Whispers of the Heart

{word count: 521}

  Serene sat beside Sigurd, he wrapped a protective arm around her shoulder as all the Danes gather in the dining hall. She wasn't paying any attention, her thoughts were on Finan and their last conversation. It hurt her just as much as it did him, the hurt on his face made her heart churn but she had to do it. She knew if she didn't he'd want her to stay, she'd want to stay.

Sigurd was her brother, he took her under his wing, protected her, taught her, loved her and she couldn't just leave him for a man she just met. Although Finan made her feel something she'd never thought she'd feel, safe. His touch calmed her instead of sending her into a panic like the others. She was torn, she wasn't to sure on what to do.

The aroma of roasting meats and ale filled the air, mingling with the scent of sweat and worn leather. She raised her eyes to meet Finan's as the men talked of who should lead. His eyes held concern but his face was cold, his once warm smile now a deep frown. So she quickly looked back at the ground, before standing and leaving the room.

She gripped the cape around her as the chill air bit at her skin, the snow crunched beneath her boots as she made her way to Skade's cell. She knew she would regret this but she had to know.

As she opened the door, the guard quickly stood up as if he'd been caught but when he noticed it was just her he moved outside the door with a nod. " what is it." Skade spat bitterly

Serene swallowed the spit that had built up in her throat. " I need to know my fate, I need to know who to choice." She whispered the last part but Skade heard, she smirked.

There was something about her smirk that rubbed Serene the wrong way, it was as if she knew something Serene didn't. Skade rose from hay she was sat on, as she walked towards the dark haired girl her eyes roamed her body with a smirk.

" you wish me to tell you your destiny, when you let them lock me in here?" Serene sighed, she knew this was a terrible idea.

" right, forgive me I'll leave." As she went to leave Skade snatched her arm. They stood there staring at each other before Skade sighed. " your fate is unclear, they've made my sight blurred." Serene nodded.

" thank you Skade." It wasn't like Skade to admit she was powerless so Serene was thankful. As much as Serene would hate to admit it she loved Skade as a sister, though Skade had done horrid things she had always been there for her and protected her.

Skade placed a hand on her face " you will see for yourself, you do not need my sight." Serene smiled sadly and nodded, she knew what she had to do. Walking out of the cell, her eyes met Finan's. His eyes searched hers desperately and she knew she had to tell him.
