out to touch his chest and retracted her hand when all she felt was cold.
"Celso? Please, answer me!" She watched his face to see if any kind of change happened, but nothing did. She tried to move her feet again but was unsuccessful. Suddenly, hands gripped her shoulders and she looked up to see Celso looking at her. His eyes were still glazed over and his grip was rougher than she was used to.
"Don't move," his voice told her.
She did as he told her and didn't move a muscle. His eyes slowly regained their color and he eventually released a heavy breath. The grip on her shoulders loosened and they went down to her hands. He pulled her forward and her feet finally moved. They ran out of the room and little ways down the hallway before they both stopped.
Athena fell against the wall and Celso leaned on the wall beside her. She watched as he closed his eyes and his breathing returned to normal. She wrapped her hand around one of his and squeezed it.
"Are you alright?" Athena asked concerned. "What happened back there?"
Celso pulled her towards him and wrapped his arms around her. "Whatever demon was in there wanted you."
"Why?" Athena's grip around his waist tightened.
"You're vulnerable to them," he explained. "You've never had the training to defeat any kind of demon, so to them you're meat. Your soul is clean and that's what drives them towards you. I wish you wouldn't be here, Athena. It's too dangerous."
"I have to, Celso," Athena told him slowly. "It's my job."
Celso sighed and pulled her closer. "I know."
They stayed like that for a while until Athena remembered that someone was missing. "Celso, where's Derek?"
