"I'll be back to pick you up in two hours," says my mom as I stare at her serious expression, then it turns into a smile, "Have fun, sweetheart!"
I nod my head as I reach to open the car door and step out. I watch as her car drives down the road and disappears out of sight.
Before turning around, I decided to take in my surroundings. The houses in this neighborhood are a bit more rich-looking than the ones in mine. The area is mostly filled with trees because everywhere that I look, I can spot one. The houses are very identical, making it almost hard to tell the difference.
I walk in the direction of Chance's house, holding a folder with written research in it and my laptop along with a pen to my chest. I let out a nervous breath as I reach his doorstep and hold my hand up to knock on the door but stop midway.
I think I've made the biggest mistake ever by coming here, but another thought thinks I haven't, and that's not good.
I stare in surprise as my hand knocks on the door of Chance's house and I wait only for a minute when someone opens it.
My eyes widen in shock when I see no-one standing there until I hear a throat being cleared and I look down to find a little boy, who looks about six years old, standing there with his arms folded across his chest.
"I never knew it was Halloween already, though you're not that creepy," the boy says and I smile at how cute he looks. The features on his face a lot identical to Chance's.
"So, you're just going to stare at me with that mask on your face? Now that's a bit creepy..." he turns around to yell, "Mom, someone creepy is standing in our doorway!"
I look up to find a quite tall woman walking in the direction of where I and the boy, I believe to be Chance's little brother, are. She doesn't have many features identical to Chance. I could say her eyes are, though. The same deep, dark swirl that can draw anyone close to her.
"Matthew, what did I tell you about opening the door?" Matthew's mom says as she looks down at him with a small frown.
"Sorry," he says, looking up at her with a cheeky smile, and I can't help but find that adorable.
"Are you the girl that Chance has told me about? You're here to do an assigned homework with him, right?" she asks with a smile and I nod my head in reply to her questions. "Is the mask involved in the assignment, too?"
I'm about to nod my head by lying in reply, but Chance pops up just in time to save the day.
"Yeah, Mom. It's apart of the homework that we're doing," he says, looking at me with a small smile.
Matthew looks up at Chance. "Cool, are you going to add some fake blood to it, so that it could look scarier instead of plain because if you call that scary, it's not," he says, looking back at me with a cute smile momentarily to show that he's not scared at all.
"No, buddy," Chance says ruffling his hair.
Matthew looks at him with a disappointed look, "Well, that sucks..."
"My name is Lana. What's yours?" Lana says, catching me off guard. I mean, I know my name, but I'm not going to say anything to her. Not trying to sound mean.
"Her name is Annie, Mom," Chance says for me, seeming to have read my mind.
Lana opens her mouth to say something, but Chance speaks first to cut her off. "We've been standing here for a while now. Annie and I have some work to do, so see you guys later."
Chance takes a hold of my hand, leading me past his mother and brother, taking me up the stairs and into a room, which I believe to be his.
He closes the door behind him and walks over to his bed to sit on it. Not knowing what to do and feeling very awkward, I take a few steps away from the door to take a seat on the wooden floor, leaning my back against the wall.
I don't know why, but I've always found the floor to my room comfy, especially when finding that perfect position. I know it may seem weird to others now by feeling Chance's eyes on me.
I open up my laptop to power it on, trying to feel less awkward, and wait for it to come on. While I'm waiting, I decide to take a quick glance at his room. On his white walls, I notice posters of not just motorcycles, but motorcycles with quite hot girls on them or next to them. There are shelves with different types of collections of modeled motorcycles. With everything that my eyes have spotted, there's only one word that can describe Chance's room and perhaps what he likes the most in this world: motorcycles.
My laptop comes on and I start doing more research on our assigned person. Chance has also started and I can't help but feel his eyes look up from his work to me every few seconds, making me feel uncomfortable, but at the same time, weird.
After a while of doing my work and no longer feeling Chance's eyes on me, I decided to take a peek at him. He's wearing a maroon shirt with black jeans. He looks very focused on what he's doing as he looks from his laptop screen to the papers he has in front of him, writing information down. I watch as he looks up, our eyes meeting as he moves back, running a hand through his dark, brown hair that's styled into a flip, making me wonder if he's doing it on purpose or he's just naturally good at being... hot?
He smiles at me and I quickly look away, wishing that I didn't just say the word hot to myself to describe his movement.
My phone, that's just sitting next to me on vibrate, buzzes, causing me to take it up. Maybe it's my mom texting me to remind me that she'll be here in a few minutes. I click on the chat to find that it's not my mom, but Chance.
I can see that you're staring. There's no need to hide it ;)
I stare at the screen wondering if his ego is big, or if he's just teasing me or something. I take it as he's teasing me in a friendly way.
I wasn't staring... I was just... nvm, I reply, my mind blank of any excuses I could come up with.
I know that this happened a long time ago, maybe a week or so, but sometimes I wonder why you would forgive him..., he says and I look up at him, only to look back down at my phone.
Forgive who? I ask.
You've already forgotten? Chad, of course..., he answers.
Hm... I've totally forgotten. Well, you know what they say; Forgive and forget.
Yeah, you're right :), he says. He was my best bro. We've been best friends ever since we were toddlers. It broke my heart, knowing that he would do such a thing to a girl like you. I haven't spoken to him ever since that day...
I frown down at my phone in my hand, sad that he hasn't been talking to his friend all because of me. Though it's him who's decided to not talk to Chad, I don't like the idea that it's because of me.
You should talk to him. I'm sure he feels very sorry for doing it, after all, he was forced to do it, I reply, thinking of many ways on how Sandra could've forced Chad into doing it to me.
I'll try :), he messages me back, making me smile to know that he's considering it.
After a few seconds of silence, a text pops up on the screen from him, You know, you haven't thanked me.
I can't help but read the second message with him having a smirk on his face, and of course, I look up to find that smirk already plastered on his face.
Right, well, thanks for saving my butt for those times :)
Ohh, Annie for the first time sent me a smiley face..., he says and I can't help but notice, too. Maybe I'm warming up to the guy a little already, which I can't do and I need to stop it now.
Yeah, whatever...
Just in time, I see a message pop up from my mom to stop the awkwardness from building in the air. It's a message from her saying that she's outside waiting for me and I start getting my things together, knowing how much my mom hates to wait on me, especially at someone's, who she's not very familiar with, house.
A message pops up on my screen from Chance, You're leaving?
Yeah, see you at school... :), I text back as I exit his room and head down the stairs.
Yeah, he replies.
I'm only walking past the kitchen when, of course, I have to be stopped.
I turn around when I hear Lana's voice ring in my ears. "Leaving?" she asks and I nod my head. "Well, goodbye, sweetie... You can come back anytime!"
Quickly, I head for the door and leave their house. I walk to my mom's car, opening the car door to sit down, letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.
I'm glad that I got out of there before Lana asks any questions that she would want me to answer, because I wasn't going to be able to do so, and I may just run out of there like a maniac or something if I were meant to answer one.
"Was your time there okay?" Mom asks, looking at me expectantly. I hold my thumb in the air, indicating that my time at Chance's house was... good.
I look back at the house before my mom drives off, only to find Chance already staring outside, through his bedroom window, at me. The lights are on and I look closely at him to see him smiling at me. I smile back at him, though he's not able to see it with my mask hiding it, as Mom drives off.
