Chapter 23: Breaking News!

It was a beautiful early summer day, and like most other days like this one, the host club was holding an outside cosplay event for all the ladies. This time they were all dressed in clothing that was from the Heian era.

Setsuko was wearing two layers of kimonos, a white underlayer and a red top layer. The top layer was blocky, the only thing giving it shape was the white rope that was tied around her waist. Along with the costume she had a black hair extension in the form of a braid, which reached down to just below her shoulders.

The club moved on without a hitch, all of the hosts moving to their separate areas, Setsuko was walking with a few girls through the flower garden, "These flowers are quite beautiful today." She said, stopping and looking towards the sky.

"They're breathtaking." One of the girls sighed, "I really admire how colorful they are."

Setsuko looked over at the girls with a tired yet playful smile, "Oh, I wasn't talking about the Irises." She said, giving the girls a wink as she watched their faces turn completely red.

The group continued walking until it was time for the hosts to take a break, the girls waved goodbye and headed over to the tables with the other girls for tea as Setsuko moved to the other side of the garden where the rest of the hosts were gathered. As she leaned against a tree, Setsuko heard a startled shout and she looked towards the source, seeing Tamaki pushing Haruhi to the ground as a ball bounced past her.

"Hikaru! You came this close to snuffing out the light of Haruhi's life!" Tamaki shouted out, completely oblivious to the fact he was standing over a Haruhi who had just been trampled.

"Hey! It's your fault for not catching the ball in the first place, boss." Hikaru started with a shrug.

"Yeah- who knew that he'd be so bad at kemari. So much for him being the 'Genji of Ouran Academy'." Kaoru agreed.

"What?!" Tamaki said. He walked over to the ball with an annoyed expression, "You think so? Well, check this out! Starlight Kick!"

Setsuko watched as Tamaki pulled his leg back and kick the ball with surprising strength. Right before her eyes she watched as the ball vanished and was soaring through the sky a second later. There was a distant sound of glass breaking and Setsuko let out a sigh.

"We'd better go see the damage." Kyoya said.

"Hopefully Suoh's 'Starlight kick' didn't actually make someone see stars." Setsuko muttered.

The group walked in the direction of the ball, and they saw that is had broken through a window on the third floor, when they got to the room the ball broke into, they saw a teen sitting at a dest with an ice pack to his head. All around the room there were stacks upon stacks of wrapped newspapers.

"This school has a newspaper club?" Setsuko asked, looking at one of the papers, it seemed they weren't doing well, and it wasn't a surprise. One of their front-page articles was an alien sighting that was given to them by a student.

"Members, Komatsuzawa Akira- 3rd year- Ukyo Chiage- 2nd year- and Sakyo Tomochika- also a 2nd year." Kyoya said just before snapping his notebook shut.

"Thanks for the introduction." Setsuko said.

"Really. We're terribly sorry." Tamaki said, bowing slightly to the teen sitting at the desk.

"Don't worry- it's no big deal. Could've happened to anyone, right? Just a ball flying through a window and hitting me upside the head." The teen said.

Guilt tripping? You totally don't plan on letting this go. Setsuko thought.

"Please accept our apology!" Tamaki begged.

"Well, this works out perfectly. I was just thinking about approaching the Host Club about a cover story. I don't suppose you'd be interested?"

"I didn't know we had a newspaper club." Haruhi said from where she was sweeping up glass on the ground.

"I did. The amount they've woken me up to try to sell me newspapers is enough to make me want to set fire to their houses." Setsuko grumbled.

"It's more gossip rag than newspaper." Hikaru said.

"Yeah, like a trashy tabloid. It's filled with stories about scandalous love affairs, family power struggles, and junk like that. It's just a lame gossip rag that specializes in stirring up scandal." Kaoru added.

"And everyone knows it's all lies so nobody reads it anymore." They finished together.

The club president, Akira, flinched at their remark, obviously slightly offended. "You know, I guess we have kind of lost sight of the truth because we've been so worried about drawing in more readers. It's a shame we're just now realizing our error, now that the paper is at risk. We've finally realized what we should have been reporting to the students of Ouran." He stood up and bowed, the other two members of the club bowing alongside him. "Help us, please." The three of them said. "For our last paper of this semester we'd like to do an up-close special edition revealing the charms of Ouran's Host Club members. I'm begging you, without your help, our club will close."

This kid really knew what to say in order to get what he wanted. A good reporter. Which made him dangerous for Setsuko. If he dug too deep, asked the right questions, her entire identity as Itsuki could start to crumble. She rubbed her thumb between her pointer and middle finger nervously as she looked towards Tamaki, hoping he would decline.  Of course that was being a bit too hopeful.

Tamaki chuckled and swept a hand through his bangs, "You can count on us. On behalf of the Host Club I accept-"

Before Tamaki could continue, Kyoya stepped in and pushed Tamaki aside. "We have to decline."

"But Kyoya! He got hurt because of me! What's the big deal?" Tamaki whined.

"We also have a policy prohibiting us from sharing personal information with anyone other than our guests. But we'd be more than happy to pay any medical expenses related to your injury." Kyoya continued, a business smile on his face.

"And another thing, what makes you think that we'd want to help you spread more rumors and gossip? We've got a reputation to uphold you know. You'd just ruin it." Hikaru asked.

"Besides, you guys cause a lot of trouble for other people. And who'd wanna get mixed up with that?" Kaoru said.

"And I personally don't want to give up my nap time to talk to some rumor spreading idiots." Setsuko yawned.

Akira flinched at Setsuko's remark, "Idiots...? Well, nonetheless I understand. I guess you really can't erase the sins of the past, can you? People won't even give you the opportunity to try and redeem yourself." He let out a shout of leaned forwards, "My head is killing me!"

"President!" The two other members shouted.

"I'm okay. Don't worry you two." He reassured, then let out another exaggerated pained shout. "Oh no! I'm getting dizzy again!"

Setsuko could barely hide the scowl that was appearing on her face. She knew this kid was clever, but it seemed that he wasn't below guilt tripping and exaggerating his injury. The other members, which Setsuko decided to call Akira's lackies looked panicked as Akira lifted his head only to dramatically flinch in pain and lower it back onto the desk once more.

"I guess all we can do now is disband with grace!" Akira cried out.

"No, you don't have to!" Tamaki suddenly shouted after a few rounds of whatever Akira was doing. "You can always make a fresh start! We'll help. We will rally the power of our Host Club, and we can reestablish the Newspaper Club together!"

"Well count us out." The twins said as the two of them grabbed Haruhi and started dragging her out of the room.

"You're way too trusting, boss. We can't just go along with everything you do forever" Hikaru said.

"Yeah, we've had enough." Kaoru added.

Kyoya placed a hand on Setsuko's shoulder and started to guide he towards the door, Honey and Mori following after the two of them. "We're leaving too Tamaki. We're holding an evaluation meeting. Mostly about you." He said as the four of them walked out.

"You can't just go and ignore your club members opinions, Suoh. Once again I encourage you to open your petty mind." Setsuko said.

"Hold it." Tamaki said with an unusual commanding tone which caused all the members to stop in their tracks. "How can you be so heartless. These men are about to lose their club. Don't you feel sorry for them?! Their family's breaking up! As your president, I demand that you help them! And that is a direct order!"

Kyoya, the twins, and Setsuko looked over their shoulders with dark looks on their face. "We're not going to do it." They all said flatly, causing Tamaki to pale and let out a scream of agony as he broke apart. Though despite his dramatic reaction, the club turned and walked out of the room, leaving Tamaki behind.

"You may be our club president, but it's not your place to command us to do anything." Setsuko said darkly just before the doors closed.

The club, except for Tamaki, returned to the music room and changed out of their costumes and back into their uniforms. Setsuko was laying on a couch drifting off to sleep when Tamaki burst into the room and stormed towards a corner to crouch on the ground and sulk, pushing a ball back and forth with his finger.

"Well, he's obviously upset with us." Kaoru stated.

"I hate it when he ignores us when we're right in front of him. He's such a child." Kyoya sighed.

"I just do it back to him." Setsuko grumbled as she got up from the couch and moved to stand beside Kyoya.

"Nah, Tama-chan's just a lonely guy, you know?" Honey said from where he was sitting at a table.

"A club is like a family. Their 'family's' about to be broken up. I feel sorry for them." Tamaki grumbled.

"I hate to give in, but would it really be that bad to help them out with their newspaper?" Haruhi asked.

"What?" Hikaru asked.

"Hey, since when are you taking his side?" Kaoru asked.

"Since never. Just listen, okay? I know any moment now he's gonna look over here with those puppy-dog eyes he uses when he wants something and none of us will be able to say no so he'll win."

Setsuko sighed, Haruhi was right. She had been on the receiving end of those eyes and despite her current disliking for the guy his puppy-dog eyes were powerful.

"Let me guess, you're speaking from experience, aren't you?" The twins asked.

"Besides, maybe I'm wrong but isn't this the kinda thing you guys usually go for?"

"Haruhi, you need to think a bit more about it." Setsuko said. "Sure, the host club goes for things that to increase popularity but us appearing in a newspaper known to slander teachers and expose love affairs between students isn't the popularity we need." She narrowed her eyes slightly, "Reporters can be like rats, digging and digging until they find something they can use against us. From something as small as a freckle on your thigh to your real gender." She shook her head and shrugged tiredly, "Dealing with them is a lot more trouble than it's worth, not to mention dangerous."

Haruhi was quiet for a second before she turned and looked at Honey, who was happily eating a slice of cake. "What about you Honey-senpai?"

"Count me out. I have this cake to eat, and Takashi sticks with me, right."

Mori nodded and gave an affirming grunt.

"Itsuki has a point. If those three dig around here they could find things that would put many secrets this clubs holds in danger. It's too much of a risk for us to be involved with them." Kyoya said.

"Yeah, so let's just ignore Tamaki- and he's doing it." Setsuko said as she looked over at Tamaki and being met with wide watery eyes.

He looked from the ball to the group and each time one person stepped away, being successfully swayed by the puppy dog eyes. He repeated the steps until Setsuko and Kyoya were the last two standing.

With a sigh, Setsuko adjusted his glasses, "There will be some conditions." He said, causing Tamaki to... bark? In excitement.

"Don't tell me you let him break you?" Setsuko said. "What about the, you know, debt and gender thing?"

Kyoya just sighed and continued speaking to Tamaki, "The outline for their article will be submitted by us. Interviews are strictly prohibited. And it is vital that our client's identities be kept confidential. Do we agree?"

Tamaki once again barked in what Setsuko could only assume was agreement.

"Well, if you think it's cool, Kyoya-senpai," Hikaru started.

"Then we do too." Kaoru added.

"Wow how easily swayed you two are." Setsuko said, "Though I guess the restriction of interviews does help with the gender issue." She sighed and placed a hand on the back of her neck, "Fine, as long as they don't disturb by naps." Doesn't make me any less nervous. Setsuko added to herself.

"I'll do it since Kyo-chan says it's okay." Honey said, with Mori agreeing from beside him.

"Then I'll schedule a meeting to talk with the newspaper club and everything will be settled." Kyoya said.

"Great." Setsuko groaned.

***

The next day Setsuko was out in the courtyard as Tamaki and the other hosts played 'Daruma Doll fell over.' Setsuko was standing in the back alongside Kyoya.

"Tell me again why we're actually playing this." Setsuko grumbled. This was cutting into her nap time, and she had a particularly hard training session this morning. Her muscles were sore and all she wanted to do was lay on a comfy couch and sleep for the next few hours.

Kyoya placed a hand on the square of her back and pushed her forwards, until the two of them had caught up with the group before he pulled his hand away. "We have to show our observers that we're a close-knit club. Don't want them saying anything about discord with the members."

"Aren't you submitting an outline?"

"An outline is only an outline. I'm sure you've noticed those men are clever."

"And they know loopholes." Setsuko sighed. This wasn't the first time they've talked about the news trio that day. During lunch they had a meeting without Tamaki and Haruhi to go over the day. It was obvious to most of them that Akira had some kind of ulterior motive with the host club, and it was their job today to find out what it is without Tamaki or Haruhi being made aware of what was happening. Shouldn't be too hard- Tamaki was a dumbass and Haruhi was oblivious. If Setsuko were being honest, she's never liked reporters- they were intrusive and asked questions they did not have the right to know anything about much less publish for the world to know.

"You're Fujioka, right?" A voice asked and Setsuko was snapped out of her thoughts. Apparently as Tamaki was ranting about commoner games and friends and childhoods Akira and his lackies moved to stand beside Haruhi. "You wouldn't mind if I asked you a few questions, would you?"

"Um, sure."

"So why did you join the Host Club?" Akira asked.

"Well, uh. Honestly, I joined 'cause I was forced to."

"You're an honor student on a scholarship, correct?"

"Uh-huh, that's right."

"So, in other words, the fact that you're a member of this club is just another example of how the Suoh family loves to flaunt their power."

Setsuko perked up, there it was.

"Now if you would, please tell me all about Tamaki's dark side... If you can help me out here, I just might be able to set you free."

"Stop right there." Setsuko said, placing herself between Akira and Haruhi. "If I recall correctly one of the conditions you agreed to was no interviews."

"Oh no, you misunderstand. I was simply asking Fujioka a few questions. He agreed." Akira said, putting on an innocent smile.

Setsuko put an innocent smile to match his as she placed a hand on Haruhi's shoulder "If I'm correct, an interview is- most of the time- a face to face meeting where someone asks another question. Is that not what you were just doing then?" When Akira didn't respond Setsuko's grin turned a little sinister. "That's what I thought, now, come on Haruhi, Suoh wants to play kankeri."

After Tamaki kicked the can and hit Akira in the head once again, the host club aside from Kyoya were off to find hiding places.

From where she was sitting in a tree, Setsuko watched as Akira and his lackies stalked away, angrily grumbling about 'finding the truth their own way' which was never a good sign. She looked down at Kyoya and the moment their gazes met Kyoya nodded, and Setsuko jumped down from where she was sitting on the tree branch. Around her, the other hosts moved out from their hiding spots, where they secretly followed the newspaper club inside, getting there before the club thanks to some shortcuts courtesy of Nekozawa.

It was time to confront them.

"I knew it, you're all just Tamaki's lackies! He's holding his family's power over you all!" Akira's voice came from the entrance, where Honey and Mori were standing.

"That's not true." Honey said. "We don't hang out with Tama-chan because of his parents. We love him. We all like being around him and that's why we choose to be here."

"He may be a hopeless idiot and he might have some... less than desirable beliefs, but he seems to care about what's important to him. That's more than what you can say." Setsuko said from where she was siting cross legged on top of a stack of newspapers and looking around at all the Host club members and seeing smiles on their faces. She turned her attention to Akira and smiled, a shadow falling over her eyes as she gave them a sinister smile, "Letting a few rats trample around like they own the place is a disservice to both him and the club."

"Well," Kaoru started.

"What will you do?" Hikaru finished.

"Please leave Tama-chan alone, okay?" Honey asked.

Akira's expression was as sour as it could be, "I'll get you all! It's not just about him anymore. I'll write an article that'll ruin all of you!"

"Go ahead, be my guest." Kyoya said, moving to grab the first aid kit that was on Akira's desk, "Although," He paused and tapped the bottom of the kit and a small memory disk popped out, "What do you think we should do about this little disk? You see it's been here since yesterday, and it recorded everything."

"President!" Lacky one exclaimed.

"Just give up already!" Lacky two pleaded.

Akira took two steps forwards before he fell to his knees in despair.

"Let me explain it to you in terms you can understand." Kyoya said, walking up to the fallen news club president. "You would do well to remember that the Ootori group and the Hitachiin family alone own enough stock to remove your father from his position as president of the Komatsuzawa Publishing Firm. However, we would never do something like that, we are not like you. What we strive for is fundamentally different."

Akira started shaking, before he shouted in defeat and slammed his fist against the ground. "Fine! I give up! From now on we'll write articles worthy of the school's respect! You'll see then!"

The club all glanced at each other and smiled. The twins jumped off the desk, Setsuko slid off the stack of newspapers she was sitting on, and Kyoya walked out with the first aid kit and disk in hand. They all walked past Akira and his lackies to where Mori and Honey were standing.

"Then, we'll be seeing you." Kyoya said, and with that the club went back out to the courtyard to find Tamaki and Haruhi, who were still hiding somewhere out there.

Akira? more like.... Assira haha am I right??

Kyoya: What's the worst thing you guys have done?

Tamaki: Rickrolled my teacher in 4th grade.

Hikaru: I kicked Kyoya in the shin-

Setsuko: I burned a town down.

Hiakru: What?!

Kyoya: What the hell is wrong with you?!?

Setsuko: A lot of things.

Haruhi: No shit.

Tamaki: What's going on?

Kyoya: Setsuko wouldn't drink water.

Tamaki: ...And?

Kyoya: And I asked her how fast she could chug an entire bottle.

Setsuko, loudly: 16 OUNCES IN TEN SECONDS, BITCHES!
