chapter five
I couldn't remember when was the last time I genuinely smiled.
I stared out of the window, sighing as I looked at every corner of the town. Busy roads, people rushing to work, couples walking hand in hand while lovingly gazing at each other, kids running around in the park with wide smiles — I thought to myself, what am I living for?
Maybe if I could be a little more optimistic about myself, I could live just like anyone else, but it seemed like no one and nothing could pull me up from my broken state. On top of that, I began to hate everything. How unfair the world is to me, how luck always isn't on my side, how I'm always alone and how I'm always the failure while everyone else is far ahead towards success.
I closed my eyes and let out another sigh, and a tear fell without me realising.
"Eunhee?"
"Yeah?" I hummed softly, turning to look at Taehyung who was blinking owlishly at me.
"Are you alright?" He cleared his throat nervously while scratching the back of his head.
"I am," I lied foolishly. Grief was too evident on my face.
"Is my house that dirty that it's making you cry?" He questioned sheepishly.
I let out a faint smile, realising how watery my eyes were before I wiped my tears with the back of my hand. "No, it's nothing like that. Everything's fine," I said, "But do remember to keep the bathroom clean, gosh."
He chuckled, somehow nervously, "Have you eaten?"
I looked over to the plate of sandwiches on the dining table behind him. "You actually made food," I walked slowly towards the table after him.
"Nothing much," he sat down before me, holding up his sandwich then taking a bite.
I smiled, pleased at how considerate he was. "Thanks," I simply said, then I ate the sandwich served on my plate, which surprisingly tasted good.
However, we somehow fell into dead silence. The whole time I made sure I didn't make any sound while chewing and I dare not look anywhere else but down on my plate.
The silence between us was so loud I could almost hear my heartbeat.
Until minutes later, I finally mustered enough courage to look up at him, realising that he had been staring at me the whole time. He shifted his gaze away from me almost instantly when our eyes met.
"Why were you looking at me like that?" I asked.
"N-Nothing," he said, flustered. "I just wonder what's bothering you so much."
I slightly smiled, touched at how concerned he was. "I'm alright, I promise," I said, "I need to leave to somewhere in an hour, though."
"Where to?"
"To visit my sister."
"You have a sister?" His eyes widened, "Where does she live?"
"The hospital," I replied, and he was about to respond in return but he paused for awhile, confused, puzzled and perplexed all at the same time.
"Ah, I'm sorry," he looked into my eyes with so much sympathy. His gaze was so warm, it touched me in such a way that could almost heal my wounded heart. "If you don't mind sharing what happened, I'd listen."
"Well," I sighed, my mind going back to the unfortunate occurrence from two years ago.
My younger sister, Jung Eunha, was one who I truly treasure because she was the only biological family member I had. On one night she'd promise to return home after a late-night study session with her friends in school.
She never came back.
Taehyung looked at me, puzzled. "A hit-and-run accident," I explained.
Eunha got into a coma and hadn't woken up eversince. My life then shattered into pieces, the feeling of loneliness came too frequent that I eventually got accustomed to it.
"So, have you found the one who knocked her over?" He asked.
I shook my head in response, "But I'll kill that bastard when I do," I clenched hard on my jaw, anger starting to rage within me.
It had been two years and the investigators never got to find the culprit. Unless Eunha wakes up, we'd never get to know who knocked her over. And that was only if, she hasn't lose her memory.
"Well, I can send you to the hospital today," Taehyung offered generously.
"Are you serious? You don't have to."
"It's okay, I've got nothing on anyway," his lips stretched into a smile and that itself melted my heart.
He isn't that bad of a person afterall.

Taehyung turned off the vehicle's engine before he twisted his head to look at me. "I'll wait in the truck?"
"You can come up with me if you wish to," I offered, "I don't mind."
"I, uh," he hesitated, staring at the steering wheel. "Will it be okay? I'm not related to her or anything."
"She isn't even awake to feel uncomfortable about a stranger visiting," I answered, "So come on."
We both stepped out of the truck, then walked towards the entrance of the hospital. The environment of the hospital was all familiar because I came to visit too many times. After getting to the reception, we took the elevator up to the eighteenth floor, where my sister's ward was.
My heart thumped as I walked along the corridor of the wardrooms, hoping for a doctor to stop me in my tracks just to tell me that Eunha has miraculously woken up from her coma.
Taehyung walked after me and I turned around just to see him as nervous as I was.
I took a few more steps before I finally stood before a door labeled 'Jung Eunha'.
"Let's get in," I said to Taehyung, turning the door knob and walked into the room, my eyes immediately averting to look at Eunha who was peacefully laying on the bed. She was still in the exact form as when I last saw her a week ago – pale skinned and skinny.
"Eunha," I called, as if she could hear me. I stood by her bed, kissing her forehead and gently held her hand. I watched as the heart monitor beeps at a constant and steady pace.
"She's really beautiful," Taehyung said, standing by my side.
"She sure is, my parents adored her more than me in the past," I smiled, reminicsing the memories we had together as a family.
The door suddenly opened and both Taehyung and I looked over to see the doctor coming into the room.
"Good afternoon Eunhee. I see you're here with a friend," he greeted us with his smile, showing his pearly whites.
"Kim Taehyung," he offered his hand and the doctor introduced himself as Dr Lee, before shaking his hand in return.
I watched nervously as the doctor flipped through the papers, checking updates on Eunha. "Actually Eunhee, I've got some news to tell you."
I gulped. "It better be good."
He pursed his lips whilst looking at me and I caught on in an instant.
"Well first, Eunha's condition is pretty fine, her heartbeat's steady and everything," he said, "But it's most likely that she'll be having a memory loss. I'm afraid she won't be able to remember anything."
My heart instantly dropped to my stomach.
"What?"
"Her brain is severely damaged, we don't think she'll remember anything after she undergo an operation."
And with that, tears started to fill to the brim of my eyes. Eunha won't be able to remember me.
The doctor apologised, then took a few records on his checklist before he left the room.
I tilt my head down in attempt to hide my tears, but Taehyung had noticed it way too soon.
"Well atleast, she'll be awake, you can start things all over and help her remember everything," he tried his best in finding words to comfort me.
"It's not that easy," I muttered.
He only sighed. Suddenly, his hand reached out for my waist, slowly pulling me closer towards him before he embraced me into a hug.
"It'll all be alright," he said.
And I wish it will.
