Melodious splatter of drops of rain hitting the roof as it poured down on earth was what woke me up from the short nap I had implored myself into. Quickly, I got up from the bed, jogging straight on to the window pavements to go close the open windows which was already making way to specks of rain escaping into the room.
I had arrived from the Abuja yesterday, the same place I had served as a national youth corper for a year. My twenty one years had not been of waste and I was glad I had made Aunty and Uncle proud. I was proud of myself.
I placed myself back on the bed, crossing my legs Indian style and laying on the bed, staring at the ceilings. The three metallic brothers rolled after themselves, blowing air right unto my face and also resulting to the slight blow of movement of my hair.
Uncle had been suggesting I started working in the company, THE ATRIX, The same company William had taken over a year ago. Uncle had retired few months after my graduation, claiming it was time he settled down and allow children of this generation do their work.
I hadn't seen William in a long time, since the day we had all attended a get together. The same day uncle had stepped down.
I stood up from the bed again, standing in front of the vanity mirror. I picked my face cream, rubbing it on my slightly fair toned skin. Sighing, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. He was there. Two rooms away from me and I could feel it deep in my soul like he was exactly right next to me.
I had been avoiding him. I thought we had formed a temporary truce when he had visited me in Ekiti but I guess it had been called off because when I had arrived home after graduation, he had gone back to being cold. Even when I had choked on the get together day, he hadn't even offered me water to drink. He had just stood there like nothing abnormal had happened.
It was not like I was keeping a grudge against him or anything, no I was past that but if he was on fire and I had water, I'd drink it.
I almost attacked the mirror with my weight when the door to my room suddenly jerked open. There he was, standing across from me with his hands buried deep in his black joggers pocket. His up part was covered by a simple shirt as he stood still in his position, his gaze raking my full frame.
His eyes searched my body, right from the tip of my toes up to my face. My heart constricted against my chest, breathing fast as he walked closer. He stopped five steps away from me and I dug my body into the dressing table right in front of the mirror.
"You are to resume to work tomorrow." His deep voice cold as usual announced and I just nodded my head in return. I didn't trust my voice not to betray me at the moment.
He waved his hands in front of me, "words please," he said and that was when I realized the beauty of the floor. No seriously, it was a fine tile that blended richly with the style of the room, it......
"I believe I'm talking to someone?" William more of questioned than stated, interrupting my new found interest on the floor.
Clearing my throat, I spluttered, "yes, uncle announced to me earlier." My gaze was still not focused on his face.
Suddenly, he stepped forward resulting to my frantic backward movement. Not like I could move any further because my body was already in a meet and greet with the dressing table which by the way was digging it's bone into my skin.
He took another step, I dug myself in harder. His steps came to an halt just as he got up my front. The sole of his slippers clashed softly with my bare toes.
"It's rude you know, not looking at the person talking to you. That's rude." William dragged his words slowly, reserving like he was talking to a child.
What happened to you, cat caught your tongue?
Just that way, the blurry haze I had transpired into when Williams had entered into the room cleared and I remembered how much I hated him at the moment.
"And I believe it's my choice if I wish to look at you when speaking or not." I glared up at him, crossing my hands over my chest.
Williams eyes followed the movement of my hands, his eyes landed on my chest, scanning it for a brief moment before raising back up to my form only to have it advance back right to my chest. I cleared my throat, removing my hands and standing akimbo.
William cleared his throat, taking his gaze away from me for a bit looking a little flustered, "well, it looks like she talks. Whatever it is you want to do, do it. I'm going to bed. You had better not be late. Trust me, I'm willing to show you how much of a CEO I am." His tone was cold and dismissive.
Again, again with that dismissive tone. That same tone that made me feel unimportant.
"Well, Mr William, if you are done yapping about how much of a "CEO" you are, get out of my room." I made a mock quote of CEO with my hands as I spoke.
His eyes turned furious, like he couldn't believe I was kicking him out of my room. He pushed himself forward like he wanted to grab me, maybe throw me across the room while growling, "I'm the big bad wolf. No one kicks me out. Roarrrr."
Now you are just being dramatic.
He stopped mid way, glancing down at my frame, his height dwarfing my 5'8 frame. Tall bastard. Taking a deep breathe he said, "you know what, do whatever. Just resume to work late tomorrow and dare me." He took a calming breathe while I used my right hand to gesture for him to get out.
He turned swiftly, his feet's slapping against the tile and I removed myself from the dressing table. I took in a deep breathe only to choke back on air when I was suddenly grabbed by the waist from behind. Hands turned me around, crashing me into a hard chest and before I could make a sound of protest, William ducked his head down, crashing his lips directly on my neck. His nose rubbed me on the neck, sniffing me like he couldn't have enough of me or was it my smell?
One of Williams hands left my waistline, crossing across my shoulders to take hold of my hair and hurl me closer to him. Sparks. They buzzed through me, splitting and twinning right up to my core junction. Heat filled me as William continued to massage my scalp, fingers grazing my hair as goose bumps punctured my whole body. I exploded into a haze of mini pleasure, almost loosing my balance like a drunkard.
"Goddess, give me endless patience." He mumbled as he kissed me right on my neck, sliding upward to my temple and lingering there.
"What do you think you are doing?" I questioned, trying and failing to untangle myself away from him. His hands still remained on my waist, dangerously close to my butt as I tried my best to ignore the unconscious act of the way he kept on rubbing it.
"Let me go." I muttered trying to sound cool even though I was anything but. Surprised, I almost landed on the floor when he let me go so easily. I sure hadn't been expecting that. One of his hands still held onto my arms as he stared on at me.
Not able to take it, my gaze searched around, looking for something to focus on.
"You know, you really should learn how to look at me times when it's necessary. 8 months sure was long." And with that, he left the room, closing the door gently behind him and leaving me behind to reel what the fuck had just happened.
**
I was late. It was like the heavens were against. I had woken up past 8, had a quick bath and cladded myself in a black gown that fitted snugly on my tall but slender figure. I hadn't even had the time to grab breakfast as Aunty and Uncle had laughed at me when I had rushed past them like an heir being chased. They thought it was funny? They had no idea what evil male alpha William would do to me most especially after he had warned me.
My legs jiggled with nerve and a little bit of excitement as I stood in the far end of the elevator leading to the last floor. I had been requested by the receptionist at the front desk to report to the CEO's office after she had handed me my office identification card. Excitement brewed in me as I tried and failed to hide the smile growing on my face. It was my first day at work.
I was proud to say at 21, I had my own place of work. I resisted the urge to to squeal and roll myself on the floor like a worm.
"Well, someone does look happy." A male I hadn't noticed had been standing alongside me in the elevator grunted and I stopped short, trying to conceal my smile. Nothing could take away my smile at the moment.
"It's my first day at work." I informed him as he turned around to look at me. He was of fair skin, a little bit taller than me, probably 5'9. He was in black fitted suit with shinning black shoes.
"Haha, no wonder. It's always like that till you get swarmed by a lot of workload." He tsked like he was relishing a memory.
"I can't help but be happy though." I smiled at him just as the elevator stopped. He turned to me again, "I guess you are headed to the last floor. Must be somewhat important. I get off here. The names Lucas by the way, you?" He asked.
"Jadesola. But you can call me Jade." The smile still remained on my face as the elevator closed, blocking him away from my vision.
The whole hall was quiet as I walked into it, two desks were located at the center, a woman sat on the chair faces one of the desks. She was in a smart white shirt, a pen behind her ears as she typed on the laptop, the sound of the pa pa pa of the keyboard reverberating through the silent hall.
"Hello." I smiled at her and she looked up, a fleet look of recognition flashing through her eyes. Immediately, she stood up like she was on fire, almost hitting the cup of coffee located on her table.
"Good afternoon ma'am, you should go right ahead straight, turn left and that would lead you to Mr William's office. He has been waiting for you. My name is Pauline and I am Mr William's personal assistant. Right in front of me is the desk of your personal assistant. He would be here shortly as he is on a short errand on the CEO's command." She said that all in one breathe. A practiced professional voice laced with a hint of curiosity leaking behind her tone.
Wait o, is it me she called ma'am?
"Erm, alright. I'll just go ahead. See you later." I cleared my throat as I walked past her, my white stilettos clinking loudly on the marbled floor.
I pushed the plush door leading to William's office open and presented myself in. The first thing my gaze landed on was the brown walnut bookshelf located at the far end of the right hand side. A brown four seater sofa with a center table was located in the center of the room. The marbled ground was covered with black fur rug clashing its color with the white painted office room.
William was seated on the office chair. His hands were placed directly across the table and over the laptop typing furiously on it. By his right hand side was what, a fireplace? Wow! He had a fire dominating the whole right end by his chair.
"Welcome to the kingdom princess Jayde." His voice snapped me out of my observations.
"Good morning William." I greeted him back.
"It's Mr William." He corrected.
"And it's Miss Jade." I fired back.
His eyebrows rose, a challenging look crossed his eye. "My bad. I believe I informed you not to be late yesterday night?" He asked, his fingers pausing on the laptop.
What those fingers could do to me, Ha!
"My bad sir, I woke up late." My gaze was also challenging. "I woke up to see that I was late, I rushed in to work as soon as I could." I continued. I spoke too soon, only Williams could take my smile away.
"That's cute but I didn't ask you for an explanation. Be warned that Miss Jade, this should be your first and the last time." He got up from his desk.
His suit jacket was hung on the far end and he was on white T shirt that fitted him. His arms bulged a little as he raised it to scratch his temple. His other hand remained buried in the pockets of his black pants.
"Let's get to it, your office is directly next to mine. Your personal assistant David would brief you in want to do. I hope you know you are the acting President till you are introduced officially this weekend as the president. Dad made sure I make you that and I also respected his decisions. So, don't let him down. It's none of my business if you merhzz up actually." William was on full total work mode.
"Note, there's a connected door that links your office to mine. Don't be surprised when I don't enter your office through the front door. Next time, manage not to come late. It wouldn't speak well to other co workers. Also, I have the ability to suspend you if there is any sort of mis-conduct from you whatsoever. Now that, that's cleared. Get to work. Ciao." With that, he ended his speech and walked towards the window, backing me and staring down at the busy Lagos roads downwards.
"Boda Ode." I mumbled, walking away from him, my purse dangling in his hands.
"What did you just say?" His voice was low and threatening as he called at me.
I stopped on my tracks not turning to him, "I said boda Ode." I said out loud, opening the doors with my hands which had been placed on the door knob and ran outside.
"You will repeat that," I herd him yell just as I closed the door on him.
Someone at work right now say what?
