Chapter V

Back To School?

[Warning for throwing up]

Location; Watcher Academy

POV; Grian/Xelqua

'Fifty-two, fifty-three, fifty-four...' I counted in my head.

I was counting the stones that made up the floor I was walking on.

Me and the other new Watcher students were being escorted to the lunch room at exactly 12:00 pm.

It was the same evey day. We were kept on a tight schedule, if you mess up, you get punished.

Several of the others had been punished in the past. Being punished normally meant you got extra work and no food for three days.

The Watchers also told us about those who go against the Watchers even after becoming one.

Watchers who rebel are given a mark to separate them from the others. The mark is shaped like an eye.

The Watcher that was leading us turned around and faced us.

"You have 20 minutes to eat lunch before you go to your next session." The Watcher said.

We all walked into the lunch room and sat at our assigned tables.

A Watcher teleported our food infront of us.

I stare down at my food in disgust. We have had this same meal every day since we've been here.

I take a small bite of the chorus fruit salad.

"Whats wrong Xelqua? Don't you like your food?" One of the Watchers asked, after they came up next to me.

"We have had this same meal every day, I'm just getting tired of it." I say.

I now I shouldn't have said anything. I'm going to get in trouble now, for sure.

"I understand Xelqua, here, have some of this." The Watcher says while handing me a cooked pork chop.

I look up at him quizzically. 'This is a joke right, they wouldn't let me just get away with what I said.'

I take a bite of the cooked pork and swallowed it.

"It tastes better doesn't it." The Watcher remarks.

My stomach starts to hurt really bad and I feel nauseous.

"To bad Watchers can't eat anything but chorus fruit unless it's golden." The Watcher said smiling at me.

'Oh great, I'm gonna be sick now aren't I.'

"Anything you eat that's not chorus fruit, isn't going to stay down." They say to me.

I frown deeply at them for this horrible joke. I then lean over my plate and throw up.

I wipe my mouth with my sleeve and scowl up at the Watcher. The Watcher was trying very hard not to burst out into laughter.

I should have trusted my gut on this one instead of eating what the Watcher gave me.

"Well now you know everyone, you can only eat chorus fruit." The Watcher exclaims to everyone in the room.

I look down at the pork in my hands and threw it away.

After cleaning myself up and returning back to the lunch room, we all gathered to be escorted to our last session of the day.

Our escorts take us to a door labeled Magic Attack and Defense.

We enter the room and take our seats.

"Today we are going to go over blocking someone's attack with a sheild." Our teacher says to begin the class.

"Instead of simply showing you how it's done though, we are all going outside to do this together." He says to us.

Morden, who is our teacher, leads us out of the room suddenly down the hallways.

He takes us to a courtyard that's in the middle of the Watcher facility.

"Pair up then we can start." Morden says.

We all pair up, then line up like Morden was order us to do.

I was paired, unfortunately, with one of the best magic users of this facility zof Watcher trainees.

His name was Zadicus, he was one of the Watcher trainees that arrived here a year ago.

"Now, when you here the bang one of you put a shield up and the other blast it. After about 20 minutes, switch." Morden says.

We hear the bang not long after he says that.

Zadicus raises his hands and puts up a sheild.

I raise both of my hands and fire a continuous blast at Zadicus' sheild.

About 15 minutes in, some of the others  cry out it pain and fall to their knees holding their arms close.

The ones that fell had glowing streaks running along their forearms and on their hands.

"Everyone keep training, don't worry about the others." Morden says to us who were still either holding up a sheild or blasting at one.

I focus back on blasting the sheild that Zadicus was holding up.

In the background, I hear some of the other Watchers talking to the ones who fell.

They were talking about magic burns or something.

We continue to go on for the remainder of the time till Morden walks up and calls for us to stop and switch.

I switch my magic to making a sheild and holding it up.

Zadicus wastes no time though, and as soon as I have my sheild up, he starts blasting at it.

I'm already tired from blasting at his sheild and feel myself weakening.

I start to strain against the use of magic and a sharp pain begins on my arms.

'This is what caused the others to fall.' I realize.

Zadicus notices my strain and pushes further with his magic.

I'm not ready to give up though, and grit my teeth as I add more to my sheild.

Zadicus falters for a second when he realized I wasn't going down so easily.

Zadicus then blasts a smaller blast that flies over behind me and explodes.

The blast distracts me and I drop my sheild for a second before I realize my mistake and quickly put ot back up.

Zadicus is faster though, he sent a blast that got to me before I could put my sheild back up.

The impact of the blast, which hit me on the chest, set me flying back a few blocks.

I land on the ground and lift my hand to my head and sit up.

Zadicus is laughing to himself about what he did.

I quickly stand up and walk over to him too confront him.

"Hey! That was cheating, you were only supposed to blast my shield." I tell him.

"Oh really, cause I only remember being told to blast your sheild, nothing about not adding an extra blast." Zadicus laughs back.

"What's going on over here?" Morden says, coming up to us.

"Zadicus cheated, he distracted me with another blast that wasn't directed at my sheild." I tell Morden.

"Well, if your sheild dropped and he was able to blast you, I think that's fair game." Morden says to me, before starting to walk away.

"No it's not! If I did that you would agree that it was cheating and send me to my room to get punished." I argue back at him.

Morden turns around sharply to face me with a scowl on his face.

"That's it, off to your room Xelqua. Stay there and await further punishment." Morden says to me.

I scowl back him and stomped off to my room.

Before I leave the courtyard, I look at Zadicus, he was smiling back at me looking smug.

I stick my tongue out at him before running to my room.

When I reach my room I sigh and lay down on my bed.

I hiss when my arms touched the bed.

I sit back up and look at my arms, they were covered in faintly glowing streaks of a pale blue color.

'If only I was able to use my Admin powers, the I would be able to hold up my sheild longer.'

I reach my hand up to feel the gem pendant that was attached to a cord around my neck.

The dumb thing prevented my Admin powers.

I tried to break the cord off with my Watcher magic.

A strong pain shot through my body as soon as my Watcher magic hit the cord.

I gasp and stop my Watcher magic.

A tear falls down the side of my face.

'I have to get out of here. Every day I'm here, I hate it less. Something here is poisoning my mind.'

I pull my knees up to my chest and put my head in my hands.

A few more tears slip down my cheeks as I sit there, in this lonely room.

Stuck with the Watchers.

~A few hours later~

Someone opening my door brings me out of my stareing contest with the ceiling while laying on my bed.

I sit up to face the newcomer, Morden.

"Xelqua, as you know I sent you here because you disrespected me and argued at what I said." He walks over and pulls my chair from my desk to sit down in front of me.

"You caused commotion and disruption in today's training session." Morden adds.

"You have to be punished to learn not to do that again. You are to get extra schoolwork and no food for 3 days." Morden says sternly.

I look down, I had expected this but that doesn't mean I'm not upset.

Morden looks at my arms and sees my magic burns.

"Those aren't going to heal properly if you don't get them treated. Maybe they'll help you even more to learn your lesson." Morden says.

He gets up and walks out of the room, leaving me alone in silence.
