05. what they want

chapter five,
what they want

HOLLAND STILL COULDN'T believe everyone was buying the whole Sarah Fier is possessing people and turning them psycho bullshit as they walked through the woods where the crash had happened. She was all for imagination but that was just pushing it too far.

The real logical explanation was that Shadyside could really push people to their breaking point, so maybe they all just snapped, like Deena said.

"What's up?" Simon asked quietly from beside her, slipping his hand into hers.

She stayed quiet for a moment before responding. "C'mon, Simon, you can't really believe that this is because of a witch."

"Holly, dead people are after us," he answered lightly. "There can't really be any other explanation other than the witch."

"Okay, fine, you got me there," she sighed, shaking her head. "Still don't think it's real, though."

Simon chuckled, pressing a kiss to her temple. His recent behavior was confusing her. He hadn't really acted like this. . . well ever.

They arrived at where the car had crashed and Sam walked up to it. She began to reenact what had happened the other night. "So I fell out of the car. . ." She got on her hands and knees and crawled forward. "Here. I was crawling and my nose was bleeding. And then. . . I feel something." She pulled at whatever she felt, revealing chains.

"Chains?" Kate questioned, kneeling down.

Sam kept pulling and Simon realized what was happening. "Oh! Not just chains."

"I'm gonna be sick," Holland placed a hand on her stomach at the sight of the skull.

Josh pulled up the rest of Sarah's Fiers skeleton. He pulled something out - the lock to the chains. "Fier. It's her. It's her grave."

"Oh, no, no, no," Simon backed away from her body. "This is bad! This is really bad!"

"Fuck, you can't disturb someone's grave," Holland also backed away. "Despite if they're a witch or not."

"No wonder the witch is pissed at us, I'd be pissed too," Kate sent Sam a dirty look. "Sam disturbed her grave."

Josh sighed. "Now she's sending her henchman after us."

"Henchman?" Kate repeated. "As in every one of those sickos on your wall is going to be coming after us?"

A twig snapped, making Holland flinched. "You guys. . ." she started. "Why don't we, um, run."

"Hold up, hold up," Simon raised a hand. "She's mad because we disturbed her grave, right?"

"Yeah," Deena confirmed. "So?"

"So, let's un-disturb it," Simon suggested. "Just put the bones back, rebury them, and put her to rest!"

"Do you honestly think that would work?" Holland scoffed, crossing her arms.

"Yeah," Simon nodded. "In Poltergeist-"

Another twig snapping cut him off. Everyone's head snapped towards the sound. Kate swallowed thickly and turned back to the others. "Whatever. Let's just do it quickly so we can go."

Holland took her flashlight and walked the opposite of Josh, shining the light into the trees. She was scared, she wasn't afraid to admit that. But if she was going to die, she wasn't going out without a fight.

Holland found herself feeling extremely grateful for the year of self-defense classes her mother had put her in. Eloise had wanted her daughter to know how to defend herself so she wouldn't end up completely childless.

Holland didn't know that much, but she knew enough that a few football players never tried to do anything to her again.

"Deena, Deena! Find something to, like, wrap her bones," Simon instructed as he and Kate dug.

"Guys?" Josh called out.

"Yeah, buddy?" Holland returned, shining her light over to him.

"I think there's someone in the woods!" his voice quivered in fear. "We need to hurry!"

"There, there," Simon let out as soon as her body was covered. "We're sorry."

"Did it work?" Kate wondered. "Did it work?"

"No!" Holland screamed as a man with an axe came running towards Josh. Josh scurried out of the way. The murderer didn't even bat an eye at him - or maybe he did, Holland couldn't tell because of the sack on his head.

Kate, Simon, and Holland hurried to the ambulance with Deena, Sam, and Josh right behind them. Kate quickly started the ambulance as soon as everyone was in the back and slammed down on the gas pedal.

"That was the Camp Nightwing Killer!" Josh announced.

"I don't know about you guys," Holland placed a hand on her heart. "But I don't want to get murdered - especially by the same murderer who killed my sister!"

"That was a bust!" Kate exclaimed from the driver's seat.

"Yeah, maybe because it's not like the movies, okay?" Deena stood up to grab a towel for Sam's bloody nose. "It's not as easy as putting bones to rest."

"It should've worked," Simon countered. "It always works!"

"Maybe it's her missing hand," Josh guessed.

"Who gives a shit?" Kate replied. "It doesn't matter. Hey, how do I not die?"

"We," Simon corrected. "How do we not die." He pointed to Josh. "And I'm looking at you, Witch Nerd."

"I - I don't know!" Josh stammered.

"They're not coming for us!" Sam blurted. "They're coming for me."

"What?" Deena's brows furrowed.

"I saw her again," Sam admitted. "The witch. She - I disturbed her grave. She wants me."

"Yeah," Josh realized. "Yeah, yeah. Nightwing ran right by me. I jumped out of his way, it was like he didn't even see me. He went for her."

"Okay," Holland nodded. "So, we give Sam to the murderers. Problem solved."

"What?" Deena hissed. "Holland, what the fuck? You're talking about getting someone killed!"

"Deena, they're after her," Holland's hand flew out towards Sam. "Not us, okay? If we give them Sam, it'll all be over and we can go back to slightly normal lives."

"No! Ruby attacked Simon," Deena pointed out. "Skull Mask came after us at home. And while you guys were babysitting."

Kate stopped the ambulance and stepped into the back. "No, he didn't. Skull Mask didn't care about us. He wanted this." She unzipped Simon's jacket, revealing the bloodstained shirt underneath. "Sam's blood."

"What the fu. . ." Deena trailed off, nose wrinkling in disgust.

"Yeah," Simon sucked in shaky breaths. "From the crash when Sam puked period." Holland found herself giving a small and light chuckle, something she needed that night. "It's Jaws, dude! A shark smelling blood. Kate's right, when we found Skeletor, he was all sniffy and weird with my shirt like a perv in a pantie shop!"

"Yeah, but he came to our house too," Deena looked at her brother.

"Deena," Kate's eyes flickered to her shoes.

"Sam bled on her bones and now the witch wants more of her blood!" Simon yelped.

"Okay, so what do they do in Jaws?" Sam wondered.

"Well, I'm pretty sure they didn't go skinny-dipping with the goddamn bait," Kate responded.

"She's not bait!" Deena defended.

"Yeah," Josh started. "She is. Seriously, if we're right and they're after her. . . let's give these assholes what they want."
